Amstar representative Mr.Jose was very professional. Buffet was below Riu standard, foods stale, mushy, not fresh and not labeled. Lost my wallet from room in 3hrs window that I was out of the room. Reception service was lousy. When reported about lost wallet they seemed less interested to hear or do anything. Rooms below Riu standard, needs update. Overall ok not what I expected after staying at Riu palace in Las Cabos.

Riu palace

The grounds were pretty but the rooms were FILTHY and uncomfortable. Our group of 10 ALL got diarhea mostly likely from the water. Service at the restaurants was inconsistent but the buffet was decent. Wouldn't go back

The hotel cannot be called 5 stars

Hello Travellers, First of all, I would like to say if it is your fist time on the Caribbean side, you might like it. If people already had an experience from Mexico or Aruba, you might be surprised or disappointed. This was our 6th Caribbean vacation but first visit to Dominican Republic. From the beginning, after landing we went out to get to our transfer just to find that somehow our family was not on the list. Eventhough we did get to the bus, since the rep of Amstar confirmed we are on the list with the office, the bus was really packed up and people had to share sitting space. Plus, the A.C. was leaking on my wife and the driver could not care less. Did look grumpy all the way to the hotel. Once we arrived at the Riu Palace Punta Cana hotel we were surprised to find that our room has one queen bed and a futon instead of 2 double beds. At the reception person offered us an upgrade for money, which we were not appose to, just to find that the room he offered was no different from we already had. The only difference was instead of queen there was two mattresses put together making an illusion of a king bed, but still second bed was a fold out futon. Running in between 3 rooms we got tired and finally a manager made a solution for us, which what we paid from the beginning, by putting an extra mattress in our room. Anyway, the sleeping places were settled. Keys to the rooms are actual keys, not cards, key to the safe is the lock with the key, which did look questionable as far as safety, but nothing got stolen or else. The bathroom door had a damage on the trim, so wasn't able to lock. The hotel itself was a beautiful place, probably years ago. Now you can still see some of the expensive decor, but everything is chipped, stained, cracked, smells and rusted. Well, not to be picky, we still thought make a best out of it, because we were not planning on staying just at the hotel all the time. Food was ok, we were not wowed but ok, and since there was lots of variety there was always something to choose from. Almost all the plates cracked or chipped. You will not find a good guacamole or salsa there. But, it is ok, it is not Mexico after all. Most of the meat was very dry and tastless. Alcohol cocktails were very questionable in a taste, so we just stick with a champagne and beer, red wine wasn't too bad. Website said you need to make a reservation for the restaurants, which is not true, you just had to show up at the opening, otherwise had to wait 40-45 min. Anyway, most of the times buffet had a better variety of food. Ready to hear something good? :) Kids liked pizza, pasta and pastries. Yes, the pastries and fruits - were the best! Especially mango and papaya! About the beach - ok this was interesting. On a good side, there was a plenty of space, but the beach itself wasn't clean. We got couple of windy days and the seaweed was everywhere. It took a hotel couple of days to bring a bulldozer, dig a hole to dump a seaweed and put a sand on top. Well, let me tell you the smell was unbelievable! Yeah, they did not rush to clean it first thing in a morning, oh no! This should've geather spectators, so the workers did clean or "so call" clean in a midday. Forget about brushed beach, it was rough and bumpy, since it was done by a bulldozer. Also, being from California, be ready that everyone smoke! Pools were so warm and dirty it felt like swimming in urine. One more negative: we caught a giant roach in a lobby, and waitress just let it out. Couldn't sleep well after it. Kayaks need to be reserved in advance. There are couple of positives: there is a hidden sauna at the massage place on the beach. Eventhough it does look like it requires some TLS, it was nice. Also, personnel was very friendly. Towel lady came by the midday just to pick up dirty towels and add fresh ones. Interesting fact: you can negotiate a price even at stores, we even did it at duty free! Duty free at the airport: please note if you are travelling light, with no baggage claim with transfer in USA, all liquids you bought at Dominican Duty free will have to go in a baggage otherwise they would not allow you to go through the customs. Tours: we booked a tour to Saona, a beautiful place itself. Just a stop we made before going on the boat was a filthy toilet with a hose running a water for flashing a toilet and washing the hands. Also , a nice lady upfront of the toilet will give you a rolled out peace on toilet paper. :) forget about showers or privacy, locks in the cabins were all broken. I like Caribbean sea and if anything can make things better - is natural beauty. I know that it would not be my last time at the Caribbeans but probably fist and last at this place. Tips on what to bring: change, waterproof case for phone or camera, sunscreen and after sun products - prices there are astronomical for sunscreens and after sun. This place is good for whoever likes alcohol, party and smoking. Good luck!
