Sandos Caracol
great fun, solid food and bar. Children cohorted in family pools, plenty of adult only/quiet space. Also went out snorkeling to an excellent reef. Lots of ethnic/cultural events: male dancers so athletic!
We had a big wedding there, and parents (us) were very happy with results.
Good hotel if you like walking. I did not mind the walking but if you do not like walking do not book this hotel. You have to walk alot to get around the whole resort. Food was above average, not great. Hotel room was kept clean but was very hot, the air conditioner lumbered to keep up with the heat. Hotel front desk was not very attentive, they missed a wake up call that get us running late to an excursion, they never sent a cart to pick up our luggage when leaving, and I had to raise a scene to get my son's Game Boy & case back that was dropped in the lobby. They also called after two days asking if we got our welcome package, when we showed up I asked if this was a time share solitication and was told no, after 15 minutes of listening to a pitch for an exclusive membership to this hotel chain I walked out. The hotel did have alot of options for my son and he had a great time.
We stayed two years ago at Sandos Coracol Eco-Resort prior to our recent trip this past week. I've come to find that 'all inclusive' doesn't mean ALL. Since our last stay one of the pools and and the service area at the beachfront, was changed to Adults Only. We weren't informed of this. Guest services wanted us to do the 90 minute tour (again-which include the things we were able to do before, but have now made for Adults only) which I declined; and said if I joined (even though I go on family vacations to be with my kids) that my son shouldn't mind (who is not an adult) if my daughter and I go to the adult side and leave him to do whatever. Poor salesmanship and could only see the dollar signs in his eyes. Although staff were quick to replace the phone and toilet paper holder, they didn't work when we got there. The rooms did not have air conditioning as they say; unless you call opening the windows 'air conditioning'. Beds are super hard as are the pillows. 7 restaurants- but not all-inclusive. You are limited by the number of days you stay. We stayed 6 nights and were only allowed to make a reservation at 2. Otherwise it's the snack bar or the International restaurant....everyday!! Beaches are beautiful, and rooms kept clean - maid was outstanding. We didn't appreciate being awakened 3 days in a row by the hotel desk staff (on the phone at 8am) to ask if we were enjoying are stay. Some people like to sleep in a bit on vacation.....especially when the night shows can be heard from ever corner of the resort until 1:00a.m. We definitely won't be returning; and if other friends ask if they should go there, I'll be sure to say no.
My husband and I have been to the Mayan Riviera area a couple of times, but this was the first time with our almost 2-year-old son. We had a great time and would love to go back.
The room was nice, clean, spacious, and maintained. The only problem we had was that we requested two double beds and instead got a king bed with a sofa. We requested extra sheets so we could make a bed on the sofa for our son, and it took 4 or 5 phone calls before the sheets arrived. They apologized profusely for the mix up/delay, and we didn't have any other issues. Other than that, the housekeeping staff did a good job (Thanks Rebeca!) and brought extra towels and water when we requested it. People always complain about the beds. No, they're not the softest, but they're just like every other bed in a resort in Mexico and they're definitely not that bad.
We were in building 50. Don't let the map deceive you. The map makes it look worse than it is. It is a big resort, but it's not like it takes 10 minutes to walk from the last row of buildings to the lobby. It's about a 2 1/2 minute walk. Not bad at all. And if you take the path through the jungle, it's really quick. We carried our son pretty much everywhere if he was too tired to walk, and I can say it was harder to carry him through the airport than it was through the resort. Being in that last row of buildings is really no big deal because everything is within a short walk.
This resort is fantastic for kids. Our son loved the Aqua Park. Even at his age/size, he was able to ride on every slide and just kept asking to go again. I have seen a few reviews complaining about the water being cold. It was a little on the cooler side, but definitely not cold. Once you're in the water for a minute, you don't notice it being cold. It's actually refreshing on a hot day. Our son didn't mind the temperature of the water. He was too busy having fun on the slides. I was a little surprised that there wasn't a zero-depth area, but it didn't seem to be a problem. Our son is a little on the smaller side for his age, and the water level was probably about at his ribs, but he didn't have trouble walking around in the water.
The Kids Club is great too. We weren't interested in dropping our son off and leaving him, but if you have a child as young as ours, you can stay with them and watch them play. They had a a large play structure with slides, stuff to crawl through, and a ball pit, a bouncey house, a trampoline, XBox, foosball, air hockey, crayons and paper, and a movie theater. Our son had a blast in the bouncey house, trampoline, and ball pit. If you are interested in dropping your child off and leaving, I think it's pretty secure. There was a woman at the front counter signing kids in and out and locking the gate, and another woman walking around in the play area watching the kids. I wouldn't say there is a lot of supervision, but it's a pretty contained area and there are at least a couple of adults nearby.
The eco aspect of the resort is neat. There are recycling bins everywhere and they appreciate you sorting your trash and using the recycling bins. They left a lot of the natural jungle and just built within it instead of leveling everything and just having concrete everywhere. So it's neat that you can take a little side path through the jungle to get back to your room. You can see where they grow herbs, and do their composting, and even where they have native bees. We saw deer, iguanas, raccoons, cats, parrots, and of course the donkeys in the center of the resort. It's a neat place for kids who like animals.
The beach is nice and very big. We never had trouble finding chairs and didn't feel crowded. There was a volleyball net set up and there always seemed to be a game going. We bought a bucket and shovel set in the gift shop and our son had a blast playing on the beach, digging in the sand, and trying to chase the birds. The ocean was a little rough from the wind and just being on the east side (if you want calmer water, try Cozumel) but it was still fine for wading.
The food was good. We didn't have trouble finding something we liked at every meal. With our little one, we didn't even try to do a la carte and instead just stuck with the buffets. I think our favorite was actually the Mexican buffet. They made fresh fajitas and were carving fresh meat for tacos all the time. It also wasn't as busy as the La Laguna International buffet, and was easier to get a table. We ate at the international buffet several times for breakfast and it was good too. The International buffet had some good dishes for lunch and dinner too. They made a fish with chipotle sauce that was fantastic. My husband did the omelete bar every day and it was fairly quick and he seemed to enjoy it. Our least favorite was the Italian restaurant. The information book in our room said the Italian restaurant was a buffet, but at night they converted it to a la carte so you had to have a reservation. We did try the buffet one day at lunch but it wasn't anything to write home about.
Having tasted the milk in Mexico before and remembering that it tasted funny, I was a little concerned before we left about whether my son would drink it. So before we left I researched it and found that it is actually "ultra pasteurized." My son drank it, and I tasted it, and it was totally fine. It tastes a little creamier than skim or 1% milk in the USA which I think is what most people are used to. If you have little kids, you're probably used to tasting whole milk - that's what it tasted like to me. If you're concerned like I was, don't be. No issues there.
The only complaint we had about the restaurants was the hours they were open. They didn't open for lunch until 12:30. That's a little late when you have a little one, especially when he has completely worn himself out playing and just wants to eat and take a nap. It would have been nice if the restaurants were open at 11:30 for lunch. Instead, we had to eat at the snack bar for lunch several times, or just let our little boy fall asleep and then eat late in the afternoon. The snack bar was good for burgers, hot dogs, french fries, nachos, and ice cream.
The bars did a good job with drinks. There were enough bars that there was never a long wait.
This was a fantastic resort for a family with small children. We're already thinking about going back next year and perhaps taking our nephew or friends with kids because there was just so much for kids to do. I highly recommend this resort.

This resort offers several different room categories, many of them feature a balcony or terrace. When you are pricing out a trip you will see the room categories available to choose from. You may click on each room category and it will provide a description of the room, whether it includes a balcony, and a picture of the room. It will also contain the additional cost of that room upgrade. Pictures of the resort can be found on the resort home page.

We just returned back on April 8th. Every room I saw at the resort had a patio/balcony. Some faced the pool, some faced the ocean. The balcony rooms facing the main pool seemed that they would not be very private. We had a king room on the 3rd floor. We had a large jacuzzi tub on our patio plus 2 chairs and a table and a built in stucco bench. it was very roomy and our balcony overlooked the adults only pool and many trees. it was still a beautiful view even though it wasn't an ocean view. I just put my request for a king room in the comment section when i booked and we got exactly what we wanted. Our room was a junior suite. Had king bed, pull out couch and nice bath. room was very spacious and the balcony was great. Hope that helps.

We are able to extend your airfare to a later date if you wanted to split your time between a resort we offer and your timeshare. This would need to be done via telephone with one of our Caribbean Consultants.

The Beach was awesome. The island beyond the shoreline was nice. You could walk out to it and just relax. Basically its a sandbar but its just getting away from the shoreline but put you towel out early it fills up fast. I recommend the sailboating and kayaking.
StillSmilin
the beach was nice. since it was a bit stormy during our visit they would even go out to clean it every morning.

Actually the beach is the main problem of this resort. To be exact - sea floor is ROCKY. Sharp rocks are scattered here and there, so without wet shoes, you may get hurt. There are also huge rocks sticking out of the ocean, covered by man-made awkward coat. It may be fun initially to play on those artificial islands, but generally it disturbs my vision of nice looking beach. It doesn't look good especially when the coat gets loose. The beach sand is white and soft, cleaned every morning by the resort staff. Te water is crystal clear off shore. You can easily see the bottom when sailing or jetskiing.
Rafal
The beaches were wonderful. I walked the water edges quite often, the sand was raked cleaned every night, and the water warm and inviting. Even with a short rain storm, the waves did not get very high.
raspberry361
The sea is always rolling in and there are rocks in the sea near the shoreline.

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa: All Inclusive and Kid-Friendly
Wake up to the sounds of wildlife under a jungle canopy at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa in Playa del Carmen. Built around a natural eco-system, the resort's dedication to low impact on its environment means the monkeys and tropical birds are right outside the door. Kids love it! Children are a definite priority at Sandos Caracol, which offers a Kids Club for games and crafts, and a program for teens that includes Wii and Xbox games. Topping it off is the new Sandos Aqua Park with 17 waterslides for wet-and-wild fun.
Just steps from the warm sands of Playa del Carmen, the resort is home to cenotes, mangroves, and natural lagoons. Spend the day working on your tan, under a palapa or splashing around the two pools, one with an area just for kids. Grab a margarita at the poolside La Tortuga, before sampling one of the eight restaurants. Prime rib at El Gaucho steakhouse tastes great, and kids can't get enough tempura at the Pan-Asian El Templo. Check out the live, music-and-dance extravaganzas at the theatre, before leaving the kids with a babysitter, so you can dance the night away at La Mision.
While the kids have fun, adults have theirs, at Scuba Libre, the hotspot for water sports. Snorkel, kayak, boogie board; or, hop on a Hobie Cat and explore the shore. Round up the family for beach volleyball, and show the kids how it's done in a game of darts before unwinding at the spa. The four-handed Lomi Lomi massage uses Hawaiian techniques to work out tension; 80 minutes of pure heaven!
When the kids tire of splashing around, head to a huge Junior Suite with its perfect amount of space for families, one king bed and a double sofa bed in the living area. Tuck the little ones in and slide into the Jacuzzi for a quick soak, or take advantage of the 24-hour room service for a late night nosh. Couples in search of quiet and upgraded amenities love the Select Club with its adults-only facilities.
