Occidental Aruba

My biggest disappointment was the additional charge for wifi . The pricing was reasonable but the service was not consistent. You had to strategically place your self through out the resort to get spotty service which did not work most of the time.

I will say that I had a great time on my vacation in spite of all the hiccups along the way. The beach was magnificent and the pool was very lovely too. These things made the vacation. However, the customer service is very poor. Upon arrival we went to make all of our dinner reservations for the restaurants in the hotel since we were staying for six nights. They were only able to accommodate us for four nights unless we wanted to eat at the buffet. My family and I did not want to have breakfast, lunch and dinner in same restaurant for two days. Beside the fact that the first night we were there, they could not accommodate us for dinner in a restaurant. "Eat the buffet!" Is what we were told. We asked if there was anyway they could find a seating for us and they said " no sorry can't help you." This is not what you want to here on the day of your arrival. That pretty much set the tone for dining reservations. BUT the three restaurants we did get to eat at were fantastic and service was great (we went to El Gaucho one night by choice!) Breakfast and lunch are fine. (Buffet with lots of options) lol. The rooms are nice. Standard bed, dresser etc. Our room was warm since the air conditioner did not work and we called the front desk. They had maintenance fix it and all was supposed to be ok. The room never got cold. We called again and maintenance said it was working fine. No it was not! Family members across the hall had a very different temp than my room. All in all the Occidental Hotel is a perfect place to stay if you love the beach. Its location is the best by far. It is a smaller hotel and the distance between pool and beach is perfect. Crazy enough I will go back inspite of the restaurant annoyances. My family loves the beach and if I can overlook some things it is a great place to relax.

An average all-inclusive with lacking night life

We are pretty savvy when it comes to travel and all-inclusive hotels. We decided to go to Aruba for a change because we heard of the superior dwellings and service. We arrived around 3:30 pm and were promptly checked in. Since we have been on many trips like this, we knew to make our a la carte dinner reservations right away in order to get a good time to eat. We still ended up with late times towards the end of our stay. We were not told that the afternoon snack bar had been gutted and that there were no quick burgers and hot dogs or fries. We were kind of disappointed, but it wasn't the end of the world. We did find out by the last 2 days of our stay that the mexican restaurant was serving burgers and hot dogs, but they did not advertise this. kids had to deal with the buffet if they were not aware of this.there was literally nothing for kids to eat that was fast and fun. Buffet was just like every other buffet that we went to over the years. nothing spectacular, nothing outstanding. Breakfast was probably the best meal with eggs to order, bacon, ham and sausage. What this hotel lacks is people. There were not enough servers, bartenders or wait staff. Another HUGE disappointment was the fact that only the lobby bar was open after 7pm. No other bars or clubs. No Casino. The lobby bar had 2 pool tables, lots of seating for the kids, families, old folks and the drunk dads who put their families to bed and were trying to pick up other people's wives. No atmosphere at all. The DJ came on at 10pm and pretty much played some old used up music that a few people danced to. kids running around after midnight is not cool either. NO FOOD after the buffet closes except for premade ham sandwiches with day old bread and cold hot dogs. this was not advertised either, word of mouth only. many people were very upset. The booze was okay in the lobby bar, but at the pool bar or beach bar, they ran out of Mint for Mojitos by day 3 of our visit and beer frequently. This was mind boggling. The beer was Presidente from the Dominican Rep. Why they don't serve the Aruban made beer, Beloshi, is beyond me. It is much better. People were buying their own liquor and beer instead of drinking the all inclusive stuff. The best part of the trip was the beach and water. Rafts were handed out free of charge. This is not a relaxing or peaceful beach as there are dozens of boats, and jet skis towing people very close to the swimming area. THe area outside the hotel was also a plus. Very safe to walk around. However, if you are looking for some Aruban culture, forget it. Burger king, McDonalds, KFC, Benihana, etc are all there. Take the off road trip with the Land Rovers. You will see the interior of the island and partake in some of the sites the island has to offer. All in all, our trip was average. Not great, not bad. We didn't starve, we were comfortable in our room. We would probably not go back to this hotel. Mexico is more accommodating and is half of the price.

Great Vaca..

First & Foremost - if you don't have the Royal Club access, pay the extra money for it.. Well worth it - concierge does their best to ensure you have access to the restaurants (Royal Club offered lamb chops, filet, seafood pasta, etc. all of which were fantastic - the tuna tataki appetizer was incredible - my son had it at least 3x while we were there.. The Hibachi was also terrific - can't go wrong with either of those options. Was is perfect - -no, there are hiccups with every vacation that you go on - not every bit of food was perfect but their certainly was enough variety and quality for anyone. Overall we were very pleased. Beverages are another thing, if you don't do the royal club, you do not have access to premium liquor - the swim up bar is not royal club level so the drinks were mediocre at best - wish they would consider at least having access for the RC members in the pool as it is a downer. The beach is, by far, the best on the strip (either the Occidental or the Hilton (formerly Radisson) are the best options in my opinion The sand is great. As you walk past the Hyatt and down to the Ritz Carlton you will start to walk on stones or shells - at the Occidental they use a machine to turn the sand every morning while the others just rake - I think it makes a huge difference in purity. The rooms were clean & the staff came by at least 3x a day (at least on the RC levels). As noted in other reviews, the WiFI is horrible - but then again, you're on vacation, let it go... :) Aruba beaches in general - we were there 20 years ago, there weren't as many huts or piers - made for a more relaxing vacation. Now there are excursions and rental equip etc. I liked it better before. The Hyatt was something that I remembered with the Parrots and other birds being closer to the path and good visibility into their pool area - now it felt congested with all of the rental equipment, etc. out front - kind of a shame really.. That said, it still was a beautiful area.
