Great experience!

We had an excellent time and I wouldn't hesitate to return here. The service provided was fantastic. Employees were extremely friendly! I really liked how the resort was "smaller" in comparison to some larger resorts near by- Meaning, everything was within walking distance from your hotel room. I noticed some of the near by resorts needed golf carts to get around due to the size. The beach was breathtaking. Never once did we have a problem finding a lounge chair and we went to the beach at various times of the day (so there is no need to get there at sunrise in order to be able to get a chair, like you do at some other resorts). The hotel room was very clean and each room had a complimentary mini bar that they keep fully stocked with soda, bottled water, seltzer, beer, Gin, Rum, Vodka, and Tequila! Really, the only thing preventing me from giving my overall experience "5 Palms" is primarily due to the dining options. I hate to even complain at all because the resort overall is truly great. I would return here, even despite my complaints about my dining experiences. Okay, the "cons": Twice, during my 5 night stay, restaurants that I wanted to eat dinner at were closed due to weddings. The first time this happened only the Steak House was closed, so there were other options and wasn't that big of a deal. However, the second night this happened at least 4 out of the 6 dining establishments were closed without notice, even though it appeared the reception was only occupying one restaurant (of course the one I had wanted to go to). I'm still not sure why the other places were closed. I feel maybe wedding receptions should be elsewhere- separate from the resort restaurants (especially since there really aren't that many options overall). I ended up eating dinner at the Buffet, which I was disappointed about. The buffet was good for breakfast, but for dinner, I thought it was just ok. As for the other restaurants- the steakhouse was great for lunch and dinner, and the Italian Restaurant was also very good. I had hoped the menu options at the restaurants would have changed during the week I was there, but they didn't. I also found it odd that two of the restaurants (right next to each other) had the exact same menu listed. All in all, we had a great time and would recommend this resorts to others! You just can't beat the price!

DID NOT live up to the HYPE!!

Upon arriving at the Riu Palace Bavaro resort we were assigned our rooms and immediately noticed that it was not what we were told that we would have when booking through Cheap Caribbean. We had two rooms, one of which the air conditioner did not work. After being told that they could not get us into another room until the next day we tried to tough out one night. The next day we were moved only to discover that the safe did not work in our room. Imagine being told that the hotel is not responsible for your b=valuables in your room unless they are in the safe then the safe breaks with all of your cash and passport locked inside. This caused us to miss an excursion that we had planned that morning. What disaster follow? The air conditioning then went out at the hotel to the point that you would rather be outside than inside! What else could go wrong you ask?? The next day the water goes out at the entire resort!!! No, not just the hot or cold water... All of the water!! After being out and about in the sun and dining the last thing you want to happen is to not be able to take a shower!! Not to mention the toilet situations!! What a complete nightmare! Of course by then I knew all of the front desk associates by name (Jerry and Nathanael). But I could never seem to speak to the General Manger (Rob). Oddly enough he was always either away on an emergency, or somewhere that they could not locate on the property. Go figure. And what did they offer me the day before I was to check out? No not money off my stay as most would think... But a room upgrade!! Why on earth would I take that when I check out the very next morning!!! What a complete waste of money! And to add insult to injury I was told to contact the headquarters in Spain if I did not like their resolution offered because they could not discount my stay. Lesson learned... I will definitely stay anywhere other than the RIU for my all of my next vacations. With that I tried to contact the number listed for customer service only to be told that there is no such customer service. My only alternative would be to send an email to crm@riu.com. When I asked what department that what or who I was contacting I was told by the telephone agent that he does not know but that was all he could do.

The resort itself was so/so. We visited the other surrounding Rius that were availble to us and we by far liked the bavaro the best. The macao did look good but we you cant go there unless your staying there bc its an asults only. Unfortunstely the weather wasnt on our side which made us have to use the resort more instead of the beach/pools. There wasnt much to do so we just drank. The drinks are good, alcohol was watered down. The services was okay (nothing beats the service in Mexico). We just werent a fan of DR in general. However I do recommend the Saona Island excursion. It was by far the best day we had. The food @ the resort also got us a sick whether it was the water or food not sure, also heard of other people getting really sick. We upgraded to the junior suit pool view, it was cool but I definitely both think it was worth the extra $. The layout of the room was good though & they have a tub/jacuzzi which was nice. However me and my bf are 23-26 so were pretty easy to please. It was definitely a great trip & the beach was beautiful. So if you are not super picky I recommend this place but if your expecting a 5 star resort dont bother.
