"I truly liked Barcelo Puerto Plata. The location was great as well as rooms. I only used the buffet to enjoy my meals, but that was amazing!" – Sippe

Not a picky person but

Place is dated but clean. Has the best beach in the DM and we go to a lot of DM resorts. Pool area and swimp bar and bar tenders really great. All the service people are very good. The big problem was the food. We loved the place but the food was so bad we won't go back. We don't normally give a rewiew like this but to be fair we had to

Worst all inclusive I ever been to.

I was completely disappointed by this hotel. It started with the check-in, which took 1.5 hours and continued throughout the trip. The room was outdated and inferior to any other hotel I've ever stayed in. The staff was aloof and unfriendly, the pool packed with people all day long, and the dining options were very poor. The kids club was non- existent, and the nightly entertainment fair at best. Extremely disappointing for my first visit to Dominican Republic!

Good resort for the money

The beach and pool were extremely clean and beautiful. We were only able to try two of the restaurants when we were there due to being away from the resort during the times allowed to make a reservation. We were pleased with the buffet for all 3 meals. The Japanese and Brazilian restaurants were ok, but nothing special. The beds were like a rock an that would be my only true complaint about the resort. Everything else was great!

decent budget trip for one

Spent the last 7 days at Barceló Puerto Plata. The hotel was slammed crazy busy on Friday when I arrived at least 300 people were all trying to check in at the same time. I had 'upgraded' to the Club Superior so I got to skip the hours and hours wait. That made the upgrade worth the money. The room was comfortable and pleasant. It had the only consistent air conditioning in the whole place. During the Friday-Sunday times there were multiple power outages due to over use. If you really like your shampoo/conditioner/shower gel/washcloth bring them-they do offer shampoo/conditioner but it is not a foaming experience and leaves much to be desired. Same with body lotion. The bed was springy, but manageable. The overall general feel was one of a budget experience. The buffet had a generous amount of food. There was much of it repeated daily with a few special items that changed like the type of fish they offered. Otherwise it was the same. Only a few of the special restaurants were open while I was there. The seafood restaurant on the beach, the pizza place, the Brazilian steakhouse, and the Italian location. I am allergic to seafood so I never dealt with them. The pizza location was a full size plate of pizza of your choice. It was edible, but not amazing. It was an open air experience. The Brazilian Steak house was nice. You do not get to chose what you would like to have, you get it all. It was a decent experience but again it was not anything that was outstanding. The Italian restaurant was my favorite and had the best quality in my estimation. The beach was nice early in the morning. The wind picks up after about 10 and so do the vendors. The people attempting to sell you items gets annoying quick, but they take no and go away. However 10 minutes later a new one comes around again. Not a bad way to spend a morning if you can deal with the sand and people. The main pools smelled like Urine. During the main week Monday-Thursday they are mostly empty like the rest of the place. However on Friday they welcome in the locals who spend the weekend at the resort and let their children run loose and free. Not a great place to be if you want peace and quite. The kids did not get out of the pool much at all which is most likely why it smelled like Urine. There were no adult only pools which was a slight irritation for me since I was seeking solitude. The VIP area was nice to eat at-there were upgrades that you could not get at the buffet like Bacon. Also you got to make reservations easier. Over all experience is one of a decent budget experience. No I would not return simply because I desire a more kid-free environment, a private beach and a higher class of experience. No regrets, no issues, not any problems. The staff was friendly and made a sincere effort to be accommodating and kind. Cheap Caribbean was available at all times and made an effort to ensure I was aware that I had a full support team waiting in the wings should I need them for anything!

What's to Love

The food at the Barcelo Puerto Plata Resort buffets was above and beyond what we expected! Lots of vegetarian-friendly options, too!

What We'd Change

The decor in a few of the rooms could be a little more modern.

Hotel Description

Barcelo Puerto Plata: Make Your Dream Vacation a Reality in This Caribbean Paradise

When you fantasize about your dream Caribbean vacation, chances are sparkling waters and sandy beaches are in the picture. Barcelo Puerto Plata has tropical beauty thanks to its unique island, home to lush valleys and regal mountains. Situated on Playa Dorada and surrounded by an 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Barcelo Puerto Plata, an all-inclusive resort, features two swimming pools, eight restaurants and nightly entertainment. Picture yourself dog paddling to the swim-up bar for a refreshing drink, then spending the afternoon under the shade of a thatched roof.

If you're athletic, challenge fellow guests to a game of doubles at one of Barcelo Puerto Plata's two tennis courts. You could join a game of beach volleyball or mini golf. Amp it up a notch with snorkeling, sea kayaking, diving and windsurfing to make your vacation an island adventure. Adrenaline-pumping fun works up an appetite for Brazilian fare at Rodizio or Mexican entrees at Mexico Lindo Restaurant. Don't forget merengue class, where you can perfect your moves to wow the locals at Bar Disco Playa, the nightclub on the beach.

Organized kids' activities throughout the day and a children's swimming pool make the Barcelo Puerto Plata all inclusive packages ideal for families. After a full day making family memories, the hotel's helpful staff can set you up with a sitter for the little ones. For the older kids, there's a mini disco each night in the hotel's theater from 10pm-11pm. Mom and Dad, freed up for the evening, can enjoy a leisurely dinner at La Dolce Vita, then indulge with strawberry daiquiris at La Bodega.

With its idyllic setting, Barcelo Puerto Plata is the perfect destination for couples, as well. Imagine you and your sweetie on a private balcony, watching the sun set as the waves roll in. The romantic atmosphere makes it no surprise that the resort is a popular wedding venue, offering a variety of packages to manage all the details. Of course, Barcelo Puerto Plato's sultry appeal makes it popular with the honeymooners, too.
