Awesome beach, beautiful grounds and very friendly and helpful staff. The privileged area and rooms are the way to go without a doubt. Restaurants were not good at all and several were under construction so once construction is completed hopefully the food will change...... Thankful for the little food trucks by the beach, they were good.

Beach lover

Loved it! Felt the resort was very clean and the people were very nice. We love the sugar sand beach, palm trees to escape from the sun. Never been anywhere that the staff was so attentive to the needs of their quest. Can’t wait to visit again when they have the new restaurants opened. Only complaint was that some of the food at the buffet was cold.

Disappointing

This was our second stay at Catalonia and needless to say was not as good as last time. Starting off when we arrived we had to wait to get into our room- no problem check in is at 3 we completely understand. However, when we finally got into our room we had to call twice just to get our luggage. So we had to sit and wait in our hotel room for our luggage to change and go enjoy the beach. Beach was beautiful as it was last time, which is why we chose this resort in the first time. Also the entertainment staff was AMAZING. The food trucks by the pool were also a great addition. On the second night our safe quit working. We had to call 3 times to get someone to come and help us. We had to stay and wait while they fixed it and got into the safe. It took over an hour. The problem honestly was not the act that we had an issue- we realize that stuff happens. It is the fact that to get an issue resolved at this place was ridiculous. Not only did we have issues with service, the food menus at the restaurants seemed a bit more limited than last time and it was hard to find something since I don't care for sea food however the steak house restaurant was very good in regards to food. The servers were also very good there- however the hostess was extremely rude. When we ate there the first time we had to ask multiple times to be put not he wait list that we did want to wait. We practically had to beg to be put on it which was ridiculous. After waiting for quite awhile we finally sat down- and then we were told they were pretty much out of everything which was very frustrating. On our last night in the hotel we were resting before the show and heard a very loud crash sound which came from the balcony. The drywall had literally crashed down from the ceiling of the third floor balcony and was all over. I am surprised it didn't break the glass door! When we called the front desk to tell them what had just happened she basically brushed me off and pretty much indicated it was probably just the rain I was hearing. Like I making up the fact that all of the drywall just came crashing down. Finally quite a while later a maintenance man came he didn't really speak English so he pretty much just examined it grabbed a few of the big pieces, while trailing it through our room and that was it. Reception called shortly after- all she said was "do you want to switch rooms." I told her no since it was our last night however I advised her it needed to be cleaned up. After feeling like I interrupted her night we hung up. We went to the show at 9:30 came back and the mess STILL had not been cleaned up. We did not receive an apology, and acknowledgement or even a hey are you ok - nothing. They pretty much did nothing except say do you want to switch rooms. And even that came out like it hurt them to say. All in all we had decided based on our last trip that this hotel was not top of the line but it was decent, the beach was beautiful and the service was amazing- this was obviously not the case this time around. Sad to say because we probably would have continued to come back every year.

Not what we paid for.....

The beach was absolutely fantastic here and the staff was friendly as a whole, though somewhat incompetent. The shops were cute and we enjoyed the coffee shop as well. The beach bar served a lot of great cocktails, and Gabriel was a great bartender. That said, there were several things that didn't meet expectations. For starters, the place was under construction. We were assured that our stay there would NOT be compromised as a result of the construction, but that was far from true. More than half of the pool was shutdown, and while sitting at the part that was open, instead of a relaxing poolside/beachside experience, we had the pleasure of listening to a jackhammer a good part of our stay. In addition, the "restaurants" were all moved around (some into the main buffet hall) and the food at each of the restaurants wasn't nearly as good as the buffet (which was quite good). Not only was a lot of the food at the restaurants not that good, but on multiple occasions our sides were cold. In addition, none of the restaurants had air conditioning and the mosquitoes were rampant. If you didn't go to dinner bathed in bug sprayed, you were sure to get eaten alive. When you get to the end of the day and sit down for dinner, you want to be able to relax and enjoy each other's company. Instead, we often found ourselves rushing to eat and get back to our room as soon as possible so we could have some cool air and be away from the swarm of mosquitoes; not the most enjoyable way to eat a meal. At some of eating locations for lunch time they required you to wear a shirt even though they were open air and right off of the pool and beach. We followed those rules, but it was obvious that others did not. Apparently it depended on who you were as to whether or not you were allowed to dine with no shirt or cover up. In addition to the double standard, we also orders a couple of frozen drinks at one of the eating areas one afternoon along with some crepes. After we had received our food and still didn't have our drinks (15 minutes), we informed the server and she indicated she would have them right out. After we had eaten our food and still didn't have our drinks (35 minutes after they had been ordered), I went to the server and informed her we still didn't have our drinks. She again indicated they would be right out. Ten minutes later, as we were leaving the crepery, our drinks were handed to us on our way out. So, ~45 minutes for a frozen drink at a non-busy time.....not ideal. The rooms were cute and we loved the decor, BUT there were hundreds of tiny bugs in our room in the closet and sink areas (kind of like ants but smaller). We also found out that if you were wanting to get to bed at a decent hour, that wasn't going to happen as the music/bass from the theatre at night was blasting and could be heard/felt in our room. After a couple days of the sub-par experience, we alerted the staff of the bug situation, noise (jackhammers/music) as well as the not so great experiences at the restaurants with the food and service. The front desk was more than understanding (almost seemed they weren't surprised) and offered to try and make it up to us. They said they would have the cleaning staff do a deep clean immediately (which did nothing to rid the bugs) and also asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. We indicated that it was my girlfriend's birthday in about a week. The way we were "compensated" for our inconvenience was a free dinner at their second level tapas restaurant ($30 value since that restaurant wasn't included with the all inclusive package) which overlooked the ocean and two matching honeymooners t-shirts (yes, honeymooners t-shirts) left on our bed, both of which were women's shirts. The one for me was a women's 2X and I usually wear a men's M/L. Needless to say, it looks like someone painted it on me, and oh by the way, it wasn't our honeymoon and we aren't engaged. It was a nice gesture I suppose??? But it certainly missed the mark. As for the tapas restaurant, the view was absolutely gorgeous. As for the food, well, the view was absolutely gorgeous. Again, the buffet would have been much better. Again, the staff as a whole was quite friendly and the beach was absolutely amazing! We would absolutely consider revisiting the beach in this area. I just wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone else looking to have an enjoyable, relaxing getaway. To be clear, I am generally the kind of guy that rolls with the punches and let the little things go. However, when we pay good money to get away and relax, this is not the experience you're paying for. I am guessing that others could have had a different experience than we did, especially if the place wasn't under construction. However, we paid full price and weren't discounted anything for the compromised state of the resort, so we are basing our experience with that in mind. Had we paid 75% of normal price knowing that some aspects would not be up to par, our perspective would be different. However, that wasn't the case. We can only speak to the experience that we had, and it was not great.
