still working the kinks out

The sunscape was clean and the room was rate. service slow and non attentive. The gym was not open all week, which was a bi disappointment for me. The had only been open 3 weeks or so, therefore I figure they are still working it out. One of the restaurants wasn't open yet. The spa was lovely.

Great Potential But Needs Work

Overall we had a good experience but there are several things that need to be worked on throughout the resort. I believe that once they work the kinks out Sunscape Dominican Beach will be a great economical resort option. There were 6 adults total in my group. We stayed at Sunscape 1/3/17- 1/7/17 in 3 different rooms. Rooms: We arrived at about 4pm and had to wait about an hour for our rooms. Not a big deal to us at all. We enjoyed some drinks at the lobby bar. The wait staff & bartenders were very friendly and attentive. Plus the bar was stocked with top shelf liquor. We also could have gone to one of the restaurants, walked around the resort , etc. Unfortunately we had issues in all 3 rooms. In one the air conditioning wasn’t working. It took a couple of hours but the room was upgraded to an ocean view deluxe room. In another room the toilet never flushed correctly. In the last room the water in the toilet keep running and there was no shower curtain or door. The issue with the toilet was fixed immediately but there was no solve for the shower. Other than these issues the rooms were comfortable and clean. The TV & safe worked just fine but I heard that was not the case in all rooms. It was a bit bothersome that maid service was so sporadic. As other reviewers have mentioned, one day they would clean in the early morning and others not until after 4pm. Restaurants: Our first night we opted to try the Italian restaurant……TOTAL DISASTER. Although the restaurant was barely half full the staff could not handle the orders. It seemed to us that the kitchen was trying to service not only the Italian restaurant but the French place next door as well. There was no organization with the wait staff on the floor. We couldn’t figure out who our server was and it took forever to get water & have our orders taken. Someone brought around bread but then they didn’t have butter. We were told it would be available later. It took at least 45 minutes for the appetizers to arrive. Once they did they were a joke. The fried calamari was an order of 4 tiny rings. Entrees arrived 30 min after the appetizers. Food was just so so…while the chicken was decent the lasagna had absolutely no flavor. All portions were very small. The other restaurants we tried throughout our stay were Windows, Chopsticks and The Grill. These were all good options & much more pleasant experiences than the Italian place. They provided plenty of food options. The seafood, fruit and veggies always tasted fresh. Staff: All the staff we encountered (besides the at the Italian place) were fantastic. So friendly and attentive! You are in a Spanish speaking country. Don’t expect everyone to speak your language perfectly. You as the visitor should also make an effort! Entertainment: They always had plenty of activities planned throughout the day…zumba class, games on the beach, fire show at night. Most were good, some were a bit cheesy for my personal taste. Did I mention the lobby bar has top shelf liquor?? That was all we needed. We hung out there a lot and played cards, dice, etc. Pools & Beach: So many great pool options. You could see staff cleaning the pools daily. They provided plenty of chairs, floating mats, inner tubes, etc. They get 5 stars in the pool category. The beach was a bit hilly but overall fine. They do have blockers in the ocean to control the waves. This didn’t bother us at all. Flat beach with no blockers is only a short walk away. Drink service was great and there were plenty of chairs available as long as you arrived early.

Stay at Your Own Risk

Let me get to the positive first: - The staff at the resort is AWESOME. They were the primary redeeming quality for all of the issues we experienced. And most of the reason we didn't transfer to a different resort. They were friendly and fun and wanted everyone to enjoy themselves. Really appreciated their hospitality. - Restaurants overall were good, and we were happy with the selection. However that's the most positive feeedback I can give as the reviews and issues I had read turned out to be true, here is what we experienced: - Check in issues: We had a great staff member to take us to our room, and then unfortunately 4 more rooms after since there were issues with all of them. - The first room had construction still going on in it, the second room had people in it (VERY ALARMING that staff would just walk into a room that is occupied), the third room was still being worked, the staff member then checked multiple rooms in another building that were not ready before putting us in a room that had construction going on in all the rooms around it. Because of the noise, we waited again for another room. We waited in the lobby for quite some more time as I was told that management would speak to me, they didn't until I went and found someone again ad which point I was told there were no more roomsat the resort and we would be put on a waiting list. -After speaking to multiple staff members I was finally given another room, despite the resort being "sold out". In all, it took nearly 4 hours, and much stress and frustration, to get into our room. Many other people were having the same issue. This resort was not ready for the public. - When we finally got into our room there were still construction markings on the wall and the bottom two drawers of the dresser were broken, and the bed was hard as a rock. - I returned to the desk in the morning because my girlfriend and I no longer felt comfortable at the resort as a result of the management and organizational issues and the fact that staff don't know which rooms are booked and just walk into rooms (my girlfriend put heavy items in front of the door to prevent this from happening thereafter). The front desk told me hotel management would get back to me that day which they never did. - Ice bucket but no ice machines in the building - had to go to a restaurant to fill it - Gym was not yet open while we were there despite being told it would be. - Most of the drinks were very watery or did not taste like what I thought they would based on the ingredients. - One day housekeeping didn't make the room up at all despite their not being a sign out. - One day house keeping did clean the room even though I had the privacy sign on the door. - Multiple 8am phone calls to tell me to attend an orientation. - Pictures of the beach at the resort must have been very old because they all failed to include the large, ugly geotubes in the water that prevented us from taking many pictures from the beach. I should know what a property will look like when I arrive. - The property itself was still largely unfinished. There was construction in our building the whole time we were there, some of the ponds were unfinished, large wells were dug out on the property in many locations, and the property smelled like sewage in a lot of areas.

Fantastic Location!

We have had an amazing week at Sunscape. The resort is newly opening so they are still getting their sea legs under them with some finishes. These petty small issues didn't take away our fantastic experience. The location can't be beat. We walked into Bavaro and ate at some yummy local fares. Our morning ocean walks could last for miles. The resort food was pretty typical all inclusive fare....nothing amazing, but the many different dining options were nice. Arrive at Chopstick early or it will be a long wait. Pools were great and they had tons of blow-up toys for kids of all ages.
