Great vacation, but bad food

My husband and I went for 4 nights in Feb 2017, with another couple, and overall had a great vacation here. The resort isn't as nice as some I've been to, but we did get a great deal on the price, so that was expected - and it's still a nice place. The beach is beautiful, sand is white and soft and very clean, but the waves are a little aggressive so swimming there is tough. The pools are nice and have plenty of seating, and the swim-up bar is great. The entertainment staff are super fun and friendly and there's always daily shows of some kind (we saw acrobats one day, and dancing another). It rained a couple of days when we were there, but we made the best of it and had a blast! On the downside, the food is really terrible. All options are buffet only, so there is no sit-down dinner option where you can be served off a menu. And, the options are just not good in terms of taste or quality. You can get by, but eating is more of a chore than anything else. Also, there are only two choices for wine, which are almost undrinkable. The beer is good though - Presidente is the brand. I ended up getting food poisoning on the last night there (still not sure what it was from), and we had to extend our trip one day since I was too sick to fly. The staff (from Riu, and from Cheap Caribbean) were very nice and helpful to my husband as he tried to figure everything out, so that was very much appreciated. Overall - even if I hadn't gotten sick - I don't think I would recommend this place to a friend, because of the poor quality of the food - there are just better options out there for a similar price. But, we had a great time, so it's still a fun place to be!

Good value; Great beach!

We spent a week there and spent most all of our time on the beach. Great surf and plenty of comfortable shade palms to lay under. Our first night room was over the Gift shop and the air conditioning unit below caused our shower window to rattle at night. Front desk manager was happy to assist in moving us to a quieter room the next morning. We were a little disappointed that all dining was buffet style. Everything else was great. The staff was all without exception friendly and welcoming. Night entertainment was ok, but c'mon it's not Vegas. Again, the people working there were very nice and overall we thought our package was a good value.

Great Service!

The resort itself was (I thought) very plain. Not a lot of flowers around. It wasn't very "showy" at all. It was very loud at one of the pools, all day long, but there was another pool that was quieter. They also had a pool that was only for special admittance (don't know what the criteria was though). The service was FANTASTIC! Every staff member was there to help and they were all very pleasant. Our room was very nice and very clean. The food was just ok. Nothing we ate was worth mentioning. The deserts were all blah, but they did have coconut ice cream which is my personal favorite, but the cones were all stale but I ate them anyway.

great all-inclusive adults only resort!

We really liked this resort. Lovely employees, we could find quiet places on the beach or at the pool, or we could find more lively stuff to do if we wanted that. If you stay in a courtyard view room, you'll hear the live show and band until about 11:30pm every night. Quieter rooms require ocean or island outer views. The food is average, but you don't go to an all inclusive place for fine dining. Drinks are strong, but don't expect your fancy drinks. They keep them pretty basic. But the resort is a lovely place... lots of options. Just go with managed expectations, and you'll have a great time, and at a really great value!

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

A palatial retreat where the mixin' and the minglin' is only with adults - no kids or crying babies at this resort.

You're located on Dominican's Macoa Beach - the mind-boggling ocean views go on for days.

Taking the introductory scuba lesson (it happens in the pool) - you'll be ready for the ocean waters in no time.

The pools are spacious - you won't bump into each other - no one wants to be that close (especially if the bathrooms are faraway).

When you're ready for your next cocktail, all you have to do is just swim on over to the bar.

Detoxing in the steam bath at the gym (all those icky work impurities will stream out of your pores).

The whirlpool bath that makes you feel like a jelly fish.

What We'd Change

The resort is large, but you really don't feel crowded and the restaurants can accommodate everyone easily and there is plenty of room at the pools.

Why You Should Go

So close to the airport you'll land and be at the resort in a flash - you want your vacay to start immediately!

The Mediterranean-style village Altos de Chavon is near - authentic architecture, swoon-worthy boutiques, cafes & more.

Also in Altos de Chavon, check the Amphitheatre for Kandela! - don't miss this Caribbean musical review.

See the lush landscapes at the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve: plants, animals, coral reef, freshwater lagoons & more.

Hone your golf skills and tune up your tennis swing - both are available near the resort.
