Great Beach and property! Food was not so good.

After going to another resort last year we thought we would give the Riu a try. The beach is beautiful and very large-lots of chairs, games, trees for shade, and a bar is always near by. The pools were also decent and the whole resort was very clean. Restaurants were not so good. Not much variety in the food, and it was overall very salty and just not good. We ate out 3 of the 5 nights and had great meals, but of course cost extra when we already paid for the all inclusive. The bartenders were never stingy with the alcohol in the drinks, and although it was crowded we never waited for drinks at the bar. Because of the sister resort adjacent on the beach we were able to use their property and bars, which was nice-it felt like a larger resort. Overall it was a great vacation at the Riu.

Feb 2017 stay

I'm 23 and went with my boyfriend for 5 days in February. The check in was super quick and the staff helped us to our room. The room was very nice and comes with a fridge constantly stocked with complimentary water, beer, and soda. The pool is decent, but we had access to the sister pool next door, which is definitely nicer (swim up bar, fun games throughout the day, bigger pool). It would have been nice if the hotel told us about this upon checkin because we didn't find out until the second or third day. The food in the main restaurant and snack bar was okay, but the steak house was amazing! No extra charge, just wait in line to get a table! Overall very happy with our stay :)

The beaches were beautiful, but other than that the experience was just alright. The rooms are old and need updating. We saw several because there was mold in the showers of the first two rooms we were given. The 3rd room seemed better initially and the bathroom was much cleaner, but then the ceiling started to leak after about 24 hours of the AC being on. The food options are limited. Breakfast and lunch are buffet only. Dinner choices include buffet or one of 2 a la carte restaurants, which you cannot make a reservation for, so you have to wait online for about 45 minutes prior to the seating time of 6:30pm to ensure that you get a seat (they only take the first 100 guests). After all that waiting, the food is just average and there is no bar service at dinner (beer and bad wine only). The only real saving grace as far as the resort facilities was that you are able to have drinks and lunch at the sister resort, which is much nicer and just a short walk down the beach. The food is equally average, but the ambiance is much better over there!

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The sun-kissed, white powdery sands on the shores of Maimon Bay where you can lay your weary head.

The quaint pink bungalows that dot the three acres of lush tropical gardens that surround the resort.

RiuLand - where the kids will be happily occupied while you take a much-needed breather.

The spa treatments that squash, smash, and crush all the stress right out of your bod.

Three floodlit tennis courts, so you can play a set, then enjoy drinks under the stars by the ocean.

Visiting the rum factory nearby that's famous for its Ron Brugal founded in 1888. Bottoms up.

What We'd Change

Liquor lovers are bummed that generic brands are the only ones available, but the convenience of an in-room liquor dispenser is tough to beat!

Why You Should Go

The sister resort, Hotel Riu Bachata, lets you get in on the entertainment and activities. They like to share.

You get free entry to the casino and Pacha, the disco. Get gussied up and go for it.

There's banana boating, water polo, ocean kayaking, boogie boarding and oceans more water sports.

After a day of sun, you can wind down with a rousing game of table tennis or billiards.

Golf at Playa Dorado Golf Course is near. So is horseback riding. Get out and live large.

You can visit Santiago, Rio Damajagu waterfalls & La Isabela National Park - all super fun.
