Good Atmosphere/ Poor food and drinks

The resort was absolutely beautiful and well maintained! The staff was very kind, gracious and helpful. Their restaurants and displays of food was beautiful. However, despite the grand presentation the food was not good! It could be improved by using American products. All of the bread was very hard, desserts were not sweet enough, salad dressings and ketchup were peculiar in taste. Out of all the restaurants on site, good food was very slim. Even a hamburger at the grill tasted bad!. One night they had a BBQ and the food was better on this night. The Alcohol was generic and the mixes for frozen drinks were horrible. The only beer available is Presidente draft. The wine provided is made on the island in three flavors and they all tasted horrible. I just kept ordering every drink trying to find one that tasted well and there was not one! They mix their drinks with Pepsi products and not Coca Cola. The entertainment was very good and they have great activity directors! If they could get quality food and good alcohol and mixes, this would be a prime resort!

Really nice resort

This is a really nice resort. I didn't give them 5 palm trees because, the room we were in had a musty smell, and everything felt damp. Wish it had an out door grill for in between meals . If you wanted something to eat like a snack, you could get something and microwave it. Not to tropical . But the dinners made up for it. The steakhouse had all you can eat lobster tails, The food at this steakhouse was absolutely amazing . Champagne by bottle or about the glass. The resort director had a invitation dinner the second night we were there. And it was outstanding . The beach was beautiful, sand smooth as silk . And the resort was not too crowded . Loved our stay there. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Resort is really beautiful. Please visit. You will not be dispointed.

Never again

We never write review before, but we felt like we have to share our experience with everyone, who like to take the opportunity and discover beautiful Punta Cana. This was our second trip to Dominican Republic, we loved the beautiful turquoise beaches. I don't recommend Riu Palace even to my worst enemy. We buy the seven days all inclusive, package. If I don't have to pay, penalty for leaving the resort, we do it in a heartbeat, the third day. When we arrived to our room, the smell was so horrible from the mold, we are not a complainer type, but we ask the front desk to switch our room, we pay $160.00 , as a special, so we can have a much nicer view, and a much better suite. They sprayed something like air freshener, so we take the room. After a couple of hours off course the smell was back, we ask our fellow neighbors, if they experience the smell, everybody was complaining about that. Horrible mold smell, your clothing, your hair everything smell like mold, plus we are still cuffing after a week . After unpacking our luggage, we like to enjoy the pool, when we get there, our kids already jumped in, to something filthy, dirty ,cloudy water. We watched people drinking in the bar for hours and never get out to the bathroom. Little kids, used the pool, next to drunk crowd, where almost everyone SMOKES, in the pool. SMOKING is aloud everywhere, even in the dining area, (I don't think, we been traveling every year, )we see something like this, anywhere else. Kids eating at one table, and people smoking next to them, nobody cares if they're bother anybody. Disappointed. We went to use the pool, the next resort so at least we can enjoy our vacation. The people who's working at this resort Riu Palace, don't speak English, we try to asking certain things, they have absolutely no ideas, what you talk about. Took us 5 days, to explain coffee creamer, with the cleaning lady. We always tipped, everybody even we hated the place. The waiter always looks for you, when we went dining, he makes us sit down to the table, where he worked, it was uncomfortable, and the wine what they served, was the worst ever we tasted. And they have only one red and one white vine , no choice on any kind of drinks, they serve the cheapest , every drink tastes BAD. This resort need a major remodeling, its so out dated. Not worth any money, don't choose this, there are better resorts , do your search. Like we said, I never write reviews before, but we where so mad the whole time, I wish we can leave earlier, but that was not an option.

Very Disappointing

This was our third time in Punta Cana and second time staying at a Riu Palace. We were sadly disappointed in the Riu Palace Punta Cana and wished that we had booked the hotel we had stayed in during our first two trips to Punta Cana . Although we loved that hotel, we thought it might be fun to try something different, and given our good experience with the Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun, we thought that the Riu Palace Punta Cana would be a good choice. Sadly, this was not the case. This hotel/resort should not be offered by Cheap Caribbean. It is not up to Cheap Caribbean’s standards and is over-priced for the poor quality and poor service. The Riu Palace Punta Cana is very much in need of a major renovation. The grounds and lobby were pretty but the pool and rooms were out-dated, shabby, and practically falling apart in spots including missing and broken tiles in the pool, stained and worn sofa and rug in the sitting area of the room, and very chipped paint on the chairs and tables in the main outdoor space, to name a few. The service was poor, overall, although some of the staff members were very helpful, gracious and friendly. Service: Check-in should set the tone for your vacation, and our check-in set the tone that we were a bother to the staff and they didn’t really care. We waited a good five minutes as a man spoke on the phone and two other staff members ignored us. Finally, a woman asked if we were checking in (she seemed to be working the check-out side of the desk and thus could not help us). She said something to the man on the phone (we couldn’t understand what she said, as we don’t speak Spanish but it seemed as if she was telling him he had a guest to check in). He hung up the phone and proceeded to check us in, although the entire time he very distracted, and was looking all around and past us, as if looking for someone to show up (maybe his shift was over and he was looking for his replacement?). He gave us our key and when we asked if our daughter and her boyfriend who were checking in later could be near us, he said he wasn’t sure if he could make that arrangement but he would check and we should come back later. After we went to our room and got settled, we came back down to see if he had made the arrangement. He was gone. We asked another man at the desk, and he seemed annoyed at our request, but said to ask him again when our daughter checked in and he would try to get a room close-by. When she checked in, she was given a room on the same floor and close enough to us, so we were satisfied. A small thing—other people who checked in right after us were greeted by a staff member and were given welcome beverages. We were not, nor were our daughter and her boyfriend. We didn’t care about the beverages, but saying hello would have been a nice courtesy. Service throughout the rest of the trip was inconsistent but mostly poor. Some of the waiters at the pool, beach and restaurants were helpful, friendly and accommodating, but there were plenty who were unfriendly and appeared unhappy, as if you were a bother to them or they were doing you a favor or they didn’t want to be working there. We are very appreciative of people in the service industry and we always tip even when it’s all inclusive, but that didn’t seem to make a difference at this resort. Small but nice service practices and amenities that we have experienced at other hotels/resorts were not in practice here, such as being shown around the resort and the room, asking if you need anything, checking in on you, having bathrobes in the room, etc. Room: Our bathroom was very clean, and the housekeepers worked very hard every day to change sheets and towels, tidy up, and turn down the bed in the evening. There was no mold in the shower as some people have complained of, but there was some mold on the box spring and the curtains. A little mold is to be expected in a humid climate so this didn’t bother me too much. There were a ton of ants in the bathroom, which can also occur with humidity, but the response to my request to please spray for them seemed to be ignored, as the ants were there every day. The room itself was very shabby in regard to worn, dirty-appearing rug and sofa (which I covered with towels rather than sit on directly), worn box spring, threadbare sheets, and a bedspread that looked like it was previously a curtain and not made for a bed. It was a very thin, shiny, gold-colored material, and not the same bedspread as was on our daughter’s bed or on the beds that we could see when doors were open in other rooms. There was a worn, old and not very clean looking blanket in the closet that we did not use even though the thin sheets were not warm enough with the cold, damp air. The air-conditioning was adequate to cool the room, but not take out the humidity. Thus, the room was always cold and damp. We opened the door to the balcony to get fresh air but that brought in more humidity, causing our clothes to get damp and smelly. Our room also smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, but we decided not to complain because we were concerned about getting a room near us for our daughter and we had asked about the ants. We didn’t want to make too many requests or complaints in the first five minutes! I do have to say, though, that the bed was very comfortable. I like a very firm bed so I was happy. I’ve read other complaints though from some people that the beds are too firm. That’s a matter of personal preference, though. Grounds and Pool: The grounds were pretty and were kept nicely cleaned and manicured. The beach was nice. The pool had broken and missing tiles and quite honestly was too small for the number of people crammed into it, especially near the swim up bar. I wouldn’t go in, as it just seemed gross. The water was murky from all of the sunscreen and with the bathroom being far away from the pool, I’m not so sure that people weren’t just peeing in the pool with all of the alcohol that was consumed! The waiters were great at coming around for drink orders at the beach as well as the pool.On a downside, there was cigarette smoke everywhere... at the pool, beach, restaurants, etc. Terrible! Food: The food was pretty good in the main buffets (but not as good as the food at the Riu Palace in Cancun) and pretty terrible in the “Fusion restaurant” and the “Brazilian restaurant” (overcooked as well as appearing and tasting like it had been pre-cooked and sitting around for awhile). We had a steak in the grill restaurant (actually, the buffet area near the beach, which became a sit down “grill restaurant” at night) which was surprisingly very tasty and cooked medium rare as we had requested. We also had a grilled Caribbean lobster that night, which was mushy and mealy in texture. We recently had Caribbean lobster in the Bahamas that had a firmer texture, so this may have been the result of it either being frozen and/or overcooked. With lots of butter, it had good flavor, though! The fresh fruit was always good on the buffet, as were the breads, charcuterie, cheeses, and Dominican Specialties. My main concern about the buffets , however, was that the food did not seem to be consistently replenished and the serving areas were not always kept clean. If you tended to eat on the later side (after 9 for breakfast, 1 for lunch, 8 for dinner) the buffets were picked over and very messy. Cheap Caribbean: After the first night, I called Cheap Caribbean and asked about the possibility of moving to another hotel given my unhappiness with the general state of shabbiness, the inconsistent service, poor hospitality, and overall vibe that they just didn’t care at the RIU Palace Punta Cana. After being on hold for over 25 minutes on three occasions (I hung up the first two times, getting tired of waiting), I finally got through and was told that Cheap Caribbean would have to check with Riu to see if they would waive the early departure fee and that someone would get back to me the next day. We wanted to move right away. I was told that wouldn’t happen, but we should be able to move for the last two nights of the four nights we had booked. I did not get a call back from Cheap Caribbean until the afternoon of our next to last day. At this point, we did not want to move just for one night, and waste the afternoon packing and moving. However, moving was no longer an option even if we wanted to move for one night since Cheap Caribbean had not heard back from Riu about the waiver of the early departure fee. (I did not request a waiver of this fee, and was not givne the option to simply pay it.) I was very disappointed in the difficulty reaching Cheap Caribbean (they said they were backed up due to problems with Delta) and in Cheap Caribbean’s delay in calling me back. Even if they couldn’t make the move happen, they could have called when they said they would to keep me informed of the process. I was told by the Cheap Caribbean agent that the RIU is notoriously difficult in these situations. If that’s the case, why have their hotel as an option on your website? I was offered a $100 voucher for future travel but only after I asked if one was available. I have been very happy with Cheap Caribbean in the past, but was very disappointed this time in the quality of the hotel and the slow and inadequate response to my concerns.
