Resort grounds are very nice. Rooms and bathrooms are large, but furnishings were not what you may expect for a "Grand" property. Dining choices are limited and buffet food was not as good as other all inclusives of this rating. Beach and pools were very nice. Dive operator was ok, safe and well run, but lacked some basic customer service.
Our stay at the Occidental was great. The grounds couldn't be more beautiful, the food was great --better than any cruise that we've been on --and the staff was terrific. Jesus and Daniel should both be promoted before they're hired on by another company. They do an exceptional job, tirelessly running events from morning until night. Also, we were very happy with the great snorkeling right off the sandy beach. We were most pleased with the service that we received from Cheap Caribbean. Our initial flight was delayed, causing us to miss our connecting flight. We thought that we would lose a day of vacation, but Cheap Caribbean made sure that our stay was extended a day at the Occidental and that our ground accommodations were taken care of with no extra charges. We were very impressed. Overall, we couldn't have been more pleased.
If there was one negative, it was the musty smell of our room -- which was huge and very nice. But that's what you get when you stay in tropical paradise. It is a trade off that we would happily accept again.
We vacationed at the Occidental Grand from Jan. 20 to the 27th.
We have been to a number of resorts previous to this one. All over the carribbean.
The people at the resort were Fantastic. Great Service, and always asking us if there is anything they can do for us. I was very impressed by the fact that everyone that I spole to on this resort spoke english. It reminded me a lot of Aruba.
The food was great. We dined at the Royal Club as well as the Mediteranian and the Steak house. All three were absolutely fantastic. Because we stayed there for 8 days, 7 nights, we were only allowed to dine at these places three nights. Even though the buffets were good, I would have preferred to dine there more often.
The buffet breakfast, and lunches were very good. Plenty of variety, and all the food was good.
The beaches were beautiful! You could snorkel right on the beach, and every time I did, which was a lot, it was like diving into an equarium. Absolutely breathtaking! We also went on the glass bottom boak and snorkeled. WOW! That was awsome. The Sunsets were amazing also.
The Spa was small, and cozy, and we did get a nice relaxing massage. They were very good and professional.
The nightly entertainment was better than I've experienced in the past.
This property has a lot of potential. We especially liked the landscaping and even though they were re-doing some walkways , the y were very considerate about the noise and the detours.. The food was so-so- with limited menus and venues( ala carte) , but I still managed to gain my expected weight. The service at the food locations was excellent at alll locations, but I must commend both Arturo and Estaban at the Los Olivos.
The pool water in both pools was too cold and it wasn't just us as there were a few kids that used them, but no adults except for volley ball players. The drinks were bad and great depending on which bartender you got, at least they were hand made and not out of dispensers, so that even the bad ones were better than that.. The beach was nice except for the smoking which at times drove us out of our palapas. The snorkel trips with on site Dive Palancar, was great. Shore snorkeling was ok, but go out to the swim buoys. .

What's the best hotel for children to explore the grounds for wildlife like lizards?3 answers
In addition to a nice beach, our kids would like to have lush vegetation and areas on site where they can explore for wildlife on the ground and in the trees.

This was an awesome resort for lizard watching! My husband and I looked out of our window every morning to find them hiding in the trees! We also found them "posing for photo ops" all over the resort grounds during the day.

What We'd Change
It's a little far from town, making for a decent commute. But cabs are easily found and having someone else drive allows for a lot more sightseeing, anyway.

Hotel Description
Occidental Grand Cozumel: All Inclusive Intimate Luxury
Do you long for the sound of waves in your ear and the feel of sand under your toes? Do you picture yourself on an island, with a lush jungle? You can have it all at Occidental Grand Cozumel. With all inclusive deals, in addition to a quaint Mexican village and some of the best snorkeling and diving the Caribbean has to offer, this 251-room resort is a little slice of paradise.
Surrounded by a secluded nature preserve on the south side of Cozumel, the Occidental Grand Cozumel is on Playa San Francisco, a private section of Cozumel's finest beach. Should you want to stay closer to the action, take your place at one of Occidental's three pools. You can splash around with each other and the munchkins at the designated activities pool. If your idea of paradise is to curl up in the sun with a bestseller, grab a lounge chair by the relaxation pool.
Tank and wetsuit more your speed? You won't find a better place to explore than the waters of Playa San Francisco, which offer spectacular visibility. Discover unparalleled reef diving, with incredible drop-offs, black coral and a network of interconnecting caves and tunnels, which make up the world's second-largest reef network, just off the coast of Occidental Grand Cozumel. Take a deep-sea fishing trip to harvest the fruit of the sea, or grab a paddle and tackle the waves in an all inclusive, complimentary kayak. Are land sports more your bag? Grab a partner and take a few swings at the 18-hole golf course, or try to take match point on one of the four tennis courts.
Now that you've worked up an appetite, plant yourself down at Sonora Grill for tasty steakhouse cuisine, or tell your taste buds to bring their passport, because they're going Italian at Los Olivos for the evening. Be careful not to get too full, though, because Cozumel's nightlife at La Mision bar and nightclub will have you boppin' till you're droppin', way past midnight.
