NicMac Experience

Sunscape Puerto Plata may be a three star resort however, the service is five star. Very clean facility, friendly staff, excellent entertainment crew.

Cheap All Around

My family decided to stay at this hotel because of the price. When we arrived the check in for regular guests was very disorganized and the process was slow. As we walked to the rooms we noticed it was extremely crowded and the reason why was because they sell day and night passes. There are a lot of locals here causing overcrowding all around the resort. The rooms appeared decent at first glance but the air conditioning stopped working along with the mini fridge. We had to request it be fixed twice. Sheets are not changed and we stayed 6 days 5 nights. The food at the restaurants did not taste great and we ended up going to the buffet every night after the restaurants. If you need currency exchange make sure to get it before you get here as they never have any change. Loud music at all hours of the night. Local liquor at the bars, no international liquors. We will not be coming back.

Dont waste your money

First, I want to say I have booked several vacations through Cheap Caribbean and I have always been pleased. However, this is not the case with this vacation. Hotel- WASTE! 1st room had such a foul odor, the staff tried to tell me its fine just continually spray air freshener. The 2nd room had Mold & Mildew which they tried to cover up with paint but made it extremely hard for me to breathe (I have asthma). Bed, pillows, sheets, and towels were hard/scratchy. There was a leak coming from the light fixture in the shower (very dangerous) and the AC unit went from nothing to freezing (had to order several blankets, which took over an hour to get). After several days of requesting the leak in the light be fixed since I was forced to take a shower in the dark for safety reasons, I was moved to "VIP". There was nothing VIP about it. The VIP rooms are standard resort rooms at best in my opinion. The pool closes at 6:30pm everyday (its still daylight out, we are on VACATION!!!). The pool bar and the bars in general need a lesson in customer service to say the least and the alcohol I'm convinced was the cheapest they could find. This is the first all inclusive vacation that I drank water throughout my time. The beach would have been beautiful if the staff did something to control the amount of solicitation that occurs. I understand that is to be expected (souvenirs, hair styling, etc) but I could not close my eyes for longer than 1 minute. The food was ok at best. I thought maybe it was just my experience but while speaking to others at the restaurants, pool, beach, and airport the consensus was clear....don't waste your money. I do want to mention there were a few staff members that tried their best to overcompensate for the lack of service....Maria (Kids club), Yurison, Julio and Carlos.

Complete and utter disappointment

It is with complete and utter disgust that I write this review. I have been a Cheap Caribbean member for over nine years and have never experienced a vacation quite like this. From the moment we arrived at this two (2) star resort, it was one thing after the next. Imagine arriving at your resort to be hounded almost immediately into purchasing time share. Yes, timeshare. The resort itself is in desperate need of a renovation, from the parking lot right down to the rooms. After maneuvering my family and our luggage to our rooms, we were greeted with no working air conditioning, a broken refrigerator and a 30 minute wait for maintenance. Upon the arrival of maintenance we then waited another 30 minutes in a sweltering hot and humid room for maintenance and his 2 assistaknts to remove the thermostat on the wall and play with wires, which only ended up working at sub par capacity. Welcome to what we thought would be our piece of heaven we worked so hard for all year. On to dinner because yes by the time maintenance completed the task of replacing the refrigerator and trying to fix the AC, it was time for dinner. Surprise, surprise. Of the three, yes three restaurants on the property, they alternate days open so there is only really one option available daily, to which your food choices are limited. There is an outdoor pizza place that is open daily, but again, I didn't travel to the Caribbean to have pizza. The only buffet restaurant that is open daily is a far cry from fine dining. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are the same every day of the week. And let's not forget the day our bathroom ceiling caved in from the condensation of the worthless air conditioner. Wifi which of course is an extra fee did not work once you left the lobby area. Be weary, very weary of trips that sound to go to be true!!

What's to Love

Feeling like royalty during the red carpet check-in while you nosh on frosty welcome treats.

Stress-busting spa with a delicious menu of pampering, you-spoiling treatments.

The golden sands of Playa Dorado that are calling your name.

The indoor theatre that offers up some booty-shaking nighttime entertainment. Woot!

Tons of activities for the kiddos, which means more chillaxin' time for you.

The Teleferico Cable Car - the only funicular in the Caribbean.

What We'd Change

A la carte dining can fill up at night, so you might have to wait a bit. Good thing you can grab a cocktail or two while you wait to be served.

Why You Should Go

Just 20 minutes from the airport so getting to the resort is a breeze.

27 Damajagua Cascades are near - 27 natural river pools and waterfalls - and there's may be an extra cost, but it's so worth it.

The Sun Club, a family-centric program that features upgraded everything.

A golf course designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones surrounds the resort. Easy to get to when it's your tee time.

The famous Malecon beach strip is full of restaurants/bars, local vendors and Fort San Felipe to visit.

You can hike and bike through lush, tropical terrain - you might even see an exotic bird or two.
