Beach

This was the first time we had stayed at the Riu hotel anywhere. The place was very nice and the people that worked there were Extremely nice! Only thing that was upsetting was that there was debris everywhere on the beach making it hard to walk on.

October (off season) Break

Overall the resort is nice. It is quite large so be prepared to walk for your meals, pools, etc. Staff were helpful in booking excursions and making recommendations. The beach is very nice and sandy for a significant way out into the water. The buffet is huge and offers lots of variety - since it was the off season some of the other night restaurant choices were closed. The jerk shack on the beach is very good. There were shows every night and some were more enjoyable than others. The resort is older and needs some updating. The king bed was very springy and not comfortable. The television was snowy the entire week and one day we didn't have hot water. We were there during the threat of Hurricane Matthew and these issues did not seem to be related to this - the resort did a nice job of preparing for the hurricane and communicating with guests. The location of the resort is good once you get there, but it is quite a drive to and from the airport.

Best vacation in years

I am a vegetarian and always had excellent food choices. The excursions offered at the hotel were great. The view from the room was fantastic and the entertainment was marvelous. I have visited this resort three times and plan to go back in the future.

Jamaica

I really liked the hotel, It was very pretty with beautiful woodwork. The lobby and bar areas are outdoors and could be quite warm to sit outside in during the evenings in August. There was always plenty of choices for food for all the meals and something for everyone. The staff was very nice and friendly, I was quite surprised when I got a knock on the door and it was a bellman carrying a cake and an envelope. It was my birthday that day and the gave me a cake. There were 2 large pools on each side, we stayed on the one on our side. The beach was nice and the jerk chicken they serve on the beach was very good. I had read previous comments about the smell of mildew in the rooms. When we entered out room there was a smell that I first thought was mildew but turns out it was the strong smell of all the woodwork. The doors, frames, headboards, mirror frames and even the chest of drawers was all solid wood. The smell wasn't noticeable after a few minutes and didn't bother us. I however noticed the dresser drawers made my clothes smell funny and if I had known wouldn't have used them. All in all we loved the resort, the people, pools, food and the drinks. It was well worth it

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

There's Red Stripe Beer in the fridge. Every. Day.

The stress-ousting massages and treatments at the Renova Spa. Swoon.

The Jerk Chicken Hut on the beach. You'll be jammin' here ofter. Probably daily.

The phrase you hear everywhere, "No problem, Mon." Go ahead and start practicing.

The epic snorkeling that's right on the beach. Brightly colored fish will make your underwater pics dazzle.

Dunn's River Falls and swimming with the dolphins - close by and always touristy fun.

What We'd Change

Plan early if you want to eat at the a la carte restaurants - it's first come, first service.

Why You Should Go

The airport is about 62 miles away, but the drive through the lush hills is a stunner.

It's so worth it to upgrade to the Deluxe Wing - concierge service 24/7.

You can get a free introductory to scuba lesson in the pool. Dive in!

There are water sports out the wazoo - windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling.

On land, you can play tennis, volleyball and take an aerobics class.

The entertainment team blows it out, starting with the nightly reggae, steel drums & chill beats.

The botanical gardens of Canbrook aren't your average "flower forest." It's uber lush.
