Catalonia Bavaro, Not worth it at 1/2 the price

OK Be Honest! So we booked the Catalonia Punta Cana and paid for the "Priviliged" Honeymoon suite. So I will cut and paste from the site and respond accordingly. 1)"SITE QUOTE"This suite includes the perks of a "privleged guest" plus a bathtub in the room, a canopy bed, special flowers and a chilled bottle of sparkling wine upon arrive. None of this occurred and I mean NONE of it! No bathtub,No Canopy bed!, No special flowers(no ANY Flowers) and a DAY later someone arrived at our door and handed us a warm bottle of Champagne and No glasses. And it was NOT a Suite!! 2)continental breakfast in the room (one per stay), We made arrangements for this to happen at 9AM Sunday(we arrived Fri 16th of May) Come Sunday 9AM no breakfast 9:30 NADA 10:00 ZIP, no call as to why? Arranged for it to happen Monday and it did and not terribly late but no apology for Sunday's missing Breakfast 3)romantic dinner (one per stay), couples massages, late check out and other Honeymooner benefits (4 night stay is required for some of the extras) BUT these are offered with conditions, Romantic Dinner on the beach supposed to be free but coupon has discount % listed, Couples massage coupon for 25 Min massage WITH conditions. $30 in coupons for casino BUT can only use $5 per day WITH matching cash amount. We stayed 14th to the 22nd and never were offered any Extra's?? Private Lounge with business center, NOPE! not a lounge but an office with a single computer for "Privileged" guests No business center and if you want to print your boarding pass you can't send it to the printer sitting RIGHT next to it Oh No you have to send it to and office employee by email as an attached document then they send it to the printer from the office computer!!! 1 mini fridge and a small liquor stock as well as a very small snack area. Amenities [Details] Air Conditioning YES COLD Balcony/Patio YES But HARD plastic Furniture(Non Privileged rooms had cushioned chairs and or Rockers) Mini Bar NOT a MINI Bar NO Liquor just a Mini Fridge that never gets cold no matter what! Cable/Satellite TV YES but you better Understand Spanish 3 Ifffy English channels Ceiling Fan YES and very quiet Coffee Maker Yes Iron/Ironing Board Yes Telephone Yes Safe Deposit Box Yes Bathtub/Shower Combo NO Just a 2 person shower with no door Hair Dryer Yes Living Room NOPE small inset with 2 chairs and a small table Wireless Internet It's a joke!! Spotty and it's best Our Impression about the staff is if you don't speak Spanish what are you doing here??? We observed on the sly that if money was involved the people that "No Habla Ingles" Suddenly spoke English Extremely we !!!! Very Rude (not all staff just the Majority). Shops only accept credit or debit NO CASH ( or charge it to your room, rough if you are watching your money) If you are "Privileged" your not getting much for it trust me just a cool purple hospital band and to eat in a separate private area (Meh) The Ala Carte restaurants Can only be visited Once each , drinks ordered come with a dribble of liquor Getting help from calling the desk or concierge can take 20 min to 20 hours I KID YOU NOT! Beach area has a retaining type wall just out from the beach that does not allow the free flow of water along the beach and turns the sand past the water into construction grade sand, the beach is fine white sand although the water looked yellow brownish and could be considered brackish at best which explained why not a soul was to be seen anywhere in it the days we went The whole place had a mild pervasive odor of sewage and burning waste. It smelled like Haiti on a good day and I don't mean the touristy side! the water was brownish dark yellow. Unlike most bars and snack/eating areas experienced in other resorts Catalonia severely limits it's evening offerings in these areas. We were told that the resort was celebrating 20 years and quite frankly it was showing every day of it!!! Site pictures must be at least 7 years or more old. It had a run down seedy feeling like the upkeep was not a consideration. No Nearby Ice machines (non at all really) Now the housekeepers were above reproach, room always clean amenities restocked (does not include the "Mini Bar") Our room and the building themselves were in great shape,(the grounds and other buildings are in need of great care. A big plus for some may be the handicap access to the beach and this includes a ramp 1/2 way to the beach and a Beach wheelchair!!! lite weight with balloon sand tires to use right into the water, That is very thoughtful. There are a minor percentage of employees that are all you would hope to find in a hotel but they are about 1 in 5. We saw no High pressure sales people that couldn't be handled with FIRM No Thank You!!! the food was very good and a pleasant selection was had. There was Soooo much wrong with this place but I am Happy I will NEVER have to visit it again even if it was offered to me FREE by the OWNER!

Loved this place!

I went with two other girlfriends. This was the first time at this hotel. THE HOTEL: This hotel is beautiful. Very airy and scenic. Aside from the beautiful pools, you have little ponds with ducks, flamingos, & turtles (which you can feed) all along the hotel. Beautiful trees, palms & flowers everywhere. There's are sections with hammocks, swings, an adorable area to read, even a section for couples who want to put their names on a padlock to have put there! The service is amazing. Oh, and did I forget to mention FREE Wi-Fi?! SERVICE: Every staff member was super friendly. We were greeted everywhere we went. Any request was tended to promptly. Great service overall. THE ROOM: We stayed in the "Privileged" section which was great. Just steps away from both Bavaro Beach and the pool. Rooms were immaculate and spacious enough for 3 women to be comfortable. We had a hammock on the balcony, which I used every morning to enjoy the morning view. ACTIVITIES: Though we did not participate in all of the activities offered poolside, we loved how many different activities they offered on a daily basis. Even archery and painting contests! We didn't attend many of the evening shows, but the Beach Party at night was a lot of fun. THE FOOD: I have to say this place had a ton of varieties of food as far as the buffet. Honesty, I think certain foods weren't as flavorful as you would expect it to be because they may cater to what people are staying away from health-conscious wise, or allergy-wise. We loved the Carribean Restaurant there but was very disappointed with the Steak Restaurant (not as far as service, but as far as the food overall). Oh, and since you can never go wrong with pizza, by the pool you can have wood-fired pizza by the slice or made for you by the pie to eat there or take with you! We enjoyed that. THE EXCURSIONS: We ladies got to do three of them. The excursion to Saona Island was amazing. The drive there is a bit long, but my goodness, it was worth it for the scenery and the experience. We were lucky enough to encounter a staff member who told us about the Ocean Spa Excursion. It was quite different than any Excursion package I've seen. From the Dr. Fish pedicure (yes, it's little fish nibbling on your dead skin!), to the amazing boat ride with a tranquil yoga class, an amazing body scrub, massage, healthy snacks, some time in the beautiful waters of Turquesa beach on a float to soak in some sun, THEN a great lunch when you get off the boat. It was quite the experience. The best $150 spent in a long time. Our biggest disappointment was perhaps the one people raved about the most, which was "Coco Bongo"! We couldn't wait to go! It was about 15 minutes or less from our hotel, and it looked really cool. Outside & in... We just didn't realize that it is just ONE room, so if you weren't lucky enough to get a seat, (or booked VIP- thankfully we didn't do that either because it would've still been a waste) you are standing, not being able to dance the whole night (it's not a club dance floor). You're standing the whole time to see some type of Vegas-style show with a video montage going on. Forget about getting drinks- it takes forever. We left waaaaaayyy before the scheduled bus pickup and took a cab back to the hotel. Overall, we had a fantastic time, enjoyed the hotel very much and its amenities and made memories for a lifetime there. I would definitely go back there - and recommend to others.

Beautiful resort. That’s about it

The grounds are gorgeous, so they have that going for them. The service is AWFUL everywhere except at the Yuca restaurant, and if you don’t speak Spanish, I would suggest looking elsewhere. A lot of the personnel don’t understand English, so it’s tough to communicate with anyone. There were a lot of peddlers, even very persistent hotel workers trying to get you to buy into this or that, and not just a one time meeting for a time share. Constantly haggling. For the amount we paid, I don’t think it was worth it.

Best family vacation ever!!

Rooms were comfortable, issue with the AC in room, staff fixed it in very timely manner! Food was very good! Check in went quite slowly however it turned out they were just finding us 2 rooms next to each other! (This can be a problem when there is a language barrier). All in all we had a wonderful vacation! Don’t forget the sunscreen!!

Best family vacation ever!!
