Ocean Coral... disappointingly inconsistent

My girlfriend and I visited Ocean Coral & Turquesa earlier this month for a weeklong romantic vacation. We chose this hotel initially because of the plethora of awards and positive reviews we found on trip advisor and other sites. We knew this was a higher mid-range resort but it offered some things like better quality alcoholic beverages and several restaurants as well as oceanview rooms and daily activities. What we discovered upon checking in, was that the ocean view upgraded we paid for in advance and the king beds that we requested were not provided. Instead, we received a room that looked out on the service entrance of one of their restaurants which had two double beds. The front desk was able to get us the oceanview room we paid for by the king beds were not available… Mind you we requested king beds 3 months out. This was a sign of how the rest of the resort experience was going to go. We discovered that housekeeping was lackluster at best in that there were days when they took our dirty towels and left us no clean ones as well as one day where they didn’t even come and all. There were also days where they didn’t refill the minibar and so that was a hassle with even getting water and soda delivered. On the day they took the towels and didn’t leave any, it took over an hour for the front desk to get housekeeping to deliver towels to the room. We eventually discovered that leaving a note in Spanish, a language that neither of us really can’t speak so thank God for Google translator, we were able to get them to leave the number of towels they took. Room service was a little a bit better although the quality of the food was subpar but the time to deliver it was much better than the towels. As far as the rest of the resort goes, they offer four different pools of which only one has a swim up bar. The swim up bar closes at 5 PM even though the pools don’t close until 8 PM. The wait service on both the beach and the pools is pathetic. If you place an order you’ll be lucky to get your drinks within 20 min. and that’s if they actually remember to bring them back to you. There was one instance where my drinks went to someone else and he never came back for the rest of the day. The one nice thing is the pool with the bar is rather loud but the pool in the privileged section is open to everyone and that was our pool of choice as it was deeper, less crowded and quieter. The nightlife entertainment was typical in that they had some dancing/music, karaoke, a few stage shows and inside the lobby some extremely loud, mediocre ”professional” singer. Wifi was included for us for free. The bar staff and the restaurants is where it got extremely inconsistent in that some bartenders were great in terms of making the drinks fast and strong while other bartenders were way too heavy on the mixers (ie too sweet or too weak) and way too eager to push the cheaper liquor over at the better quality liquor. We learned early on that you need to order your drinks based on the brand of liquor, remember we chose this resort in large part because of the better quality liquor that was available without an upgrade, and when you did not do this, you got bottom shelf. Likewise the restaurants had hit or miss food. The buffet was okay but for what they offered, breakfast was the best meal there. The Caribbean Grill was terrible as it was our first experience at the resort and the buffet they put out for lunch was pathetic… dinner was mediocre (nothing special). The blue Moon had pretty good atmosphere and reminded me of the 1960s higher-end restaurant with a menu to match. The food with the expectation of the one rubber-like giant oyster I got was very good. We noticed that several of the restaurants could’ve plate (in terms of sides) what was listed on the menu…. And the sides they offered were very small portions. The Japanese restaurant with the hibachi option was our number two favorite but this resort does not let you make reservations in advance and so every day you have to stand there for an hour at five o’clock to try to get a reservation and if you’re lucky you might be able to get one of the limited seats. The hibachi show was traditional but it was evident our chef was still learning and honing his presentation skills with the utensils. He also wasn’t able to evenly divide the food amongst everyone at the table. The french creaperie was the best for lunch and we had an amazing pool side moonlit romantic dinner for our last meal of the vacation. It’s one of the meals where you need the reservation in advance and you much select your meal ahead of time - we were both very pleased with the quality and the level of service. This experience was what we felt the entire experience should have been like given the fact of the price for the low season. Our waiter went above and beyond going so far as to make us a special Champagne drink, a flaming Mexican coffee for dessert and took some very nice pictures of us! It was extremely evident that he’s very guest oriented and went out of his way several times. The rest of the restaurant staff made the meal a truly wonderful experience. My only regret was that the rest of the stay was not like this. A few other items in closing: the bars use fairly small cups and so you want to bring your own. They sell Bubba kegs at the high price and good luck getting change at the hotel cashier for tips. I couldn’t even get pesos for a $20 the one day and when they had pesos, the rate was horrible. Also this is an all-inclusive resort but there are up charges everywhere for meals and wine. The waiters lightly pushy the wine but once you tell them you’re not interested, they respected your choice. They do offer house wines which tasted like vinegar but we were fine with cocktails for dinner. I only needed to explain how to make a sweet martini three times but it is what it is…Maybe the resort works better in high season as we kept hearing excuses over and over again that they were training new people but I was rather disappointed when one of the bellhops told us the resort was 85% full and we were getting mediocre service. We won’t be going back to any of the H10 resorts due to the number of issues or this close to Cancun as EVERYTHING we did required an hour’s drive south of the resort. There is nothing walkable from the resort and there’s nothing really around so if you like to get out to go shopping or eat off-resort, you will need a taxi. We will be going back to Mexico but we will be going to playa Del Carmen or Puerto Adventuras next time. Full disclosure: my girlfriend is a professional chef and I actually expect quality food and service when I’m spending hard-earned money. We had higher expectations but neither of us feel they were unrealistic given the price and reviews. For those people who don’t care about food quality, accurate menus or reliable service, this resort might work for you. Oh and we definitely would not recommend spending the extra $400 a person for the privilege upgrade.

Loved it

Absolutely loved this resort. Had a pool for whatever your interests are. There were busy party pools and a calm, relaxing pool for those just interested in reading and relaxing. Food was very good. Impressed by the buffet and restaurants. Room was very comfortable. The grounds and views were absolutely gorgeous and well maintained. Couldn't have been more happy with our stay.

Beautiful place

The resort was beautiful and the grounds were clean and wonderfully maintained. All the people there were very friendly and helpful. The only complaint we had was that the resort was very big and spread out and only one elevator there was in working order. We meet and employee who had been working there for 6 months and there had always only been one working elevator. It made things kind of hard with having to have a stroller to carry up and down staircases all day. Also the free room service option was awesome but there were a good number of dirty dishes we would see left in the hallways. Overall we would definitely visit here again.
