Awesome resort

I loved this resort! Everything included here means actually everything. Only downside is the food. They have many options but some food is not good.

Misleading and not a 5 star (sun ) resort

I am going to be brutally honest with this review, starting with the pros and ending with the cons. Before i do i will say that i have been to Punta Cana resorts 4 other times and have a good feel for what the reality of expectations are. With that being said here are the Pros: The Grounds are gorgeous as expected and are a pleasure to walk around. The Beach and water are beautiful in spite of the fact that the resort had a hard time keeping up with the seaweed that normally is not an issue. This year for some reason it was quite alot and the beach had to be combed daily. It was disappointing at times that the seaweed was a deterrent, however i do not hold the resort responsible and due to their efforts it was understood. The pools were immaculate and the staff clearly worked hard to entertain the guests. The room was very comfortable and well kept during our stay. The food was average and basically as expected. What i mean by that is there is generally enough variety to find something liked. I did expect more quality considering the resort is listed as a 5 sun resort. I am comparing this to a few 4 sun resorts that i honestly found the food better. This was ot a make or break situation for me , just being honest. I did find that there was some misleading issues or lets say a bait and attempted trap that should not exist with a 5 star. One example of this is the so called 200 dollars worth of coupons given as part of the package. This was not a saving but an attempted attempt at making us spend more money than what was paid to begin with. I found that extremely tacky and not worth using. The alcohol was NOT top shelf as explained by cheap caribbeans representative. I was specifically told it was all top shelf and found that it was CLEARLY second and bottom shelf. SKY vodka IS NOT TOP SHELF. Beware that you have to ask for it or will be served the house liquor or wine. I do not feel the wine situation was as expected as well. Being wine lovers we expected more variety. The restaurants served 2 basic house wines and LIMIT you to that OR you can be BAITED into OVERPAYING huge for purchasing from a wine list. THIS i found horrible as it is NOT all inclusive at that point. WE went to the lobby to inquire about more options with wine, only to find out there was in fact a third house wine that we were offered to taste. Fortunately we did in fact like this wine. We were told that if any restaurant doesn't have it to simply ask them to call the lobby and someone will bring a bottle or two. Just know that the lesson learned here is ASK questions. We had one dinner at a restaurant that claimed they did not have the wine we asked for. WE told them to call the lobby. They tried 4 times to convince us to just have the house wine we already knew we did not like. This was not the way a 5 star should act. They did eventually come up with the wine from the lobby mandating them to accommodate us,however, our dinner was almost done. They did the right thing at that point and gave us 2 bottles for our room. I am sharing this story not so much to complain as i am to warn others to speak up with anything they find less than desirable. In most cases the resort will do their best to make you happy. I was very disappointed in the lobster and would have done the lobster dinner on the beach as a romantic gesture, however the lobster is horrible and not like we get here in the states. I would recommend the sanoa Island excursion as that was one added cost that we felt was worth the day. I want to say that in general i love the all inclusives and for the most part the time spent is fantastic in spite of some of the brutal honesty with the liquor and food. The only other issue we had was being made to leave the resort to head back to the airport at leat 1 hour TOO EARLY!! The rep for us mandated the time frame to leave and we tried in vain to make that one hour later and as it turned out , it could have been easily done with time to spare. WE Had close to 2 hours of free time when we arrived at the gate. That was excessive. I also wish to mention that the staff around the pool area was awesome with the guests. They created a ton of fun pool games and acitvities. The staff also did an excellent job of being sure we had whatever drinks we wanted at the drop of a dime ( very attentive). There are plenty of more good things to say ,however, i will round out this opinion with this; Overall the trip was great!!!! We make our own fun regardless of situation and learned you have to do so. I do not feel that we got cheated for the price we paid, however, I do honestly feel that this resort CANT or SHOULD not claim to be a 5 star. I would rate it a 4 at best. Having stayed at 4 stars on several occasions, and after my conversation with the rep from cheap caribbean.com i expected well above and beyod the 4 star and it was NOT any better than the 4 stars. If the resort was rated a 4 star i would have gotten exactly what was expected so in that regard i was disappointed.

Great time

The resort was beautiful. Loved the pool/swim up bar and lazy river. Loved the chaise lounges, shade coverings, barefoot grill, service on beach etc--just disappointed in the seaweed although Secrets tried to rake and remove it daily! Volleyball on the beach was a real plus for my group. Foam party was also a treat. Options of so much more was also great. The room and twice a day service was great. It could have been slightly cleaner here and there--especially pail in toilet area and wood on bottom of doors and walls in bathroom. Having the nightly entertainment was a treat to be able to relax and have something to do after full day. The fireshow and circus were favorites. Pirate show and international got a bit feeling too much of the same since it is the same people, same skills etc. The interactive preshows were fun too. Access to the excursions through Amstar was great--wildcat four wheel tour was great and Reef Exploration was fantastic--loved the combination of snorkeling and other water activities and massage!!!!! Restaurants were good-service always nice although we had a bit of a language barrier. And food was always good but not great. Really liked the hibaci food but was very disappointed because although our chef was nice he did not put on much of a show when the table near us had a much bigger show. We were not offered seconds like the other table looked like they were having. And we were rushed out. This was my daughter's birthday celebration so that was a real disappointment. Speaking of which, Secrets also did not recognize her birthday with a ribbon on door, notice on daily activity sheet, or anything. It was forgotten even though I told Cheap Caribbean and it was discussed during check in. The other disappointment for us was the presentation to be a VIP member. We wasted 5 hours through aggressive sales pitches. Staying for most of that was our own fault but when sales pitch three or four came along and we thought we might be okay with this smaller deal we had a problem. They said they charged our credit card before we asked over and over to actually see the contract! We left after that realization along with other details when made clear. Also wish tipping was included in the all inclusive atleast on the resort itself as in servers can't accept tips (like in Disney) It made it confusing when to tip, feeling like you missed people it should have gone to, etc. etc. Tipping on excursions and travel confusing too--some seem to share/ some don't. Think I mentioned the highest highs and lowest lows so I'm done--could talk too much. Overall even with the lows--EXCELENTE!!

Disappointed

Doesn't measure-up to the other 3 adult-only 5 star resorts we've visited. First impression was not good - over-worked staff, no resort tour after ck-in, had to ask for welcome cocktail, sales pitch immediately after ck-in. All other service was very good, very friendly workers. Nice pool, but no floats for lazy river. Beautiful beach, but water filled with seaweed. Worst thing was literally constant daily traffic of sales people, local and resort-related, on the beach: paintings, sunglasses, jewelry, hats, boat rentals, etc. Never experienced that before. Not our idea of relaxation. Have been to another resort with "sister" resort for families. The other had some separation. Not this one. We stuck to the few restaurants that were adult-only to avoid the kids-being-kids. Food was good. Liked having the grill on the beach for lunch. Yonathan was an awesome beach bartender.

What's to Love

Doing absolutely nothing (zero, nada) but chillaxin' on the sugar-white shores of the legendary Playa Bavaro.

Suites adorned in delicious, happy oranges and blues that have a furnished balcony or terrace with a Jacuzzi.

You can revel in Gilchrist & Soames® bath goodies.

There's nightly turn down service with chocolates. (Total rock star thang).

You don't have to pack your bathrobe and slippers - they're in the room.

Sinking into that between-sleep-and-waking-wonderfulness during a Moon & Stars Massage as you enjoy sparkling wine and passion fruits.

The lazy river and whirlpools where you can float for hours and hours and ... (oh, did you say something?)

You can go horseback riding, which to many, is a dream come true. (In tropical wonderlands this is rare).

What We'd Change

Though the restaurants don't require reservations, and there's the restaurants at the sister hotel, the dining onsite is a bit limited.

Why You Should Go

It's just a short 30 minute hop from the airport - enough time to get really thirsty for that sparkling welcome cocktail.

You can work up a sweat (read: burn calories) playing tennis, basketball, and volleyball, then take a dip in the ocean.

Upgrade to Preferred Club, get better rooms, a private pool, and exquisite desserts/fine liquors and more.

For a break from the (sometimes blistering) sun, there's bowling, dance lessons and Spanish lessons.

Up for a jaunt into the wild? Go on an eco-adventure tour and or an ATV ride, but buckle up.

There are five awesome golf courses nearby to get your game on. Schwing.

Make a splash with kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing. (Woot!)

A doctor is on call 24/7. Always good to know, especially for hypochondriacs.
