Dont' Sweat the Small Stuff

Riu Playa Blanca was a nice resort to stay in for our week. There were small hiccups in the service, maintenance and rhythm of the resort but otherwise it is a beautiful setting. The goods included nice pools, clean beach and rooms, friendly staff (although not many speak English), good drinks and at least every meal there was something that caught my attention and taste buds. The jet ski guys were helpful and friendly. You will feel safe while at the resort, not a lot of locals combing the beaches. As far as entertainment, we didn't stay up late due to early morning activities but we did watch them practice and it looked amazing. The small stuff included a fire alarm going off at least once or twice a day at various times (including 5:30am), the room phone was out for a whole day, lack of enough shaded areas for the amount of people and they don't quite understand handicap accessibility yet. We had to repeatedly move wet floor signs from in front of our room, the stairs and some other areas that were "handicap accessible". Otherwise, the resort is fairly flat and easy to operate a wheelchair. The resort itself is a long way from the airport so be prepared for at least 2 hours each way, depending on traffic. We felt it was worth the drive for the beauty that surrounded us each day. Overall it was an average Riu resort and we are grateful that we can enjoy other countries with the feeling of safety.

Nice place

We enjoyed our stay. There are just a couple of things I would have liked. One is a coffee maker in the room, or room service. There is a refrigerator in the24 hr sports bar with sandwiches and salads but they did not look appetizing. I would have liked a little more to choose from at 3 A.M. when we arrived. It is a 2 hour commute from Panama City to the resort which was brutal after a 4 hour flight however, once we arrived it was relaxing week. The staff is great. The food is pretty good. Particularly the steak house which was fine dining. It is a very safe and friendly environment.

riu playa blanca panama

Hotel was up to riu standards. I like that they are all similar. This one has a few more rooms than many. Rooms comfortable Beach was great and I like that they have 4 pools. 1 with the bar, 1 for children and 2 others you can swim in. Management nice and available.

I expected more

Let me start off by saying that the resort is very pretty! And if I wasn't a frequent traveler I would of probably been a lot happier. With that said when we arrived at the resort we were greated by the receptionist and then escorted to our room by the bell boy (Steve) who was extremely welcoming, he let us know where everything was located and told us we could go to him if we had any questions..after that we were pretty much on our own and ignored by mostly all workers. There were hardly any hellos or small talk (which if you are antisocial or not in the business of interacting then I'm sure you won't mind). The room was very pretty and clean however the bed was really hard. I also couldn't help that a lot of cleaning (like floor buffering) would happen during peak times, And the things to do were extremely limited, there wasn't any concierge to really assist with anything and to book tours you had to do it through an app. On our first full day there we woke up super early 6am to go to the pool and didn't get to enter the pool until close to 1pm because they were still filling the pool up. We met 2 employees who worked by the pool and they were extremely nice, they kept us company and made small talk with us and let us know that the pool would be filled soon (which was appreciated although the wait was still long). The pools were pretty clean and we stayed at the side of the pool through out our stay because although the beach sand was crystal white the water wasn't a clear as we expected. The resort also has nightly entertainment, buffet style food (which became a bit redundant after day 3). As expected the drinks were pretty weak but being that it is an all inclusive resort we didn't Mind, just keep drinking. With all of that said I believe the resort would be a great place for those who just want to go, sit by the pool or beach and read a nice book. If you are looking for anything more exciting I would look into other options.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The palm-tree studded & crystal white-sand beach that's kissed by teal waves.

The boxy, white chic look of the resort and the sleek, hip rooms. It's rock star cool.

RiuLand for kids ages 4-7 and 8-12, children's pool (with a big fun slide) and play area.

Complimentary gym with the sauna. Vacay is the time to purify.

Hanging in the Jacuzzi at the pool and letting it bubble the stress right out of your bod.

What We'd Change

Although the drive from the airport can be a little lengthy, the views of the beautiful Panamanian landscape and payoff after arriving at Riu Playa Blanca are more than worth it.

Why You Should Go

It's 93 miles from the resort (a bit of a drive), but once you get there, it's heaven.

Dive into kayaking windsurfing or the aquagym. Get wet, wild and exercisy.

Check out the snorkeling (fish ogling) and scuba lessons in the pool. Take the plunge.

You can grab a game of volley ball or table tennis, or hit the fitness center for inside sweating.

The shows, live music, disco or cocktails under the moonlight are epic.
