Overall Very Good

Overall, our week's stay was very good. The staff was friendly and courteous. The room was nice. Service was very good. The beach was beautiful and excellent for long walks. We enjoy good wine and that was the biggest disappointment. The resort's choice of wine was "undrinkable". They used a local Dominican Republic winery. The specialty restaurants give an option to purchase better quality wines which we did. But, at best, those wines were mediocre. Last year, we stayed at the Riu Macao and the wine and drinks were superior. I'm guessing that the Riu chain may be starting to cut corners.

Fun vacation

This resort is not a 5 star. I would give it 3.5 star. They resorts is beautiful. The food was ok. Good thing is you don't have to make reservations for the sit down restaurants. If full they give you a pager with blinking lights when your table is ready. The steak house was good but the Japanese not so good. Spanish is a must some workers you can tell don't understand the English but that wasn't a problem for us. The liquor is not top shelf, it's their brand and drinks were not great. The beach is beautiful and you can walk the beach for miles. The bar pool is small but there was something fun always going on around the pool area. I would not return here because it's far from everything and there not a town close by. Only thing to do is to go to casino. I've been to lots of Riu and this wasn't the best service we received. Riu Palaces are the best.

Good Value with some reservations

Good Value with some tradeoffs to other resorts in area. Common areas are excellent. Rooms are somewhat basic with kinda bland decor. Food was way above average, in fact very good. And very good service from wait staff. Alcohol and nonalcoholic drinks on the low end, very few branded liquors or beer. Mostly regional distilleries and brews. Entertainment at night was very good. Resort somewhat short on activities other than excursions. Mall/flea markets in town are pretty much a bust- the closest was actually pretty frightening to the wife and LOTS of pressure on Indonesian import junk and knockoff t shirts- did not want to return to resort right off. AVOID Net-Would stay again and recommend to friends.

need better dining options.

We just got back from a week at the Riu Republica. Overall it was very clean. The pools were great and the animation team kept things moving. My only complaint is they need better dining options. The food was fine but to have only one a la carte was off putting. The Italian was not very good and only had a few italian options. The Chinese was good even though it was buffet. The regular buffet was good. We went to the Steak Restaurant which was a la carte the meal was good. I think in due time they will get it together. The one thing I will say is you always read about theft and coming into rooms unannounced I can't say that any of that happened as a matter of fact I forgot to lock the safe one day and came back and everything was there untouched. I would go back but maybe a few years down the road.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

A palatial retreat where the mixin' and the minglin' is only with adults - no kids or crying babies at this resort.

You're located on Dominican's Macoa Beach - the mind-boggling ocean views go on for days.

Taking the introductory scuba lesson (it happens in the pool) - you'll be ready for the ocean waters in no time.

The pools are spacious - you won't bump into each other - no one wants to be that close (especially if the bathrooms are faraway).

When you're ready for your next cocktail, all you have to do is just swim on over to the bar.

Detoxing in the steam bath at the gym (all those icky work impurities will stream out of your pores).

The whirlpool bath that makes you feel like a jelly fish.

What We'd Change

The resort is large, but you really don't feel crowded and the restaurants can accommodate everyone easily and there is plenty of room at the pools.

Why You Should Go

So close to the airport you'll land and be at the resort in a flash - you want your vacay to start immediately!

The Mediterranean-style village Altos de Chavon is near - authentic architecture, swoon-worthy boutiques, cafes & more.

Also in Altos de Chavon, check the Amphitheatre for Kandela! - don't miss this Caribbean musical review.

See the lush landscapes at the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve: plants, animals, coral reef, freshwater lagoons & more.

Hone your golf skills and tune up your tennis swing - both are available near the resort.
