Good value, Lousy Beds
Out of the five hotels in the RIU Punta Cana complex, the Macao is the oldest. At first I had hotel envy, because the Palace and the Bavarro are so much more spectacular. They are both bigger with more restaurant choices, cooler pools and since they are newer, I assume have more luxurious rooms. After a few days, though, I started to like my choice better. The Macao is centered between the hotels, so you can visit the other hotels easily. The bigger hotels, however, were much more crowded. We went on Easter week and the big hotel beaches and pools were crammed, whereas, our pool and beach had just scattered people. It was much more quiet at our hotel, which we enjoyed. The Naiboa hotel wasn't that crowded either, but it isn't right on the beach. The Bambu hotel was swarming with kids. After visiting the other hotel buffets, I determined the food was about the same everywhere, so for less money, I think we made a good choice. My only negative...and it was a big negative...was that the bed was extremely hard. Like sleeping on a table with sheets. We complained and received an extra blanket. Still didn't help. After a week, both my boyfriend and I had super stiff necks. I think if you have more body fat than I do, it might not matter, but for anyone as bony as I am, it was really uncomfortable.
Also, I had a wonderful massage on the beach, but the snorkeling wasn't worth it. And, if you do stay at the Macao, get a room on the top floor....better views and the ceilings are vaulted.
Being that this was my first all inclusive, I don't have another to compare, but in my opinion it was FANTASTIC!! The RIU Palace Macao was a wonderful resort. The staff was very friendly and willing to assist you at any time. Juan, our bartender at the Tiki Bar was great. He was very entertaining! Our room was good with everything you needed. The refrigerators are not the coldest but it was good enough to keep your water/soda cold enough to drink when needed. Sometimes the cleaning women were overly anxious to help as they would attempt to enter your room again in the evening (not knowing you may be in there) to bring more towels for the day) We learned to put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door while in the room. We found the food to be average. If there was something you couldn't find to eat, shame on you. If you are looking for extravagant meals, this is not the place. You always had a wide variety of items at the buffet......all kinds of meats, vege, always a great salad bar, fresh fruit - which is awesome on the island and always can make a sandwich at any time. We found the dinners to be good also - again, always had beef, chicken, pork.....variety of vegetables...one night we had filet migon wrapped in bacon....another had prime rib....I'm a big beef eater so I was well pleased. The beaches were absolutely beautiful. Sitting on the beach with a great book and have a cocktail delivered to you.....can't ask for anything more. We went on two excursions while there....the Segway Tour and the Dune Buggys......would highly recommend them both for the money you pay. Again, excellent service by the tour people, very friendly and most of all - Lots of Fun! On both trips you get to experience beautiful areas of the island.....and also seeing the poor areas also which is sad. On the Segway Tour we went to the most beautiful lagoon which we were able to swim - water was the clearest I've ever seen.....and the dune buggy tour.....we got to explore a cave which you were able to swim in also.
We were able to visit and use the facilities at 2-3 of the other RIU Resorts that were close by - other than having dinner there. We went to a few of the shows and used the pools during the day.
Overall, the experience was wonderful......no cell phone, no exact time to be anywhere....did what you wanted/when you wanted - didn't bring a computer but they do give you access to one in the lobby for a small fee if needed.
If you are looking for a trip just to relax, rest, enjoy long walks on the beach and to be able to eat/drink when you want.....this is the place!
I can't wait to start planning my next vacation!
This trip was AMAZING! The hotel was beautiful, the food was great (was hoping for lobster more often) the staff was incredibly helpful.
Do yourself a favor, learn a few words of Spanish. My boyfriend speaks French fluently, I speak Spanish and so we had no problem communicating with anyone. Againt his hotel is amazing, its beautiful, clean, everyone is friendly.
I never ever once felt uncomfortable, never felt like I was being bothered by the guys selling things on the beach.
One thing I will say. This is very important! Do Not agree to do a free boat trip. We wanted to go on a boat the whole time, so we took a free ride! Its funny looking back on it now but the free ride took us to a time share presentation. My boyfriend left it up to me to get angry and we immediately got a ride back with a little New York Attitude anything is possible!!
BEST VACATION EVER!!
Going back April 2012!!
This is a fine four star hotel with friendly staff,
good food, nice rooms, and well maintained.
However, the clientele has some real low lives.
They get drunk and noisy at night and yell and
scream at 3:00 in the morning and wake you
up. The disco is very loud and the music plays
very late at night. The RIU chain is excellent,
but some of the clientele here is just too much.
Where do people like this get the money to
stay at a four star hotel?
