There are lots of great places to travel without a passport, including coastal states and U.S. territories in the Caribbean. Hawaii
If you're planning a vacay with your boo or the entire crew, Hawaii is a serious contender for the destination of choice. It’s universally known for blue waves and sandy shores, but beachy bliss isn't the only thing you have to look forward to.
The diverse attractions and activities appeal to a range of interests. Fun fact for the history buffs: Hawaii is the only state in the Union that was once its own kingdom2 Learn even more about the rich history and culture of the islands at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu on Oahu. U.S. Virgin Islands
The three U.S. Virgin Islands are a great pick for a warm getaway—but which one should you visit first?
- St. John is for active travelers, as 60% of the island is part of the Virgin Islands National Park. With 25 hiking trails to explore6, you'll return home with a sculpted beach bod. Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is an easy flight from the Mainland and has so many things to see and do that you and your peeps should start planning a return trip before the vacay ends. Try a zipline tour in El Yunque National Forest, a cave tour in the Parque de las Cavernas or visit the Arecibo Observatory to see the largest radio telescope in the world.
For a slower pace, take a romantic stroll with your sweetie through the streets of Old San Juan while listening to the call of the coqui frogs in the distance. What to Bring
While you won't need your passport for any of these trips, you'll want to bring a few other essentials.
- Your REAL ID: As of May 2025, all U.S. travelers 18 and older need a REAL ID to board domestic flights if they want to use their state-issued driver's license as their main form of identification. Check your license—A REAL ID-compliant card will have a star in the upper right portion8. If you don't have a REAL ID when you get to the airport, you can pay a $45 fee to use TSA ConfirmID.
- Sunscreen: As the song says, everybody's free to wear sunscreen, and they absolutely should! But not all sunscreens are created equal, and some can harm delicate underwater ecosystems. Look for products labeled "reef safe" or "mineral free."
- A range of clothing: You may be planning to spend most of your time reading on a beach, but the weather may have other plans. Have some longer pants and long-sleeve shirts at the ready, just in case the temperature drops, and bring some nicer clothes and shoes, just in case a reservation opens up at that fancy restaurant you've been eyeing.
