The next time someone asks you what you're doing for the environment you can hold your head high and rave about your fantastic all inclusive vacation at Occidental Xcaret. Nestled within an ecological and historical preserve, atop a small private beach where snowy-white sand merges with the dancing tones of blue and green Caribbean surf, the eco-friendly Occidental Grand Xcaret boasts an exquisite old-world design with cobblestone paths, stone bridges and a meandering subterranean river that flows throughout the resort, connecting its five free-form pools.

Great Time at OGX
We had a great time at this hotel April 22-May3, 2012. It was a 50 minute drive from Cancun Airport. We used Entertainment Plus (USA Transfers) to/from the hotel and they were excellent. From arrival to departure at the hotel, everyone was friendly, courteous and helpful. The room was a standard room but was very clean with the minibar refilled daily and a very large shower with great water pressure. The concierge at the building was always helpful and friendly and they made our restaurant reservations - thank you Santos and Carl. The place is very large. There is a tram that takes you around which we found useful. Thank you Juan, the tram driver, who always waited for us when he saw us approaching. The Beach: this hotel does not have an ocean front beach but rather has a secluded lagoon which we liked a lot. If you are looking for pounding waves, this is not the place to go. The snorkeling is great right off the beach in the perfectly calm, clear water with plenty of fish. The bar service on the beach provided by Daniela and Ricardo was top notch! The buffets were ok, nothing spectacular, except for a few Mexican dishes at the beach buffet for lunch. The sit down dinners were very good and the staff was very attentive but you are limited to four nights per seven night stay in the specialty restaurants and you have to make a reservation. We saw Armando, the same head waiter, in two different restaurants and his attentiveness really made us feel special - thank you Armando! Xcaret Park: the park is connected to the hotel and is a five minute walk. The normal $100 ticket is discounted at the hotel for $79. Yes, we know this park gets great reviews but we could not see why. It was very expensive and once you got inside there were additional costs for many of the things you would have liked to do. There was a lot of walking around with not that much to see. The bat exhibit had no bats, the mushroom exhibit had almost no mushrooms, there were very few orchids in the orchid exhibit, there was one manatee in the manatee exhibit and so on. The butterflies, sea turtles and aquarium were nice. The snorkeling at the hotel was better than the park. The underground rivers had zero fish so I don't know why you snorkel and it so dark you saw nothing while wearing horrible vests which did not allow you to move very well through the water. They do collect all of your property when you enter the river, put it in a very large bag, lock it, give you the key and then transport the bag to the end of the river for you to pickup. If you did not buy the $119 ticket, then a buffet lunch is $30 ($30 for a buffet lunch in Mexico???). There is no water available in the park except for small bottles at $2.50 a bottle. The evening show gets great reviews but we could not see why. We left early, however, in all fairness, the Mexicans who are bused in just for the show loved it. If you have ever been to Disney, you will be disappointed. We would return to the hotel again particularly because of the lagoon.
The Occidental Grand Xcaret was a beautiful resort and my room was upgraded (booked Royal) and it was huge. Fresh towels delivered twice daily, room kept spotless, refrigerator stocked everyday as well.
I was disappointed in two things. One was that Complimentary Wireless Internet which was an option offered if booking Royal Club but hotel does not honor it when you arrive. The other is that this hotel does not have ocean access. They have a very small area they call a beach, where an area had been cut into rocks with some salt water and it's overcrowded with cabanas. If you're looking to sit on the beach with the entire ocean to go in, this is not the resort to do that.
The service in Royal Club is a little slow but well worth the wait. It is very private and beautiful. The food at this and all other restaurants was amazing.

The Jr Suite we were to have were only on the 3 floor with no elevators. The check in were of little help. We took a first floor room with two beds, with a balcony, went to dinner and when we got back the desk and wall by the desk were crawling with spider mites. I went to call the front desk and complain, but the phone would not work. After changing rooms again, this time with no balcony, we sitter in. The next two days we had to go each day get our key reprogramed, as we were locked out. The food was nothing to write home about, but the drinks were great. The pools and tran were easy to find and well run.
We just came back from this resort April 09-16, and after reading the reviews for a month before we left i was a bit apprehensive.
We did not have one problem at all. Check in was friendly and informative, the concierge only asked us one time about the "time share" for The Royal Club., and didnt ask us again. Every employee we encountered there, were pleasant and helpful. Wilson and Alberto at the swing pool was awesome, friendly and funny! Hamalinda who cleaned our room was fast and efficient and did a most excellent job. The steakhouse restraunt was extremely good. The buffet was good, just as i thought it would be and yes gets a little repetitive. The grounds were beautifully manicured and lush, i saw a deer two times outside of our balcony. The pools were big and awesome, a fun swim up bar. Our stay here was the best out of the three resorts we have been to in the past. There is alot of walking but they have a trolley to pick you up if you get tired, I do reccomend this resort and will come back again.

Mr Ed
Men are required to wear long pants and no beachwear or sandals are permitted.
MariaCC
dress casual ....other than that shorts, tanks, whatever you are comfortable in..must have a dress ladies for dining in a few of the restaurants also closed toe shoes...Men no sleeveless shirts for the dining reservation places with a closed shoe also.Nice place we enjoyed staying here...a city within itself.
vacationplanner2011
They just required pants and non t shirts in the restaurants. I also believe no flip flops for the men. However it did seem a bit relaxed while we were there.
paulina
bathing suit at Beach , shorts, tank tops , sundresses and cool evening wear . relaxing clothes you are on a holiday !!!
PADDYS11
First of all, many people don't adhere to "pants required". My suggestion is a Tommy Bahama type shirt, pants or nice bermuda shorts, with leather sandals. For the day, and at buffets, just about anything goes, lol! Women can get by with a sundress or shirt with nice shorts.
Mikewd
It is slacks and a collared shirt for men. No shorts or athletic wear allowed in the restaurants that require reservations.
Bubbastunt
Bathing suits all day. Casual at night. Men must wear pants to restaurants; no short allowed. Closed shoes as well.

Is there a swim up bar?3 answers
Are there any swim up bars at this resort? If so, what time are they open til?
imsatx
According to the resort's web site, there is one swim-up bar in the main pool. There is not a specific closing time, although it is usually when the pool itself closes. This time can vary, based upon the travel season, and occupancy at the resort.
KristinCC
Yes there is, but pool that has it does not have chairs....have to leave your pool to get drink, plus waitstaff is invisible!
Mikewd
There is only one swim up bar at this facility. It was open during the daytime hrs; and closed by about 6

How can we get to Playa Del Carmen?3 answers
Does the resort offer a shuttle service? how much does it cost?
AZ
The resort has a shuttle that runs within the property that is free of charge. The resort does not offer shuttle service off property. The best way to get to Playa del Carmen is via taxi and of course the rate would depend on what part of Playa del Carmen you wished to visit
ccsusan1
Taxi is about $12 one way to Playa. They are clean, fast, and safe. The hotel only uses one company and they have a guaranteed rate.
Bubbastunt
Someone on our trip took a cab; there was no shuttle to get there. I beleive they spent $15 each way to go.

Admission to the park is NOT free; it is $79 per day
Not sure if you can be guaranteed a ocean view.
