Deal of Fortune Bait and Switch

While we had a good trip, this resort clearly is not a 4.5 star resort and should not have been part of the Deal of Fortune package - clear bait and switch marketing and we are not pleased with this. We are frequent travelers and understand what a 4.5 star resort is - this felt more like a 2-3 star resort. We had modest expectations (not travel snobs at all as we typically stay in value oriented lodging) but this resort did not meet them. We are unlikely to ever book another Cheap Caribbean trip or to stay at a Dreams resort. Let's start with the good however: Good: Food actually exceeded our expectations if you knew what to order. Made to order omelets, crepes, and smoothies for breakfast were excellent. Pizza in outdoor brick oven was a nice bonus. Fresh fish of the day (grouper) was really tasty and prepared well. Rooms were good sized and comfortable. Day trip to Secrets Akumal was fabulous (now this is an awesome resort) and was worth having to put up with a high pressure 3 hour sales presentation (even though they promised it would only be 90 minutes and low pressure). Night entertainment was good, especially the fire show on the beach. Bad: Beach is very small and only had a tiny section of nice sand - cannot really walk the beach for very far. Way too much pushy selling, especially at airport arrival and check in. Hotel feels a bit dated and a little dirty - showers had mold in places and the towels were frayed and ripped in places. The beach chairs were the most uncomfortable chairs we have ever been in. Pools were crowded given there were only 2 (could not swim if wanted to). Hot tubs were lukewarm. Lots of kids but they were mostly well behaved (other than one night at dinner). Bigger issue were the adults - not as well behaved. One hour shuttle from airport (after 45 minutes of lines and sales pitches by Amstar Resorts) for another $100 round trip. Service was generally good but many of the workers did not smile and did not seem happy - could have been the crowd but it didn't help the experience.

A so-so experience

As stated in the title, I had a so-so experience. My BF and I went with another couple. We are a group of 20-something year olds. PREFERRED CLUB: We paid for the preferred club option and the perks weren't apparent. I would not recommend this upgrade. The preferred club gave us access to a lounge bar on our floor. This bar had better liquor options staffed with a bartender, espresso machine, and some food. This lounge was mostly empty for the most part. I enjoyed the lounge, but the price isn't worth it MEDICAL: My major problem were the linens. I woke up with hives the first 3 days during my stay before realizing it was the linens. At one point my whole body was covered in hives and I had swelling on my face. At my request the front desk support was called a cab driver to get me Benadryl. There is no medical support in the middle of the night. There is a doctor that they can call in the middle of the night and can be there within 30 minutes (I'd be dead by then if the reaction was serious). There is no epinephrine anywhere on the resort. I spoke to the resort doctor the next day and asked if he could write me a script so I can buy an Epi-pen. He said if I were to have a serious allergic reaction the resort would have to call an ambulance for me. Not reassuring at all. I was taking Benadryl around the clock and burned through the bottle by day 3. I paid a reasonable upcharge the first time, but this time they asked by for 3x the amount I paid the first time. I was highly upset and complained to management. I said I wanted to be reimbursed for the money I paid out of pocket for meds (roughly $55 USD). Management was stern and said they would not reimburse me for this. Management attempted to make amends by having house keeping wash my linens in water only, which helped but did not stop the hives. They also gave us 1 day rental of a cabana bed ($35 USD value) and fish spa therapy for me and my friend (~$120 USD value). I still have a bad taste in my mouth about this, because really I just wanted the money for the meds. The cabana beds were often empty and fish spa therapy doesn't cost them anything. CUSTOMER SERVICE: All the staff are friendly, helpful, and hard working. 5/5 FOOD: El Patio was by far our favorite restaurant. Really good fresh Mexican food and they have a flaming coffee for dessert that is delicious. Portfino is an Italian restaurant, which was good as well. Seaside grill and Barefoot grill are good options for lunch. World Cafe, Oceana, and room service food are all just ok. We thought Gohan Sushi was terrible. Do no eat here. ACTIVITIES: They have a daily schedule that varies daily. During our stay our group participated in beach volley ball, yoga, and tequila tasting. They also offered some cooking class, Zumba, water aerobics. There is a billiard room, ping pong, shuffle board, and pickle ball as well. POPULATION: It is definitely a family friendly environment. Lots of young children. During our stay we did not see many people our age. There is an "adults only" side, but to get to the beach and restaurants you have to go through the family side. BEACH: Just ok. Only a small stretch of shoreline on this resort. TL; DR: Good service. A lot of families here. Don't pay more for preferred club service. Alert the resort in advance if you have sensitive skin.

Very disappointed

Very disappointed with the trip. Booked the vacation over 2 months ago and paid extra for a Deluxe Ocean View room. After traveling all day and arriving at the resort tired and ready to settle in we were told "There is a problem with your room. We are transferring you to another resort". I asked about the accommodations there and I was assured that I would get the same package that I had paid for at Dreams. When we arrived at the other resort they put us in a room that did not have an ocean view. All we could see from our balcony was the jungle. When I tried to explain that I had paid extra for an ocean view all I was told was "this resort is more expensive". It may have been more expensive but I didn't ask for it. I simply wanted the ocean view that I paid extra for and planned on for 2 months.

My wife and I were at Dreams for our 2nd anniversary the first week of Feb.. We both liked how much smaller and not so crowded this resort was compared to where we stayed before in Cancun. The service was more than anyone could ever expect...superb to say the least! Jessica, Carlos, Lenin and Marco go out of there way! We both liked that we rarely had to wait for a drink or to be seated in any of the dining rooms. We had dinner all the time, and the seaside grill was fabulous. The Italian place was very good as well, as was the Mexican place. The breakfast and beach buffet were OK? We only have 2 things that could use improvement....The beach is kinda small and shallow. When they have weddings they shut or block some areas. However not a discouragement for going there. We both would and will definitely return. There are some little shops and bars within walking distance by the marina if you want to leave the resort for a bit. We really enjoyed swimming with the dolphins!! I did slip on the stairs and scare the Manatees.....sorry!!!

What's to Love

The sparkling champagne and icy towels that clear out your travel cobwebs.

Swimming with the darling dolphins at the Dolphinarium. (They kiss & handshake, too).

The suites with swoon-worthy views of teal waves, dolphins or manicured gardens.

The comfy beds and even comfier bathrobes and slippers.

Turndown service each night with chocolates. Sweet dreams.

The private white sand beach with the 30-person Jacuzzi. Woot!

Explorer's club (kids 3-12) with everything from sand castle contests to Plant a Tree & Corn Harvest Project.

Red Cross certified staff supervise the aforementioned club. A relief, right?

Parents get a pager from the Explorer's club, should they be needed for anything.

Treatments like the Post-Sun Exposure Soothing Facial and Chocolate Body Wrap. Delish.

The Stargazing Rock 'n Roll party. Aahh-mazing stuff.

Dining by the ocean with only the stars and candles to light your night. There's a fee, but life is short.

What We'd Change

The resort's beach offers shallow waters so, while you won't be wave-surfing here, bring your snorkel gear and splash into the crystal-clear waters and explore the amazing coral reefs.

Why You Should Go

It's 60 miles from the airport, but once you get there you'll be glad you're tucked away.
