Beautiful!
This was my boyfriend and I first all inclusive vacation and it as wonderful! After months of looking at different hotels I chose the RIU, and we were so happy that we did! The beach was big and gorgeous, and the hotel/room was just what we were looking for! The staff was very welcoming and pleasant. The hotel was huge, and it seemed like families with children were put on one side and couples/older groups on the other. The one side of the beach had loud music and dancing on the beach along with activities, the other side was more peaceful. We enjoyed both. We both loved the drinks & buffets. We actually skipped over the steakhouse on the last night to eat at the buffet. There was a variety of food every day & night and everything was delicious. Not knowing that my boyfriend needed long pants, we could not eat in two of the restaurants because he did not bring them. We did however eat in the Asian restaurant (also buffet) which was very good. There was nightly entertainment which was good! Mondays they have a beach party, which we missed because we left that day. We went zip lining (which I recommend!) and the booze cruise to Dunns river falls (which I also recommend!) For the zip lining, girls, wear long shorts, and you will need sneakers. For the falls, I wore my sneakers on the boat thinking that I needed them, but they offer rental water shoes if you do not have them $6.00 which I got and I am glad I did. We did purchase a $40.00 video of everyone climbing the falls (& was supposed to include pictures), but we haven’t been able to get that DVD to work, so I am disappointed with that. I suggest bringing a water proof camera, I wish I did! Bring lots of cash and tipping is very much appreciated!! We had a really nice relaxing vacation, just what we were looking for! I highly recommend the RIU in Ochos Rios!

Very hard to understand the reservation policy. People at each establishment told us they were never full, but we could not make a reservation, being told it was all booked. We checked several times and most of the seats in each place were empty. Something is wrong.
My husband surprised me with a trip to RIU Ocho Rios for my birthday. The beach was beautiful and the service great. I would totally go back and recommend it to anyone.

A great trip
The hotel- is very nice and clean. The staff is sweet and friendly. However my only complaint is the bed was very hard and the sheets were rough. We got the ocean front room and our view was amazing. Oh and the rooms aren't very sound proof so whe the were playing loud music at the pool or beach you could definaty hear it in ur room.
The beach- the beach at the hotel is great! It's clean, long , lots of white sand. Also to the left if looking at the water there is reef a little ways out right before the rope where there is great snorkeling. We took an excursion to Snorkel and it wasn't half as good as what was in our backyard.
The food- Unlike other reviews , I was easily able to get food reservations. But I did it right after we checked in. Sir John's was my favorite. The buffets were pretty good, not great but not bad. You must try the Jerk hut on the beach near the pier! It was amazing and the sausage is the best I've ever had and I'm from Texas so I have had some good sausage. Definately get reservations though because that's the good stuff!
Excursions- we did the zip line .... AMAZING! By far my husband and my favorite! Also we did the horseback ride, and dunns river falls/ snorkel combo. If I could change anything I would prob take back the horde ride and do the bob sled or combo the bobsled and falls, Bc like I said above the snorkeling was way better for free at the hotel.
Recommendations - take a taxi set up by the hotel and explore Ochoa rios , there is a great market ( but very pushy - you just have to understand its culture ) and eat authentic Jamaica food , we ate at a place called moms and it was super cheap and good ! Shop around for excursion deals they are the same excursion and on person might charge 60 ea and another might be 75 ea

Riu Ocho Rios is approximately an hour and a half from the Montego Bay Airport, and a short 15-20 minute drive to Dunn's River.

We didn't go directly to Dunn's River Falls. We did a tour booked through Cheapcaribbean.com and went on a catamaran tour first for some snorkeling, then sailed to Dunn's River Falls, had some food and drinks and sailed back.

We drove from the airport to ocho rios, then we went to the falls the following couple of days. Seems like it's about a hour and a half from the airport to Ocho Rios, then it takes maybe a half an hour to 45 minutes to get to the falls. It's hard to find, the sign is tricky to locate, it will be on your right, unless you pass it, like we did. But it's easier to see the sign once you turn around and are headed back toward Ocho Rios.

Hey, Todd. We just came back from Dreams Cancun. Had a fabulous time, but I'm afraid to say, we did not see anywhere you could surf. Waves simply were not even close to surf-worthy!

I would not think so.
The area around Porto Morales had NO surf whatsoever. The only whitecaps we saw were >1' and only at high tide.
I would look at the nearby areas and certainly research going further south towards/past Tulum for surfing.
But I do not think this area in general is suitable for surfing.

(Riu Ochos Rios) We are not surfers but we noticed that the waves were not very big and they break really far out because of the coral reefs. It seemed that even though they took us out snorkeling almost a mile from shore, we were in pretty shallow water with a lot of reefs around. I would guess that it's not a very good surfing spot. We didn't see any surfers while we were there.

Yes. I used this site to book to St. Croix and the final price was the final price. I got a package that covered flight, hotel, and a car to and from the airport. I booked three months in advance and was never charged anything additional.

The final price is all you have to pay. At times bus drivers, guides, bell boys, bartenders, etc may make statements about tipping, but it is not required. So if you added the airport transfer on the site into your package, you are all set. If you add tours not from the site obviously those would be additional. Also there is a spa at the resort and that would be a fee if you choose to do that. My first time to the Riu Ocho Rios, on the way home my the airline charged my for my checked bag, but my airline this year did not.

Most travelers take a taxi or if they are taking an excursion they are provided with transfers from the vendor themselves. Please keep in mind, most people do not travel on their own in Jamaica.

It seemed that most tourists get around by taxi or buses/vans (booked through the hotel). We did take notice that the taxis overcharge tourists from the hotels - so if you call a taxi definitely negotiate a price first before getting in. A local told us its only supposed to be a $1 to go a few miles into town and they were charging $35 from the hotel. I definitely would not rent a car though (they drive on the left side and they drive craaazy). Not to mention there's a lot of really narrow back roads to get places and seems it would be easy to get lost (unless you're only going from the airport to your hotel. In that case there is one major road that goes all the way around the island). I never saw any tourists on mo-peds, only some locals. Hope that helps!

Only leave your resort with a tour company. We hired a driver to take us to the casino in town and was scared to death. Going to the Sony Center or Taj Maahal for shopping is OK, but you have to take a taxi which in this case we had no problems.

There are lots of activities to keep your entire family entertained. There are daily and nightly entertainment programs for all ages as well as tennis, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling and windsurfing-all included as part of your all inclusive package.

While there may be an ATM on property, please note that your bank/credit card company may charge a higher than normal fee for using an ATM outside of the US. We suggest checking with your banking institution prior to departure, or taking the necessary cash with you on your trip.

Guests staying at the Riu Ocho Rios may use a metal detector on the beach as long as it does not disturb other guests. Should someone complain to the hotel staff the guest would be asked to stop immediately.

I would book transit through Cheap Caribbean. We only did a one way transport. You will have to go to the agent a day or two before you leave and get everything set up. The agent sits around the corner from the night club.

The shuttle ride was about 2hrs with only two resort stops..including my resort...be prepared for a lengthy ride and I recommend a direct flight be because u will loose a day just traveling.

Our total travel time from the airport to the resort was about 2 hours. We had to stop to drop off people at three separate resorts on the way, as well as stopping at this little shack for a "break". They basically wanted you to buy stuff to help the locals.

Not what I would call a casino. The resort casino was maybe 20'x20' with maybe 20 slot machines that used play coins, most of which didn't work. We were told there is a "big" casino in town. We went there and it was maybe 2x's the size of the one at RIU, and most of those didn't work either. The main reason to NOT go there is we didn't feel safe. Only locals there, no tourists. The Police officer at the door uses a metal detector to check for guns. That should have been our first clue. While we were waiting in the van while the driver was picking up 100 pcs of KFC for a guest at our hotel, we felt like fish in a fish bowl. Locals were coming up to the windows....scary. Keep your money - Jamaica is not the place for gambling.

The Riu Montego Bay is a short 15 minute drive from the air port while the Riu Ocho Rios will be close to 2 hours away

Some opinions are that the beaches are better in Ocho Rios. You will be closer to Dunn's River Falls which is not to be missed! This resort offers Windsurfing, Sailing, Kayaking and Snorkel gear. These amenities are subject to change.

Ocho Rios is about 1.5 hours east of Montego Bay so if you're ok with taking a bus ride each way at the beginning and end of the trip? Ocho Rios has more excursion activities to do off the resort for families although if you plan on staying on the beach / water the entire time, I don't think either place will matter / they are about the same.

I think you could actually try either area (Ocho Rios or Montego Bay). I picked Ocho Rios because it was closer to the Dunn's Waterfall and the River Tubing (we did both). I think there is more shopping and that type of thing in Montego Bay... Overall, i think either would work but you were have longer drives on the tour buses if you stay in Montego Bay to get to the Waterfall/River Tubing sites. However, we had a longer taxi ride from the airport to Ocho Rios to begin with (so you are basically choosing longer ride after the airport or longer ride to go on excursions). Hope that helps!

I wouldn't recommend Montego Bay at all. Way too close to the airport! The Riu is quieter and the disco doesn't have anything going on. But they can create their own party. Wouldn't recommend going into Ocho Rios for a party. It's safe in the day, but not sure what the club scene would be like for teens at night.

Stay in Ocho Rios! They are much closer to all the attractions, swimming with the dolphins, Dunn River Falls, snorkeling, all of that. If you stay in Montego Bay you have to drive an hour and a half to get to those things. Wastes 3 hours of a day driving for that stuff. The initial bus ride there and back kinda suck but better than having to waste half a day of your vacation driving.

Long pants for men is the only official dress code. Of course, you wouldn't wear shorts or a beach cover-up to a restaurant. A nice summery dress or linen pants and blouse for women will do. A shirt and light summer pants for men is fine. Some people got all done up in glittery dresses, but that's not necessary. Avoid the Japanese resto — it's not very good. Sir Richard is great, though.

yes, there is a swim up bar anda disco at night. A live band also plays in the one area of the hotel earlier in the evening from about 8-9 and dancing is encouraged during that time. Disco doesn't open until 11:00 after the shows are over, etc.
