Riu Republicia

This was our first trip to the Dominican and some things we wished we had known about traveling there were not told to us prior but would have been very helpful. First of all don't drink the water even at the resorts!! Second know some Spanish. This was probably the biggest issue we had at this resort, 90% of the staff spoke Spanish and close to no English. We would ask questions and were unable to get answers and were looked at like we were crazy. We figured with such a large resort this wouldn't be an issue. Food is available 24/7 but that doesn't mean that u can order food or go to a restaurant. There is a sports bar with a couple small fridges with sandwiches and fruit in them. Not good. The beach is breath taking!! Staff were always smiling and happy attitudes!! Another bummer was that the pools close at 7pm for cleaning and u are asked not to utilize them. Rooms were clean and had a lot of space. Beds were very hard. Our elevator was broke most of the week, 3rd floor via stairs got old after awhile. No room service available. Don't except someone to come to the beach for drink orders, they don't. They do serve at the pools. we had a wonderful vacation but probably wouldn't stay at this resort again especially at the price we paid.

Drinks - Not so good

The bartenders need better training on mixing cocktails and creating the drinks on the menus. The drinks were not very tasty at all. The flavored (colorful) liquors had a heavy syrup consistency while other liquors tasted watered down. I did not have this issue in Riu Costa Rico and the bartenders were very talented at creating drinks for us. Drinks we had never tried or even seen before and they were very light and tasty.

Friendly staff

The staff were wonderful. My only complaint is they need more servers around the pool & beach servers would be helpful. The quieter pool smelled like raw sewage. The main pool was nice but the announcer/DJ was loud & played the same music everyday. Ocean was too rough to swim. Water was not drinkable but plenty of bottled water. We were very careful to avoid tap water but still got VERY sick possibly from foods washed in umfiltered water. This was my second trip to the Dominican but first time getting sick. The reviews I read online were true. Wish I would have liatened & chose another resort.

If you're looking for a quick getaway

We booked a Spring Break Trip last minute, so our expectations were a bit lower than normal. The pools, beach and hotel staff are all lovely. Lots of entertainment in the afternoons and evenings. Where we found Riu lacking was the food was not very good. The resort tries to be a jack of all trades, but unfortunately is a master of none. Breakfast is their best meal of the day. All of the restaurants, but one are buffets. The Asian restaurant was particularly bad. We did buy some quality wine at the Duty Free airport shops, which I recommend if you care about what you are drinking with dinner. If you are looking for a very basic getaway, this is perfect for you. IF you have higher expectations of your resorts regarding mealtimes I wouldn't book Riu Republica.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

A palatial retreat where the mixin' and the minglin' is only with adults - no kids or crying babies at this resort.

You're located on Dominican's Macoa Beach - the mind-boggling ocean views go on for days.

Taking the introductory scuba lesson (it happens in the pool) - you'll be ready for the ocean waters in no time.

The pools are spacious - you won't bump into each other - no one wants to be that close (especially if the bathrooms are faraway).

When you're ready for your next cocktail, all you have to do is just swim on over to the bar.

Detoxing in the steam bath at the gym (all those icky work impurities will stream out of your pores).

The whirlpool bath that makes you feel like a jelly fish.

What We'd Change

The resort is large, but you really don't feel crowded and the restaurants can accommodate everyone easily and there is plenty of room at the pools.

Why You Should Go

So close to the airport you'll land and be at the resort in a flash - you want your vacay to start immediately!

The Mediterranean-style village Altos de Chavon is near - authentic architecture, swoon-worthy boutiques, cafes & more.

Also in Altos de Chavon, check the Amphitheatre for Kandela! - don't miss this Caribbean musical review.

See the lush landscapes at the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve: plants, animals, coral reef, freshwater lagoons & more.

Hone your golf skills and tune up your tennis swing - both are available near the resort.
