hated room was ok with everything else

The bad: They stuck the wife and I in a third floor room in a unit with no elevators. The stairs get awful tiresome by your fourth of fifth trip down them. Heaven forbid don't forget anything and have to go up them.. The ironic part is that the gym was directly across from our stairs about 15 feet away. Didn't use it much. The other thing is that your balcony is wide open to the skies. When it rains everyday which it did, not RIU fault, any clothes you have drying are now very wet again and the floor of the balcony is very slick when wet. My head knows very well after banging it on the balcony floor twice while there. The property restroom situation sucks. The OK. The inside of the room once I got there pant pant was allriight not special but adequate. House keeping was very good. The food is nothing special not likely you will starve but kind of all start to taste the same after a while. The pool bar which was closed four of the six days we were there and the pools themselves all leave a little to be desired.. Would like to see Jack Daniels and Crown added to their whiskey section. The good: The beach is very nice and is easy access to the water. The staff you deal with on a daily basis are overall very friendly and accommodating met a lot of nice people working there. Because of my room situation I will never return to this property

Not what I expected

I thought the Riu Palace was a step above the other Riu resorts. I had stayed at the Riu Palace in Montego Bay and was so impressed by the modern aesthetics and the service, that I booked a trip less than 6 moths later to the Riu Tropical in Negril. Boy was I wrong! The resort has a very outdated look. The pool had a lot of mildew and dirt on the tiles. The room was a little outdated. And the majority of music played was music from the US. I wanted to have more of a Jamaican island feel and I felt like I was at a party in the US every day. A little too commercialized for me and I will stay in one of the local smaller hotels on the 7 mile stretch next time.

What's to Love

All-inclusive everything: the cocktails, the grub, the utter awesomeness of it all.

The stunning beach with ivory, soft sands hugged by the bluest of tranquil, dreamy water.

Melting at the luscious spa, where the massages and facials transport you to Nirvana.

The outrageously delish, lip-smackin' Jamaican BBQ you can nosh on while chillaxing by the ocean.

The Victorian-style buildings bathed in happy, soft pink, which cause instant happiness.

The liquor dispenser in your room. Your hour of happy can start any time of day.

24-hour room service - if you've got a hankering for grub at 3:15 a.m., you can get it. For realz.

The bonfire and DJ on the beach - you'll feel like you're in a movie.

What We'd Change

Making reservations for the a la carte restaurants is tedious, but with a little patience and perseverance, the fantastic food at dinner is a highlight of the day.

Why You Should Go

The airport is a little over an hour from the resort, but once you get there you'll never want to leave.

You can hang out at the sister resort, which includes free access & drinks at the disco, Pacha. Woot!

There are oceans of activities for the kiddos, and even a children's playground where you can have some sandy fun.

Must-dos: Rhodes Hall Plantation for horseback riding & Roaring River for swimming in a fresh water sinkhole.

Don't miss bodyboarding, sail boats, snorkeling and/or for a fee scuba and jet skiing. Dive in.

On land, there's water polo and volleyball in the pool for your splish-splashing pleasure.

On the way home, plant yourself in Club MoBay at the airport for grub and A/C. It's so worth it.
