While there are tons of things to do to have fun, the bright lights of the big city don't compare to the glory of a sun-bleached beach. For a taste of natural beauty, families head to Spanish-style Occidental Grand Punta Cana, where the all inclusive package promises beachfront fun in the Caribbean sun. not too frantic
rooms - clean, comfortable, well-maintained
food - slightly more off beat than other caribbean resorts we've been too, but certainly tasty and plentiful. except for the desserts which, although look tremendous, are universally tasteless.
pools - large, clean, warm
beach - large, clean, well groomed
ocean - warm, not very clear (sand) so not much good for near-shore snorkeling, but that's my only complaint.
we were there at an off time so never had to wait in line for anything.
our only gripe was the pushy concierge constantly riding us to attend various timeshare presentations. we had to tell him - in no uncertain terms - that we were not interested.
aside from that one guy, i'd definitely recommend this resort as a good family friendly destination.

Our honeymoon 2009
When we first arrived to the Occidental hotel, we were so happy and excited because we had just gotten married. But when we arrived, we were surprised at how unhelpful the staff was. They didn't help us to our room and didn't seem to be very happy to be there. Once we got settled in, however, we began to meet some really nice and amazing people. Although the food was only ok (with the best meal being the last night at the reservation-only restaurant on the beach that you usually have to pay for, but we got it for free because it was our honeymoon) the stunning beauty of the beach was worth it all. Please note that the all inclusive alcohol offered was horrible and if we wanted anything drinkable we had to buy it. Although next time we go to Dominican Republic we will definitely try a different resort, I definitely recommend Punta Cana and the great deals through Cheap Caribbean.
We had a great time on our honeymoon, but the day before they had a bad rain which closed the pools for days. The humidity is so bad and it seemed the a/c couldnt keep up. Dont eat the lettuce or drink the water. or eat anyting washed in the water.

Upon looking at the resort's website http://www.occidentalhotels.com/grand/PuntaCana.asp, it appears that they do have a swim up bar.
