Great Value! Great Fun! Pura Vida!

We had a wonderful time at this resort! I highly recommend it. Read the other reviews and form your own opinion but we would go back in a heartbeat. Pros: Premium Level Upgrade is well worth it! Access to the Premium Level Lounge gets you beautiful views and access to top shelf liquor and the best AC in the resort. In addition, your mini fridge gets refreshed daily, turn down service and daily housekeeping. Beautiful grounds, beautiful views, and Howler Monkeys and other wildlife throughout the property. Be prepared to walk some stairs as you can see in the pictures. However, the shuttle service is excellent and is recommended for properties that are far away from the lobby and dining. 2 Pools. The main pool is where all activities are located. They do a great job of running various activities throughout the day. Water Aerobics, Kayaking, Bingo, Rifle, Archery, Spanish Lessons, Dance Lessons, Disco, Kareoke, and much more. Swim up bar pool down by the beach. Nice for drinking and meeting people from all around the world. Food. This may be a point of contention for some folks. We thought the buffet was excellent and provided different variety every day. If you are picky about buffets then this may not be the place for you. The Italian and the Oriental restaurants are also open for reservations. They are very good and the service is excellent. Make your reservations early. The steak grill is open 2 days on the weekend. We enjoyed it but I do not recommend the steaks. They were not very good cuts of meat. Everything else was fine and service was good. The people. Costa Ricans are beautiful friendly people. All of our resort workers were so accomodating. Treat them well. Cons: Beach. The beach is beautiful and situated on a bay. The views are spectacular. Don't expect beautiful curl waves and palm trees. This is the Pacific and surrounded by volcanic rock. Once high tide comes in the beach is inaccessible as the water comes all the way up to the hills. Also, the beach is public so is open to anyone, including vendors who will be on you to buy things. Just be prepared. Rainy Season. May to Oct is rainy season. Be prepared to plan you day around it. It only rained hard 1 day out of 10 for us but we did get light rain almost every afternoon. It did not ruin a thing for us but please do not stay in the pool when there is thunder. Not a good idea. Mosquito repellent. Bring it with you. If you do any of the games outside the pool you will need it. We also did a wonderful excursion to the rain forest and you will need it there. Luxury. Do not expect the Ritz Carlton at this resort. Some things could use some updating but realizing that you are not paying Ritz Carlton prices. If you are the type who expects top luxury in everything this may not be the place for you. However, it is still very nice and provides excellent service. Enjoy yourself and ask for a top floor room for the best views. Pura Vida

First Time in Costa and at Occidental

Great first visit. Pleasantly surprised by facility and location. Guanacaste is only about 30-45 minutes from Liberia airport. Also the driest part of Costa Rica so the rainy season of May-Sept not as big of a deal. Good location to go for tours as well. Several good restaurants off property as well. Occidental is a nice facility and the PEOPLE were GREAT. So nice. We will be back. Great value. Pura Vida!!!

    Great stay, amazing staff!

Our stay was a great one! Stayed a week in June 2025. The staff really made it quite special. Three in particular were the bartenders we met, Bryan and Joaquin in the lobby bar were extremely friendly, kind, and welcoming on our first night and continued the exceptional service during our entire stay. Bryan went above and beyond to make first timers feel welcome to Costa Rica. The third was Yuediel at the pool bar. He was such a blast!!! He would greet people as they came in the area and would give the cheered goodbyes when his shift ended. He connected many guests at the bar in English and Spanish! He was the best atmosphere at the bar. He too, went above and beyond. One day they couldn’t offer a spicy guaro shot (highly recommend) the next day he made sure they were stocked! The property itself is beautiful with spectacular beach access. The food was themed each night, the Italian restaurant was wonderful. The other group of people that also deserve some attention are the entertainment staff. Unfortunately I didn’t get their names but it was two young men and young lady in particular during our stay she had some braids. They came to our table during dinner and invited all the guests to karaoke and man did they bring the lively atmosphere. They encouraged everyone and hyped everyone up when they sang. They were all around great, happy, kind, welcoming individuals really brought the guests together so it made the stay even more impactful since we all sort of bonded. The only recommendation we really have from our stay is to extend the pool hours. They closed the pools a bit too early for our liking. Along with the pool hours that should mirror the towel exchange hours as well. We would find ourselves having to keep our wet towels every night and exchanging them in the morning. Not terribly inconvenient but not ideal either. Highly recommend this resort. It’s my second time and I’ll be returning again!!

    Stressful Vacation

The surrounding area is beautiful. Our room flooded twice. We switched rooms 3 times and each time was worse than the other room. Our first day there and went to the snack bar and the food was covered in flies. I would not stay here again.
