puerto rico wyndham rio mar
had a great time wyndham rio mar was excellent very lively at night with live music in lobby bar pool bar had great drinks and great view of sunset great choices with restaurants will definitely stay here again
The Resort as mentioned is located a stone throw away from the el yunque rain forest. It is a good , clean resort with all the amenities functioning as expected. we were little disappointed when they put us on the first floor (was expecting to be on higher floor as we paid for ocean front view).
Also I didn't know that we have to pay for our parking, was under impression that parking was included in the stay. Parking garage is pretty small and tight. I am not complaining about the tight spots but for the resort of this size , you expect much better parking facility also parking should have been included in the stay.
Mandara spa was really good, fairly priced. One of the showers in the spa was broken., the towels provided in the changing room were smelling oil, I am not sure if it is expected that way as this was my first spa experience.
The private beach was well maintained and the complimentary beach umbrellas are put out by staff by 9 AM
The food options available on site in resort were not that great(my opinion though). I was expecting more of local dishes but all we were presented were Italian and more traditional American cuisine.
Tiki bar and grill , located by the activity pool was really awesome. the drinks and the dishes choice they have are really good. that's the only local food option you have in resort in my opinion.
Seabreeze restaurant looks dead to me , there are barely any visitors to this restaurant even though it is right next to pool and tiki bar.
This resort is also just 5 mins drive away to luquillo kiosks, which is great place to try local food and eateries. One MUST try these outlets if you are to enjoy the peurto rican food.
Overall this resort is pretty clean , well maintained and away from downtown
Love This resort because it's far away from San Juan. The beaches Are never crowded, neither is the pool. Rent-A-Car and get all the food that you want on the way… So you don't have to do the all-inclusive plan. The restaurants are overpriced and you can get whatever you want in the local towns. Love this place, this is my third time here.
The Resort is amazing. It's close to the airport, the bio bay, the rainforest, Old San Juan and the ferry to Culebra island. It is super relaxing, romantic, clean and easy to find. It is expensive at the gift shops and restaurants but that is to be expected. Wonderful resort I would recommend to anyone and great price through cheapcaribbeab.com

What is the minimum check in age for this hotel? 18 or 21?2 answers
2 years, 27 months ago
em
The resort's adult rates start at 18 years old, and they do not list a minimum age for check in, however during certain times of year (spring break for example) they may require someone over the age of 21 be in your party in order to check you in. We would recommmend contacting the hotel directly regarding these policies.

no and it's a little pricey. The bill adds up quickly....but it is a gorgeous property. Go to the resort web page and it should list menus and prices. Looooved this resort. You will enjoy it

No, this hotel is not all-inclusive. I don't think there is one at all in Puerto Rico. This hotel is VERY expensive for all food. The resort is a mile from any sort of convenience store so if you want to goo off property a rental is required. It was $55.00 per day to rent at the resort, so it is best to get the car from the airport.

We will be traveling with 3 young children. Do any of the hotels offer 2 double beds and a roll-away option so that we can all stay in the same room?6 answers
I am not comfortable having the children in a separate room, and really don't want to spend twice as much money for our vacation and not be able to sleep with my husband! Suggestions?
2 years, 26 months ago
Jill
There are some destinations that allow 5 people in one room. The best deals are going to be in the Riviera Maya and Punta Cana. As far as the specific bedding you are looking for, that is going to vary by resort. Your best bet is to use the gold Create Your Own Vacation box on the left side of our home page. Simply plug in your travel dates, departure city, desired location, and 1 room with 5 people (make sure you fill in the ages of the children). This will bring up all of the resorts for that destination that can accommodate 5 people. From there you can investigate the type of bedding they offer.
JenCC
My standard room had two double beds (maybe even Queen)and there was something tucked away in the closet that may have been an air mattress, although I'm not sure. I got the sense that the hotel would have provided one for a young child if needed.
LStandke
I don' blame you! The Rio Mar room we booked had two queen beds, and I know they have roll-aways there. There were many families with young children there when we visited, late March 2011.
BuckeyeMama
They had double beds in the room, but not much space for a roll-away bed.
sonrae
yes they do offer double beds which I what I stayed in. I'm not sure about the roll away bed, though.
Coqui1
The Wyndman Rio Mar hotel has two queen size beds and we had a rollaway brought in for our son. The cost is $20 per night. My son is 20 and he slept very well on this bed.

The recommended area for surfing is in Barbados on Dover Beach. The best way to narrow down your search for a resort that will meet your needs please proceed to the toolbar called "HOTELS" on CheapCaribbean.com. Then click on "Hotel Finder" and this will allow you to narrow down your search and pick the best resort fit for your needs.

Just got home last week ..fishing on the reef was the only option due to high winds...if you fly fish head to the west end at paradise cove, plenty of bones and barraccta also a great place to snorkle for only 3 bucks or 18 with rented gear. Just rent a car only 70 for the 24 hr and a cab would cost hundeds its crazy what they charge you will see to port lucica its 21 for two people and its all of a ten min drive. Bring your own cups for the bar . Drink a yellow bird

i keep seeing the resort is completely non smoking - completely??
1 year, 23 months ago

I am not sure but my husband did.
Ashbys
Yes, we were able to smoke on the balcony. There are smoking areas outside the restaurants and tiki bar. They also allow you to smoke at the beach and by the pools.
JEANNIE2424
This is a smoke free hotel. So I don't think they allow smoking on the balconies either. There weren't any ashtrays in the room.
ProfessionalVacationer
This may be the case indoors. But while we were there, they sold Cuban cigars right on the resort. People smoked in the outdoor bars.
mrpaul
I don't know what the official rules state but there were definitely people smoking on their balconies, at the pool, and on the beach.

My husband is a smoker and when we went in 2006, he smoked on our balcony and they did have a few designated areas for smoking outside. I don't know if things have changed since then.

what are the golf green fees per person3 answers
Is the golf course on the property and are there any discounts for play.
1 year, 23 months ago
Russ
Green fees include: cart, club storage, tees and locker room access. All rates are subject to change and vary based on the time of year.
18 Holes:
Hotel Guest $85 - $165
Walk-in $110 - $180
9 Holes:
Hotel Guest $50 - $95
Walk-in $60 - $115
Club Rental: $55 (per set)
Shoes Rental: $15 (per pair)
Unlimited Range Balls: $15 (per day/person)
Second Round Rate/Cart Fee: $35 (per person)
Rider Fee: Free
KellyCC
The golf courses are on the property and there is a shuttle from the hotel lobby every 10-15 minutes. At 2:00 the green fees drop to $75 per person. Also there is a VIP card that will get you 25% off. Not off twilight rates though. Not certain how you get the card, it was included in our package from CheapCaribbean.
CBang
The course is right on the property in front of the hotel. It appeared to be in good shape, but I did not get to play while I was there and never checked the rates.

Thank you for considering CheapCaribbean.com in planning your vacation! We have a variety of properties you can choose from that are all-inclusive. Our biggest all-inclusive destinations are Mexico, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Puerto Rico does not specialize in all inclusive packages, which generally include all meals, drinks- alcoholic and non alcoholic-room and gratuities. This particular resort offers a modified plan which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner only. You can search specifically for all inclusive properties on our website by selecting the Hotel Finder tab on our home page. Select your destination, AI (all inclusive) and whatever your primary requirements are and a list of qualifying properties will be displyed. Should you require any further assistance feel free to call one of our experienced destination specialists.

No. I believe there are no all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Rico. Paying for food, drinks and activities will add a substantial expense to your trip - possibly even double the cost.

what is the charge to upgrade from resort view to ocean view?6 answers
1 year, 21 months ago
Amy
Our room was an ocean view and I think all of the rooms were ocean view. There is a fee to upgrade to the Preferred Side of the resort.
dmthomas
I don't know Amy. We had a resort view and it was fine for us. When you spend most of your time outdoors, you have the ocean view, so often times we don't upgrade because there is a large price difference and it is not crucial for us, personally, to have. Please check with the resort for the actual cost and if they have any promotions.
piscesmom
The additional price to upgrade does depend on several factors such as travel dates, availability, etc. Unfortunately, we are unable to give an estimate based on these conditions.
MariaCC
We booked run of house (ROH) and since it is offseason we were upgraded at no charge. Of course, we explained it was our 25th anniversary and I tipped the clerk $10.00.
harrisonguitars
I believe it was about $200...

We arrived at the Resort around 7:30pm on a Monday and left the resort to catch our 3:30am flight in San Juan at 12:30am on Saturday. There is an Enterprise Car Rental in the lobby and for only about $80 a day you can drive where ever you want. We went to Old San Juan which is only about a 40 minute drive. The whole Island is only about 200+ miles across and 30+ from top to bottom.
LeeB4
Yes, you can travel throughout PR. We went into to Old San Juan twice and the western part of the Island too.

We rented a car and the ride is about 45 minutes, but the hotel does offer a shuttle service to and from the airport for a fee.

I purchased Vouchers
Tiger1
They use "Dragonfly" transportation service. They are very good. If you planning to rent a car pick it up at the airport, the resort is a very easy drive, approx. 40 minutes to an hour depending the time of the day and the rout You pick. Route 66 is faster, the toll is 1dollar 50 cents (US), at the end of the toll road get on Rt 3, watch for the sign, turn left, less than a mile to the resort. I liked Rt. #187, follows the shore line.
ocsi
You can book a transportation through CheapCaribbean.com. It's very convenient and safe. You can also take a taxi from airport.
Selina
Rent a car at the airport. It is pretty easy to get to resort. It is about 20 miles and takes about 40 mins because of traffic. DO NOT take the shuttle offered. The company running it is not professional and the bus is old and bumpy. Made me sick. The shuttle is NOT free.
Cass03
We used Dragonfly Adventures as our transfer from the San Juan airport and the hotel. It would be cheaper to rent a car as it would offer transportation for other day trips or back and forth from tennis and golf to hotel.
pastornick
You need to book the round trip transfer with CC. They pick you up and take you then you have nothing to worry about. When you book they give you that option to buy in advance. If you are not getting a car do this.

Hi Cathy,
To determine the price of a package for a single traveller, simply adjust the number of passengers to "1" and the package will price accordingly. The website defaults to 2 passengers travelling because the resort pricing is based on 2 people per room, however you may adjust the number of travellers as needed.
ccsusan1
Cathy, I took this trip alone. My girlfriend was not able to make this trip with me; and, I really needed to get away, so I went on this adventure alone. I have no regrets.
There are no extra fees for a one room occupancy...at least not at the Wyndham Resort.

No buffets on site, all restaurants were sit down except for the ERL cafe which has very limited choices. The outdoor options near the pool were good and reasonable, and you could take food back to the room, but hours were somewhat limited and not clearly posted.

We just returned. Dining is pricey. The only buffet is a breakfast one at Marabellas for $24/pp. It is worth it! HUGE selection, delicous food. We were full for the rest of the day. We had burgers, salads from the TIKI bar (avg $14/burger) But the food was great!. There's a stand near the casino that serves pizza, sandwiches, desserts, muffins, coffee that's reasonable. We ate our "celebration" meal at Marabellas. They put flowers on the tables, the food was excellent. Bill for 2 was $92. They had a $5.00 drink special that night. All the food we had may have been pricey, but it was delicous. We decided to stay at the resort and not rent a car/cab and just eat there. Hope this helps
RUinLove2
The dinning restaurants are very elegant and nice. There is a sandwich/smoothy stand that has excellent wraps, sandwiches, etc. Also, the poolside Tiki Hut is awesome and has nightly happy hour. The food is good there too.
ClassySam
they have a buffet breakfast and on Friday have a carribean theme buffet. If you go to the Rio Mar website you can download all the menus and the prices are accurate since I was just there. We ate at the pool everyday. Had room service twice and ate in San Juan one night and at at the Italian Restaurant that had a price fixed menu. So you can be picky but some restaurants are expensive but I would expect nothing less from this Resort; it is first class.

Yes, you may fly out of Charlotte, NC or Pittsburgh, PA, it really doesn't matter. Try to book your flight through Luis Munoz Marin International Airport...you and your party will just fine.
In addition, please try to have a shuttle arranged to pick you up from the airport (round trip). Its way better than getting a cab.

can we bring our own liquor to the pool7 answers

k
For specific questions pertaining to their rules and regulations, we do suggest contacting the resort directly. The email address found on the resort's website is info-riomar@Wyndham.com.
MariaCC
Yes u can, I don't think it's encouraged, but I saw people with their own coolers by the pool & we even brought down the ice container from the room and used it for drinks by the pool
Boricua87
You can't take your own liquor to the pool but we did see many people on the private beach with coolers.
Johnson
you can bring anything you want to the pool. We brought our own snacks from home and enjoyed them all week. If you are able to buy a bottle of liquor then you can but you cannot have coolers at the pool but the beach you can. They are very good that way.
nicci111
Yes. Take a bucket of ice and drinks, food, and chill in the lounge chairs.
SultrySiren
Yes

This is tricky. You can bring your own drinks but you cannot have any glass bottles or coolers at the pool. You CAN have a cooler at the beach area. We brought a cooler to the pool area which only had 2 liter bottles of soda in it and we were asked to remove the cooler. If you don't mind bringing your own drinks down in plastic cups you will not have any problems.

How far is this hotel from Old San Juan?9 answers

Boricua87
45 minutes. I took a Dragon Fly tour van and paid 122 dollars for three of us. I liked it because they pick you up drop you off for 4 - 5hours and then bring you home. But if you want action from the city then find a hotel near San Juan. I loved the Rio Mar but it is not near San Juan. Some people rent cars which I may do next time but didn't really want to sight see a lot. I enjoyed the pool and the ocean and just relaxed. There is a fee to park your car at the hotel. You need to know if you want to go out a lot or stay in the resort.

Is it possible to book flights and a hotel for only part of the stay?2 answers
For example, a trip from Wed-Mon, but a hotel only for 3 of those nights?
New York
We can certainly book a custom package for your specific travel needs. These types of modified packages would need to be done via telephone with one of our experienced Beach Experts. There is no additional charge to book with an agent via telephone.
MariaCC
It did not work through Cheap Carrebian. I was traveling with my husband, and he was staying for one extra day (but did not need the hotel for that extra night). I had to book my flight and hotel through Cheap Carrebian, telling them that only one person is staying in the room, then I booked his flight through another website, it was not more expensive this was (I added up the numbers). Then I called the hotel and told them that two people are staying in that room.
However, other websites offer that option.

The resort sits beachfront with beautiful turquoise waters and a full mile of golden sand. Towels, chaise lounges and umbrellas are available on the beach.
KristenCC
The beach is nice and you can walk for miles.
JoseR
If you walk east you can only walk a short distance because of the Rio Grande River flowing past the property. If you head west, it looks like you can walk for miles and miles. We walked both directions quite a ways.
chairmtngranny
Beach in from of the hotel is about a mile. Past that it doesn't get cleaned much and looks sad. By the hotel though, it is pristine. It is a public beach everywhere,
Bronenosets
The beach is not white sand, more like California beach sand. You can walk for miles each way, but they do not allow you to take and keep seashells you find on beach (they want you to buy them in the gift shop). We still kept our seashells though.
Micky38
The beach is beautiful. Lots of sand and plenty of room. While we were there the surf was very strong, extremely large waves. Plent of chairs and umbrellas which the staff will deliver and set up for you and yes, there is a lot of beach you can walk, this is not a small isolated beach area.

During May the temperatures in Puerto Rico typically vary between a daily high of about 87.0 degrees and a daily low of approximately 74.0 degrees
Puerto Rico has the same Summer months as us!

I went the end of May and weather was beautiful. I packed summer clothes. On average it was around 85 everyday.
LadyDee
Weather is beautiful, in the 80's. their summer is June-August, extremely hot and uncomfortable.
PPrincess74
I just returned from 4 days from Rio Mar Puerto Rico and the weather is 90 during the day and 80 maybe at evenings. We were told that the weather is like that all year round. It did shower on and off but its quick. Very nice place to go and we will be going back.
Falkie6
We traveled to PR the last weekend in April and the weather was hot. It was 80+ every day, with sunny skies during the day, although always one big gray cloud around 3pm. Not bad though - didn't rain and we were able to get nearly a full day of sun in.

Are there any hotels/beaches with smoking on the grounds/rooms? Which ones?4 answers
How are the fishing expedition rates?
Which hotels have internet in the room?
North Carolina (mountains)
Smoking is not permitted anywhere at the Wyndham Rio Mar. Puerto Rico is generally a non-smoking jurisdiction and many hotels impose strict controls on smoking in guest rooms, public areas, restaurants and by the pools. If you are a smoker, you should contact the hotel directly to get their individual policies.
KellyCC
We had 3G on our phones everywhere at the hotel, but they charge for in room internet.
ChefChanda
They let you smoke in rooms. Although not in the restaurants or pool. You can smoke on the beach.
They have Internet but charge you to use the wifi.
We paid $75 a person for the boating/snorkeling trip. We went with the cattermeran, it was awesome.
PPrincess74
We just returned from Rio Mar Puerto Rico and my friend smokes and there are designated smoking areas throughout the facility. Non indoors which is understandable. Internet you can pay for in your room, but it is free in the lobby area only.

How much should I budget for food?6 answers
Me and my husband trying to budget but since it's not all inclusive, how much should we plan a day for food and couple drinks?
Krestik
It depends if you rent a car you probably need $60-70 a day considering that you eat at local cheap restaurants. Go to El Jefe Burger shack and El Verde BBQ, they are both (2-3 miles away from the resort)
Adelina
Food is expensive
At least $100 per day . Breakfast Buffett was 24$ so if you don't eat lunch and then eat dinner it's anywhere from 15$ - 45$.
You can get around some of this by getting food from the deli/coffee shop located next to the casino. They also have pizza there.
Beachy13
Renting a car will certainly offer you more flexibility, as far as food and restaurant choices; you would still need to weigh the cost of the rental car to what you would be saving (keeping in mind any possible parking costs at the resort). If you plan on eating at the resort $100/day is a good guideline and bill prices will vary depending on what you are drinking. It may be a good idea to contact the resort and ask if they can fax you menus from their restaurants. With this information, you'll be able to pick and choose where to dine each day and have a firmer idea of the prices you'll be paying. The Wyndham can be reached at 787-888-6000, or toll free at 1-800-474-6627.
LaurenCC
i found the prices are typical for a nice resort. the burgers are $14, the drinks are $11 and this is at the outside tiki hut. the restaurants are quite a bit more expensive.
sundaisy
It cost us about $100/day each.
DNYC
If you plan on staying on the resort then budget about $100 a meal, if you leave the resort then you could get away with $100 a day.

Can you book airport shuttle with Cheap Carribean after you have made your reservation? We weren't sure when we booked whether to book it or not but we are now interested
2 weeks ago
wash dc
yes you can. I made my reservations then three weeks later I called and added tranportation. Just give your self enough time to make the changes. They will send you a trasnportation voucher via email that you print and give to the driver the day of your trip. Enjoy!
Excursionbabe
You can. You'll get reminders a few weeks before your trip, and you'll have the option to do so then. Honestly, though, I'd recommend renting a car instead, unless you intend to never leave the resort. There is a row of kiosks nearby which are great for getting dinner.
Gumbercules
you can, but I would recommend renting a car. Figure out if it is worth the overnight parking ($20/day or self park for $15) vs what it would transfers and renting a car when there. You will have to rent a car. Excursions are over priced along with food on site and nothing is close enough to walk.
Anonymous
I called the hotel and was able to reserve a shuttle with them, for what I assume would be a similar price with Cheap Carribean. Also check with the hotel on taxi options. In Puerto Rico, it was cheaper for 2 people to take a taxi than the hotel shuttle.
jlg0
Yes. Please contact our existing reservations department at 1-800-915-2322. The first available agent will be happy to add the airport transfers to your reservation.
BILLCC
I recommend renting a car - the cost to park per day at the resort is $15 and everything is up or down Rt 3 - you can go to Old San Juan or travel to the rain forest - We rented a car for 3 days at $100 total!

Hotel Description
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa: Experience
Adventure in the Caribbean
Carpet putting deserves its own pro circuit, but nothing compares to the real
thing. Nestled between El Yunque Rainforest and Fajardo's bioluminescent bay,
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa is touted as the
Caribbean's premiere golf resort and home to two world-class golf courses.
Tucked into the "Island of Enchantment," Wyndham Grand Rio Mar offers 600 elegant
rooms and a tropical setting, majestic mountains and the rhythmic, rolling
waves of the Atlantic.
The Ocean Course, designed by Tom and George Fazio, is sheer panorama. Aptly
named for its spectacular ocean views, this course features multiple bunkers,
elevated greens and four sets of tees. A favorite among guests, mostly for the
iguanas and the signature 16th hole.
While the Fazios took a liking to the trade winds, Greg Norman's first-ever
Caribbean design, the River Course, is 6,945 yards of rolling green along the
Mamayes River. Norman took care to preserve the native foliage of this
challenging course, embraced by mountain vistas and seashores, and to allow the
natural terrain to determine the placement of all holes. Rumor has it that
every hole is a signature hole here.
Non-golfers aren't forgotten, thanks to one mile of gorgeous beach with lots
of fun activities, two stunning pools, one for adults and one for families and
a 20,000-sq-ft sun deck. And if your putter fails you, perhaps Lady Luck is
waiting to smile on you at the casino. Or maybe a session at the spa will help
you unwind over that last drive?
As nighttime approaches, stash the clubs and return to Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa to observe the legendary bioluminescent bay of nearby Fajardo, where
microorganisms create a mysterious blue-green light that illuminates the calm
waters. After a dinner of sushi and Thai delights at Shimas Sushi Bar, retreat
to 400-sq-ft, Ocean View Room. Snuggle into the king-sized bed to dream of the
birdies or a hole in one!
