Good and Bad all rolled into one!

Well, there is plenty to say about This RIU: THIS FOR SURE IS A VALUE RESORT If you are looking for luxury then stay away. Not recommended for romantic getaways or honeymoons. If you're just looking for a place to rest your head after being out on tours and the beach all day then this is the way to go. 1. The rooms: not romantic . They are not the kind of rooms you want to lounge in all day. They are clean and they do the job, but they could use upgrading. I had no problems with the AC , as others reviewers stated. There were small little ants and bugs, but that didn't bother me. I think with some updated decor the rooms would be better. They did stock our fridge with beer , soda and water everyday. The view was beautiful from the balcony. Very quite and tranquil. 2. The grounds: beautiful and well maintained. The landscaping is tropical and lush with lots of ponds and gazebos throughout out. Lots of great spots for pictures. This is a very large resort so be prepared to walk. I loved it though because it was so peacefully walking and enjoying the views. The beach is so close to the grounds which is huge plus. 3. Food: the food is just ok, nothing to write home about. You can make it work at the buffet since there is a large variety of food. From authentic Jamaican food to American and other cuisines as well. The servers were wonderful. If you treat them nicely and have manners they reciprocate . We found that if you dine at one of the restaurants where you have to make reservations the food is made with a bit more love. The restaurant itself is very small and max seating in one table is 6, but the service is excellent. It's a 4 course meal with about 3 options per course. It is very quite so it's not so great for kids, plus it's fine dining. We chose sir Richards and we were pleased. There are about 4 to choose from . The steak house was ok. I would go without that one, if I were you. The cuts of meat aren't the best. 4. Entertainment : lots of that. Lots of shows, music, poolside activities and dancing . They really do good job at keeping you entertained. 5. Pools: there are 2 large pools. One is busier than the other. The one by the gym seems to be the main pool with the music, the swim up bar and lots of kids. It's fine. It could use some upgrading on the pol tiles . They could do a better job at picking up the cups out of the water and around the pool. It gets crowed and the water gets cloudy later in the day. It's closed by 6 so they can treat it every night. The other pool seems more for adults and it's quite and less crowded. 6. The beach: amazing and heavenly ! Clean , crystal clear and lots of shade with the palm trees. Lots of free water activities. Snorkeling, there is a cash deposit , which is returned to you when you're done . Kayaking and sailing. All were great fun. Checking in and out process was quick and painless. Over all I enjoyed my stay. For the money I spent it was worth it. Next time I may take it up a notch , for a bit more luxury , but with a large family who just wants to be outside enjoying the ocean this was the way to go.

Good Vacation

My wife and I went Jamaica and stayed at the Riu Ocho Rios. The transfer was smooth. Check in was a bit hectic as there were so many people arriving at the same time but they moved fairly quickly and offered us fruit punch while in line. We were supposed to stay in a room on the 4th floor, literally over looking the ocean, but some how there was a mix up and they gave us a room on the 2nd floor for that night and said we could move to another room the next day. The second floor room was fine so we stayed the remainder of our trip. The Jr. Deluxe room was nice, spacious but we didn't like how they literally made up two separate beds and pushed them together. It was hard to be under the same covers at night together. The food, to be resort, was pretty good in the buffet. We chose to go to a few dress up restaurants on the resort but really the buffet was better. We went into the city twice. The second time the car ride to the Blue Hole was $100 - yikes!!!! All in all the resort was nice and the ocean was beautiful. They had entertainment every night from beach parties, to karaoke, to live shows. Although we didn't take our children there were a lot of families there but they didn't seem to be in the way or loud. All it all it was a good trip and we would stay again.

Disappointed

Our flight was good, as was transportation to and from the resort. The resort itself was just a disappointment. The staff would not do anything unless a tip was offered. Don't expect to get a dining reservation without a tip, for example, you will be told that the restaurants were all booked, which is not true. The food was just poor. You need to get to the buffet areas as soon as they open, otherwise you will be treated to food that is rock hard from sitting under heat lamps for hours. We were actually thrilled to get to the airport at the end of our stay, because we could finally get a bite to eat! Be sure and bring your own toiletries, there is a soap/shampoo dispenser in the shower, and that is it. No lotion, no conditioner. Know that the restaurants might have air conditioning, but since all of the doors are open, you will not feel it in the buffet areas. Super hot in all the public areas. The disco and the nearby bar had this overwhelming odor of curdled milk laced with bleach - just nasty! Loved the pool, enjoyed the beach, the staff poured good drinks. Those are the positives. We definitely won't be back.

What's to Love

It's an all-inclusive tropical oasis - lush rolling hills and an aahh-mazing, outta-this-world beach.

There's Red Stripe Beer in the fridge. Every. Day.

The stress-ousting massages and treatments at the Renova Spa. Swoon.

The Jerk Chicken Hut on the beach. You'll be jammin' here ofter. Probably daily.

The phrase you hear everywhere, "No problem, Mon." Go ahead and start practicing.

The epic snorkeling that's right on the beach. Brightly colored fish will make your underwater pics dazzle.

Dunn's River Falls and swimming with the dolphins - close by and always touristy fun.

What We'd Change

Book early if you want to eat at a restaurant that needs reservations, or face a long wait. (But hey, that's a sure sign of good food!)

Why You Should Go

The airport is about 62 miles away, but the drive through the lush hills is a stunner.

It's so worth it to upgrade to the Deluxe Wing - concierge service 24/7.

You can get a free introductory to scuba lesson in the pool. Dive in!

There are water sports out the wazoo - windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling.

On land, you can play tennis, volleyball and take an aerobics class.

The entertainment team blows it out, starting with the nightly reggae, steel drums & chill beats.

The botanical gardens of Canbrook aren't your average "flower forest." It's uber lush.
