Jonesin' for a tropical getaway, but want something out of the ordinary, too? Does an ocean-side trapeze lesson sound exotic enough? Believe it, acrobatic tricks on the beach are within reach at Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach. This hotel, situated on a beautiful stretch of soft white sand, is a circus act and seaside resort in one.

Worst trip ever
- Upon check in at Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach, we were told the hotel had been overbooked, and that they had made arrangements for us to stay at the Catalonia Grande Dominicus resort for the first two nights (Nov 23-Nov 24). We had rented a vehicle from the airport, and this meant we had to navigate ourselves to a new hotel that we had never heard of before. This made us extremely uneasy as it was not a sister resort, and it was not affiliated with a trusted well known company, such as Wyndham, Hilton, Sheraton etc. All of our planning and research on Viva Wyndham Dominicus beach was completely wasted, and we had to hope for the best.
- We checked into Hotel Catalonia Gran Dominicus resort, and we were immediately disappointed in the room provided. It was at least a seven minute walk to the beach. Catalonia has upgraded rooms, but we were put into the cheapest one available, a standard basic hotel room. At the Viva Wyndham, the villas are a quick one minute walk to the water, whether it is a pool or the ocean. This was not an equal exchange for the room we paid additional money for.
- The two nights at the Catalonia were tolerable, but it was a hassle having to pack up and move once the two nights were over. We checked in on a Wednesday night. We had the entire day at Catalonia on Thursday, but Friday morning we had to pack and try to get in touch with Viva Wyndham Dominicus to insure there was a room available for that night’s stay. We spent two hours Friday just trying to get a hold of someone at Wyndham who could assure there was room for us and our party. We were hung up on numerous times, and put on hold for long periods. Once we got someone on the phone, they assured us a taxi would come to transport our friends within the hour, and that the rooms were available.
- Once we arrived back at the Viva Wyndham resort, we had to wait in line to speak with someone at the reception desk. The attendant informed us that there were no rooms available, but that we were free to use the resort in the meantime. This process of working with the front desk staff took another hour and a half of our day. Our morning was completely wasted. We had to check our luggage, and were told to come back at 4pm to pick up our room assignments.
- We arrived back at 4pm, but were told our rooms were still not available. While we were waiting, we spoke with Jose at the front desk, and he said we would be compensated for the full vacation- a five day four nights all inclusive package at any of the Viva Wyndham resorts. We waited for another hour as he worked on our paperwork, and then said he could not provide the voucher at that time, but we were promised to receive it before we checked out of the hotel.
By 5:30 pm we finally received keys to our rooms. We were in limbo for a total of 7 hours during this moving between resorts process, unsure of whether or not we would have a place to stay for the duration of our stay.
- The villa we were assigned was with two double beds, not the King size bed we had originally reserved. We had a roof over our head, but we had to settle. It was not the vacation setting we had paid for. I was not able to share a bed with my wife; instead we had to sleep apart on two beds.
- On Saturday night, we made reservations to dine at the Steak House on property. My wife ordered the kabob dinner as her entrée. When she bit into her meal, we then realized her meat was not fully cooked. It was entirely raw (red and bloody). The waiter quickly took the plate and apologized profusely, but the total ambiance of the dinner was ruined.
- We have no desire to return to Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach. The service of the staff and the quality of the food was subpar to what we received at Catalonia resort. We do not trust that our next stay would be any different than what we received at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus resort. Management never came forth to handle the situation or to admit to their mistake. They never fulfilled their promise for compensation.
The Wyndham Dominicus Beach hotel (all inclusive) was a terrible experience. The customer service was extremely rude and unacceptable. They did not have rooms available for half the first half of our trip and we got shipped off to another resort where they put us up in the lowest quality of rooms (moldy). We had to sleep with the doors open or outside to be able to breath (seriously, we slept outside the second night there).
Once the resort finally had our rooms available, they had us come to the hotel only to find out that our rooms would still not be ready for 4 more hours. I tried to get a pillow and some bottled water from the service desk once we were finally in our rooms. Three phone calls later, over the course of 4 hours, I finally gave up. The food was ok at La Roca Grill and the Pizza Place, nothing to write home about. The food at the buffet was rather disappointing.
When reserving activities, they had you sign up on a list. This sounds logical and easy enough, but for some reason we stll had to fight for our turn even though we were sitting on the beach waiting for 2 hours. Not sure if that was because our spanish was not fluent enough, but I was able to communicate just fine with the guys earlier??? Overall, I would not recommend you go to this resort. I've stayed at $3 hostels that had a smoother running front desk and friendlier customer service. We are extremely easy going and read some of the reviews about this hotel. We never imagined that it could ever be as bad of an experience as we encountered. Their are other hotels in this area and any of them could be better. The majority of the staff is extremely rude (except for the trapeze guys) and treated their guest like pests. I some what felt better (as I spent most of my time in the front desk area waiting) to see that we were not being singled out because they treated 90% of their guests that way.
My group that I traveled with are currently awaiting a response from Cheapcaribbean.com.
If it where not for some of they employees at the bar this trip when had even been worse then anything i have been to,
the front desk personally are not friendly or helpful they talk to you like you are nothing when i am the one paying for me stay. The food was not what they say there ranking is a 4 star it should be more of a 2 star and that is even given to much.
Overall we had a great time, I read every review before I left & with mixed feelings we arrived to a beautiful resort. I packed for the bad reviews in packing washcloths, toilet paper & an alarm clock just so we were prepared for the worst.
Room:
We stayed in a beachfront bungalow it was very nice exactly like the pictures. We stayed in a room that was close to the main pool which was great because we were in the middle of everything but it was loud at night with the DJs. The rooms Do Not have Alarm Clocks, & no washcloths. But it was very clean...the mini frige was only stocked once with one beer & one soda.
Drinks:
Good variety of mixed drinks....& we loved the Presidente Beer...however they only give you 8oz glasses....go to walmart before you go & get a "BUBBA Keg" its well worth the $9
Food:
MAKE ALL YOUR RESERVATIONS THE DAY YOU ARRIVE SO YOU DONT HAVE TO EAT ALL YOUR MEALS @ THE BUFFET
This is where we had our issues....there was a decent variety on buffets but everything was very bland. The Mexican Restaurant was good with a great serving staff. The La Rocca Restaurant was terrible a glorified buffet. You got to pick beef or fish and the rest of your meal was from a buffet. The Viva Cafe was very good worth the $10 extra dollars & the open aired atmosphere was awesome. The El Palaco (italian) was the best there was an extra charge of $10 but it was great. Portions @ the sit down restaurants are a bit small but were sufficient, not sharable. We're from Pennsylvania & own a Pizza Restaurant so the pizza to us wasnt that great but it made due if we couldn't find anything else.
Staff:
All of the staff was very friendly. They always had a smile on their face. The men that were on the beach keeping it clean were the best. They were awesome, they would crack a coconut & let you drink the juice.
Language:
Like many of the reviews stated the dominant language is Spanish & Italian. Us being English speaking it was a bit hard to talk to anyone but eachother.
Beach/Pools:
We are beach people & really didnt spend anytime at or in the pools. There weren't many people at the pools however they were beautiful.
The beach was awesome...tons of chairs. There is so much coral in the water, you could walk right up to it and see all the beautiful fish swimming around.
MAKE SURE YOU TURN YOUR TOWEL IN SO YOU COULD GET A FRESH ONE EVERYDAY
Overall we had a great time, it was exactly what we expected and would return with a group of people. I wouldn't return with just 2 of us again unless we learn to speak spanish or italian.

The is not a casino within walking distance from this hotel
KellyCC
No casino. This resort is in a quite part of the country. No large cities nearby. They do have a night club.
SunFunGirl
Yes! I don't remember what they were called, but I remember driving by a few casinos on the way to the resort and many billboard advertisements for casinos nearby.

There is one about 1 mile from the Hotel. Matt, a marathoner in our party, ran passed it and said it looked really shabby and sketchy so we didn't bother. It's the only one in the area.

For the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach, in the package details it says that travel to and from the airport is not inlcuded, can someone tell me what the travel cost might be?

Arranging your transportation in advance is highly recommended! This must be done no later than 48 hour prior to arrival. Taxis are available but may not be metered. If you were to add transfers to your package from Santo Domingo airport it would be $60 per person round trip. This would be a shared vehicle and could include stops along the way. The Turinter Tours representative will help you make the best of your vacation and will assist you by providing helpful information about the hotel, surrounding areas, local customs and more.
They can also reserve optional tours and return airport transfers.
KellyCC
If you fly into the nearest airport, the Ramoma ( i think) it is about 20 minutes away. You can hire a private car online to take you to the resort. The cost was $50 each way. Our driver was waiting for us with our name on a sign. Or you can hire a cab when you get to airport for about $35 each way. Taxi's are waiting outside airport. But I would hire a driver ahead of time.
SunFunGirl
$60 per person round trip
Mstravelocity
the travel cost was about $60 per person round trip. it was very convenient and they were also quite prompt..
Jafroqueen
Booked it through this website for $120. It was top notch and well done. Heard it was a good bargain after talking to other guests.
TexasTwosome
When we booked our trips with Cheapcarribean.com, there is a check box that will let you include the shuttle to and from the airport and resort. They really take care of you this way. But if you want to take a taxi, I think they are around $30.00+- each way per person. I recommend booking it all at once. We had a small bus, which is a lot bigger than a taxi...
jetski1
When I went it was about $60 a person for roundtrip from and to the airport.

Airport to resort transfers, upgrades and diving.5 answers
We are considering a trip to Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach DR. The resort is 1.5 hours from the airport. Are transfers included? If not, what is the usual mode and and price? Are there upgrades to ocean view rooms? How much?
I dive but my friend doesn't, how much for introductory dive lessons? How is the reef diving?

PADI & SSI certificate courses are available at an additional charge, please inquire once you arrive. Dive enthusiasts enjoy the coral reef found in the waters off of Bayahibe's coast!

Switch airports. The Romanda is only 20 minutes away. You can hire a shuttle online for $50 each way. Our driver was waiting for us with our name on a sign. Its a very small airport but has a couple of flights in each day. We stayed in one of the beach bungalos. Those are the only ones with ocean view. They are small duplex rooms sitting right on beach. Patio looking out to ocean.
SunFunGirl
Transfers are included. The rooms can be problematic. The best are the bungalows. the beachfront bungalows do cost extra. The reef in front of the hotel is not exciting..kind of drab and not very colorful. after a few days, and tips from several snorkelers, we finally found our way to the good spot. Go waay out almost to the buoys where the boats pass by. Out there everything is bigger and better. We saw a medium sized black ray with silver spots cruising along. His thin black tail looked to be about 4 ft. long.some medium size sea fans and spiky sea urchins also. Large starfish on the trip to Saona, but not near the hotel. Bring snorkel on way to Saona!
Rainforest
Book the round trip with this website. Mine was $120 for both of us. Resort is actually 2 hours from airport. Don't know about diving training cost, but Pro Excursions was top notch and we loved them. They are on here as well. 5 star rated on trip advisor. Reef diving (really snorkeling) in front of hotel was probably 5 of 10. Good reef fish, but reefs were not in prime condition due to proximity of resort. Book a trip out.
TexasTwosome
We have booked the shuttles with the package! They will be waiting for you at the airport. However, I have heard that the taxi rides are about $30.00 each way per person, might be a little cheaper, but then your in a small van or car. We have been on small buses. But the taxi's are waiting at the airport. There wasn't upgrades to ocean view when we booked or when we arrived but we had booked a garden view bungalow, but got a ocean view one! I don't know how that worked out. As far as the scuba class, they offer the whole package, with 3 dives for I think round $300+-. Or the free one and then the one dive out in front of the resort down to 10 meters, I took a dive along with my daughter, and my dive cost $40 for the one tank, and I think her cost was about $80.00 But I am not sure about her cost. . . I enjoyed the shallow dive, it was a nice reef, rays, eel, king fish, and many other colorful fish. The snorkeling is great out in front of the resort. Take lots of sun screen, it cost about $19.00 a bottle there!

Travel from airport to resort?7 answers
Why doesnt the package just have us fly into Romanda? Does it cost more to fly there instead of Santa Domingo?
And if we did not reserve roundtrip transportation from Santa Domingo, how much will it cost once we are there?
1 year, 12 months ago
excited!!!
Our packages are based on flights to Santo Domingo (SDQ) due the variety of flight options. However if you prefer to fly into La Romana an agent can assist with confirming the package for you although the flights are limited and tend to be more expensive. Approximate driving time between Santo Domingo airport and the La Romana/Bayahibe area is 1 hr. 30 min. The cost for round-trip airport transfers is $60 per person to Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach for example.
KellyCC
La romana is more expensive since there are less flights and options than Santo Domingo.
Zucca
I looked around for other transportation, but the package offered here is what we ended up going with (through Turinter). It was easy, and as cheap as anything else (if not cheaper).
jennybunny
I'm guessing it does cost more to fly into La Romana or they get a kickback from the "tour operator" fo the transfer vans. It was a hike, but went quickly. Don't think about renting a car though.... peopel drive like a video game......totally wreckless. Pay the money in advance and embtrace the ride. we got our driver to pull over for some cold beers to go on each of our rides!
UStravlr
The trip from Santa Domingo is long it takes 2.5 hours and Punta Cana is about an 1.5 from there. Not sure why they have you go there and yes it would be expensive to travel if you dont book the round trip to the hotel.
mylady1
Not sure if you received an answer already, but it's worth the cost of the roundtrip transportation!!! There is no closer airport to La Romana then Santo Domingo and to take a taxi an hour and a half drive to the resort would be way more then the transportation Cheap Carribean offers.

Can someone using a wheelchair/scooter get around okay?6 answers
I went to the Majestic Colonial last year and loved it, but the ocean was too rough for me. Next time I go to the DR, I'm taking my scooter so I can get around faster. I have a hard time walking. Not to the VIP beach or the beach itself but other pool areas and welcome areas yes it would be okay.
Mikemc11
there were a few people in wheelchairs there. not sure how they got into the hotel portion, but they would beable to get into the bungalows. The ocean is pretty calm. but the service is poor and communication is difficult

Yes everyting is accessible. The ocean mite be a bit rough but the pools are very accessible. Now do not forget the bus ride it is about two hours from the airport ,it is all wherted enjoy.Chris

Everything but the rooms. Unless you have a beach bungalow or something on the first floor, there are no elevators. Stairs only.
palmtreelover62511
This year the water was a little rougher than normal. (Went July 10-15). The last two time there the water was calm with very little waves or none at all. Even this year you will not be able to body surf the waves.
Jim48
The ocean is calm. More like a bay. I do not believe you would be able to get around on the beach in a scooter but you could anywhere else in the resort. Our favorite pool starts out with inches of water so very easy to walk into if mobility is a problem. I don't want to be the final answer on the accessibility of the beach as there is a lot of beach and there may be a place I didn't see.

What about roaches?1 answer
I keep reading reviews that there is a roach problem. Is this true?
Bailey44
Bugs, as a whole, are a problem in any tropical environment. You will typically be exposed a many more bugs in a warm, humid environment than you will see in cooler , drier climates. The property makes every effort to address these issues on a daily basis but unfortunately cannot eradicate bugs completely. Often the roaches that are reported are due to guests bringing food back to their rooms and leaving dirty plates out which will attract these unwelcome guests. Be assured that the resort is aware of the reports regarding bugs and is actively addressing them.

Hotel Description
A Caribbean Vacation with an International Twist
Jonesin' for a tropical getaway, but want something out of the ordinary, too? Does an ocean-side trapeze lesson sound exotic enough? Believe it, acrobatic tricks on the beach are within reach at Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach. This hotel, situated on a beautiful stretch of soft white sand, is a circus act and seaside resort in one.
Your all inclusive stay at Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach includes more than a free trapeze lesson with a professional instructor. There are Caribbean dance classes, yoga and meditation sessions and a disco. International theme parties and dinners bring Italy and France to you; you might even get a taste of Carnival. If you still have energy to burn despite the nonstop beach games and live music, you can hit the gym with a trainer, and chill out in the sauna.
At Wyndham Dominicus Beach, though, the best place to see and be seen is the coral-stone grotto. It's the perfect place to lounge the day away, gazing out at the ocean... or maybe at the sexy European vacationers strolling around! With the hotel's three freshwater pools, the chances for Speedo sightings are high. When it's time for an afternoon nap, stretch out on one of the outdoor Bali beds while the sound of the waves lulls you to sleep.
You'll need to rest up before your scuba lesson. Wyndham Dominicus Beach offers a variety of diving packages, from beginner level to advanced. The hotel's PADI-certified instructors are happy to show newbies the ropes. Experienced divers will salivate over the chance to explore the 240-ft shipwreck right in front of Dominicus Beach.
To stay fueled for the fun, make reservations at Viva Mexico, where old-school Mexican dishes are served up with modern flair. If you've got the late-night munchies, the wood-burning stove at La Pizzeria is glowing all night long, so grab a slice before you hit the sack. When the night is done, retreat to your oceanfront bungalow or recently renovated hotel room. Crash in your comfy bed to recharge your batteries for tomorrow.
