Today, my husband and I are leaving the resort, and we aren't too sad to be leaving. As much as we loved the area and people, we were disappointed particularly with the food. Like you, I read over plenty of reviews and even though I was warned, we decided to go with the RIU Guanacaste. Before I speak negatively, I would like to say that I believe you get what you pay for. For less than a thousand dollars a person, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Overall, our trip was okay, and while it wasn't a disaster, I wouldn't come to this resort. We do love the area and Costa Rica in general. Pros: The staff were friendly. Our room had a good view. The swim up bar and drinks were good. We particularly loved the mudslides and mojitos. The coffee is delicious! The resort itself is well maintained. People are constantly cleaning, shaping up the gardens, etc. The beach vendors are fairly priced and offer lots of activities. We went horseback riding and saw monkeys for $30. I had a wonderful massage for an hour, $39 as well. We also enjoyed going to Coco Beach ($15 water taxi round trip) to get out of the resort. Cons: The food. I read online that the Italian place had better steak than the steakhouse, so our first night we went for the Italian restaurant. It was okay. Nothing special. The other restaurants weren't always available which is very misleading. I am not sure if it's because we went during the off season, but each night one or more of the four restaurants were closed. We never got to try the gourmet restaurant or steakhouse because they were closed. The hotel information sheets will tell you that a reservation is needed for the gourmet restaurant, but that's not true. We found out it's first come, first serve and they only do one seating a night. We did eat at the Asian place and found it palatable the first night. The other two nights we were forced to eat it again because the other restaurants were not open, and each night the menu didn't change and it became lesser and lesser quality. It's wrong to advertise that your establishment has four restaurants to chose from when in fact half are closed down each night at random. The activities were lackluster and seemed commercialized and general. Very B rated shows at night, meanwhile the RIU is known for world class entertainment. Overall, not worth it!

Great surprise

We have always shied from staying at big resorts and preferred small more intimate ones to get a feel of the island or country that we were at. We took a chance on this one just to see what it was like. What a great surprise as soon as we drove in the front gate. The grounds were so impressive that we knew we were in for a treat. The place is beautiful and even though it rained a lot we enjoyed it here. People and service were great. We would recommend it.

Memorable Trip

All I can say is that the Riu Guanacaste did not disappoint. First off, the resort as a whole looks beautiful! Whatever you'd envision a 5 star resort to look like, it did. The lobby was gorgeous and once your enter the resort it overlooks the beautiful beaches and clear blue skies. Our room was well maintained and maintenance and housekeeping were there to help us whenever we needed their services. In regards to food, the breakfast buffet was awesome with a wide array of choices. The lunch buffet was not bad. They had plenty to choose fun, but it was alright to me honestly. Dinner on the other hand was great! There was a buffet as well (American, Asian, Italian), plus they had specialty restaurants like a steakhouse or a fine dining restaurant. The steakhouse was top notch where they served my favorite, ribeye, while my girlfriend had a multi seafood platter. As far as entertainment, they had various performances and showcases throughout the week and bars galore. It wasn't hard to get a drink since the resort was fully staffed with bartenders ready to serve you. There was also a nightclub and casino, but we were so tired that we never got a chance to check it out lol. They also had a sports bar so I was able to watch my beloved Chicago Cubs win! Overall, this was a great resort with awesome amenities and I will never forget my stay there because not only did we have an awesome time, but, I proposed to my girlfriend on the beach, AND SHE SAID YES!!! Thank you Riu Guanacaste!!!

Great value

For the price you pay the resort is great! However, there is no wifi in the rooms so everyone is in the lobby on their mobile devices throughout the day. I personally do not mind and being in the lobby was fine with me. They offer 4 restaurants; Asian, Italian, steakhouse and gourmet and a buffet with a daily changing a menu. (International, Asian, Mexican, etc.). Reservations are not needed, but are on a first come first served basis. I absolutely love the ice cream/sorbet during dinner and the Costa Rican coffee is absolutely amazing. Try the different juices in the morning for breakfast, they’re different from the store bought ones at home. Breakfast is 7am-10am, continental breakfast is 10am-12pm, and lunch is 12pm-3pm, dinner is typically 6:15pm & 8:30pm. The Sports Bar is open 24 hours and snacks are available during the day. Every room has a mini bar and a stocked mini fridge (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) and is restocked every two days. For drinks at the bar you must have a Costa Rica & liquid marijuana. Amazing. My favorite bar in the resort is The Plaza and second is the swim up bar at the pool. Unlike its neighbor resort Riu Palace, this one has no room service, which again you may or may not care for. The beach is short walk in the rear of the resort. I think a lot of people forget that part of the “all inclusive” part of it is there are water activities that are included. Sign a waiver at the water center before anything to make things easier. They’re open from 9am-3:30/4pm or so. I got a chance to snorkel, paddleboard, and kayak. I wish I had tried windsurfing, but it didn’t look like it was set up for use. I will say the life vests they had people use wreaked of sweat and needs to be cleaned somehow. Please fix this Riu!! The bedroom was clean. The bathroom however I did notice some spots that were missed. There was a string of hair in the sink that the cleaning people forgot to remove and I have a gut feeling that the face towels were not changed before we arrived in our room. As if the last people who stayed used the same ones. The staff was very friendly and pleasant. Everyone speaks English, but please remember to tip the staff accordingly. Overall, this place was great and I enjoyed my stay.

What's to Love

The all-inclusiveness: the food, the drinks, the everything.

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

Three sparkling pools, surrounded by lush greens keep you refreshed and cool. Pool side bars quench your thirst.

The liquor dispenser in the room lets you craft your own cocktail (soda water and mixers are stocked in the fridge.)

The beach isn't crowded and the tropical background adds to its peacefulness. Find your perch.

The stunner of a view with green lush landscapes and rolling mountains off in the distance - breathtaking.

Riu knows how to put on a show and the live entertainment day and night won't disappoint.

Some great rocks nearby for snorkeling - pack your own gear if you want to make sure you get a mask.

What We'd Change

The walk from the lobby to the pool doesn't offer much shade. Luckily, the pool's swim-up bar offers quick relief with ice-cold beer.

Why You Should Go

Riu is not far from the airport in Liberia - a quick 20 minutes to your tropical oasis.

A great spot for adventure-seeking tourists with excursions like Rincon Nature Park and the Safari Park nearby.

The beachy tan sands are sometimes rocky under the water - just grab shoes to wear & you'll be set.

Laid-back Costa Rican resort with lots to experience in the area - unique foliage and wild life add to the charm.

Much-needed spa time lets you get uber relaxed - massages, steam baths, facials in tropical paradise.

Activities galore - tennis, ping pong, beach volleyball, windsurfing, kayaks, paddle boards. Game on.
