Worst all inclusive I have ever stayed
Please read*** We are a mid 30's couple who stayed at occidental in august. We have been to many all inclusive resorts and by far this is the worst one we have ever stayed at. I wont put down the food or drinks here but the service and rooms were horrific. We were ready to come back after the 2nd day. Major issues are the room and lack of customer service to fix the issues. We are pretty laid back people but this resort really got to us. The good: Food and the pools are nice. The bad -everything else.We arrive and they gave us a room which looked like it was never cleaned and had the worst smell. We know from trvaleing before that there is a moist smell in room but this was pure mold. We asked for a room change which they ok'd so they drove me around to 4 different rooms. Each one geetting worse than the other. One floor was covered in water . So finally the guy at the desk said I can upgrade to an oceanview for half price. So we okd it,but it was the worst mistake ever. It was worst than our original room. Mold everywhere in plain sight, the fridge did not work, the a/c shut off and took a day to fix, our bathroom roof fell down on the 4th day and poor water from the upstair everywhere in our room, we called and said it was an emergency , they came 3 hrs later and plugged it up and the next day it did the same thing , the poor maid had to keep coming in and mopping for us and then she just gave us a hefty supply of bath towels to clean it up. We callled and called no one ever came. The bathroom had mold and the bathub had rust all over it. see pics below. I am warning you not to go there even thought the price seems nice.I have never had an experience like this. We felt like we got our vacation stolen from us an we waited all year for this.
Only after hours of pleading and becoming ill from the broken a/c in our 1st room we were moved to 25-215.
Unfortunately, that moved cost me $650.00, I left my Iphone in the 1st room (broken a/c) trying to get out of there so quickly. I never use my phone on international trips due to expense, but, did check a text message from my mother, while, attempting to go to bed in the overheated room= I know the phone was in the bed-last place we were before room change.
I returned to the housekeeper who was there cleaning a nearby room with her supervisor to advise them of my dilemma, since, whomever cleaned the room had the phone. They both said no, in a tone as if I was bothering them, I was polite they were almost rude. The 8am concierge at the 24 bldg further advised me that I would “not be lucky enough to get a phone back”. I take trips every 3 months and I have never been unlucky enough to have possessions lost or stolen. I then sought help from concierge, front desk, guest services, security and again no help. It’s sad my phone was not returned by housekeeping, it’s even sadder no apology, no incident report, nor a follow up call back out of 7 employees.
After finally giving up after 2days of no customer service and not wanting to further ruin my husband’s birthday. We went out on the resort for drinks- all watered down.
I have done all inclusive at Princess Resorts in Riviera Maya- the service, drinks and amenities are 100x better. Needless to say I will not return and will tell all I know about my experience as they ask in excitement “how was the Dominican?”
False advertised all inclusive - horseback riding, we asked and guest services advised there was none.
ATM broken, WIFI charge, in room safe charge, in room fridge warm, white towels almost brown, a dingy robe you would not want to put on, store on the resort charge $16.00 US dollars for a can of off insect repellent, spa services uses 1.00 store products for $65.00 facial.
Romance package we upgraded to- was a job in itself. Advertised in room massage was not in room, romantic dinner we did not get because it’s only offered on Sat and Tues.
Only plus was the beach (that’s nature) and pools. All else need intense overhaul at best starting with customer service!

Someone should teach a CUSTOMER SERVICE class.....
We had to be switched to this resort after we changed from one in Puerto Plato due to the airport we flew into. No one made us aware of the distance between Punta Cana and Puerto Plato, so the emergency agent was happy to help us find another resort and we paid the difference to be relocated. The resort was amazing but if you are American, the language barrier presents a HUGE problem and the level of customer service is not even comparable to what you would get here in the USA. They act as if they are assisting a relative and it's not big deal and they can take their time or talk on their cell phones before assisting you (which someone at the front desk did do), so get ready for that!
Initially we believed that this resort was wonderful, however after comparing it to other resorts we found it to be only average at best. Based on its price point, we do believe we received our "moneys worth". There are superior resorts in the Dominican Republic and the old saying, you get what you pay for is quite appropriate in this case. We were NOT dissatisfied, we just questioned ourselves, should we have spent more money for a nicer resort from the start ? The people we must say were FANTASTIC in all three resorts we visited on a 11 day stay in this Island nation.

Does this place have a swim up bar?11 answers
1 year, 23 months ago
Upon looking at the resort's website http://www.occidentalhotels.com/grand/PuntaCana.asp, it appears that they do have a swim up bar.
absolutely and there were lots of people there
yes it does.
Yes, in the main activities pool there is a swim up bar! Henry, the barkeep, is fabulous!
yes it does with a water fall that goes behind you when sitting at the bar!! Pool water was nice and warm as well.
yes in the main pool
Yes it does. The drinks i got were very bad however, not like other resorts.
a bar is at the pool... 2 story. The upper has hamburgers as well as refreshments. I think the bottom serves drinks to those in the pool. As I am not a drinker, I did not use this, but am pretty sure that is what if was for. The pool, however, closed at 7PM!! bummer.
Yes. And the bartender was so cool there!
Is topless sunbathing allowed at this resort?11 answers
Any nude or topless sunbathing allowed at this resort or beach?
1 year, 14 months ago
All resorts which are family-friendly usually do not allow topless bathing as there are children on the property.
I didn't see any topless sunbathing when I was there 2 weeks ago. Just the ones laying on their stomachs with the tops undone. I'm not sure if they actually don't allow it though -- maybe no one wanted to try. There was some flashing one out of control day by the swim up bar though.
It must be allowed, or not enforced if it is not allowed because we saw quite a few topless ladies walking the beaches. Since it was our honeymoon and we were kidless, we didn't care, but others with children certainly would.
We did not see nude bathing, but saw several instances of topless bathing on the beach.
Topless sunbathing was allowed and occured at the beach.
some elderly women were topless
There were a few topless sunbathers at the resort and the one next to it. Lots of Europeans who don't think about topless sunbathing as American's do.
topless sunbathing is allowed
didn't see any topless at the resort but on the beach.
Not sure about nude, but topless is
How is night life?4 answers
1 year, 12 months ago
The resort showcases live, nightly entertainment in the open-air amphitheater. Several times a week, the resort's exclusive orchestra, the Occidental Fun Club Band, performs live music for audiences of all ages. The hotel also offers merengue dance classes.
Night life at the Occidental Grand was quite good.
there is none. the "disco" is being renovated til Feb
It's alright - on the resort there is a club called Mungo, that is packed every night, alot of the locals come here. The music was pop on Saturday and then they play tons of salsa, etc. It's free if your on the Occidental Resort, but have to pay for drinks (they offer all the top shelf liquors). Also, they have a package to this club called Imagen - it's inside of a club for $60 per person. Ridiculous...since we can party for free on the resort and cheaper in the states. Downer is that your shuttled there by a bus and if you don't like it and want to leave..you have to take a taxi back to your resort since the tour bus doesn't pick you back up till 3am.
How far is the closest Casino and do you provide transportation?3 answers
12 months ago
There is a a mini casino in the lobby featuring slot machines. The resort does not advertise free transportation to the local Casinos.
There is a small casino inside the hotel and I would say approximately a 5-8 drive to the big casino down the road. I dont think the hotel provides transportation but I didn't ask.
A few people within our party of 13 went to the Hard Rock Cafe Resort to play at their casino. I believe there was a fee for non guest and $30 or $40 USD round trip fare.
The make shift casino on the premises was small and consist of old slot machines. The casino was always closed.
Are all drinks included in the all inclusive package?10 answers
10 months ago
This resort includes both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages in their all inclusive package; however, specific brands may not be available or included. We recommend checking with the staff when you order for your options.
Yes, but not the top shelf liquors.
All of the drinks are included but it is extreme bottom shelf and the drinks are terrible. They only have one kind of beer.
all drinks are included
Yes, ALL drinks are included in the package price.
YES ALL DRINKS INCLUDED
Yes all drinks are included...understand if you have any particular liquors you prefer in the states..you SOL for it's all local liquor...they have a small section on the beach for CLUB MEMBERS and only they get the top shelf alcohols.
But hey it was cool...unlimited alcohol can't beat it
Is the hotel very spread out? We have trouble walking.10 answers
10 months ago
We can always request that your room be on a lower floor and in a central location, but we cannot guarantee this. This is one of our larger resorts and they do not offer shuttle service around the property.
somewhat but they had tons of golf carts constanty driving around giving rides
yes it is very spread out. The hotel is not very well handicap accessible. I also have dificulty walking. Make sure you are on the first floor. The specialty restaurants were up a lot of stairs so I was unable to go for dinner. the buffet was also enjoyable and the food was very good. you can call a bellboy to drive you to the beach because it is to far to walk.
No problem getting to where we wanted to go.
I had a broken foot and they gave us first floor, and they drive you to the beach and back in golf carts if you have trouble walking...we picked this resort becaus eit would be much easier to get around ..
very spread out and very large resort
Yes very large resort amd very spread out. 5 plus minute walk from beaxh to hotel lobby. Same with the rooms to the lobby, and food options.
The resort is rather large and does cover quite an area. Most of the restaurants are located near the front of the resort near the front desk area. There are some other places to eat (more relaxed) around the pool and beach area.
It is very spread out. If you have trouble walking try to find a smaller place
Not really...you are maybe walking 2-3 minutes to each spot..but everything is on the resort
Is there a casino with table games nearby the Occidental Grand Punta Cana, within walking distance?3 answers
Blackjack, baccarat, craps, etc.

The casino in the lobby is only for slots and video poker.
Not at all!
Are the safe in rooms for additional charge or included?10 answers
8 months ago
According to the list of amenities, there is a dollar sign ($) next to safety deposit box to reflect that there is an additional charge for use of that service. For specific questions such as the safety deposit box charge, we do recommend contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist. The link to the resort's website to contact them directly is http://www.occidentalhotels.com/occidental/ContactUs.asp.
They are an additional charge of $25, so is wiereless internet!
They are available for an additional charge. We paid $25 for a week
The safe in the room is at an additional charge, but I do not know how much as I did not use it. Sorry.
The safe does have a fee, I believe it is $4 per day.
They are included. But their is a key deposit
Safes are provided in Rooms. Rate was about $3 per day.
Yes....4 dollars a day or $25 (5 days)...ripoff!
There are safes within rooms but at a cost. Don't expect modern safes with computize pin code. They will install a lock and key system on the safe and give you one key. They hold onto the second key.
How far to town?5 answers
How far is this resort to town? In addition to tours, I like to step out on my own and experience the culture of each place I visit. Price for taxi each way? Is there nightlife in town?
This resort is located 20 min from the airport on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, in the center of the famous Playa Bavaro area.
Depends what your looking for but 20 minutes top from the air port and 5 minute walk to a couple a fun bars and shops not sure what all the shops have to offer pretty sure the basics
The resort is walking distance from town! Very safe place to walk. taxi are approximately 20us dollars each way. Nightlife is very very active. A lot of concert with famous singers
Outside of the resort maybe 10 minutes are some local stores, your not going to get much for everything since your American (as I am) is a hustle from the taxi, to the food, to the entertainment and I went off the resort everyday for 4 days.
Taxi was roughly $10-20 bucks each way
And they have a club on the resort "Mungo" which is a top club and alot of the locals come here so it's packed every night. There is another club "Imagen" which is in a club. The CC representative came the next day and this was offered to us for $60 a person...not sure if this sounds feasible to you but in DC I can get into a club for free and use $60 to drink.
The resort is located in town. Walk outside the resort and you are there but would not suggest. And if you choose to venture off the resort, please do so during the day.
There is a club located on the premises named "Mangu."
Beware... the night club is not managed by the resort although its located on the property. The club is managed by the locals. Please avoid any person wearing a white wrist band. This can save your life. If you dance with or talk to a person with a white wrist band expect to pay. The locals are able to identify what country you are from by the color of your wrist band. Too many scams!
