Property and Customer Service was not what expecte

The entire property was supposed to be renovated!! Upon arrival at the resort @ 2:30 pm we were told our room was ready when in fact it wasn't the dresser drawers were hanging out of the dresser. \Bathtub was dirty . When we did get in anotger room 2 hours later the television and radio did not work. Went to front desk to be told we could get another TV but the phone may have to wait until the morning. When they brought the other tv it didn't work either. Was put in another room @11:00pm this time having roaches. This property was not what we expected nor were we ever compensated for our troubles..... Food in snack bar had birds flying all over it.. Restaurant food was pretty good

POOR HOTEL EXPERIENCE

I don't recommend this hotel unless you don't mind 2 star or less rated service. This was my first trip to the Dominican Republic and my first bad experience in the Caribbean. This hotels appearance is beautiful as far as the dining, lobby and swimming pool areas. The beach area was pretty crowded and small. Some of the front desk staff was rude. Food was descent but nothing spectacular. Long wait times for the food once seated and order's are placed. The rooms were very outdated and basic with old dirty bathtub's and small ant like bugs crawling around. We did receive a free upgrade to the sister hotel Barcelo grand resort because the hotel was overbooked. To sum it all up if you are planning a trip to Punta Cana spend a few extra bucks for a good comfortable hotel stay. The Barcelo grand resort was a great experience for us, more activities, better restaurant choices, casino, shopping areas, plenty of bars and a beautiful beach area.

A work in progress

The resort is on one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. We are told that it was recently purchased by Barcelo and it looks like the renovations and landscaping improvements they are doing are going to position the resort where it needs to be. Clean, all White. Contemporary Colonial. That said it's a typical resort where you have the struggle between the timeshare people, the college kids misbehaving LOL and the hotel guests (us), all at different levels. The food was ample, they try hard to accommodate global eating habits and too many choices and could be better, they tell you the specialty restaurants are booked and then look half empty at 8 pm which causes us to question their integrity. We were First Club with special perks but because we booked through cheap Caribbean they would not check us in at either location and send us back-and-forth which basically added some stress and wasted an hour and a half of our time that we could've been on the beach. Note if you want dinner reservations for your date of check in you have to do it before you get there. Or they will tell you that it's closed which we really thought was not nice. I got sick the first day not due to anything with the resort and had to visit the on-site mini hospital and that was a rather positive but expensive experience. it's staffed 24/7 and they make room calls. I felt better in 2 days. The renovated room that we had which was oceanfront was beautiful and comfortable but as with any older property even though renovated we had issues with rain coming in and showers that are flat and don't drain properly. What really made me crazy was there was not a TV Guide in the room, no book of hotel policies, no room service menu (actually room service is not available but I can't remember if they said it was in the ad) or anything to tell you about goings on for the whole week we were there.... we basically had to figure everything out from other guests by Thursday and then leave on Saturday. Again it seems that most of these things are management issues due to the change in ownership, however most of the staff was really delightful very friendly and there was lots of security present so we felt safe at all times. I think if we go back I would wait a couple of years just to be curious as to what has changed there. But you have lots of choices in Punta Cana just shop for the one that feels the best for you.

1st morning Our view.

Occidental/Barcelo-Punta Cana

My wife, Joey, asked that I do this review. We experienced the worst accomadations and lack of even the basic amenities in our travel history. What we bought and what we were provided were miles apart and got either no responses and denial of upgrade. In part: A lack of water availability much of the time No room service. when asked, we were denied No television for 5 of the 7 days Air conditioning worked sometimes The room was in very poor condition- something out of the 30's could not take timely showers among other things. We bought a package that provided a superior room. this certainly wasn't it Would not respond to change of room or upgrade requests I could on but I don't expect a response to this review either
