Not what I expected ....

The resort was okay but not what I expected from a Riu property ( Having stayed at 3 other Riu properties.) The beach was AMAZING and mostly relaxing, although they do not stop local vendors from harassing you. when you approach the water ( but if you stay in the sand they can not walk up to you). The main pool was dirty and when I did try to swim was covered in a nasty film. Entertainment was minimal nut, the overall vibe of the resort is relaxing. which I appreciated. The food was not very good and there were not many options. There were very few dining options after hours. With no 24 hour room service and the dining hall closing at 10 you could count out the late night snacks. There are several stand alone restaurants but ALL of the dining options require casual attire. I was told i wasn't appreciate in a see through over up and shorts. ( I had to have on a "real shirt") The rooms are far from the central activities, which was pretty annoying. In order to get a meal you have to get fully dressed and walk miles to the nearest eatery for sub par food :-/. The rooms were clean but I have reason to believe i was bit by bed bugs. The highlight of my trip was the people. Bartenders and servers and management were awesome and tried to accommodate us. Not horribly upset but ... I will not be visiting this resort again and I would not recommend for anyone else!

MY EXPERIENCE

The hotel is beautiful and clean. Food is great. The only thing I didn't like is the shared transportation. There is always a wait to be picked up which I didn't complain BUT when the customers are late, it's a problem. I was actually late for my pick up time to the Airport by about 12 minutes or so and the driver was very rude and even though I begged him to wait that my family is actually coming, they were a few steps away, he didn't want to wait. He actually started to drive away and said I have to take my own transportation to the airport even though I already paid round trip! I was shocked and really disappointed! I started to run after him knocking on the door to open because my husband and kids reached the lobby. He hesitated and then opened the door and said he will be in trouble and that I have to pay him to take me to the airport and give him a big tip! We went in the bus quietly. There was only 1 passenger in the whole big bus. I was very worried and was wondering how much money I may have to pay him. Anyways, he picked up about 4 more passengers at another resort and we all got to the airport 3 hours before boarding time. No one was late. I tipped him 4 times the normal amount and then he said he has to answer to his boss so that's why he was like that. I just looked at him and thanked him. It's funny how money changes the world. I just want to say is that I the resort is beautiful, no complain but the transportation Team is discouraging.

All new !

This was our third time at this resort. They have completely remodeled the property, rooms, and lobby. It all looks great. New and fresh. New tile showers in the rooms, fresh paint and curtains. The beach is great, and enjoyed the vendors selling their wares. One thing that also changed is the food. Before it was one of our main reasons for staying at the Riu. But the quality of the buffet has definately diminished. There was no seafood night, which we loved, and a lot of food on the buffet that no one wanted to eat. A wonderful trip. all in all.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The singing bartender. See if you can find him. He'll mix you up a high-octane cocktail.

Great bang for your buck for all the activities, entertainment and food and drink you'll get.

The service at Riu is the best. They keep everything clean and orderly. You will be spoiled.

Nightly entertainment keeps the party going at night. And into the wee hours, if you must.

The sunsets off the shores of Negril are some of the best. Get your cameras charged and ready for snaps.

The infamous Rick's Cafe is not too far - the cliff divers are awe-mazing.

What We'd Change

The omelet bar is favorite in the morning. Get in line early to avoid a long wait.

Why You Should Go

Getting to Negril will take you about an hour & a half, but it's so worth it. Beachy drinks are waiting.

Grab some locally made souvenirs in town. Your friends/fam will kiss your ring upon receipt.

The restaurants at night will fill up, so make sure to make your reservations a couple of days in advance.

Beach shoes are always a good idea, especially when you want to beachcomb your way up the shores.

Pay a little extra to get upgraded Wi-Fi - it will work even on the beach. You'll def want it there.

The One Love Bus Tour will pick you up at the resort and show off all the local night spots in Negril.
