Description

Cancun embodies Caribbean splendor, with translucent turquoise waters and powdery white-sand beaches, coupled with coastal areas of great natural beauty. Cancun is also a modern Mega Resort. Even a traveler feeling apprehensive about visiting foreign soil will feel completely at ease here. English is spoken, dollars are accepted, roads are well paved, and lawns are manicured. Travelers feel comfortable in Cancun. You do not need to spend a day getting your bearings, because you immediately see familiar names for dining, shopping, nightclubbing, and sleeping. There is also the lure of ancient cultures evident in all directions and a number of ecologically oriented theme parks.

Local Information

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso. American funds are widely accepted, though we recommend buying some pesos, especially for shopping at the local markets and tips. Currency can be exchanged at casas de cambio (exchange houses), banks, and hotels, though the latter usually have the highest rates and tack on a service fee. ATMs are readily available and accept foreign bankcards. Major credit cards are widely accepted.

Airport Information

Cancun is very easy to get to, with an abundant number of flights arriving daily. American, Continental, USAirways, Delta, Alaska Airlines, and AeroMexcio offer service from nearly everywhere in the US. Only about 1 1/2 hours from Miami and four hours from Chicago and New York, Cancun has long been the destination of choice for travelers from around the world. Please be advised that many destinations charge a departure fee. Generally, most airlines include this fee in the cost of your airline ticket. We recommend you contact the airline directly to review the details with the carrier.

Entry Requirements

The U.S. Department of State and Homeland Security requires all travelers to and from Mexico to have a passport to establish the bearer's identity and nationality. Non-U.S. citizens should contact the airline they are traveling on, or their local consulate regarding the specific entry requirements that apply to their nationality.
