Pleasantly Surprised

Spent seven nights at this resort the first week of October 2016. I chose it because a colleague had stayed there last year and said while the place had it's flaws, they would return so that was good enough for me to try it. Things got off to a rough start as Delta somehow didn't manage to get my luggage onto the plane, which was a direct non-stop flight from Atlanta and was delayed departing for almost two hours. Fortunately, I'd packed flip flops, swimming trunks and a tshirt in my carry on so I was good to go, all be it a little apprehensive until my luggage was delivered late Sunday afternoon some 24 plus hours later. We purchased the private shuttle service and an air conditioned van was waiting for us at the airport. After a 25 minute ride to the resort we were ready to check in. The desk clerk was very friendly and I asked if there was a chance we could upgrade from our Junior Suite. He handed me two separate room keys and told us to go look at the rooms and pick the one we wanted, which was kind of cool. I was still sort of rattled about my lost luggage so check in was sort of a blur but as someone stated the door locks are old fashioned keys, which isn't a problem. They also give you a key and lock to the safe. The desk clerk called Delta to let them know my room number and we got our bags to the room (minus mine) and then went to check out the resort and find some food. The lobby is expansive and sort of decorated like a cruise ship. There is no air conditioning in the lobby so it is always very humid in there and the bar area just off the lobby. But, everything is clean in the lobby, bar and restrooms and it's the only place you can consistently get on the WiFi so you'll see a lot of people there utilizing the internet service. I could sporadically get on WiFi in the room but only for five minutes or so at a time. We made our way to La Altagracia for some late lunch as it was about 3pm by this time and we were famished. This is the buffet that is off to the left side of the pool and closest to the beach. It's an open air buffet. By the time we got there the selection of food wasn't great and most of it had been out for quite some time. The salad bar didn't look appealing at all nor did the fruit. We opted for hotdogs but couldn't eat the buns since they were so hard. Later in the week we realized the key to getting good food at the buffet at La Altagracia is to get there right when the lunch buffet starts and the food is fresh and hot. It wasn't a problem for the rest of the week. Once we were back in the room we received a call from the Amstar rep in the lobby welcoming us and asking to meet with us. We went down to arrange our shuttle back to the airport the following Saturday and to see if he could assist with the lost luggage. A couple of phone calls later and he assured me it would be delivered on Sunday. Then he proceeded to try to sell us an excursion, and gave us some tips about the resort and so forth. I explained that we didn't have beaches in Indiana or Kentucky and our plan was to strictly be beach bums with cold drinks every single day. He continued to pressure us to purchase an excursion and we told him we'd look over the brochure and if we decided we'd let him know. He was not able to verify our flight or shuttle back the following Saturday due to having an inaccurate print out and told me to check back with him on Friday. We decided we did not want an excursion and when I went back to check with him on Friday about our return shuttle he was not very friendly and rather short with me. His phone froze, supposedly, and he was not able to get me the info so I had to plan to come back AGAIN later that day. The second time five hours later he was still not very friendly about it all and shouted at me that my return ride would be arriving at 940am. He was by far the rudest person we encountered. The hotel staff is amazing. Service goes a long way and the housekeeping staff, front desk staff, room service staff and waiters all do an excellent job. Tip them well to start with and they take good care of you for the whole week. We left them all generous tips at the end of the week as well. Don Manuel restaurant is the main buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We found the variety to be adequate and most of the food to be good. Deriche was our waiter for the entire week and he is outstanding. Ask for him when you go the first time. He will not disappoint you. The only other restaurant we ate at was the La Bodega and it was disappointing in terms of the amount and quality of the food offered. We enjoyed Don Manuel so much that we ate there every evening besides one. The pool is nice, but could be cleaned a bit more often. The beach is simply incredible with the palm trees and the beach service is adequate. Towels are provided. The down side: We both got a stomach bug at the end of our trip. We didn't ingest the water..and it was not food poisoning as I contracted the bug first and my fiancé had it 24 hours later. It was a damper for sure on our trip that we'd planned for seven months to spend the last two days in the room..but that's no fault of the resort at all. If you're a snorkeling fan, this is not a resort for you because the water (Atlantic) is fairly rough most of the time. There are excursions you can take, but if you like snorkeling from the shore then Punta Cana is not the place to go. Overall, I was very impressed with the cleanliness, the landscaping is immaculate and the staff is very friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone, just don't go with five star expectations. Go with three star expectations and you're expectations will be met and likely exceeded.

40th bday celebration

This is my third Riu stay this year and it was the least favorite on my list. There isn't enough entertainment the food choices aren't the best but it's definitely edible. Hotel needs renovation.

Punta Cana sun

Overall the hotel is nice. The beaches are great, sandy and warm water. The food is okay at best. The steakhouse is the best of the restaurants. The buffet is second best, and the other specialty restaurants are not so good. The service by the bars and restaurants are really good. Especially Kevin and Sandy .
