RIU Ocho RIos OK
So the Riu Ocho Rios was nice, beautiful hotel, too large though for my liking. Rooms were clean, and the food was eh. We encountered a problem when we got into our first room, asked for a change and the head honcho was not very nice on the phone and didn't want to come see our problem like she couldnt be bothered. They took us to another room that was a horrible smell like mold and we said no way and had to settle for a room on the original floor we were on. Food was plentiful but like I said, it was just OK. As the week wore on the clientel got pretty cheesy! It was an overall good value for what we paid. Most of the staff was very nice, the place was very clean, the food was ok, the drinks were good. Dont miss the Dunns River Falls trip and the Ziplining....had a lot of fun

Wonderful vacation!!
We stayed at the RIU April 18-25 2012 and had a spectacular time. The staff was helpful and polite. The service in the bars and dining room was also very good. The beach was clean and there were always beach chairs to be found in the sun or shade. The pool was also beautiful and we frequented the pool bar. The chairs by the pool were a bit more limited, but we always managed to find a spot. We got upgraded to a Junior Suite and it was a very nice rooom, but did have a musty smell present and as other reviewers have noted, the beds are hard and the pillows are small and flat. The food at the buffet was ok and we always found something we could eat and certaintly never went hungry. The Jerk Chicken shack for lunch was great. We ate it for lunch every day. The omlette station was a great choice for breakfast. There were also many local fresh fruits available and I enjoyed trying many fruits that I have never had before. We took the catamaran ride to the falls and it was spectacular. We took the sailboat ride there, climbed the falls then snorkled for a hour or so. We saw some great fish, a sea snake, and moray eels! We would definitely go back!!!

23rd Birthday in Jamaica-AMAZING
This hotel is so fun! The staff is so friendly and the entertainment crew is sure to make you have a good time. The food was excellent-many options. One night was lobster night and it was delicious! They have a jerk chicken/ribs barbeque on the beach everyday at the Jerk Hut. BE sure to make reservations for any of the restaurants the day you arrive as they book up quickly. I have absolutley no complains except for the fact that I had to come back home =(
Let me start by saying that Jamaica is beautiful and the beaches and the people there are awesome. However, the Club Riu Ocho Rios-not so much. The resort was nice and the staff was wonderful (not including the front desk)-always helpful and happy-especially Horace. The day we got there we had to ask three times for pillow cases. I guess we should be happy that we could get lukewarm showers that day because the rest of our stay we had NO hot water! We spent part of every day of our vacation at the front desk trying to get an honest answer about when or if we would ever have hot water. The second day we were there the hot water went off completely while I was in the shower and they told us that it would be on in half an hour. An hour and a half later, there was still no hot water and I rinsed the shampoo out of my hair with cold water in the sink but we had already missed our dinner reservation! We tried to be nice about it but by the fourth night we were ticked off. By the fifth night we were beyond ticked off! At this point the supposed manager wouldn't even acknowledge us and when the person we were talking to went and asked him to talk to us, we heard him say "get someone else, I'm not dealing with them again". Like it was more of an inconvenience to him than it was to us. That night alone we spent four hours at that desk (at least at this point, for the first time the person we were talking with said "I'm sorry") until my husband got angry and told the that they WILL find a room for us to take a shower! They said they were booked and could not give us a place to shower which really made my husband angry, now he started to get loud and they somehow found a room for us to shower. But, why do you have to get loud? Why couldn't they just do the right thing to start with? And their I don't care attitude makes it worse. We weren't the only ones without hot water. Every time we were at the desk about the water there were always other guests there complaining about the same problem. Needless to say, we will NOT be returning there and we will NOT recommend this resort.

What is the time it takes to drive to the airport? ... to dunns river falls?11 answers

Riu Ocho Rios is approximately an hour and a half from the Montego Bay Airport, and a short 15-20 minute drive to Dunn's River.
KateCC
Airport to Hotel approx. 30-40 minutes, but worth the time to see the island.
Indianna
We didn't go directly to Dunn's River Falls. We did a tour booked through Cheapcaribbean.com and went on a catamaran tour first for some snorkeling, then sailed to Dunn's River Falls, had some food and drinks and sailed back.
LORIGSW
We drove from the airport to ocho rios, then we went to the falls the following couple of days. Seems like it's about a hour and a half from the airport to Ocho Rios, then it takes maybe a half an hour to 45 minutes to get to the falls. It's hard to find, the sign is tricky to locate, it will be on your right, unless you pass it, like we did. But it's easier to see the sign once you turn around and are headed back toward Ocho Rios.
MelWest
mbj to riu is about an hour and 10 min, depending on how you get there and how many stops...the more stops the longer it takes but without stops it should be an hour
Anto83
It takes about 2 hours from Montego Bay airport to the resort. Dunns River Falls is about a half an hour away.
Golden1
1.5 hours to resort

The airport about an hour and 45 minutes............Dunn River Falls around 10 - 15 minutes

To the airport: about two hours.
To Dunn's River Falls: about 10 minutes, unless you take a Catamaran cruise.
zmami
u should plan from 1:45-2;00 hours

The airport is about 1 hour away from resort. The property is about 15 - 20 minutes ride away from the property.

can you surf near this location?6 answers

todd
Hey, Todd. We just came back from Dreams Cancun. Had a fabulous time, but I'm afraid to say, we did not see anywhere you could surf. Waves simply were not even close to surf-worthy!
Bump
I would not think so.
The area around Porto Morales had NO surf whatsoever. The only whitecaps we saw were >1' and only at high tide.
I would look at the nearby areas and certainly research going further south towards/past Tulum for surfing.
But I do not think this area in general is suitable for surfing.
DCvacationer
I dont know
jerkee
No. The beach is roped off well before the waves break. The water is very calm insinde the ropes.
Ronniedude
We saw virtually no surf on the northern coast. I mean 12" waves beating against the shore. Better check before you go
Anonymous
Yes, they rent surf boards at the resort.
Gjwj
(Riu Ochos Rios) We are not surfers but we noticed that the waves were not very big and they break really far out because of the coral reefs. It seemed that even though they took us out snorkeling almost a mile from shore, we were in pretty shallow water with a lot of reefs around. I would guess that it's not a very good surfing spot. We didn't see any surfers while we were there.

Will I have to come out of pocket beyond the final total for additional fees? I'm referring to the all inclusive package to RIU Ocho Rios
1 year, 12 months ago
nlm1908
Yes. I used this site to book to St. Croix and the final price was the final price. I got a package that covered flight, hotel, and a car to and from the airport. I booked three months in advance and was never charged anything additional.
genna
It will cost you $10 at the airport for a tourist card.
jetset317
what you paid is it, there really is no need to carry any cash with you on the property, only for the gift shops and if you want to tip,
jerkee
nope. i was worried about that also. but no
mrnick
It was covered. I paid nothing extra
Alphadawg

parney
Our total charge did include all extra fees other than airline baggage charges. That included the exit papers.
Anonymous
there are no more out of pocket fees after you pay the final price. The only other fees are the tips you might want to give to the wonderful people at the all-inclusive resorts.
Shaybay
It includes all costs. There were no fees I had to pay at all, the final total is it.
Gjwj
The final price is all you have to pay. At times bus drivers, guides, bell boys, bartenders, etc may make statements about tipping, but it is not required. So if you added the airport transfer on the site into your package, you are all set. If you add tours not from the site obviously those would be additional. Also there is a spa at the resort and that would be a fee if you choose to do that. My first time to the Riu Ocho Rios, on the way home my the airline charged my for my checked bag, but my airline this year did not.
Liv5
We did not have to pay anything additional for our ai trip to RIU Ocho Rios

How do most people get around the Island?4 answers
How to get around Jamaica-options taxis, mo-peds, rental cars?
Houston, Texas
Most travelers take a taxi or if they are taking an excursion they are provided with transfers from the vendor themselves. Please keep in mind, most people do not travel on their own in Jamaica.
DanielleCC
It seemed that most tourists get around by taxi or buses/vans (booked through the hotel). We did take notice that the taxis overcharge tourists from the hotels - so if you call a taxi definitely negotiate a price first before getting in. A local told us its only supposed to be a $1 to go a few miles into town and they were charging $35 from the hotel. I definitely would not rent a car though (they drive on the left side and they drive craaazy). Not to mention there's a lot of really narrow back roads to get places and seems it would be easy to get lost (unless you're only going from the airport to your hotel. In that case there is one major road that goes all the way around the island). I never saw any tourists on mo-peds, only some locals. Hope that helps!

Is there an ATM for American dollars at the Riu Ocho Rios?3 answers

The resort does not specifically state that it offers an ATM on property. While there may be an ATM on property, please note that your bank/credit card company may charge a higher than normal fee for using an ATM outside of the US. We suggest checking with your banking institution prior to departure, or taking the necessary cash with you on your trip.

Hotel Description
A Rainforest at the Beach? Yah, Mon!
Dreaming of a tropical rainforest without a hardcore excursion into the Amazon? Don't worry, here's a gorgeous Caribbean resort that's more your style, Riu Ocho Rios in Jamaica is the perfect place to see the mighty jungle from the comfort of a modern resort.
The resort, opened in 2005, definitely stands out with its purple exterior, but there are other standout features here. The two large pools have swim-up bars, which means you can have pina coladas all day without ever getting off your float. If you do want to cut loose, Riu Ocho Rios' friendly staff leads playful contests and activities to amp up the fun. And don't forget, all this is to the sound of waterfalls in the distance. If the call of the wild beckons you to explore the surrounding ocean, you can prep for your adventure with a free introductory scuba lesson in the resort's pool.
While groups and couples kick it up at the lively pools, families and kids can splash around in the children's pool. The staff also puts on daily entertainment programs for the little ones. Even better, the resort's private beach has calm and shallow water, so parents with small children have peace of mind at Riu Ocho Rios.
Jamaica's laid-back vibe resonates throughout the resort's eight restaurants too. At breakfast, have your fill at the St. Ann buffet. Later, enjoy a casual, poolside lunch at the Plantation. Be sure make dinner reservations at Mammee Bay, the beachfront grill.
Even with jerk chicken and tropical drinks, your Jamaican vacation isn't complete without some Reggae. That's why the resort's nightly entertainment usually kicks off with chill beats, steel drums and smooth sounds. Once the band has warmed up the crowd, get ready to laugh during audience participation games. Then the real entertainment starts. With elaborate costumes and peppy numbers, it's as if these themed shows and off-Broadway acts stepped right off a high-end cruise ship. After the show, the fun doesn't stop - it just moves on to Pacha, the all-night disco.
