Not what we paid for.....

The beach was absolutely fantastic here and the staff was friendly as a whole, though somewhat incompetent. The shops were cute and we enjoyed the coffee shop as well. The beach bar served a lot of great cocktails, and Gabriel was a great bartender. That said, there were several things that didn't meet expectations. For starters, the place was under construction. We were assured that our stay there would NOT be compromised as a result of the construction, but that was far from true. More than half of the pool was shutdown, and while sitting at the part that was open, instead of a relaxing poolside/beachside experience, we had the pleasure of listening to a jackhammer a good part of our stay. In addition, the "restaurants" were all moved around (some into the main buffet hall) and the food at each of the restaurants wasn't nearly as good as the buffet (which was quite good). Not only was a lot of the food at the restaurants not that good, but on multiple occasions our sides were cold. In addition, none of the restaurants had air conditioning and the mosquitoes were rampant. If you didn't go to dinner bathed in bug sprayed, you were sure to get eaten alive. When you get to the end of the day and sit down for dinner, you want to be able to relax and enjoy each other's company. Instead, we often found ourselves rushing to eat and get back to our room as soon as possible so we could have some cool air and be away from the swarm of mosquitoes; not the most enjoyable way to eat a meal. At some of eating locations for lunch time they required you to wear a shirt even though they were open air and right off of the pool and beach. We followed those rules, but it was obvious that others did not. Apparently it depended on who you were as to whether or not you were allowed to dine with no shirt or cover up. In addition to the double standard, we also orders a couple of frozen drinks at one of the eating areas one afternoon along with some crepes. After we had received our food and still didn't have our drinks (15 minutes), we informed the server and she indicated she would have them right out. After we had eaten our food and still didn't have our drinks (35 minutes after they had been ordered), I went to the server and informed her we still didn't have our drinks. She again indicated they would be right out. Ten minutes later, as we were leaving the crepery, our drinks were handed to us on our way out. So, ~45 minutes for a frozen drink at a non-busy time.....not ideal. The rooms were cute and we loved the decor, BUT there were hundreds of tiny bugs in our room in the closet and sink areas (kind of like ants but smaller). We also found out that if you were wanting to get to bed at a decent hour, that wasn't going to happen as the music/bass from the theatre at night was blasting and could be heard/felt in our room. After a couple days of the sub-par experience, we alerted the staff of the bug situation, noise (jackhammers/music) as well as the not so great experiences at the restaurants with the food and service. The front desk was more than understanding (almost seemed they weren't surprised) and offered to try and make it up to us. They said they would have the cleaning staff do a deep clean immediately (which did nothing to rid the bugs) and also asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. We indicated that it was my girlfriend's birthday in about a week. The way we were "compensated" for our inconvenience was a free dinner at their second level tapas restaurant ($30 value since that restaurant wasn't included with the all inclusive package) which overlooked the ocean and two matching honeymooners t-shirts (yes, honeymooners t-shirts) left on our bed, both of which were women's shirts. The one for me was a women's 2X and I usually wear a men's M/L. Needless to say, it looks like someone painted it on me, and oh by the way, it wasn't our honeymoon and we aren't engaged. It was a nice gesture I suppose??? But it certainly missed the mark. As for the tapas restaurant, the view was absolutely gorgeous. As for the food, well, the view was absolutely gorgeous. Again, the buffet would have been much better. Again, the staff as a whole was quite friendly and the beach was absolutely amazing! We would absolutely consider revisiting the beach in this area. I just wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone else looking to have an enjoyable, relaxing getaway. To be clear, I am generally the kind of guy that rolls with the punches and let the little things go. However, when we pay good money to get away and relax, this is not the experience you're paying for. I am guessing that others could have had a different experience than we did, especially if the place wasn't under construction. However, we paid full price and weren't discounted anything for the compromised state of the resort, so we are basing our experience with that in mind. Had we paid 75% of normal price knowing that some aspects would not be up to par, our perspective would be different. However, that wasn't the case. We can only speak to the experience that we had, and it was not great.

Great value for relaxing weekend

This place has an amazing beach - 2/3 of the pool was under construction, so that was a little underwhelming. Staff were overall super friendly and helpful, with a few minor exceptions like long waits (and a few multiple requests) for things to be brought to our room. Very nice food and drink selections. Good ambience on the property and some cheesy but mindlessly fun entertainment. Totally worth the price!

Great value and well worth it!

I can truly say I enjoyed my stay here. Everything was just as it looks on the videos. The service was amazing and I have zero complaints. Food was great as well as the drinks. It was the first resort I have been to where Americans were not in high numbers and I must say I found that refreshing. I am an American and I feel were are way too critical and entitled when we are the VISITORS in another country. I found the staff wonderful even though some could not speak English, they tried their best to help. The beach was fantastic and the pool as well. The rooms were spacious and well maintained. Bring bug spray for the walk from the Lobby. The shows were fun and the wildlife was awesome! Coatis are cool little animals. So if you are thinking about booking, do it. You won't regret it.

Dad and Daughter trip

We had the best time, we have no complaints! We went on excursions every day so we did not use the pool much and they were working on it. This is the third time visiting the Caribbean for us and if this resort is available for the same amount of money , we will be coming back!I Enjoyed walking on the beautiful beach and not being solicited, you can walk for miles. The beautiful garden trails leading to the rooms are just gorgeous . Bonus seeing the wildlife. All of the staff is amazing and even when there was a translation problem they made sure we were taken care of.We never had any lines for the food which was very nice. We have had a bigger selection of restaurants before but the amount provided was enough..The restaurants were also under construction. Another thank you, When my Daughter asked for a non alcohol drink and received it! Other resorts find this hard to do and this one gives you what you want! A very quick check in and out as well. All of our time was spent on vacation and not waiting in a line or trying to get something fixed...My Daughter used room service often too, always fast and polite .

Resort Update
Catalonia Hotels & Resorts are pleased to announce their upcoming renovations at Catalonia Privilege Maroma. The improvements will take place in the pool area and in their a-la-carte restaurants.

The works on the pool will be done in two parts, leaving one half open for clients to use while work is completed on the other section. The three affected a-la-carte restaurants, Mexican, Italian, and Grill will be relocated to other areas of the resort. Guests will still have access to all a-la-carte options.

Once the improvements are finished, guests will then be able to enjoy not only three but four modern a-la-carte restaurants, including a new Asian restaurant which will be part of the all inclusive package for all guests. Work is scheduled to begin late August and will extend thru September. The resort will do their best to minimize the impact on their guests vacation experience and assure that all services will still be provided during this time.

Environmental Levy Fee
The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Rivera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region. In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check out; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you and enjoy your visit.
