Highly Recommend

First off, let me say the bad reviews on this place are ridiculous. This place was amazing. This was the first vacation my husband and I ever took together, so we didn't know what to expect, but we wanted it to be perfect. When we first arrived, we were greeted by the staff saying "welcome home" with coconut water and a cool, scented towel. They offered to upgrade our room to a suite with a jacuzzi tub on the patio for a small fee, so we agreed and were pleased (they even showed us the room first to make sure we liked it). Our concierge, King Kong, was very helpful and funny and took our bags to our room for us. He explained that all the drinks in our room were included, except the wine/champaigne, which wasn't a problem since if you get it at one of the bars/restaurants, it's free. They do restock the mini fridge every day. After getting settled, we decided to take a tour of the resort. We were starving from not eating all day and we happened to wander at the one time when almost all the restaurants/buffets were closed (5pm), but places started opening up quickly. I do recommend knowing where the buffets/restaurants are and what time they open/close. We got a little lost that first day, but after that, we were fine. They also offer a train that will take you around the resorts, but we just walked everywhere. This resort is connected with 3 other resorts and you have access to everything there. Only the Royal Suites of Turquesa is adults only - so any restaurants/buffets/pools located in the other resorts will have children, just as a heads up. The buffet food was okay, nothing special, but there are a lot of options to choose from. When booking this resort, I assumed all of the buffets were included, but figured any nicer restaurants, especially ones that require reservations would cost money - nope, these are also included. We figured this out a little late, so I highly recommend taking advantage of them. Sumptuori (Japenese hibatchi) was the best. Our chef, Hector, was hilarious. He called on my husband to have him try chopping up some of the eggs and made him wear the chef's hat, then offered a picture with us. We also tried Trattoria (Italian), which was pretty good, but we didn't make a reservation so it had a bit of a wait. The free drinks really make your money worth the while here. Every bar serves the same thing, so you can take one drink with you and go get the same (or different) drink after wandering a little bit. They only have 2 types of beer - Presidente (on draft) and Budweiser (bottle) but both are good. They have a huge drink menu and will make whatever you want. In the morning we had mimosas and in the afternoons we had fruity drinks/beer by (or in) the pool. Carlos, who is the bartender in the main pool behind the lobby, was extremely accommodating. He always had a smile on his face and joked around a lot with us. After a while, he started doubling up on the booze, which we were not complaining about. We only used the main pool (which is adults only) but we really enjoyed it - especially the swim up bar. The chairs fill up quickly, so make sure to grab a good spot relatively early. We did find another pool that was kind of hiding, also adults only, but we didn't use it because we liked ours so much. The beach was beautiful - it was definitely more packed than the pool, but the sand was extremely soft and they had the beach beds for you to lay on. The landscaping is breathtaking - they take care of it daily. Lots of beautiful flowers, fountains, palm trees, and tiki huts. We even saw a few peacocks just walking throughout the resort. When it came to our room, we really enjoyed it, but seemed to have a little bit of an issue with turning off the jets to the outside tub - it kept turning off our power. Thankfully, my husband is handy and just used the fuse box to reset it and then it was fine. It went out again in our checkout day and the fuse box wasn't fixing it, so we told the front desk and they fixed it within an hour. We also had a little leak from our ceiling (we think it was from the air conditioner) and once again we told the front desk and it was taken care of quickly. We wondered whether or not we needed travel outlets for our phones and electronics, but you do not. They have a safe in the closet where you program the lock to keep your valuables in there (passport, money, etc). They have a pillow menu for you to choose from at no extra cost. I had a little trouble with the wifi (at first), it kind of comes and goes, but it worked throughout most of the resort. They offer room/butler service, but we did not take advantage of this. We did, unfortunately, have to take advantage of the doctor because my husband got sick, but we think it was due to the weather change. They have a conventient/gift shop on site that is open early and closes late, they actually prefer you to use USD rather than pesos. Prices weren't awful. There are a few people on the resort who will hassle you for a massage or to buy jewelry, etc, but we just brushed them off. There is a gym and soccer field/tennis court on site, but we didn't use them. Keep in mind, we did tip people, nothing major, maybe $10-20, but we didn't do it just because, we did it because these people went out of their way to make sure we were enjoying ourselves - they earned it. Most of the people at Royal Suites of Turquesa are older, so this is not a "party" resort or have too much of a nightlife. I prefered that when I booked because I wanted to actually relax, not hear loud music/party all night (and we are 24, so it's not like we don't like it) but we were probably the youngest people there. Make sure to actually go to the front desk when you check out, it takes a little bit because they inspect the mini bar in your room to see if there are any extra charges. Everyone on all of the resorts were friendly and helpful, they truly enjoy their jobs. All in all, for not having any expectations for our first vacation, it was absolutely amazing. We felt relaxed and like we got our money's worth. So if you're trying to decide whether or not to stay here - here is an honest review, but I promise it is more than worth the trip. We will most definitely be back!

Never Had a Reason to Leave

Overall, the resort was fantastic! The room was gorgeous and we loved the room service concept of having a window-sized box built in to the room that allows staff to place food inside and flip a light to let you know it's there. From within the room, it is only accessible by you unlocking the internal door from your side of the room and taking the food. When you're done, simply place the tray back into this box, flip the light from red to green, and re-lock your door. Staff sees a green light on the outside of the room and takes the tray away! Mini-bar came with tons of alcohol free to the all-inclusive guests. The resort is so beautiful that it would be near impossible to get a room without a view. Wrist bands are given to each guest, colored by which resort you are with and your seniority as a guest. So there are four resorts on the compound, which makes this nice in that family can be on one resort and you in the all-inclusive, adult-only and still be within easy contact of each other. Simply walk or have the lodging butler call for a ride or you can even catch a ride with any of the staff that passes down the road. The bands let staff know which facilities you have access to. All-inclusive gold bands provide access to some pools, beach areas and restaurants only open to their guests. My understanding is that the spa facilities are open 24/7 to only the gold band members as well. Your band changes colors, along with some amenities depending on whether you are a 5-year veteran or 10-year veteran of the resort. There wasn't a lot of entertainment on the compound, especially on the adult-only side, but my wife and I ventured down the road to the other resorts and found variety. They have a theater on the compound that also has regular entertainment. Free and accessible transportation will take you to the city of Punta Cana which is a good sized city with plenty to see and do. Honestly, this was the first resort where we never took an excursion - we enjoyed the facilities and good weather too much. On the occasion, the staff did not provide immediate service, it was clearly understandable as they keep so busy. I never saw one of the staff just sitting around - they were always on their feet and working. And this is not to say that the adult-only side of the compound was hectic or crowded. For when we went - mid-February - the was very relaxed. Even the beaches seemed liked a good crowd size. The reserved areas for the gold-band members made it even nicer. Beach-side BBQ or grilling of some sort, a beach-side restaurant and plenty of bars within reach, begged the visitor to never leave the sand and water! If my wife and I had any complaints at all is that we found the food and drinks to be average. They are certainly not using quality alcohol for the drinks and the food was just ok for me. The specialty restaurants are booked early, so make sure you reserve seating times as soon as you arrive. We tended to use the adult-only restaurants which may have been where the problem laid, but the quality seemed consistent in the beach-side restaurant, the sports bar and the Japanese restaurant that we also dined at. To be fair, we only did the sushi and they didn't exactly hire sushi masters, but the quality was not good for a food centered on raw fish. Anyway, it was a top-class resort and I'd certainly go back.

Very nice place.... needs some improvement though

Overall, this was a great vacation. The resort is large, we stayed in the Adults Only section (Royal Suites Turquesa). Our room was the swim-up room, which was fantastic. The pool bars are only open limited hours, so if you want to drink past 5:30pm, you'll need to go to another pool. Our one concierge (Carolina) was awesome, everything you needed she helped with a big smile. Others, not so much- they were busy on their cell phones a lot or really emphasized their inability to speak ANY english or get you help. The restaurants (A La Carte) leave a lot to be desired, especially the Brazilian that everyone raves about. You get skipped over when serving meats, and then you're told that they're finished serving meat. You get one shot for each meat, that's it. Then they forget you want dessert, so add another 20 minute wait. The restaurants seem to have a mixture of people who just walk around doing nothing, and only a few who do anything. Customer service is not their forte by any means. For example, it was pretty common to have a table with missing silverware, not offered water, or get skipped completely when ordering. The Zentropia guys hound you non-stop trying to sell a special 2 for 1 package, which isn't much of a deal with that's an every day offer. They hound you before you get to the Royal Gourmet restaurant for breakfast, then they walk through the pool areas. You'll get asked if you want to book the spa at least 4 times a day, sometimes more. If you venture over to the Palace (another Palladium resort which is connected), high tail it thru the lobby and beach... you'll be accosted by no less than 4 people trying to upsell you a service, ask for 2 hours of your time, or hock their stuff sitting on a table. If you pass by them quickly, they get rude and act like you're disrespecting them. The casino- just avoid it. You'll have someone watching your every move the whole time you're in there. The machines are set at very low payouts and odds compared to real casinos. They won't cash vouchers less than $1, and you can't insert a voucher into the machine. Even if you have $10 worth of small vouchers, they keep that money. Very limited selection of machines. If you want a beach spot or main pool chair/hut, get there at 5am. Even then, chances are you won't get a spot. The resort takes NO action to stop selfish tourists from "reserving" their spots with towels and magazines for 12 hours at a time. My suggestion- if you see that, just move their towel and take the chair. Last I checked, they didn't pay any more money than I did to stay there. Finally- good luck tracking down AmStar to get your shuttle set up. I didn't see the representative at any point the 9 days we spent (the table was empty) multiple times a day. We were finally told just show up at the time designated in the log book they have on the table. When the shuttle arrives, they want a ticket (which you can only get if you meet w/ AmStar). After telling them I already paid for the service and no way am I missing the shuttle and causing a scene did they agree to take us to the airport. The resort is beautiful, and with some better customer service, I think it would be well worth the money. I can't say that I'll ever go back to this particular resort, but definitely will visit the Dominican Republic again.
