Good property with some room for improvement

The Riu Palace St Martin was overall a pretty nice property. The grounds were relatively well kept (as others mention, there's an issue with cigarette butts). The grounds are very pretty and you get some good walking in as you move about. There are giant iguanas everywhere and a host of other lizards zipping around. All the staff say the iguanas are scared of us, but two ran after our group, and we witnessed one chase another guest up onto a patio chair. Some of these iguanas are probably 4' long. The buffet has to be the best buffet food I've had, and I like all inclusive resorts. I also lived in Las Vegas (the land of casino buffets). They have people cooking fresh food right there, so you can't go wrong. Definitely a great place to enjoy breakfast and lunch - with a beautiful view. Now for the rest of the dining... terrible. The "fusion" restaurant Krystal was the biggest joke I've ever been to. They don't accept reservations and seating is extremely limited. There wasn't even anyone we could talk to at the restaurant to inquire the process. We waited in line for 1 hour 45 minutes (it's very hot!). We finally get seated after 8:00 (they close at 9:00). The staff rushed us through so they could close, and the food was terrible. This is also the restaurant that requires you to dress up and for men to wear slacks. Don't bother - it isn't worth it. The steakhouse and French were not much better, although there was no wait. Room service really needs to up their game. They ONLY serve cold food.... nothing hot, ever. If you order nachos, be prepared for a cold lump of canned cheese sauce and stale chips, because that's what's coming. The first couple of days we would order wine to our room (note, only by the glass, they won't allow you to order a bottle). One evening we ordered wine and they just never brought it. After that, we walked to Calypso to get. Calypso is a fun little bar nightclub type with nighttime activities. The guys working there are awesome - Frandy, Laurent, and another gentleman who's name is escaping me. The service here was also hit or miss. There were some fantastic people, some just whatever, and some rude. Alfred at the pool was very nice, as were Anna Marie and Alexander. The bartenders mentioned above.. Hotel wifi - you have good access throughout the property, so that is nice. Beware that it is not a secure connection. I logged on to my online banking via the wifi and the next day my account was hacked. Valuable lesson, if you're in a foreign country, don't log onto your banking through wifi unless you know it's secure. As some have mentioned the beach is a bit small but the water is nice and pretty. It's a cove so there are no waves. I wish the smokers wouldn't drop their butts - very gross walking on the sand and stepping on a nasty cigarette butt. It's disrespectful to the environment and the other guests. Lastly, there are no beach view rooms. We paid to upgrade to a superior marina view room. It looks out over a small marina that is overall unimpressive. The room had a king bed and a pullout, and a spacious bath. Neither the sink nor the tub plugged, so washing swimwear was hard. The rooms are in need of an update.

Not impressed with this riu in St martin

I have been to other riu's ,this one is not on the top of our list.when we first got there to check in it was chaos, went to lobby bar to get thier special drink of the day the bartender got half way through making it said o I don't have any Myers to finish.plus they were constantly out of what we wanted to drink, only one kind of beer at all the bars.outside maintenance was not the best.I was not in beach attire and was turned away from the dinning buffet.asked other guests what they thought they also said this riu's was thier least favorite.

not what i expected

What can i say ... i definitely expected more from Riu Palace Resort. The resort needs major renovations Rooms: 1. smell of mold gave me major migraine 2. bed covers need to be washed after every guest 3. carpets very dirty 4. shower is very strange to say the least. glass door only covers half of the tub, and because of it water from the shower goes all over the floor Cleaning Service: I asked the cleaning lady for extra shampoo, as it was 3 females staying in the room, and she gave me one only. the following day i asked for two more (we all have long hair)- she gives me one and says "i already gave you one extra yesterday." really? little stingy on travel size shampoo huh Pool: twice i witnessed local iguana use the pool as its own bathroom. and neither of those times did i see any of the staff clean the pool Entertainment not sure if i'd call it entertainment and definitely not kid friendly. two nights in a row i had to leave and entertain my kids myself. Food: mediocre Last but not least .... the resort is very secluded and located pretty far from everything. I would have given this resort 1 Palm tree, but because of the young lady at the front desk (forgot her name... believe it starts with D) i'll give 2 Palm Trees. I most definitely expected more from Riu Palace.

AMAZING

I went on this trip alone and I had an amazing time. I would suggest getting the transportation but a lot of folks rented cars to maneuver through the island. The people are so nice and friendly, always willing to accommodate. My room was nice and very clean. This resort is for folks who want to relax, not a resort for partying. I got the opportunity to travel throughout the French and Dutch side. Dutch side is more American tourist and the French side is more country. Overall the island is beautiful. All the staff members are amazing I recommend Flor, Richard, Erica, Julio, Brandon, ugh so many staff members with great personalities. The food was okay not bad just have to be selective on what to eat based on the things you like. The entertainment wasn't all that good but after the schedule entertainments at night the Dj played awesome music...so many people were dancing. I personally did not do the excursions but I met people who did and they said it was fun. I would deff recommend this resort to anyone want to relax and just enjoy the beach. I Can't wait to book again in August or April 2018. Thank you Cheap Caribbean for such an awesome experience.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

It's a swanky destination in a Caribbean fav. St Martin is oooo la la chic.

Riu sits on the jaw-dropping Anse Marcel Beach - this crescent-shaped beach dazzles in white and blue.

The paths around the resort are perfect for daytime, afternoon and evening strolls.

Staying in and dining on the balcony is always a fav - 24-hour room service lets you dine at all hours.

Got the kiddos? Perfect. Let them have their own fun at the kid's club. You get much needed spa time.

What We'd Change

Some say it's a bit isolated, but we think it's the perfect escape. If you want to see the island, you may want to rent a car.

Why You Should Go

Nestled on the French side of St Martin. The 45-minute drive from the airport is worth the tres awe-mazing views.

It's a vibrant yachting destination - carve out some time to ogle at the chic boats in the marina.

There's live music at the resort a few times a week. Get your cocktail and enjoy the local sounds of the island.

The Iguana's by the pool are harmless picture-worthy creatures and add to the natural landscape.

Nature reserves are near the resort - hiking the trails and snorkeling the bright blue seas is a must.
