Good for the price

To keep this short & sweet, overall the resort was fine but nothing exceptional. The food was mediocre and the buffet was very repetitive but still good. The staff were nice enough, but only went out of their way to be extra friendly to the "heavy tippers". It rained 4 out of our 6 days there (which I know is beyond their control), but they had no activities planned for inclimate weather, so we were forced to spend most days very wet or in our room. Watch out for the "vacation club" sales people. One was knocking on our door at 8AM and calling repeatedly until I told him we weren't interested no less than 6 times. The grounds were very nice, but the rooms and buildings definitely require some touching up and TLC. No major problems, just loose fixtures, scratches on all of the furniture, etc. Definitely not a 4 or 5 star resort, but you get exactly what you pay for. All in all, decent for the price, but don't expect to be pampered and take comfortable shoes for all of the steps.

A Beautiful Resort, with a few catches

Cofresi Palm Beach is part of a larger complex that belongs to the Lifestyle Holidays family of resorts. For those who are unfamiliar, Lifestyles is a "membership-based" group, similar to a timeshare. Cofresi is a beautiful, sprawling resort, but does have many areas that are accessible only to "VIP" members. Booking through Cheap Caribbean, we were automatically upgraded to VIP status. However, they did pressure us into attending a "membership" pitch, similar to a timeshare pitch, which was unexpected and time consuming (something I did not appreciate since were were only there for 5 short nights). I was able to extricate myself in about 1 hour, but some poor souls were stuck there for 3 to 4 hours, subject to high-pressure sales tactics. Heads-up...should you refuse to purchase a membership, the resort "hosts" are a bit less accommodating, and the sales people can be downright rude once they know you are not going to buy. All that being said, we still had a very nice time. We were blessed with excellent weather right up until our last day, which helped, since there is not much to do there if it rains. Winter is their rainy season, and it can rain for day-long stretches, so beware. THE ROOMS We were upgraded to a junior suite, which was wonderful. It was extremely roomy, with marble floors throughout and a balcony that overlooked the oceanfront pool and El Pilon restaurant. The air conditioning worked extremely well, and there was always plenty of hot water. We had a mini-fridge that was stocked with a few sodas and beer. Fresh bottled water was always provided, and there was a water cooler right outside our room. The bathroom had a large shower and a jetted tub, and they provided an abundance of toiletries and towels. The room was cleaned daily and the cleaning person never intruded on our privacy or gave us any reason to feel our stuff was not safe. We did have one issue with our electronic key gizmo not working, which took some time to get fixed, but luckily, we had adjoining rooms with my son, so we were never without access. THE RESORT The resort is built into a mountain, which makes for some stunning vistas, but also does require a lot of walking up and down hills and steps. They offer a shuttle to take guests around the property, though, and golf carts are also available for VIP members. There are plenty of opportunities to get wet with a variety of large pools, some with waterfalls, and one designed especially for kids. There are three swim up bars, one of which is inside a cave-grotto, which I found very intriguing. Some of the pools are better kept than others but with so much tropical foliage around, it is hard to keep the pools completely free of debris for long, especially when it rains. Beware, though--the pools are NOT heated, which may sound silly until you realize how cold the water gets after a rainfall. I expected the pools to have a warm, tropical feel, but they had heavy rains the week before our arrival and the water was icy cold! There is a covered area that has a couple of game tables (ping pong, air hockey, and billiards) but it is next to a sewer pipe, and every time we were there, it smelled pretty bad. There are other pools in the other adjoining resorts which we had access too, but did not use because we had enough to keep us busy at Cofresi. There is also a tennis area and basketball courts (which my daughter took advantage of) along with other activities, some of which cost extra. We were only there a short time and were content to just relax. THE BEACHES Like most beaches on the north side of the Dominican, the sand is hard packed and coarse. Cofresi sits on an inlet so the waves are relatively calm. The coast is rocky so the beach is somewhat narrow--if you're expecting wide sprawling sugar-sand beaches, then Puerto Plata is not the place you want. If you are looking forward to a swim in the ocean, be aware that the water is not crystal clear, but is a bit muddy, with a lot of seaweed. It was also much cooler than I expected because of the time of year. To be fair, though, because of its location, Puerto Plata is not really known for it's beaches. The main beach at Cofresi (which sits above the water) has a few cabana beds, and a couple of hammocks, and tends to get crowded very quickly. We had access to one of the VIP beaches (there are several), which had a lot more cabana beds (some swinging, some done treehouse style) as well as jacuzzis (which were bubbly but not hot). Frankly, we would have been disappointed if we didn't have access to the VIP beach since the general beach was so crowded with limited space. Beware also that the access to the water is "guarded" by friendly merchants who try to sell you banana boat rides, spa packages, and such. It got a little tiresome fending them off after a few days every time we wanted to walk down to the surf. THE RESTAURANTS When you first arrive at Cofresi, if you want to eat at any of the restaurants except the buffet, you need to make reservations. There is also a dress code, requiring long pants and close-toed shoes for men, and no bathing suits for women. Reservations fill up very fast. As a VIP, we were guaranteed two reservations, and those who are not VIP kind of get whatever is left over after all the VIP guests have been taken care of. There are two main buffets that we frequented as the only dining options that didn't require reservations. The food was okay there and even my fussy vegetarian daughter was always able to find something to eat. I highly recommend the Indian restaurant (Moomtaz) and the Brazilian restaurant (Rodizio). The wine flows freely at the restaurants, but for some reason, no mixed drinks were available during meals. There are also some restaurants that are VIP members only. We sampled pretty much all the bars as well, and they will mix up the standard drinks, served in little plastic cups. However, on the VIP beach, they offer premium drinks served in fancier ware, and served directly to you at your cabana, if you so choose. They also offer a snack menu with cabana-side service, and a sushi bar (serving sushi rolls only) overlooking the ocean. As you might imagine we spent a lot of time at the VIP beach. A word of caution if you are a late sleeper. We could not get anything to eat between the hours of 10:30 and noon, when the shift changes from breakfast to lunch, so plan accordingly. The buffet offers a late night menu served from 11:00 to 5:00 a.m., I think, for late night partiers. SPECIAL EVENTS We attended the Thursday night welcome party at the Dome in Ocean World. It was a very nice venue, by a pool overlooking the ocean, and offered premium drinks and dance music. They also had a singer do a few songs followed by a preview of the Bravissimo show. Guests were then told to go inside to a theater to watch the full Bravissimo show. However, they were told in Spanish, and we didn't understand, so by the time we figured out where everyone went, there were no seats in the theater (which was very crowded and hot), so we just left. Be advised that Bravissimo is an ornate dance show of very scantily clad women which some might find a little too risque for younger guests. We also attended the Sunday Night VIP Beach Party, which was really very good. It was on a private beach area (not on the sand, on a large patio/veranda) and transportation was provided. They pulled out all the stops with the food and by Dominican standards the buffet was beyond extravagant. Again premium drinks flowed freely. The show they put on was pretty impressive, and then a band played dance music followed by fireworks and ending with a "foam dance party" (which we skipped, but which I heard was pretty wild). Of course, interspersed with the entertainment was a video "commercial" for Lifestyle membership. The only problem we had was, at the end, trying to get back to the buses was a madhouse. It started to rain, and there was only one narrow (like, 3 foot) covered "cave-like" walkway getting to the buses. Some of the workers and more than a few guests who walking back to their respective places, tried to push through the crowd waiting for the shuttles, causing a near riot. No security or other assistance was provided, and it almost became a disaster, with people (most of whom were drunk) yelling, pushing and shoving each other. Not a pretty ending to what was otherwise a very fun night. There was other entertainment (a Michael Jackson show and a Magic show) which we didn't attend. THE STAFF Overall, the staff was friendly and accommodating, spoke English, and didn't laugh at us when we tried to speak Spanish. Once in awhile, you'd run into the guy or gal who was having a bad day, but for the most part, the staff always had a smile and a friendly word and seemed eager to help. Overall we had an excellent time, with only a minor bump here and there. However, I don't think the experience would have been as enjoyable if we weren't VIP guests, if our room hadn't been upgraded, or if the weather hadn't been as beautiful as it was. Just make sure you know what you're getting into with regard to the quality of the beaches and the promotional aspects of the resort.

good trip

good trip. Would definitely go back again. Only complaint is that once breakfast is over. There is no place for lunch, which means after 10;30 you don't eat again until dinner. If there was a place for lunch or snacks I did not know about it. Otherwise wonderful resort,
