Riu Palace Riviera Maya

Beautiful property and lovely beach. Loved not having to fight for pool chairs and always having a place to relax. Staff certainly works hard and does their best. Nice job with the pool activities. Great location...easy to get into town. We did feel the hotel is a bit run down and could use some renovating. Workout room is old and equipment is squeaky. Food was very good for the amount of people being served, yet would have been nice to have more options during the day and for room service. Housekeeping started days too early by knocking on doors. Sheets are old and bally. Need to be replaced. Sports Bar is stale and old. Need to freshen up with some nicer food options to encourage using the room. Could use a Concierge Service to help guests new to the area.

Nicely Groomed Beach

Beach was really nice. There were a few cheap jewelry peddlers but their behavior was not "naggy". The restaurants were OK, but the buffet was good enough. We stayed for 5 nights, and did the restaurants 3 of the 5 nights. The Japanese restaurant was not a Teppan table and the food was too salty. Steak restaurant Chili's was good, and Mexican restaurant was OK, but the same food was available at the buffet restaurant without the wait. Our check in and check out went quick and without a hitch (this time). We booked 2 rooms; One for adults, and one for our older children. Both our rooms on the second floor had a musty smell when we first entered, which took about a day with the AC blasting to get rid of. Our rooms were clean, and the minibars were fully stocked every day. There was some form of live entertainment every day. There was a small program for children, but not much. There were activities going on around the pool, but we hung out on the beach where it is quieter. There's plenty of water sports available, but must say, there were some hard drug deals that went down with the people that had the jet skis- they had red shirts on.

Week At Riu Palace Riviera Maya

We ended up here after reading reviews to spend a week with our family. There are a lot of positives. Overall we thought the food was very good for an all inclusive. The buffet's had a huge selection (e.g. plenty of different types of shrimp) and we were easily able to find things that we liked and thought were tasty. The deserts there were fair, stuck with the ice cream with many options for toppings. Breakfast was often the omelet station, but also many options. But I could never figure out what to put the chocolate whip cream on. At the different restaurants, we liked the Japanese the least, the Mexican in the middle and the Crystal one the best (we didn't try it but heard the sea bass there was okay. In all the beef often was the best entree. In the Mexican, some liked the fajhitas and other's not so much. The best desert was the chocolate pyramid at the Mexican if you love dark chocolate. Spent more time at the beach, which is less noisy. Beach chairs less comfortable than the pool chairs. The pool is nice but often noisy with games on the loud speaker but there was plenty of activities and prizes. You can take out a catamaran as part of the all inclusive unless it is too windy or rough, then you need to pay for an instructor to go with you. It is a pretty setting. The least favorite part were the rooms but spent little time there. They are a little dated and darker. There are stairs down to the sitting area and TV (could lead to a fall at night). Not enough lighting there and limited plugs for devices. Suggest you bring a three outlet adapter for the 110v outlets for extra spaces. At night they had shows, overall they were fair thought they put a lot of effort in them. At least one show was hilarious. Lastly the drinks were plentyful, The mixed drinks were good but alcohol didn't seem to have much a kick. Beer was Dos Equis, and a small selection of wine, no pino noir at all. Staff was great, very helpful and nice almost entirely.

Good Minivacation

Bought the airport to resort transfers through Amstar. We got there and back without a hitch (this time). We got to the resort, check in and out went relatively quickly. Upon entering the room, there was a strong musty/mildewy smell, we cranked the AC in the 2 rooms and it took about a day for the smell to go away. The room was always restocked with beer, sodas, and a variety of hard liquors as well (not top shelf). - The beach was well groomed, no sharp rocks to step on in the water, and an adequate amount of chaise lounges on the beach (we can not give much comment on the pool area- we avoid it because there's too many drunks, and there's loud activities with overly perky MCs, my youngest son (16) swam in the pool early in the morning to train (he's a competitive swimmer, so he put in about 4000 yards/day) and said it was clean and not over chlorinated - our family just goes for cocktails (us and our 2 older kids- drinking age in Mexico is 18) on the beach and long swims in the warm ocean- the surf is pretty mild compared to the Pacific (Riviera Nayarit area)- there's a strong rip current, but not a strong undertow, and waves no bigger than 3 feet. There were quite a few cheap jewelry vendors on the beach, but they didn't nag you excessively. There's parasailing, kitesurfing, parachuting, sailing, scuba, snorkeling, flyboarding, and (jetskis which also had a few of their workers doing some coke deals on the side- they had red shirts on) available at/close to beach. 3 of 5 people in our party got a one day stomach bug- we did not drink the tap water and ate different things so we can't pinpoint anything specific that we ate that ugh- gave us the runs. One thing that was not an issue for us because our kids are 16,18,and 20; was things to do for small children. There were a few organized activities, but not much- so don't expect to dump your small children off somewhere to be entertained- not going to happen. There were a lot of kids there, and they seemed bored, and luckily they hung by the pool and went on a lot of excursions- most go to Xcaret and take the boat to Cozumel and snorkel/dive. There's live music that starts around 8:30, and sometimes a show. There's different restaurants, but we thought the buffet (Don Monolo's) had the best selection. The Japanese restaurant was not a tepanyaki table and the food was too salty, the Mexican restaurant was OK, but not great, and same food was available at buffet, the steak place (Chili's was pretty good- food tasted good, but I got sick the following day, so not sure if that was the source). There's a sports bar near front reception desk that's open 24 hours that has snacks if you have a late arrival/early departure (it could use some AC- it was hot- and you need pesos for the 2 pool tables and foosball- the bartender will make change), and room service with sandwiches, and snacks. The breakfast buffet was always good, and lunch buffet at Chili's was good. There's also a grill at the beach for awhile, but get there before the seagulls do- this resort did not have a lot of coaties (Mexican raccoons)- I saw a few at night, but the beach grill area wasn't overrun with them like other resorts we've been too. Overall good vacation 6 days/5 nights for adults and older children. I would not recommend for young children.

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

Finding your perch on Cancun's white sandy shores with turquoise waves rolling in and sweet sunshine for days.

Toasting with a fun, fruity cocktail on the terrace. You'll feel like you've arrived, beach lovers.

Hitting the main pool and zeroing in on the main hub of activity - the swim-up bar. It does not disappoint.

If you are struck by the late-night munchies, 24-hour room service will deliver straight to your room.

What We'd Change

Guys - pack some long pants for dining at night at the a la carte restaurants.

Why You Should Go

You're a short five minutes from the delicious Playa del Carmen - beaches, golf, watersports and shopping.

Dining at Chilis - the resorts steak and lobster restaurant, which is muy bueno.

You can hit all the Riu bars in Playacar. Go ahead - taste test all the tequilas. You're on vacay.

RiuLand is where the kiddos can play & craft the day away while you melt into stress- extraction at the spa.

If you're up exploring, the Mayan ruins and the Sian Ka'an reserve should top your list.

Riu's fab entertainment team is ready to perform - live music in the day and Broadway-esque at night.
