Good times

Staff was great! Pools and beaches were as good as expected. Only downside was I couldn't get a cold beer unless I iced it down in my room. Even the refrigerator in the room was just below room temp. When I had the main tame version come up to check it out they acted as if it was just fine?????? Besides that the only other complaint was the fact that I was on my honeymoon, and had to meet with multiple people trying to sell me more vacations. Just to get my shuttle back to the airport I had to go talk to a guy trying to sell me on a bunch of stufff I didn't need. Also had a two hour tour that I never intended on doing but they make you feel like it is a must.

Let me start with the resort is beautiful, the grounds and rooms are kept well. However I do believe a lot of work is to be done. Check in was painful after a long flight and an hour plus car ride from the airport I just wanted to eat and shower. My original booking room was not available at the time of check in. I was given a different room which was fine. However the gentleman who checked me in was very rude. A credit card was asked for at arrival even though I had already paid. I was told that they would just put a hold on my card in case i acquired any additional charges When i voiced my concerns of not liking the idea and not being told prior to my trip I was told this is procedure. The Bell hop functions as a resort guide and bell hop. I've encountered this before however they need more training on how to get around the resort. Dining is in my opinion the weakest point here. The Buffet is only open for breakfast and lunch. Options are limited at both seatings. For dinner your options are the specialty restaurants or room service. I ate at the Mexican, French and Italian. Mexican was the best. I tried eating at the Seafood restaurant and steak house was turned away from both. Specialty restaurants do not take reservations however you can call and put your name on the list and they will call your room when a table is free. To me this is reservations however they do not see it that way. The hostesses at these two restaurants were very rude and directed you to another restaurant that may have a seat. Entertainment is also limited the shows are not worth staying up for. The live music during dinner hours is really nice. Pools and Beach was really nice. There are 2 tranquil pools that do not get crowded and have Bar access and servers that come around. The Main pool is nice can tend to get fuller quicker but has direct access to the beach. The beach was gorgeous everyday the men worked hard to get the Algae out of the water. i didnt see any turtles as i didnt go out far enough from other people they are a site to be seen. This is a newer hotel open about 15 months personally wouldnt stay again but it maybe for someone else.

One of the best I've been to

I've been to Mexico maybe 20 times and have stayed at several all-inclusive resorts. Secrets Akumal is in my top 2. Very nice resort. The standard rooms are incredible and very spacious. The grounds at the resort are beautiful and well kept. The pools were great along with the service. I read bad reviews about the entertainment and the public beach. I found the nightly shows to be very entertaining. There are short segments of live music at various locations throughout the resort which was really, really good and tastefully done. We were very impressed. We didn't mind the public beach at all, in fact, we hardly noticed it. Yes, there are some people laying on towels in front of the resort, but hey, it's a beach! We snorkeled at the beach and were not let down. We went out twice and both times saw 4 turtles, sting rays, barracuda and even squid. Overall I have nothing bad to say about the resort. The only thing I would change would be the wine. I'm not a wine snob, I usually drink $10 a bottle wine. The house wine the resort uses is not very good. We kind of had to force it down. I wish they would go with something else.

Never going back

Don't really know where to start so I'll start with the room. Comfortable and pretty, however at half a mile from the beach. Want closer? It's an extra $600. House keeping knocks at 9pm and 7am for no reason. Restaurants: don't count on having a breakfast facing the ocean. Most of the restaurants don't have a view at all. The food is ok. Not great not bad, just average. Italian and French were good, the rest was pretty lame, like stale donuts at the coffee shop. The beach is disappointing compared to Cancun. Lots and lots of people not belonging to the hotel are allowed to stay on the beach because it's public. It's crowded and noisy. The main pool looks like spring break. Tones of people getting drunk all day, all with a beer in their hands, yelling and screaming. Overall, the best part of the hotel is snorkeling with the turtles and the kindness of the staff. For the rest, I didn't like it and won't come back.

What's to Love

After a flight with germ-ridden humans, the cool towel and welcome cocktail refresh body and soul.

Elegant, hip suites in warm woods and bright pinks & reds that include a private balcony or terrace.

Many fantabulous suites have in-suite Jacuzzis for two and heart-stopping ocean views. (For realz).

Akumal means "Place of the Turtles" so you can swim, snorkel, and even talk to these magic creatures.

Secrets box for private room service delivery - you don't ever have to see a human if you don't want to.

Descending into Relaxation Central (the spa) with the hydrotherapy circuit and a Swedish massage.

Snorkeling at the second largest barrier reef in the world and enjoying hours of coral-gazing and fish-ogling.

What We'd Change

The drive from the airport is a little lengthy at an hour long, but the seclusion on top of the fact you're only 20 minutes away from famous Playa del Carmen more than makes up for it.

Why You Should Go

You're an hour away from the airport, but remember that you'll be totally secluded.

The other cherry is that you're only 20 minutes away from beautiful Playa del Carmen.

This heavenly haven is rated as one of the Top 10 Beaches in Mexico by TripAdvisor®. Love this.

Be like Gena Davis and try your hand at archery, or be a human sling-shot with Euro-bungee.

You can take a cocktail class (channel Tom Cruise in "Cocktail"), or shake a leg in dance classes.

You can upgrade to Preferred Club which means better rooms, private swimming pool, and much more.

For a break from beachy stuff, you can hang out and be awed by Mayan ruins nearby.

Break out your inner fish with deep-sea fishing, water polo, Hobie cats, and kayaking.
