Beatiful Hotel but Lacking in Areas

Overall the hotel was lovely; however, it was very small and dining was limited. There was only one buffet for dinner and the reservations for the two restaurants were difficult to come by although the one night we actually got in to one of the restaurants, it was empty. The pool/beach towels go by 830am and they are not refilled regardless of what the employees say. I checked back as suggested on 5 different occassions during the day and wound up using bath towels from my room. The gym could use some additional treadmills as well as a working air conditioner. It is important to note that the employees are very friendly and helpful.

Well worth the price

The staff was amazing, and the price was just about the cheapest around, if not the cheapest. It was well worth the money, and the resort, beach, and pool were great. But I still can't speak highly enough about the wonderful staff. If you're looking for a resort-style trip, I highly recommend this one.

Great Food!

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay here. the staff was excellent especially in the dining facilities. I wish we would have brought water shoes to explore the lava areas near the shoreline during low tide. This is a great get away for a few days to refresh. Be sure to take advantage of the travel opportunity to Ri con valley or Nicaragua these were both great! We hope to be back next year!

Absolutely! Riu Paradise Island has the best buffet ever. so much variety. The food here is better than any cruise I've ever been on! Mangia, it's FREE! Drinks were amazing too. Beer selection could be better, but the alcohol is as abundant as the ocean! Enjoy.

Yes, all drinks are included. However all the alcoholic drinks are severely watered down. I had my fiance try a shot of tequila (she's not a drinker) to confirm my suspicions that they watered the alcohol down.

My husband and I are considering Occidental Grand Papagayo for a Spring 2012 vacation and we have a few questions: is the beach rocky, requiring water shoes? How far is the beach from the hotel? Are there rodent issues at this hotel? Thank you!

We do not have any reports from our clients on file pertaining to the beach being rocky or rodent issues at the resort. According to Trip Advisor, there is a shuttle back and forth from the beach but you do not really need it.

The beach is fine, it is a short walk down a path from the pool. Not very rocky - a few on each side, sandy with some beach chairs & tree lined. There are monkeys in trees in one section & Coatemundy's (Sp?) (Cute racoon like animals) that we saw a few times, & lots of birds we didn't see any rodents.

The water at the beach is brown and the sand has fleas. My fiances and my ankles were bitten up pretty bad after only 15 minutes on the resorts beach. The beach is a short walk from the snack bar (maybe 2 minutes). There are serious rodent issues at the hotel! We opened our sliding glass door for 10 minutes to get the mildew smell out of our room and had a raccoon come into our room with us sitting on the bed. There are pasoles (a Costa Rican rodent that looks like a cross between a raccoon and a possum) everywhere. They wander the snack bar looking for fallen food and knock over drinks at the pool area to eat the fruit. They stole a package of cookies off our lounge chair when we went into the pool to cool off.

Since this hotel is built on a hillside the views, especially the sunsets, are spectacular. Add in the great Italian resturant and an awesome pool and you've got a receipe for a great vacation. And the best part is that it's all inclusive.

The walk back up from the beach is slightly uphill, but you'll be refreshed from your relaxing time in the sand anyway.

Good food, great views, fun filled days at the beach and pool and it's all inclusive. What a way to spend some time.
