Disappointing visit

-Air Travel was excessively long -room had a bad smell; not musty but more like sewage -food was not as good as previous visits but wait staff very accommodating -pool was nice but staff a bit inappropriate -drinks were strong and easily available -beach well maintained and close to hotel -all day catamaran excursion was a bit too long; would recommend half day instead

Pros & Cons

Arrived around 9:30pm and 3 of us had to check in for our rooms. By the time we were finished we couldn't eat dinner at any restaurants since they all close at 10:00pm. Our only options were the sports bar which only offers cold refrigerated sandwiches or salads, none of which looked appetizing at all, or room service which has a very limited menu. We ordered several items to our room since they wouldn't accommodate our request to deliver them to the common areas and the food was not very good. Immediately upon getting to our rooms, we were all overwhelmed at the musty, mildew smell that immediately hits you when you walk in. 2 of the 3 rooms were extremely warm and after complaining about it their so-called fix made no difference. Add to that, their evening shows are extremely LOUD and can be heard throughout the entire resort and rooms. We tried sitting thru shows 2 nights and had to leave due to the ear piercing screaming from the "MC" and loud music, it was unbearable!. The best dining option is the buffet restaurant which offers breakfast and dinner. Every meal at the buffet was excellent. The pool side restaurant offering lunch is fantastic too. The pool "entertainment" is hosted by the same MC that does the evening shows. Unfortunately he feels that screaming makes him more entertaining which is obviously the contrary. He is OBNOXIOUS !!! We spent time at the pool and beach and kept moving around to get away from the loud, ridiculous screaming. Also, the hotel will only allow you to use 1 towel and you must leave them your towel card to check out a towel. So, if you want a towel for your chair and another to dry off, not happening!!!! This is bad customer service and extremely annoying. The process is all manually tracked and if you don't return your key back by 6pm, you're in trouble..... Good luck trying to get a towel the next day or checking out of the hotel. The hotel's location is great and the beach is beautiful. It's within walking distance to downtown Playa Del Carmen and in a great area. The hotel is in desperate need of a design make over though. As soon as you walk in, the décor screams of Liberace, the deceased pianist that was known for his gaudy nouveau riche style with little taste. If the hotel was updated with more current or typical, local décor, it would make a huge difference. As far as service, the hotel's front-desk staff seems completely incompetent with no ability to make a decision that assists their guests. Most had attitudes and seemed like they didn't want to be there. As far as the wait staff in the restaurants and pool, they were all fantastic and hustling. The hotel has all interior halls and room entrances which is not typical for the area. The halls also need updating and are very "blah". You don't feel like you're on the beach. The hotel rooms offer absolutely NO beach view. We were told that they didn't have any rooms at all offering a view. If you are a well-traveled person who expects great service and good, clean comfortable accommodations, this is not the place for you. This hotel is more for a college student or younger person that doesn't have standards and just wants a good time. If you have certain expectations for your hotel, service and entertainment, stay away... We travel to the Caribbean and/or Mexico annually and would not stay at this resort again, nor recommend it.

Beautiful beach and grounds

Stayed at a different resort last spring, which was beautiful. Just returned from Riu Palace, booked a fall trip, stayed nearly double the days/nights as the previous trip, phenomenal value. Beaches and grounds at Riu Palace are extraordinary. White sand, palm trees, view of Cozumel in the distance. The service was outstanding, on the beach, at the pool bar and all bars and restaurants. I'd highly recommend this resort to family and friends. One area for improvement, hotel room a/c shuts off if the balcony door isn't properly closed. Balcony door was difficult to close, in need of repair. Aside from that very minor issue, impressed with all aspects of this resort.

Needs a remodel

I have been bringing my family every year to the Riu Palace Rivera Maya since it opened. This year, however, it definitely showed its age. They would benefit from a remodel, however, it appears that all the Riu Hotels that do remodel are going for a very modern and cold NYC style of glamor. I would hate for this Hotel to change from the grand opulent elegance that they are known for. This would be a shame. Aside from the place needing repairs, it is a great value. I have a severe allergy to mold and mildew and my room caused me to take a trip to the local hospital for treatment despite traveling with my steroids and other medications. I planned in advance to combat the musty environment, yet this year I couldn't combat the problem. This is now the 2nd trip I have had to their hospital, and both trips were very pleasant. The beaches are beautiful and there was no seaweed. However, Riu should rake their beach front daily to clean up debris from their palms and garbage from their guests. Walking barefoot can be painful until you reach the public portion of the beach. The food is just ok. I do like the variety. You no longer need a reservation to dine in their specialty restaurants, which is nice. Make sure you exchange your money at the airport for the best exchange rate. The local shops and hotels will NEVER give you what your money is worth if you pay in American Dollars, and further, they only make change in Mexican Pesos, thus further short changing you.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

Finding your perch on Cancun's white sandy shores with turquoise waves rolling in and sweet sunshine for days.

Toasting with a fun, fruity cocktail on the terrace. You'll feel like you've arrived, beach lovers.

Hitting the main pool and zeroing in on the main hub of activity - the swim-up bar. It does not disappoint.

RiuFit has all kinds of ways to get your burn on - backfit, aquagym, stretching and bums-legs-tums.

If you are struck by the late-night munchies, 24-hour room service will deliver straight to your room.

Striking up friendly competition with a few rounds of ping pong, volleyball or tennis (lit for night play.)

What We'd Change

Guys - pack some long pants for dining at night at the a la carte restaurants.

Why You Should Go

You're a short five minutes from the delicious Playa del Carmen - beaches, golf, watersports and shopping.

Dining at Chilis - the resorts steak and lobster restaurant, which is muy bueno.

You can hit all the Riu bars in Playacar. Go ahead - taste test all the tequilas. You're on vacay.

RiuLand is where the kiddos can play & craft the day away while you melt into stress- extraction at the spa.

If you're up exploring, the Mayan ruins and the Sian Ka'an reserve should top your list.

Riu's fab entertainment team is ready to perform - live music in the day and Broadway-esque at night.
