Awesome Vacation

We booked a last minute vacation and went for a long weekend from Thurs 8/18 - Sun 8/21 and had a fabulous vacation at this all-inclusive resort!! We took a cab to/from the airport - $11 each + $2/bag - very easy & convenient! Caribbean Night on Thursday by the pool area is a MUST! Great entertainment and wonderful food! On Friday we relaxed on the beach (it was off season so there were very few people there, which we LOVED!), had lunch at the grill by the pool and ate at the Asian Restaurant that evening, which was wonderful! We went to the Karaoke that night and had so much fun listening to the great entertainment! On Saturday we relaxed on the beach, had so much fun parasailing ($85/person) and LOVED kayaking in the beautiful water (free). We also enjoyed the swim up bar at the pool and found ALL the staff to be friendly and helpful!! We also had an ocean view room which had a gorgeous view. Rooms were very nice and clean. On Friday, we made reservations for Saturday evening at the Hibachi Grill and had so much fun there! The food was awesome, the portions were huge, and the cook was a great entertainer! You usually only have 2 restaurants to choose from for dinner and a grill and a buffet to choose from for lunch but we were fine with that as we were only there a few days. Pool was always clean & the beach was rocky but if you enter the water at the far end by the kayak storage area, it is all sandy there. Lots of steps going down to the pool/beach area but there is a shuttle if you don't like the steps. We didn't mind them because it helped work off all the good food and drinks we had! Drinks were great and they used top shelf alcohol to make them (Absolute/Captain Morgan, etc). There is not a lot of night life at the resort but we didn't mind that and were back in our rooms by 10:30 or 11:00 each night. This is not a new 5 star resort but it was probably one of the very best vacations we have been on and we have traveled to several all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica, & the Bahamas. We would definitely go back! We loved Sugar Bay Resort & Spa!

Great first experience

My boyfriend and I spent a long time researching different resorts in the virgin islands, as this was our first time to St. Thomas and our first time doing an all-inclusive vacation. Sugar Bay had some mixed reviews, and many people told us the place was "going downhill after losing their Wyndham status", but we went in with an open mind because it seemed to be the most affordable of the nicer options. We had a great experience at Sugar Bay. Our room was much nicer than expected, it looked exactly like the photos on the website. Gorgeous view of the ocean and beach despite being labeled "partial ocean view". Everything was clean and well-maintained. Our only complaint about the room would be that there was not a great seal on the bottom of the door, and we had a couple of unwelcome pests wander in (a roach and a centipede). We solved this problem by shoving a towel into the space at the bottom at night. Speaking of towels, it was sometimes a struggle to have towels replaced daily by housekeeping staff, which is probably my only other real complaint. They were "out of towels" a couple of times, and we had to re-use ours. Other than that, everything was wonderful. The staff was kind and helpful. We read some negative reviews prior to our trip from guests complaining they had to "get things by themselves". This seemed odd to me, because I was more than happy to walk myself to the bar and grab a frozen margarita to take to the beach. I suppose some people are used to a certain level of luxury on these trips, but as I said, this was my first time and I did not expect people to fan me with palm leaves and feed me grapes. The bartenders were all amazing, made delicious drinks and were very personable. the restaurants were pretty average, not bad at all. Our favorite dinner was the red snapper with risotto at the Baci Italian restaurant. The buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner were essentially the same things every day, pretty standard and tasty but not out-of-this-world. What I learned is that with an all-inclusive package that allows people to order endless amounts of food and drink, you should not expect gourmet meals all day every day. It was definitely worth it to venture off of the resort to find a good sea food dinner once or twice! As for the pool area and beach, I was in love!!! There are three pools, all clean and well-maintained. One pool has a swim-up bar that has fun games throughout the day like bingo and flip-cup. There are two lunch restaurants by the pool where you can grab a sandwich or a plate of fries and take them wherever you want to plant yourself by the water. There are multiple bathrooms by the pools that were always clean and convenient. The beach at Sugar Bay is man-made and kind of small, but it was absolutely beautiful. Crystal clear water and soft sand, with many beach chairs and umbrellas. Beach chairs have thick blue cushions on them, very comfortable, but can be removed if you don't like them. There is a little kiosk on the beach where you can sign up for snorkeling excursions and tours of the islands (these cost extra), or you can take out paddle boards and kayaks for free. I would recommend taking a taxi and spending a day at Magen's Bay Beach. We only had time to spend a couple of hours there, but I wish we could have spent multiple days there. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen, and would be the perfect place to go snorkeling or paddle boarding. I was swimming in the water, and a sea turtle popped up right next to me! Research it a little before you go, but Magen's Bay is a MUST!!! We would also recommend taking the ferry over to St. John to do some hiking. The national park is gigantic and beautiful. The staff at Sugar Bay are always out at the main building to coordinate a taxi for you. The taxis were probably the most expensive part of our trip. Most rides are at least 10 dollars per person plus a tip for one-way, maybe more depending on how far you are going from the resort. One last tip would be to bring a ton of sun block and bug spray! I am very fair skinned and burn very easily, and being so much closer to the equator carries high risk for sunburn/sun poisoning. I re-applied every time I got out of the water and still got a little burn! We brought OFF bug spray to deter mosquitos as this is a high-risk area for the Zika virus. I sprayed myself before going outside, and still came home with about 20 mosquito bites. It might be worth it to look into an extra-strength bug spray and apply liberally!! I am glad I brought these items with me from home, because they are outrageously expensive on the resort and all over the island! Over all, we had an absolutely wonderful time at Sugar Bay! A few minor complaints, but nothing that would stop us from coming back again. This was a vacation to remember!

What's to Love

St. Thomas is a dreamy destination - white sandy beaches, gorgeous ocean waters, sun days.

Begin your day in Zen at one of the yoga classes. Namaste.

Your modern room comes with a view - mountain, tropical or ocean - all swoon-worthy.

Got the kiddos? Great - the Kids Klub will take care of the activities. You can hit the Journey's Spa.

Service is top-notch - don't hesitate to ask for a thing. No, we mean really.

Activities for all - tennis, mini golf, beach and pool volleyball - a little friendly competition is good.

What We'd Change

To get to the beach, it's a bit of a hike, but luckily, the resort's shuttle will take you to and from the beach all day long.

Why You Should Go

When you hit paradise, you've got a zippy 40 minutes to the resort. Bubbly is on deck.

Duty-free shopping dates back to 1724 - lots of galleries, boutiques and unique shops.

Spend a day at Lindquist beach - not overcrowded, crystal clear water, but bring towels & snacks.

Mahogany Run Golf Course is an 18-hole stunner that runs along the sweet Caribbean.

The resort has a shuttle that will take you to and from the beach. Hop on.

Pack some water shoes for the beach - always better to be covered than step on a rock.
