Meh

The food wasn't terrible. It wasn't outstanding. It was okay overall I suppose. The biggest issue I had was that the staff really wasn't helpful until you brought a tip into the equation upfront. It would take most of the meal to even get so much as a glass of water. The sheets were never changed. Not once. They cleaned the room ONE time and that green little door hanger was out daily. After staying there I have a rash on my foot that has progressively gotten worse. The only place I was during the Dominican visit was the resort or the beach. The beach was really dirty with seaweed and I understand that washes in. I get it. The issue I see is that other places clean it up with rakes or tractors even. Not this joint. I can say with confidence I would question going back there even if the trip was free. I wasn't impressed and I expected a bit more out of RIU. I wouldn't recommend this to you, the reader. Not for a vacation you care to enjoy and especially not for something like a honeymoon.

Good value

This is not a first class 5 star resort but it's well worth the money. The swim up pool bar is a hit! The bad part was that the water was too warm like 75 degrees or hotter. All 3 pools were hot! The pools close by 7 pm. The resort staff will kick you out right at 7 pm daily. The beach was full of seaweed which made it hard to swim. The rooms are nice but they don't have temperature controls inside. You have to deal the the preset temperature and ceiling fan. Don't purchase the transportation with Amstar, all they want to do is sell you a time share. The cab ride for 2 will cost $35-$45 from the airport to the hotels. Leaving the airport is horrible. The airport has no air conditioning its all open on the tarmac with only ceiling fans. It's hot and noisy, dress accordingly.

Good value

This is a good value for the money. It's not a first class hotel resort but well worth the price. I recommend not to book your transportation with Amstar. All they want to do is sell you a time share or excursions. A taxicab costs $35-$45 dollars from the airport to the hotel and vise versa. The food is good a big variety, all the alcohol you can drink and most importantly no nagging kids! The beaches had a lot of seaweed which makes it hard to be in the water. The rooms don't have their own temperature controls so you have to deal with the heat. The swim up bar is a hit. Overall enjoyable stay.

The best time was away from the resort.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and from the moment we arrived we were dissapointed. We arrived at night and it was raining so as a newlywed couple on our honeymoon we wanted to go to sleep in a comfy room. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We went up to our as we were told "honeymoon upgrade" and walked into a room smelling like mold. My husband has asthma and we both have bad allergies and knew we couldn't sleep in that room. The front desk people were friendly and let us choose from two other rooms that smelled hopefully the least like mold. We did find a room to stay in and we're still uncomfortable. The bead wasn't very comfortable and the thin sheeted bedding was also not the best. The fan was old and made a lot of noise while we're sleeping as did the fridge. Then after staying in the room for 3 days there ended up being ants in the bathroom. We went to the front desk and were told they can spray the ants or move us. They reminded us our room was an upgrade we had the "garden view". Our view was not of a garden it was of a top of a building. We let them spray the ants and fortunately we only had 5 days left and the ants stayed away. As far as the food, the food in the buffets was not good at all. It made us sad and we aren't the type of people to get super drunk and eat meteocer food. We were sober and eating really bad food. We basically only ate mango, beans, rice and plantains. The dinner spots were okay. The best restaurant was the itallian. The shrimp spaghetti was the best and the staff/manager was very nice. The staff was the best part of the resort. My husband and I would honestly not reccomend Riu Palace Macao to friends or family.
