Relaxing!

We travelled with our kids (girls 20 and 18, boy 14). There was something for everyone! Our favorite parts by far was the pool area. There were so many options to have quiet or to be right in the center of the action. Also lots of shade or sun options. The service was great. The swim up bar music could have been more upbeat. The pool activities were fun! My 18 year old joined in on them all. She loved the mechanical bull and the race on the floating mat. She wears her "winner" t-shirt with pride :) The food at the Japanese restaurant was exceptional. We went there twice. We tried all the restaurants and thought they were all good. Nice, friendly service. The rock and roll show was super. The other shows were not that great. Since we had 5 of us we had two rooms right next to each other. They were clean and always stocked with cold beverages. We upgraded to be ocean-side and it was worth every penny. The sunsets were top notch! We took a break and went to the surf town of Sayulita. It was just a couple hour adventure and was worth it. We also went to PV. We were not as impressed. The boardwalk was fun to people watch but the shopping was typical. We had a blast and made many lasting memories!

Not exactly a 5-star hotel

The hotel is huge. One big pool, kids pool, kids club, shows every evening. There is a very nice private beach with a bar. The bad side is the location of the hotel: 40 mins from the airport and the Puerto Vallarta center. Not a problem if you're going to stay in the hotel for the whole period of time, but if you decide to take a tour anywhere, be prepared to pay $80-$100 just for the transportation roundtrip. Due to the hotel distance the taxi service doesn't have competitors, so the drivers just declared fixed prices and don't bargain. Btw, don't pay with dollars, the exchange rate in taxi is insane. Even the hotel's rate is better. In general it's a great place to have a vacation. However, there were issues which I personally didn't like: 1. For the cocktails they use the cheapest ingredients. Any cocktail that includes a juice component had a strong chemical odor and taste. The only good cocktails were those that are based on soda. The alcohol was of a good quality, though. 2. The room was stinking. We didn't request the change since we wanted to stay close to our friends in the neighbor room. The odor was so strong that I'm sure the hotel staff was aware of it, but still they offered this room to us. Looks like they expected to hear a claim and replace the room if requested, but I think that a 5-star hotel must not offer such rooms to the guests in the first place. 3. They were cleaning up the room twice a day which could be a good point if only they did it at the proper time. Our room was cleaned at 2PM first time and at 8PM second time. I don't get the point of such schedule. 4. The room bar was refilling very irregularly. In spite of they were visiting the room twice a day they could leave the bar half-empty for the whole day. In general, I've spend this vacation well but it could be better without these issue.

Great beach and location - ok food

Location & Beach: 5/5 The Iberostar is located in a great, though somewhat remote, location. The beach here is fantastic. It's large, clean, soft sand, and the water stays shallow for a long ways out, so it's great for swimming and body surfing. There aren't other major resorts nearby, or a large city in this cove, so the beach is completely uncrowded. The resort has plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas, and good beach service. The waves are perfect for body surfing, or boogie boarding, but probably not ideal for surfing. The location is about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. We rented a car, and the drive was very easy and safe to get to the resort from the airport. There are several great towns within a few minutes drive of the Iberostar. Sayulita is about 15-20 minutes north and is a very fun surf town with great food and shopping. San Pancho (San Francisco) is just a little farther north - maybe 25 minutes from the resort. It was by far our favorite spot. Very small and authentic, friendly, and had some terrific restaurants. We visited San Pancho on a Thursday night for dinner. The street was full of live music and performers, and the beach was full of people sitting around fires playing guitars and singing. The resort is also very close to Punta Mita, which is where snorkeling tours leave for the Marietas Islands, so you can easily get out to the islands, snorkel for 90 minutes, and be back to the resort in time for lunch. Food/Drinks/Service The food here, in our opinion, was just OK. There are two buffets, a beach grill, and 4 or 5 specialty restaurants. Buffet: 2/5 I'm not a fan of buffets in general, and the buffets here were no exception. The food was passable to fill up before hitting the beach, but by the end our our week long trip, we were happy to have better breakfast options. The omelets were decent, and the girl cooking omelets remembered my order everyday, which was impressive. The service in the buffet dining room was lacking. Im not sure if they were understaffed, but getting coffee or a mimosa was always challenging... some breakfasts we could not get anyone to bring us coffee. Servers would walk right by our table carrying coffee pots, but not stop to ask if we wanted any. We had to aggressively wave them down. In a couple of instances, I just took my cup to the servers station and poured my own. The service at all the other restaurants was fantastic, but at the breakfast buffet, not so good. Beach Grill: 2/5 The beach grill has hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, and nachos. The hamburgers were pretty terrible. When cooked the patty looked like a round piece of cardboard, and tasted overly salty. The hotdogs were a little better. The fries were good. The nachos were ok, but the cheese didn't have any flavor. Specialty Restaurants: 4/5 The specialty restaurants were all pretty good. The Japanese Hibachi was our favorite. We also tried the Mexican restaurant, steak house, and the International/French. The mexican place was good, but the food in Sayulita and San Pancho was much better. The international place was decent. The steak house was ok. Beverages: 3/5 The liquor selection was also ok - definitely not top shelf, but they had some decent options. The cocktails were mediocre. They seemed to use cheap mixes for things like margaritas and pina coladas. For beer, they had Dos Equis Amber or Especial. In the rooms they also had another brand of beer i hadn't heard of before - can't recall the name. The included wine selection was limited, but not too bad. For Tequila, they had Don Julio hidden away, when I asked for it, sometimes they gave it, some times they didn't. One time I asked for it and the server looked to his manager and said "can we use the Don Julio?" The manager kind of eyed me for a second, then nodded back. It seems like they are selective about which guests they give it to. One server declined and told me the resort didn't stock it at all - this was after I had had it several times. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the resort. The location was great for accessing some of the less touristy towns in the area. The beach was nice and uncrowded. The food was tolerable, and being so close to Sayulita and San Pancho made it so we could easily get good authentic (and cheap) mexican food when we got tired of the resort food.

Perfect Family Vacation

This resort exceeded our expectations. Our transportation was ready when we arrived, check in was fast and smooth. Everyone in the lobby area greeted us. I must say I was a little concerned about spring breakers but to our surprise the resort was nice and quiet. Note: Playa De Mita is about 30-45 minutes away from the airport away from the hotel/resort zone. Our room was clean and super comfortable. Marco at the pool was awesome going around the pool area switching wet towels for dry ones. Fabi and Ene were awesome with their service. No long wait for drinks. Our 2 year old loved the kids area and our 13 year old enjoyed the pool activities. This resort is very kid friendly. No wait at the restaurants. Buffet had several options (tacos were our favorite). Overall, we had a great time and we plan to go in June or September. We also had the opportunity to visit Bucerias small town 30 minutes away.
