We were taken back with some of the staff and people at this resort. We were greeted and treated well by the reception team. Only suggestion would be that they inform the guest of the different buffet times (breakfast, lunch and dinner).
The bellhop was EXCELLENT Kirk! The food staff was excellent as well as the spa staff Karen and Marsha treated us well.
Some of the other staff members did not speak, would look the other way, didn't ask us how our stay was going. We even experienced some unfriendly guest and their families.
The room accommodations are nothing like they're depicted in the pictures - not bad but the resort needs to be upgraded.
We just returned from our 3 night stay on May 5th, and are very pleased with the resort. When we arrived via the shuttle from the airport, the staff took our bags and let us know they were there to help us relax. During check-in, Christina had us sit down on one of the sofas in the open-air lobby, while someone quickly brought us the drink of the day to sip on as we waited. Check-in was quick and easy, and someone showed us to our room. The rooms are nothing special, but sufficient. The cleaning staff came thru twice a day-once in the morning to clean our room and again in the evening to do turn-down service.
What we noticed was that as we went on our early morning walks on the beach and around the property, the staff was out cleaning everything, hand raking the beach, preparing the breakfast buffet.. The grounds are beautifully maintained. The staff works very hard. It truly is a beautiful resort. The beach is about 350 yards long, and there are plenty of lounge chairs available. Never a problem there! The pools are nice. We hung out at the infinity pool, which has a swim up bar. It overlooks the ocean, and is very nice. The only suggestion I would have for the manager would be to designate that pool as an adults only pool, as some people were bringing smaller children there because it's only about 31/2 ft deep. They need a children's area, but I hear they are working on a water park nearby.
The food was good. The buffet breakfast had a great selection, including fresh local fruit. Overall, I would say the food is acceptable. Some may expect a higher quality, but we were both pleased with the food. All of the eating areas, other than the Italian restaurant, are open-air. Very nice to eat your breakfast overlooking the ocean!
One thing I would like to note was that we had a photographer take pictures of us on the beach at sunset. They have photographers taking pictures of patrons throughout the day, and you can go see them later if you wish. I asked if they would take some of us at a specified time, and they told us to come at 6pm and the photographer would be ready. There was no charge to have him take these photos of us. He spent about 15 minutes taking pictures, and after dinner we went and looked at them. Very beautifully done! We bought a CD with pictures, which I felt were reasonably priced considering what you would pay in the States to have a sitting and receive pictures!
Overall, I would highly recommend this resort. Wonderful staff, beautiful grounds, food is decent, and it's all inclusive. And if you're wondering, we didn't pay a cent over what we paid upon booking this. Drinks offered left and right by the staff, never charged for anything unless we went to the gift shop or bought pictures. No hidden charges. They even have snorkeling gear you can use (no charge), a trip out on the glass bottom boat, kayaks, sailboats-all free to use. So if you've been looking at other resorts, stop now and just book the Jewel Runaway Beach and Golf Resort! I will be returning again for sure!
My husband and I consider ourselves avid cruisers, however this was our first time visiting an all inclusive resort and WOW! Our stay was this past February. We were more than impressed with every aspect of the Jewel! It is truly All-Inclusive! We fell in love with the wonderful staff on the first day! They were extremely friendly and new our names within the first day or two and treated us like family! The resort itself is spectacular, with spacious rooms, huge clean pools, and one of the cleanest and clearest beaches we've seen in the Caribbean! Just a couple feet into the water we could see sea urchin, baby marlins, and huge schools of Sargent Major fish that would eat right out of your hand! The views were breathtaking. We enjoyed going out on the glass bottom boat (no extra charge) and seeing the huge reef, all the fish and even a sting ray! In the past we have payed for private catamarans in the Caymans and Bahamas, and honestly these reefs were much better!
And then there's the food! Ahhh...amazing! We were accustomed to cruise buffets and dining, but the selection and variety at the Jewel is above all else! We loved our breakfast with Egg Boy AKA the Human Atlas, and Joel who makes the best omelets ever! We met several different wait staff but our favorite was Claudia! All the restaurants were great! Our favorite was a tie between the Italian restaurant and the Japanese hibachi! The nice thing was that you could eat at any of them and there were also events every night serving food like Jamaican Jerk on the beach, and dinner at the poolside! I'm not sure any other vacation will ever be up to par with Jewel!
The entertainment was great and especially lively when 'Purple' and 'Barbie' were around. On our last night we got to see a performance by a steel drum band called the Silver-birds and words wouldn't even do them justice! They were definitely one of a kind and ridiculously talented.
A lot of our time was spent at and around the swim up bar which included an infinity pool. The chairs and towels were plentiful and the drinks were strong and always flowing! I loved laying by the infinity pool and at most points you couldn't see were it stopped and the ocean began. It was every definition of PURE BLISS! We enjoyed talking to the ever friendly staff including Keron at the swim up bar.
If you go to this resort you must try the fun daily drinks and the "Dirty Banana"! If you don't prefer alcohol there are frozen virgin strawberry daiquiri and pina-colada machines at several of the bars!
In February only my husband and I visited and only for 6 nights, but after one trip we are in love with the Jewel and it's staff and we are on the countdown to our next (longer) vacation there with our children this July!
There are so many things to do and we are excited to go snorkeling and maybe to Dunn River Fall's this time.
If you haven't been to the Jewel at Runaway Bay, I can promise you, you will not be disappointed!
Having never done an all-inclusive package through cheapcarribbean, I was hesitant about what we would encounter. My group of companions had no reason to worry!
This is a very low key property. It is not the typical huge resort with thousands of other patrons. Some of the decor is outdated, however it's very clean and well-kept. The pools are in great condition and you can always find a chair or hammock to lounge on.
In terms of being all-inclusive, everything truly is included. You are able to eat at any restaurant, any number of times with no limits. Drinks are generous and available all day and night. There is also a 24 hour grill. The only thing that costs extra is room service, depending on what room type you have, but the items range in cost from $2-6 (fish, chicken, pizza, etc).
Overall we felt this was a great property with good food and drinks, and friendly staff. Because it is generally quiet and low key, we also got to know many other guests and met some great people.

where is the best all-inclusive spot where you don't need a passport?3 answers
2 years, 26 months ago
Barbie
The only two destinations that do not require a US passport are Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico has no all inclusive resorts. USVI St Thomas has three and USVI St Croix has one. The best way to search is to select Hotel on the Cheap Caribbean home page-then select Hotel Finder. You are then able to customize your search according to your specific needs. Scroll down destinations until you get to USVI St. Thomas, and select all inclusive. Enter, All the All inclusive resorts in St. Thomas will appear.
CCSusan
in St.Thomas there is a couple but you would save a lot of money by just getting a pass port and shoping the other islands or mexico
bigal1949
First, if you can get on an airline without a passport (doubtful), you have to stick to US territories such as the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Get a passport. It's well worth it because there are a lot of great places available with a passport.

when is the cheap time to go7 answers
1 year, 21 months ago

Travel tends to be cheaper from August to November (which also happens to be the high point of hurricane season), and times that are not around major holidays. However, CheapCaribbean.com is always offering great specials and sales, so we suggest checking back often for the best pricing.
KristinCC
September and October is the cheapest time, but it's quieter that time of year and you run the risk of getting some rain in the late afternoon. If you are going for a wedding (yours or someone else's), you'll love it. The chapel on the beach is lovely - we saw several weddings while we were there.
carnic72
We just returned and were surprised how cheap it was in October. Eventhough it was the rainy season, we saw less than 1/2 hr. of rain the whole week. We are looking to go again in January and the price is close to double for that time of the year:(

Hurricane season :)
RET22
I always book for January, February or March. Things change. In January there was no non-stop from Milwaukee; in March there was. (Non-stop is a little cheaper.) Check out the weather forecasts and stay away from the hurricane and rainy seasons. When you book on-line you can vary your departure date over several months - before hitting the confirm button - and see what the rates will be.

Can we renew our wedding vows at the Jewel Runaway bay?6 answers
My wife and I are planning our 6year wedding anniversary to the Jewel resort from 7/19/13-7/28/13. I would like to surprise her by renewing our wedding vows. Can this be done and would the cost be included?
Suitland Maryland
Weddings would need to be arranged directly through the resort. For information on the resort's wedding packages, the contact information on their website is weddingsdunnsriver@jewelresorts.com or phone #1-800-951-2997.
MariaCC
It is a beautiful site for a wedding or vow renewal. There was a wedding while we were on vac.I do not know about course but I think it may cost extra.
1happycouple
They have a nice chapel on the beach. Go to resort website and hit contact us. They get right back to you. Not sure if there is a charge, but it is a nice chapel with seating for about twenty people. Looks out to beach.
GeorgeO
Therwas a wedding performed during our stay, and they do have an outside chappel on th beach, but you would have to contact th resort as to a preacher, and any consequent cost, but being an all inclusive I can't believe there would be any additional cost.
Buckwheats
The resort offers many things for couples including candle light dinners on beach, renting out the cabanas, etc, so you will definitely be able to renew wedding vows, but all of the above does cost extra. It ranges from $50 to $200 depending on what you want. I recommend once checking into resort, you ask the front desk or concierge of all your options - they are all very helpful!
RET22
Yes. There is a wedding gazebo at the resort. Make sure you mention it is a renewal of vows because there are guidelines to follow if you are getting married for the first time. (I'd take along a copy of your marriage certificate.) Renewal of vows would not be included in the price.

Please be advised that it would be best contacting the resort directly for any specific questions regarding their property. The email address from the resort's website to contact them directly is reservationsrunawaybay@jewelresorts.com.
MariaCC
I think so did not see any negative indications.
1happycouple
I noticed a few gay and lesbian coules at the resort and noone seemed to have any difficulty with them
Buckwheats
It was pretty clear in the area that they are not very accepting to gay and lesbian couples in Jamaica.
I had called my husband a "funny guy" on an excursion, and it freaked out our bus driver. Apparently that's a very derogatory remark (meaning what you think it means) and he was highly offended that I would call my husband that...
I don't think they are very tolerant- it's a shame.
Warmlover
Jamaican culture is not big on the gay community and you will receive comments and looks. The area is beautiful though and worth the visit, but I do not consider Jamaica gay friendly.

Yes. The bars open at 10 am and there is no limit.

all drinks as much as you want a fair variety but I would consider them good but not top shelf never the less the bars are plentiful and the service is the best, also it is nice to tip a dollar or so even though it is all inclusive the staff really appreciates it
bigal1949
No limit whatsoever and the barstaff will add extra booze if the drink seems light. Many brought their own extra large mugs and those were filled without question.
BillDon44
Yes, and no limits on anything

Alcohol included. No limit. They do have premium liquor at no additional charge.
MbJersey
Alcohol is included and as much as you want with a menu of prepared drinks or they will mix up just about anything you ask for. :) Pack an insulted mug for cold Red Strip on the beach--it's better than those little plastic cups and they'll fill them up. There's a bar inside, on the beach, and a swim up bar at the infinity pool. :)
Mjmegtor
All-inclusive includes alcohol and there is no limit. I also recommend tipping the bartender because then they will add more alcohol to your drinks.

Yes, after you get your suit cases you enter a new terminal go to the far left hand side and look for JTL transportation they are the ones who take you there
bigal1949
As soon as you get off the plane they ask you which resort you are going to and take you to that shuttle destination. Very easy.
LyndaSteve
Upon arrival and exiting the terminal a porter will take your bags to the complimentary shuttle bus. Trip takes about an hour or so, possibly more if the driver stops for lunch as ours did.
BillDon44
Once you clear customs go to counter 21 and they will provide you with transportation
Buckwheats
As soon as you land there are people there to direct you and make it very easy for you to get on the appropriate shuttle to your hotel.
MbJersey
Once you arrive and go through customs, ask for the "Cheap Caribbean" desk. Once you check in there, they direct you outside where there is a bar (it's vacation, mon!) and a litany of shuttle busses; there will be several people out there helping "direct" traffic and just explain which resort you need to go to and they will put you on the appropriate shuttle.

greens fees were complimentary; $35 for a cart and $25 for a caddie for 2 players for 18 holes.

bigal1949

Buckwheats
Greens fees are free. You have to take a caddy and it is $17. If you want a cart, it was another $25 for 18 holes. The course is just ok. Doesn't get much play so getting a round in under 4 hours is quite easy.

I didn't golf but I understand that golf is not free. At the very least you have to pay for the caddy, which is cheap. The courses I saw were very nice.

There are many excursions available and you can either book them on-line when you book your vacation or book them on-site. It's easier on-site and you can view pamphlets to see what you are getting. Not all are available every day but the concierge can answer these questions on-site. I'd highly recommend the day trip to the horticultural park, shopping and Dunns River Falls.

DebD
The Jewel Runaway Bay is going to be a family friendly resort; however, their sister property, the Jewel Dunn's River, is an adults only resort.
LaurenCC
There was a kid's area (day care looking place) and there were families here and there but the overwhelming majority was couples and young singles.
travelmaniac
recently changed to include activities for families. It is a nice resort for either.
Rocket14
Was just there last week. I would call this resort "family friendly," not really geared towards adults or families specifically. There were families present at the resort, but not terribly many. There were not many kids running around screaming. I believe that they have programs for kids during the day and the kids were mostly out of sight.
MbJersey
Just got back from Jewel and LOVED it. Resort was mostly adults, age range 35 - 75, some families and singles, but vast majority adult couples.
RET22
This is a Family Friendly vacation spot. There were several families that had kids with them at the resort. If your looking for "adults only" this is NOT the place.
Iwannavacationnow
It went family-style last November. We went the end of January and for the first 6 days there were very few (<5) kids. The last 2 days saw more kids and only a couple were out of control but I'd blame that on the parents who allowed it. (I'd have thought that the resort would've stepped in, but they didn't.)
Woody1
Mostly adults there, but saw a few families here and there. I think it's more of an adult destination. Very quiet, lots of nice folks, and due to being low key, you tend to meet other travelers hanging out at the bars or pools.

Yes, they are all "all-inclusive" with the only difference being in-room ammenties. For example, we booked a premier guest room and had water, and a couple cans of soda in our fridge, but our friends in a plunge pool room had bottles of red stripe in their fridge.

There is no sign up sheet anywhere. Just arrive at the tennis courts and a staff member will radio for the tram to pick you up. Don't make my mistake of playing as a single. Had to wait behind the 4 foursomes in front of me. Took forever and there was no place to go.

We asked about this. When you arrive, you can go talk to someone there that will tell you the times you can go and give you prices for renting clubs, a cart, etc. There was a required caddy charge. You don't need to arrange this before you arrive. We didn't end up golfing, but it didn't sound like it would have been a problem to go had we wanted to. Rooms are limited to 2 double beds or a king bed. I really didn't see any rooms that would accomodate 5 adults and a child. (If you are booking an all-inclusive, split up the adults because the room is already paid for.)

Are there jet ski rentals?5 answers

Ladyli
Jet Skis are not available for use at this resort.
LaurenCC
No just came from there and didn't see any jet skis... There is a natural reef that is just past the swimming area that looks like it would not be advised to have jet skis on that beach.
Iwannavacationnow
Yes.
Woody1
no, not at this resort
AFPP
No, I didn't see any jet ski's for rent. They did have kyack's and small sailboats you can use for no charge.

How far are stores and markets to buy fare (liquor, coffee, etc) to bring back home? Do the hotel provide taxis to use if we want to go out at night?6 answers
1 month ago
Ladyli
The resort will be able to suggest some of the best shopping areas and they are able to call a cab for you, but they do not provide the service.
LaurenCC
Taxis will take you where you want to go. I'm not sure how far away stores are to buy stuff off site as we didn't need to do that, but there is a shuttle to Ocho Rios where you can do shopping for the day.
kmp9
There are no stores near the resort but the resort has a shop where you can buy these. If you take a shopping trip during the day there are plenty of stores with liquor and coffee. (Note that they all give out free samples. I bought liquor and coffee, but I think the coffee is over-priced. Cigarettes are New York prices.) Think about buying at the duty-free shops at the airport on the way out. It's far cheaper.
Yes. You can get a taxi but town is a long way off. I don't know their prices. There is entertainment nightly at the resort and the bars are well stocked.
Woody1
There is a liquor store right down the road and yes you can get a taxi we used a guy named Wayne he was very nice and his prices were very reasonable.
mfloes
There is so much fun going on at the resort you will not need to leave for night life. But is you still want to they do have taxis you can take. We just bought our beer/liquor at the gift shop but when we got to the airport to go home we should've waited... the duty Free shopping was cheap!
bevkik
Pretty far away, unless you walk down the beach to one of the little huts that sell goods... They are pretty persistent, so I would probably just buy some coffee, souvenirs, etc in the gift shop. They can call taxis for you, but there is also a little disco on the property that you can make your own!

Types of beer available2 answers
Besides red stripe is there any other beer choices? Is it all draft beer? Is there a store on site to buy other types?
Ohio
Beer varieties will vary depending on the season in which you are traveling, and the restaurant or bar you order at. Please contact the resort directly for the most up-to-date information on current beer selections available at the bars and restaurants located on the resort property.
BILLCC
Red Stripe and Red Stripe Light are the main tap beers. There are other options available in the gift shop. I didn't ask the bars for anything but Red Stripe, so I'm not sure if there are other bottles available.

Is there smoking rooms
vamhart
Majority of resorts do not allow smoking in rooms. However you can smoke on the balcony and outside areas.
CaitlinCC
I smoke, Every Room has a patio or a Balcony, so you can smoke outside of your room, no worries :)
AFPP
I'm not sure if there are smoking rooms, but we had a balcony which my boyfriend went out on for smoking. It appeared all rooms either had a balcony or walk out from what I could see.

Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort offers five programs for kids, from infants to teens. That includes excursions and activities that are both fun and educational.
CaitlinCC
I do not have kids but did have a good look at the kids area. It's indoors with 2-3 staff members. There were never more than 3 kids in the play area, which meant they each had one-on-one time with a caregiver. There were activity tables, toys, etc. There are big windows where you can observe, too. I wouldn't worry-overall the staff is very responsible!

There’s even a “Paparazzi” snapping photos when the kids least expect it during their scheduled activities. Any American Beer Offered with the "All Inclusive" Package?1 answer
Just wondering what beer, other than Red Stripe, is offered at the resort.
New Orleans, LA
That is a great question. We don't have access to their menus, as they can change at any time. What I can do is give you their email address, and you can ask them if there are any American beers offered at their resort and which ones. Their email address is reservationsrunawaybay@jewelresorts.com
Thank you!

What We'd Change
This lively resort isn't for those looking for a quiet getaway, and all the activity can be overwhelming. If the pace gets too hectic, book a rejuvenating spa treatment and let the hustle and bustle fade away.

The Jewel has been completely remodeled and is now completely family-friendly. Plus, they still have complimentary greens fees at transportation to the world-class golf course next door.

Hotel Description
Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort Shines in Jamaica
When the pace of life has gotten too fast, toss your everyday concerns to the
wayside and make tracks for an exciting beach vacation at Jewel Runaway Bay
Beach & Golf Resort in Jamaica! With free airport transfers, three great pools, a luxurious spa and
a beautiful beach, we're sure you will be living the island life in no time.
Perched on Jamaica's beautiful northern coast, this recently renovated resort
offers a gem of an all-inclusive deal. This sparkling getaway includes upscale
accommodations, loads of water and beach activities, delicious meals at six
unique restaurants and a free greens fees at the PGA-quality golf course next
door.
The road to relaxation starts with sinking your toes in the warm, sugary
sand before claiming a hammock strung between two waving palms. To really get
in the spirit, sip on something cool while watching the inviting water bounce
against the Caribbean clouds. Don't forget to try a "Gem of the Day" - it's the
Jewel's daily signature cocktail. Worried about the kids? Don't be. Jewel has a
brand new kids' and teens' lounge that offers plenty of great activities and
programs. Knowing the kids are happy and well cared for, you'll want to rustle
up a little activity yourself. So grab a complimentary kayak and high-five the
waves just beyond the beach.
When things get too warm, cool off at the infinity pool, where the expert
mixologists at the swim-up bar can whip up a refreshing "Jamaican Waterslide"
to help re-energize your soul. Still too hot? Ask the pool concierge to bring
you eucalyptus-infused misting spray and a skewer of fresh fruit.
If a snack won't cut it, enjoy Jamaican specialties at Coral Cafe's buffet.
Or, for a little Far Eastern fare, Jade Samurai serves up delicious Japanese
dishes prepared teppanyaki-style. The temperature may cool off after sunset,
but that's no reason you can't heat things up with your honey over a romantic
Italian dinner. Try Moonstone by Vincenzo for a la carte specialties from both
northern and southern Italy.
After dinner, the fun continues late into the night with live entertainment,
theme nights and a wonderful dive-in movie night. Who could imagine catching a
flick at the pool with a bowl of Jamaican jerk popcorn could be so fun? After a
fun-filled day, get some shut-eye to the sound of the waves echoing through
your luxurious room. When life starts wearing you down, look toward Jewel
Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort to replenish your spirits in the joys of
island life!
