Good Spring Break, Not Quite Spectacular

It has the comforts, design, and cleanliness that I enjoy from Riu. The food options, quality, and taste were disappointing. The hotel was fully booked when we stayed and this caused problems with receiving room service. One night we didn't even receive our order. Most of the shows we enjoyed. Overall good spring break with our teen children.

Great Value

this place was totally solid for the price. Fun crowd, fun bars, clean rooms, clean pool, clean beach, helpful staff - in short, everything you want. We were there the week of Easter which is usually very busy, and there were still plenty of chairs on the beach and at the pool, so you don’t need to rush down before breakfast to reserve them, unless you want a prime poolside spot. Also, the pool bar has a bunch of little tables and benches around it in the water, so you can hang and get drinks and the bar itself doesn’t get overcrowded, which happens at a lot of other places. One negative - there are no umbrellas on the beach; you have to pay $10USD per day to rent them which is not cool. Taxi from the hotel to the boardwalk in downtown PV is about $20USD, well worth it to check it out. Also, no smoking at any of the bars, even the outdoor one and the pool bar – that’s either a positive or a negative depending on where you stand, but something I wish I had known ahead of time.

Excellent Palace much chair saving Poor Scuba Car

First the only down sides - out of 7 Riu Palaces I have stayed , I have never seen a problem finding pool or beach loungers, except for a few specific locations that some people find perfect and tend to "reserve" early. The pool and beach grounds of this Riu Palace are smaller and the hotel was full while we were there, so there were times during the day when it was difficult to find 2 empty loungers for two people. Because of this, chair saving was rampant - the get up early, run down to the pool and claim your space type of chair saving. Not much of a problem for us since we did not hang out by the pool or beach all day and usually just wanted some shade loungers for a short time early or late in the day, and with some searching we could find something suitable. Middle of the day nothing may be a available. So if you are here for the pool and perfect spot, be ready to claim your space early in the morning every day. I have never seen that problem at other Riu Palaces - more space and loungers than this one. I have never been very impressed with the big operation Scuba Caribe that Riu hires to do all their water sports and scuba diving. Big outfits and cattle boats (boats with many divers and barely enough dive guides) that most divers like to avoid. I also prefer a small shop or one with direct owner involvement over more impersonal, although usually very personable dive masters, but relatively new dive masters with big turnover, doesn't seem the safest. I needed 2 dives to be fresh for an upcoming Fiji trip , that requires dives within the past 6 months. Seemed easiest to just submit to Scuba Caribe and sample Puerto Vallarta diving, which was not of much real interest to me. There also did not seem to be any other dive shops close by. After hauling all my gear to Nuevo Vallarta, I got lied to by the dive shop the first day. The Scuba Caribe desk person said there was no diving due to a red tide. A day later I emailed Vallarta Adventures, and asked if they were diving anywhere. They replied they only go on safe conditions, yes they were diving and no mention of a red tide. I asked again at Scuba Caribe at the Riu Palace and this time was told they had lost their insurance AND lost their dive master.....very very poor response and service. I almost missed the dives I wanted to stay current. I immediately went and booked dives with the a travel agent in the Riu lobby using Vallarta Adventures that departs from Nuevo Vallarta Marina, just a few miles and $7 taxi from Riu Palalce. Additionally due to the cold season for diving I got a boat and very experienced and professional dive master all to myself. Glad I double checked on the Scuba Caribe b.s. and run around I got the first time from Scuba Caribe. Their only credit is the second time I went the Scuba Caribe, th counter person recommended I try other options for diving. My wife and I also hoped to kayak or use a hobie cat. Except for our last full day there, the wind and waves came up about 10 mph early in the day and Scuba Caribe kept a red flag up and no free watercraft use. We still had one exceptionally nice experience, thanks to Scuba Caribe. The last day I noticed a yellow flag when I returned to the resort, near noon, after scuba diving and the ocean was fairly calm, but Scuba Caribe said they had just finished kayaks for the day and would not let us kayak, but did let me sign up for a 2 PM hobie cat. This is the only Riu I have had to pay to sail a hobie cat, but the price is clearly noted on their price board. They also wanted to give me a check up before allowing me to go. During the hour before our 2 PM time, the wind and waves came up. Instead of giving me a check out and letting me sail, we got a free driver and enjoyed 1/2 an hour(not an hour) free ride. I could have easily handled the wind myself but it was nice they allowed us to go out, but only with an employee. We really enjoyed it - a pretty fast fun splashing ride. Everything else was Riu Palace perfect - great food, service, drinks, and housekeeping. Around the pool there was relatively frequent drink service from attendants and a cart came around sometimes to mix drinks on the spot. The design and architecture is the traditional, sort of "Renaissance" style that Riu used for their first palaces. They now use a modern simplistic design in the newer palaces. The room has a free liquor dispenser with 3 or 4 favorites and free drinks in the fridge including Tecate. Good safe, flat screen TV, full amenities, double sink, lowered sitting area, decent size balcony and king size bed. Only downside, common in Mexico, is that thr bed was a bit on the hard side. The location is pretty great, almost like a gated community similar to Playacar Mexico, if you have been there. A modern shopping center is an easy, safe 1 mile walk away - with a pedestrian bridge over the busy coastal highway completing the walk to the shopping center. There are 2 banks in the center which provide the safest ATMs. We used at Banamex(good rates) to get pesos with our debit card. Scotia bank nearby has a higher rate. We also used the ATM at Riu Palace but it was excruciatingly slow, higher fees, and "out of service" the next day. There is large Mexican department store - Mega, in the shopping center and a few other stores. Taxi rates are pretty much fixed and the front desk or bell men can tell you what the rate should be - but as always also confirm with the taxi driver before getting in. Rates seemed pretty reasonable. We used Vallarta Adventures for a Marieatas Islands Eco tour(kayaking, snorkeling, SUP, bird watching and water tour around the main island and for scuba diving. From Riu Palace to Vallarta Adenvtures the standrd taxi rate was 110 pesos , about $6 US when we were there. We also did our own day trip to Sayulita - a popular, old style Mexican town and famous surfing - taxi about $19 one way, rent beach chairs and order from the restaurant you rent chairs from. Two chairs and umbrella about $20. An ice bucket of 6 beers at less than $2 per beer. Great food. At Riu Palalce, the most popular specialty restaurant is the Toscano Steak House. If you want to get in for their first seating at 7 PM, with their current set up, you need to get down and wait at the door starting about 6:20 PM. About 6:30 a host came out and starting taking names and room numbers, then let people in starting about 6:45 PM, and waiting starts when the room is fairly full. The entertainment team had activities going all day at the pool and music, but at a volume you could easily get away from if you did not want to be too close to it. Riu night shows are not our thing - I think karaoke one night and the other nights were various dance shows such as Mexican, etc. I still felt this was an exceptionally nice Riu and the lounger saving game was not important to us. I also am rating the resort, not Scuba Caribe - just warning you about loungers and Scuba Caribe water activities. My rating is on the Riu employees, service, food, drinks, and rooms, etc. The Riu part was near perfect.

Beautiful, Clean, Great Value

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Riu Palace in Punta Cana last year and thought highly enough of it that we wanted to stay at another Riu Palace. The Riu Palace Pacifico didn't disappoint. The resort was absolutely spotless and employees were constantly cleaning. The staff overall was very friendly and the restaurant staff went above and beyond, especially the breakfast and lunch crew, they were awesome. The activities that the resort offered during the day at the pool and the beach were pretty good and the staff really helped get people to participate. The drinks were fine, no complaints on being watered down or anything but I suggest tipping the bartenders to keep getting quick service and stronger drinks. There were a few good shows at the resort during our time there; there was one on the beach with fire-twirlers and dancers and another inside that was a Michael Jackson tribute. Breakfast and Lunch buffets were pretty good, there is something for everyone. The Japanese restaurant was a little subpar. The Mexican and Steakhouse restaurants were great! We felt very safe at the resort and could easily get a cab anytime we needed one. We purchased the Amstar travel upgrade through CheapCaribbean to and from the hotel and the airport, very convenient and worth the price. Don't buy excursions from the people when you first arrive to Mexico from the airport, those amazing deals are tied in based on making you sit through a timeshare presentation at a resort 30 minutes away from the Riu Palace. We booked our excursion through our Amstar rep at the resort. We chose the one where you take a speed boat ride across the bay, ride 8 ziplines and repel down waterfalls. It was incredible, well worth the $100 extra! The scenery on the beach of the coastline and the mountains in the background were so beautiful it's hard to describe. If you rent a jet ski from the people on the beach, try to go in the morning when the water is more calm. We rented during the mid afternoon and the water was very choppy and made for a wild ride. Most people at the resort were Americans, we are from Ohio and met people from Michigan, Minnesota, Wiconsin and California. There were some kids and families there but also a lot of 20-30's couples and some older folks. If you want relaxation you can get it here but if you want to let loose and party, you can certainly do that here too. It's got something for everyone. I would definitely go back, the Riu Palace Pacifico appeared to be one of the nicest resorts in the area by far.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The teal ocean and breezy palms on the white sand of Flamingos Beach. Swoon-worthy.

RiuLand, where kiddos can get immersed in arts and crafts while you enjoy some sand 'n surf therapy.

Sipping on cocktails and watching the crazy beautiful pinky orange sunsets over the water.

The spa where you can descend into stress-smashing messages & thalassotherapy, a seawater treatment.

The in-pool loungers where you can chillax, swim around a bit, then return to work on your tan.

What We'd Change

You'll love venturing into downtown Puerto Vallarta, but keep in mind, the cruise ships generally come in on Tuesday and Thursday so it can be busier on those days.

Why You Should Go

It's just 8 miles away from the airport. Blink, and you'll be there.

Don't miss horseback riding in the Sierra Madres or swimming with the dolphins in Banderas Bay.

There's an 18-hole, championship golf course that a coconut's throw away.

Check out the bodyboarding (it's very popular), windsurfing, catamarans and more. Dive in.

On land, there's volleyball, billiards and for the flexible/bendy types, there's gymnastics.
