Aesthetically a nice resort, room for improvement

when you walk into the Riu Negril the resorts large spaces, statuettes, and stark contrast between dark and light scream luxury and that is something you can look forward to with this resort. with three different pool options and a large beach you are never too far away from the water and when it comes time to eat having the option of a buffet or sit down restaurant (without reservations, just show up early) was a nice change in pace. the rooms were beautiful but it was odd that if you request a room with two beds ( i was rooming with my brother) you will get two beds, that are pushed together. there seemed to be some slight plumbing issues (toilet constantly running, some water temperature issues, etc) but i have yet to stay at a resort in the Caribbean that did not have any plumbing issues. Now for the bad parts, much of the food really seemed to be aimed at “keeping everyone happy”. With a larger resort such as this one I understand that it is hard to stick to cultural roots as you have so many people coming and staying with you but it would have been nice to have more Jamaican options or even more fish options than what was available. That being said, the food was still good, I just didn’t think I would be eating a burger and fries, mac and cheese, and French toast every day. We stayed for 7 days and three days in we had a very windy day, this brought a whole lot of kelpey vegetation from the ocean onto the beach, something that is understandable and somewhat expected, but this vegetation then stayed on the beach, making it somewhat unusable for two days (it was impossible to get in the water without being tangled up in the vegetation up on dry sand). Then when they finally started to clean it up (something that the shops and other resorts in our bay had already done, they took a whole day to rake it into large piles and then another whole day with a backhoe to burry it under the sand. This really ruined the relaxing beach experience I was hoping for as we spent an entire afternoon stuck watching this backhoe burry vegetation, something that could have been done at night, or at least not at peak beach times. I am not sure why it took so long to get the beach cleaned up as the other resorts in the bay had no issue but it was somewhat frustrating to have my relaxing beach vacation interrupted by a messy unusable beach, blocked views by vegetation mountains, and then loud machinery. The staff working was all wonderful, they were constantly upbeat and kept everyone involved the entire time we were there (be it entertainment staff, restraint staff, or bartenders. every day there was water aerobics, bingo with prizes, poolside and beach activities, and a nightly show for entertainment and these staff members were “on” the entire time! Overall, we had a wonderful time, we had a large group and everyone was able to find their thing at all times, no one was stuck doing something they did not like. Everyone was able to find something to eat, drink, shop for, and enjoy. The Riu was a very nice resort to stay at.

Riu Negrill

This was my 4th time staying at Riu Negril! It was enjoyable as always. Although I do prefer the reservation process for the specialty restaurants. Waiting on lines for long periods is very frustrating! The Hotel staff are all very nice, courteous and a delight. Did not want my vacation to end! Until next time Jamaica!!

Great first-time experience

We just spent a week at the resort. This was third time to Negril, sixth time to Jamaica and first time to a Riu resort. In the past it was either Couples or Sandals so we weren't sure what to expect with a "non-couples only" place. My husband and I were both pleasantly surprised! The drop off from the shuttle welcomed us into a beautiful lobby/bar area. Check in was a breeze. I've read some reviews with complaints about the check in but we were all set and to our room within 10 minutes. We were also greeted with a welcome drink, which was really needed after that long bus ride. The room was beautiful. We were in building 2 which was great, after I read some reviews about the long walk to buildings 3 and 4. The only thing I wished we would have done is requested a beachfront, as we just stared at the other building across the way, and grass. But,...there is always next time! The pool bar was really fun and the employees really get people motivated to have fun with water aerobics and pool games. Most of the days, we went towards the other end of the beach near the beach bar and just relaxed on the lounge chairs. It was absolutely beautiful. We ate at the buffet for dinner every night. We actually tried to get in one of the restaurants for the 8:30 seating, and got in line at 8:15. There were approximately 12 people ahead of us when the employee came out and announced she only had seating for 5 more people, so that was that. They do not take reservation, contrary to what I read. The best part of the day was lunch when we'd go to the jerk chicken hut, which is open from 12:00-2:00. ABSOLUTELY the best!!!! We did that 3 days in a row. Breakfast and dinner buffets had a million things to choose from so it wasn't really boring. I was able to try a lot of different things. There were some smaller kids at the resort but they were always at the kid's pool. The only downfall is that the resort lost power at least 3 times during our stay but that may have been due to winds. Also, we had our valuables in the safe, and went to get them out when we decided to take the shuttle to Margaritaville, and got locked out of the safe. We almost missed the shuttle but everything worked out ok. All in all, we had a really good experience and I think we'd go back, however, we may try the resort in Montego Bay because of that bus ride, which I've done now on 4 different trips. (Going through the crowded towns made me sad seeing several homeless dogs walking around.) I would definitely recommend this resort to our friends! All of the employees were extremely friendly and would come up to us on the beach asking how everything was which was a really nice touch! All in all, we

An actual "All Inclusive"

After visiting several "all inclusive" resorts where there were many options that were not in-fact included, the Riu had everything we were looking for and turned out to be as advertised. The staff couldn't have been more friendly!

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The singing bartender. See if you can find him. He'll mix you up a high-octane cocktail.

Great bang for your buck for all the activities, entertainment and food and drink you'll get.

The service at Riu is the best. They keep everything clean and orderly. You will be spoiled.

Nightly entertainment keeps the party going at night. And into the wee hours, if you must.

The sunsets off the shores of Negril are some of the best. Get your cameras charged and ready for snaps.

The infamous Rick's Cafe is not too far - the cliff divers are awe-mazing.

What We'd Change

The omelet bar is favorite in the morning. Get in line early to avoid a long wait.

Why You Should Go

Getting to Negril will take you about an hour & a half, but it's so worth it. Beachy drinks are waiting.

Grab some locally made souvenirs in town. Your friends/fam will kiss your ring upon receipt.

The restaurants at night will fill up, so make sure to make your reservations a couple of days in advance.

Beach shoes are always a good idea, especially when you want to beachcomb your way up the shores.

Pay a little extra to get upgraded Wi-Fi - it will work even on the beach. You'll def want it there.

The One Love Bus Tour will pick you up at the resort and show off all the local night spots in Negril.
