Cayo Levantado: crown jewel of Bahia Principe

So let's get the bad out of the way first. The beds in this resort are super firm. Some might say rock hard. My back ached, but I still loved this resort enough, I'm planning a return trip. Second, if you're flying in from the USA, you'll fly into Santo Domingo. It's a 2.5-3 hour taxi ride to Cayo Levantado in the Samana district. You will see enough poverty in those hours to last a lifetime. Expect to pay $200-225 for the taxi. Now the good stuff. The Dominican Republic is the friendliest nation in the world. The fact that they are desperately poor, in no way dampens the spirits of these happy people. The average annual salary is equivalent to about $1500 US dollars. Everything at the resort is priced in US dollars, so there's no need to exchange currency. I was happy that I brought a few extra dollars in cash. I felt like John D Rockefeller handing my server $1 after meals. When I handed the maitre d' a five dollar bill this morning, he was shocked! Turns out, only Americans are known to tip, and few were to be found here. Lots of Canadians and Germans, but very few Americans. Bring a hundred bucks in $1 & $5 and change a life ( well maybe not a life, but $5 is about three days wages there!). The food was uniformly excellent. The buffet in the main building changed every day, and unexpectedly was not the same old bland all inclusive buffet fare! The only disappointment was a slightly soggy take on pizza, and a Chef Boyardee worthy spaghetti sauce. Yet there were always a dozen other options, with wonderful pastries and cheese platters, fresh fruit and thin slices of smoked ham. Service was outstanding, with waiters, butlers and electric cart drivers on call 24/7. The resort is on an island, built along a pretty tall hill. Paved streets of brick curve throughout the property, providing excercise if you were so inclined. On the other hand if you weren't in the mood to walk up a hill, any staff member would cheerfully call one of the electric carts to carry you wherever you wished to go. I never waited more than three minutes for my "cab" to arrive. There are two pools, one of which is located next to the beach, with towel huts at each pool location. There are effectively two beaches, divided by a narrow spit of land. The one has a steeper incline and gets some wave action, the other is effectively sheltered by a couple smaller coral islands and is pretty placid. This beach has a gentle slope and has excellent fish watching opportunities, even if you're just waist deep. Grab a dinner roll and feed the fish provided lots of cheap entertainment. While we were there, from the 7th-14th of April, the crowd was mostly an older set, with prosperous folks aged 45-80. A few twenty somethings occasionally wandered in, looking a bit lost. On the plus, you won't feel self conscious if you've put on a few winter pounds. On the negative, if you were looking for party central, this isn't it. Bahia Principe's Cayo Levantado is their premier resort in their 27 resort chain. It's a bit pricier than some other options, and a bit of a drive to get to, but it was worth every dollar and mile it cost. Now I just need to figure out when I'm going back.

We LOVED It!! Great 25th Anniversary!

This was the only small island with only 1 All Inclusive resort on it that we could find for around $5k - this fact coupled with the fantastic service that we experienced made this a 5 star resort for my wife and I...you can't beat it! We Got home 12 hours ago after staying here for 10 days. In that time, it rained only 4.5 hours during day light hours, we lucked-out! I heard it is typically like that, though not always of course. BIG shout outs to Wenny who works the Lobby Bar! And also Jameson, who books sessions with the on-resort professional photographer. These 2 guys are HUGE assets to the Gran Bahia resorts. Always quick with a sincere smile and hand shake, they always seemed to seek us out. We highly recommend the on-site photographer. Be sure to say hi to Jameson! For those of us in the US, it is a 3 hour transport from the SDQ airport to the resort. What I will do in the future when we visit this resort is: book a separate adjoining flight to the Samana airport, which is a 30 minute drive to the Cayo Levantado pier, where you catch the 10 minute ferry ride to the island. The driving in the DR is CRAZY, so this will give me peace of mind by shortening our driving time. Are there any negatives to this resort and island? Sure, but nothing huge and no resort is perfect. Like I said, you can't find another small island with ONE resort anywhere near this price point. The service is truly OUTSTANDING. Can't wait to go back. BTW, we are in our mid-forties. a lot of younger couples there, as well as older couples. I'd say the average age was mid-forties.

A few small details away from "Great"

Pros: Island & grounds are beautiful Extremely clean Great staff & service in the bars & a la carte restaurants Food and drinks are great Very laid back & flexible Private beaches not crowded at all. Public beach also was good. Cons: Car ride to wrap up an already long day of travel is rough. If you can find a way to fly into Samana direct, do so With a little attention to detail, this resort would be great -- air conditioning would drip condensation onto the floor near the bathroom. Bathroom shower would allow water onto the floor. Service in the buffets was problematic. Evening activities so/so. Don't ruin a great idea like Beach disco with a 1 hour limbo followed by having the male guests try and dance sexy for the girl lucky enough to win the limbo challenge. Also don't waste our time with the time-share sell job. Would I do it again and have no regrets on this purchase? Yes in a heartbeat. However I think because of the few small details I will give other locations a try first - may end up coming back after broadening my experience and level-setting my expectations.
