location is great
The hotel was only 20 minutes to the Liberia Airport and no traffic to deal with. It was also near several other beaches and places to go during the day. Cocoa Beach was only 10 minutes away for great Happy hour deals and the night life was awesome. Panama Beach, Hermosa Beach and Bonita Beach were 5 minutes away for different beach options. The monkeys and parrots and Pizotes(Racoon) were all over the hotel property which was cool.. Very relaxing vacation. We upgraded to the Royal Club and were glad we did. It entitled you to first choice dining options and top shelf liquor and free room service, Great ocean view from our room and nice room.

Nice, but wouldn't go back
Occidental Grand Papagayo in Costa Rica is a lovely resort. However, food is not available after 9 or 10 at night and the only bar by the pool closes around 6, so if you are still swimming you have to climb 75 stairs to get drinks. At the buffet my husband and I would be almost finished eating when they would finally fill our water glasses. Beautiful resort, nice employees, but hours for food and bar service are not the best. I would not go back to this resort.
We loved the Occedental Grand Papagayo, the food is really good so far it was the best food we had in all the all inclusives resort we have been.
It's a small resort but the ambiance is really great, we had an upgrade to ocean view and that was really nice, we enjoyed the beautiful/amazing sunset everyday, a familly of monkeys were living their life on the trees in front of our terrace and we enjoyed them, they were quiet just eating and napping :), lots of birds, iguanas, long nose racoons. Nature is beautiful in Costa Rica. We didn't choose this resort for the beach, the water is not the turquoise blue, bring water shoes and a few local people used the beach but no a problem. They only have one pool but it was fine with us.The resort is located 35 minutes from Liberia airport.
We booked the Canopy tour and the Arenal Volcano both a must to do. Dance at the disco place and also when they have live band coming to entertain. We loved the volley ball in the pool had fun playing with the team of the moment. There is lots to do in Costa Rica and the people are really nice....like they said...PURA VIDA! We could connected with the WIFI at the lobby and pool area which help to communicate with your family you can text, skype or facetime on your ipod, ipad or iphone. Definitely will recommend this resort.
In our original room, the air conditioning worked minimally and it had a weird odor to it. It smelled closely to cat urine. The bathroom was outdated and around the resort there were many areas around the building where maintenance was needed. We were transferred to another room where the bathroom was slightly updated but we have stayed at numerous places in the Caribbean that were more luxurious than this one. We felt as if we could have gotten more for our money than what we received at this resort. The airline tickets that were booked is a totally different horror story as we were stuck in Houston for 24 hours without any compensation. To sum it all up, I will never book at another Occidental nor will I EVER fly United Airlines or its affiliates.

Absolutely! Riu Paradise Island has the best buffet ever. so much variety. The food here is better than any cruise I've ever been on! Mangia, it's FREE!
Drinks were amazing too. Beer selection could be better, but the alcohol is as abundant as the ocean! Enjoy.
Roxie1996
Yes unless you order something like a bottle of wine or champagne.
Dozertava
includes both meals and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)
Lowellian
MEALS,ALL DRINKS, AND NON MOTORIZED ACITIVITIES
MRSL600
Yes!!
skilegal
Yes, all drinks are included. However all the alcoholic drinks are severely watered down. I had my fiance try a shot of tequila (she's not a drinker) to confirm my suspicions that they watered the alcohol down.
Javony
Just got back 2 days ago. Yes all drinks and meals are included. There are 2 buffets (the main buffet and the "snack bar", which is alot more than a snack bar) 2 restuarants also included, which need reservations.
JDAllen1
Everything was included, but if you want a buzz order beer. Th mixed drinks and hard liquors were severely watered down.
CatDog
Yes it does!
Louloute
Yes all meals were included and you could choose from the Buffet or a la carte restaurants which were high end Italian and Oriental with the white glove treatment. The Buffet changed menu nightly so you didnt get bored. The drinks were great and they made anything you wanted.

Beach Question9 answers
My husband and I are considering Occidental Grand Papagayo for a Spring 2012 vacation and we have a few questions: is the beach rocky, requiring water shoes? How far is the beach from the hotel? Are there rodent issues at this hotel? Thank you!
Aruba Arriba
We do not have any reports from our clients on file pertaining to the beach being rocky or rodent issues at the resort. According to Trip Advisor, there is a shuttle back and forth from the beach but you do not really need it.
MariaCC
The beach is fine, it is a short walk down a path from the pool. Not very rocky - a few on each side, sandy with some beach chairs & tree lined.
There are monkeys in trees in one section & Coatemundy's (Sp?) (Cute racoon like animals) that we saw a few times, & lots of birds we didn't see any rodents.
skilegal
The water at the beach is brown and the sand has fleas. My fiances and my ankles were bitten up pretty bad after only 15 minutes on the resorts beach. The beach is a short walk from the snack bar (maybe 2 minutes). There are serious rodent issues at the hotel! We opened our sliding glass door for 10 minutes to get the mildew smell out of our room and had a raccoon come into our room with us sitting on the bed. There are pasoles (a Costa Rican rodent that looks like a cross between a raccoon and a possum) everywhere. They wander the snack bar looking for fallen food and knock over drinks at the pool area to eat the fruit. They stole a package of cookies off our lounge chair when we went into the pool to cool off.
Javony
Beach has areas of rocks. Long descend from hotel.
Nukem
Just got back 2 days ago. The beach is not rocky. It is not a beach you would find here in the U.S. either. The sand is clean but mostly black. The water is dark and murky, but clean. The beach is not wide but long and there are trees and plantation on it. The walk from the main lobby is not far. Place was awesome. Highly recommend!
JDAllen1
No beach here. I don't believe there was access to the beach. Most of these hotels are built on hillsides at the coast. The only beach we was was at the sister locale, and it was black muddy sand. One of the nearby villages had a traditional beach.
CatDog
Do not book at this resort. You would be much happier booking at the RIU in the same area. The beach is really rocky and a bit of a walking distance from the resort. Many individuals did not even use the beach due to the distance and I do not think it would be a great place to swim due to all the large rocks in the water. There aren't any rodent issues that I had noticed but if you want to get more for your money, I would book at another resort.
spyke1017
Just came back from this resort.
Yes bring water shoes, some rocks on the beach and some (1 or 2) dead blow fish so better to step on them with water shoes!
No rodent issued when we were there.
Overall Loved it!
Louloute
No the beach is not rocky and just a short walk from any room. The monkeys on the beach were awesome. There were no rodent problems at all. Great clean hotel with impeccable service.
