BAD!!!

For all the reviews I read prior to booking this vacation, I was excited to go to this resort. That was my first mistake. The food there was terrible. If you wanted to eat at one of the restaurants you would have to book it 2 days in advance. That's not to say the food there was any better. My boyfriend and I both got food poisoning mid way through the vacation. And on top of the terrible food all they tried to do was up sell you. From the staff trying to get you to pay an astronomical amount of money for a time share to the guys selling stuff on the beach. We were at the beach not even an hour and had 8 people come up to us trying to sell us garbage. Thought I was getting a deal booking this. Truth is you get what you pay for....

Occidental Grand Punta Cana

While the resort property is beautiful and well maintained, as far as the grass, greenery, etc., there is a lot that this resort needs to upgrade and/or repair. Our room was comfortable, but the tub had chips out of it. Very pleased with the level of professionalism with our housekeeping ladies! My sister had to go through 3 rooms in order to find one with working air conditioner, and even then, their room had a very musty odor, and their tub had a giant, open crack on the bottom. The pool was very large and very refreshing. The swim up bar service was good, but the lack of name brand liquors and such, made for a very bad drink. Except for the MamaJuana!!! There were several of the showers around the resort that weren't working, so you couldn't rinse off after the beach, which made the walk from the beach to the pool very uncomfortable. Be ready for the towel game at the pool and beach. If you want a chair under an umbrella, you have to get up early and put your towels out! It would be nice if they put up extra umbrella areas around the pool. Le Buffet, in the lobby, was so unorganized! You sat yourself and that was no easy task. The service in the buffet was less than we had expected. Getting a refill on coffee took a great deal of effort! The waiters were short with us for having to keep asking for coffee, with the same answer of "one moment" which never came! We did have lunch there on our last day after check out, and must say the young lady we had was wonderful and I wish I could remember her name!! Le Buffet need a full staff of people like her! Our favorite restaurant was the Oriental! Such amazing service and the food was delicious......love how they kept the wine glass filled, and the moment you walked in the door, you were offered a very yummy drink! Next would be the Italian restaurants. Huge portions, and a wonderful antipasto bar. They say you only make reservations from 8am-12noon the day that you want the restaurant, but they are gone well ahead of time! That was frustrating. The lobby bar makes the better drinks, as they have the better mixers. Every morning I went to get a mimosa, there was NO champagne. Oh, they don't serve drinks, such as mimosa's in the buffet for some reason. I have to give a huge high five to the gentleman who makes all the pizzas in the wood fire oven! He is awesome, and the pizzas are delicious! We attended a wedding during our stay, and Christina was the coordinator and did a fabulous job!!! The bride had NOTHING to worry about and that made for a very relaxed and beautiful wedding! The staff that set up the wedding area did a great job too! We couldn't have asked for better weather, too!! While we did have more pros than cons, I was still put off by the poor service in the buffet, and just some other areas. Just used to better service when we go to an all inclusive, but it seemed that if you weren't one of the time share owners, you didn't matter. We won't return to this resort.

Recent Vacation in Punta Cana

The Amstar transportation was on time and comfortable. On arrival to the resort, staff greeted us and check in was quick and thorough. I will say that there were folks selling souvenirs and other items and were aggressive while being friendly at the same time. Overall our stay was very relaxing, room clean and comfortable. The terrace doors did not lock but we are from NY and decided to leave the paranoia behind. We had to rent a lock for safe...30.00 for 6 days, my first having to pay for this feature. The fridge was stocked with water and a couple of beers and soda daily. The room we were in could use some renovations but it was clean and we were comfortable. If you are not stuck on luxury..this is adequate. The bathroom was roomy and the two robes were really appreciated. The water was hot and that was also appreciated. The air conditioning was cold and at times we had to turn it off and the ceiling fan was sufficient. The pool was lovely and overall clean. You do have to "claim" poolside lounge chairs at the crack of dawn as guests place their towels on the chairs and hold them hostage without using them for hours at a time. This might be better regulated by staff. The music played poolside was one tape/CD/soundtrack that played daily until pool closed at 6pm. I mean the same songs over and over. Those who are not Spanish speaking will leave the resort knowing the music by heart. My biggest complaint was the HARD SELL for the vacation club. Our concierge at Building 11 was passively aggressive to us his "familia" until we did not show for the special breakfast. We relented and agreed after telling him over and over we did not want to participate in any selling pitches. Our dinner reservation that night was coincidentally screwed up. Not bueno but as i said, overall a positive experience. Will we go back to that resort? Probably not.

Cannot Recommend

I always try to provide a balanced review. So, almost 100% of staff were incredibly friendly & helpful. I couldn't be more please with most of them. I know many folks dislike resort food; while we were the food was tasty varied, fresh, & more than adequate. Staff were always cleaning, raking the pools, The activities were a little cheesy but isn't that part of resort fun? Upon arrival we weren't greeted & the desk staff was quite rude. We weren't given a room where we asked. Our room leaked (I'm not talking a drip now & then, it was fast dripping) thus flooding the entry & bathroom. Our toilet did not flush so we couldn't use the bathroom. It took 3 days of me begging before a worker came late at night & spent 2 hours "fixing" the leak. The next morning we had an even bigger leak, up to 2 inches of water on the floor, water pouring from the ceiling & an overflowing, stinking toilet. It took me another 3 hours of advocating, even demanding a different resort for our last day & a half, before we were finally moved to a room without water on the floor & gushing from the ceiling & a working toilet. That room had one, used towel which was never changed for the remainder of our stay. We love our visits to the Caribbean but will never stay at an Occidental again.
