Not what we hoped for
Before we booked this trip, we read reviews about this resort and they were mostly positive. However, our experience from the very begining was different. First, they tried to give us ground-floor room even though we requested a room with the balcony. Second, we requested a king-size bed, but we were told they have only queen-size in rooms facing the ocean. When we entered the room, we found out there was not soap and other supplies, toilet never flushed, communication with resort staff was difficult because seldom did anyone speak english, food was mediocre and always the same (leftovers?) and shade on the beach was hard to find (the only one provided was by the trees).
Sorry, Dominicus, but we are not coming back.

Can't Beat the DR!
My husband and I have been coming to Punta Cana or La Romana for the past 5 years. We really love spending time here. This vacation we tried out the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace. We had a third floor corner room that was ocean front, however, the room height is the same as the palm trees so you could barely see the ocean at all, just the pool. Not complaining just an FYI. You can use the activities and restaurants at the Dominicus Beach and Palace which is nice, but the hotel becomes pretty spaced out.
Rooms: The rooms were fine, nothing fancy, nothing bad. They stock the refrigerators with bottled water, coke, and sprite - nothing diet. The bathroom amenities were soap, all purpose body gel, shampoo, and conditioner, and nothing more. Lots of TV channels, but make sure you get a remote control from the front desk. There is a safe which is nice to lock up your passports, etc.
Pool: The pool at the Palace was nice, but not overly large. There were some activities pool side, but not too many.
Restaurants: We enjoyed the buffets and could ususally find stuff we liked to eat. We tried all of the a la carte restaurants. The mexican was by far the best and the mediterranean was our least favorite.
Nightlife: We went to each of the shows that was put on and they were all very good. It may be italian/DR humor, but we felt a few were a little racy if you had young kids with you. The Michael Jackson tribute was well attended and standing room only! After each show they had music by the pool which was predominantly latin music. If you enjoy that you'll be in heaven. If you wanted a little Top 40 you'll be out of luck.
As others have said, this hotel caters to italian visitors. There was very little english spoken at the planned activities. Most things were in spanish and italian - with a little english, french, or german thrown in for good measure. With the exception of the reception staff who spoke fluent english.
There was no vendors bothering you on the beach, etc. which was nice. We never had a problem getting a lounge chair in the shade. The beach is a series of coves so you can't take a long walk on the beach. It's also a little rocky so no boogie boarding (boo!).
All in all, we enjoyed our 8 nights here and don't have any major complaints. We do have other places we've stayed that we liked better so although a good place, we wouldn't recommend first.

Good Value for the price!
The Buffet had good choices. Beef was not tender no matter what way it was prepared. Pasta at the buffet always had the biggest lines because it was so good. We did a specific restaurant every other night. Hurricane Irene made us miss the Mexican Restaurant which was highly recommended. Viva Cafe on the dock was so dark that we couldn't see what we were eating. The Oriental Restaurant was not rated highly, but we tried it. The sushi appetizer was the best part of the meal.
The Italian Restaurant was one our favorite's.
Drinks -- The Alcohol tasted watered down so we asked for a double dose. We took our own thermal mugs, and had them put drinks in them instead of using the 10 ounce plastic glasses that the resort served beverages in.
People -- A majority of the guests were from Italy, or Spanish speaking countries. Somtimes there was a language barrier for us Americans.
Not being able to drink water from the faucet in the hotel room was inconvenient. Chamber maids stocked the in room refrigerator every day. A daily tip guaranteed the restocking of bottled water and soda.
There were hand towels, and bath towels, but no face cloths in every room. We were told that certain Ethnic groups don't use face cloths.
All the workers seemed very nice, and did their best to make the guests happy.

Hotel Description
Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace: Dive into the Big Top
Prepare yourself for some hardcore rest and relaxation, and make your way to the all inclusive Viva Dominicus Palace in La Romana, located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. This 83,000-sq-ft resort rests on the island's most pristine, white-sand beach facing the verdant islands of Saona and Catalina.
Should diving be your bag, whether you need a beginner's lesson in the pool or were born with gills, grab a four-night, all inclusive dive package and explore the Dominican Republic, marine-mammal style. You'll find a wonderland beneath the shimmering indigo surf, as well as horse-eye jacks, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and brain coral. Wreck divers won't be able to resist the St. George, a 240-ft shipwreck resting 135 ft below the surface of the water, just off the shore of Viva Dominicus Palace.
Land activities more your style? Grab a catamaran and explore the untouched perfection of Saona or Catalina. Or take some all inclusive dance lessons with that special someone. Looking for something unique? Wander over to Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace's sister resort, next door (all restaurants and drinks here a part of your all inclusive package as well), and take a trapeze lesson. The professional, trapeze-training team offers lessons for adults in the afternoon, while the mornings are reserved for children. And if you think you won't get bragging rights for your newfound skills, a circus-themed show (every Friday) allows you to show off your big-top act to an awestruck public.
While you're basking in all that circus glory, why not do it poolside, lounging in a chair, rum punch in hand? Now that you've worked up a good appetite, visit the La Yuca Buffet for some international cuisine, including grilled local fish, with a side of exotic, fresh fruit.
Sleeping too good this morning to get out of your king-sized bed? Pull back the curtains and gaze out at the surf from your Superior Ocean Front room, while Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace serves you a continental breakfast, room-service style.
