Value vacation

We had a good week at Cozumeleno. The resort is a good value option, but is definitely not a luxury resort. Pros: The property is lovely, clean, and well maintained. The pools and beach were great, with nice poolside/beach service. The rooms were large and very clean. The staff were very nice, friendly, and helpful. Family friendly, not a lot of obnoxious drunks or loud late-night partying. Cons: The food is mediocre and by the 3rd day was not appealing at all (breakfast was always fine, especially with the egg/bacon grill). The bed was very hard, and the rooms could use some updating (think cheap Caribbean decor, charming but not comfortable). You are only provided one bottle of water per room, we rented the minifridge and had no issues after that (worth the extra cash). The drinks were watered down, but ask for doubles and triples and you should be fine (tipping helps!). The spa is independent of the resort, they were very nice and attentive, but my mani/pedi took 2.5 hrs and only lasted 1 day. The beach/pool chairs were fully reserved every day by 8am. The music at pool and in the buffet was odd: medleys, dance mixes of popular songs, and trance !?!? Finally, by the end of the week we were desperate to cut off our arm bands, it turns out they are very annoying. Activities: the snorkeling was nice, we rented jet skis and had fun, Zach at the scuba shop was knowledgeable and a good teacher for my discover scuba, we rented a car and went to Punta Del Sur (crocodiles :)), drove around the island (!), and had an amazing lunch at Sr. Iguanas. Shopping downtown was fun (be sure to haggle), we picked up snacks and beer at the Mega, and we had a lovely last dinner at Pepe's downtown. Bottom line: you get what you pay for....it turns out I want better food and a more luxurious room, so next time we will probably stay somewhere else, but NOTHING about our stay was bad or negative. All in all it was a good vacation.

Just ok

Just back from a week at El Cozumeleno beach resort. The resort itself is very pretty, and the staff is constantly working to keep it that way. We were in the older building and were given an "upgrade" to an ocean view room. Only problem was it was on the 6th floor and the one elevator only goes up to the fifth. The room itself was very dated and needed some work. There was an outlet coming out of the wall and a door knob falling off of the bathroom door. Also, the toilet did not flush very well and the a/c unit was extremely loud. Brought this to the attention of the front desk twice but it wAs never fixed. As far as the food, the buffet was not the best. Same food every day, without any changes, and only lukewarm at best. Was hoping for a little better like at other AI resorts we've been to. (Theme nights, etc). The veranda restaurant served a nice meal though. Would go back to Cozumel in a heartbeat, but would look at other resorts before staying here again.

Great trip

I read all the reviews before I booked this so I knew what to look for and consequently know how to write a review that will actually be helpful. Biggest nock is that beds and pillows are hard but tolerable. I'm 46 and I was ok. Hamburgers and hot dogs were not good. If you want a chair or 2 at the beach you have to save it early (people use towels, books, shoes, dirty laundry to save their chairs) I didn't like that but when in Rome........ Great snorkeling at the resort. Room and bathroom were huge. (I was on 3rd floor) $16 cab ride to resort from airport. $8 cab ride to Coz. From resort. At the airport when I got off the plane they offered to rent me a car for $50 for the entire week; he started at $100. I could have negotiated a better deal. But since I'm unfamiliar with how insurance works over there I didn't get one. But I saw several folks with cars. If you know your insurance covers you or you are familiar with how that works you might want to get a car. I'd loved to had one but just wasn't comfortable enough to do it. Take your own snorkel equip or rent theirs for $10 per day. (1st hr is free) Don't buy anything at resort (sunscreen, tooth paste, razors, etc. Buy that stuff in town for less than half resort price). (Sunscreen $30 at resort) All the reviews that mention resort is out of date, needs modernizing, etc. This is true but no big deal. For example, you actually have a key to unlock your door instead of a card that won't work because it got wet or got too close to your cell phone. I've done a lot of cruising. Resort food is about the same; maybe a little better (I got into seafood 3x; cruise is typically lobster night only). Resort has a hot grill going all the time for omelets and beef/chicken burritos that are outstanding. I probly ate 40 tortillas in a week. Drinks made with tequila are excellent, rum are ok, bourbon is horrible. But you can go to town and buy your own mixings. Be sure and take your own big cup, saves trips to the bar. (I had mine but I wasn't alone) Hard to beat this resort for the money. I'd go again and take my kids.

I'd go back

Buffet isn't great but you can ask for a menu and order off that. The chicken wings are fabulous, ribs are good. Ask for bacon and sausage as it's not sitting out for grabs, pico too. If you tip the hard working staff you will get great service, they will bring you food and drinks to the beach and pool, unheard of for a 3 star resort. Activity staff is not crazy, fun, motivated people, more laid back. Cozumel is a laid back place, don't plan on partying at night, bedtime by about 9pm. Tuesdays and Fridays they have a live band which was great!! We did not pay for ocean view but received a HUGE ocean view room that slept 6, that was fantastic. We paid very little and I thought it was a real deal. The pools are good, the hot tubs are lukewarm at best and the width of the beach is very narrow and rocky but there are some sandy areas and the snorkeling is great! Don't expect a 4 or 5 star resort but for a budget resort I had a great time and would go back. Get the chicken wings!!!!

Located in the northern Hotel Zone of Isla Cozumel, just five minutes from downtown San Miguel, this family-friendly home away from home faces the clear blue waters of the Caribbean against sands so white it's tough to spot seashells.

If pirate ships are more to your liking, swab the deck of a rental sailboat, take a sunset cruise, or schedule a deep-sea fishing charter, all from one location right in front of the resort.

The landlubbers in your crew can lounge on the sands of the serene beach, hang out on the resort's pier or opt for the three-level, free-form activities pool that includes a jetted section and swim-up bar. Grab something to munch at the poolside snack bar, and then relax under the highest tier behind a waterfall or in the 10-person hot tub. If you need a more Zen-like experience, grab a spot by the "quiet" pool, while the munchkins indulge in the mushroom-shaped shower located in the children's wading pool.

On your way back to the hotel, drop your offspring off at the all inclusive kid's club before taking in 18 holes of golf at Cozumel Country Club right across the street. Designed by the Nicklaus Group, the course is not only environmentally friendly, but offers a challenge for everyone from beginners to experienced players. Gather everyone for an early evening meal at the open-air El Cocal then enjoy live entertainment available three nights a week produced by your friendly and courteous staff.
