Imagine opening your front door and, instead of city sights and sounds, there are toucans flashing by and monkeys chattering in the trees. That's how close the wildlife is at Iberostar Tucan Hotel in Playa del Carmen: 28 acres of lush jungle literally right outside the front door and home to monkeys, coatis, flamingos, iguanas, agoutis and peacocks! The ecosystem is part of the appeal of this Mayan Riviera family getaway. Kids get a kick out of exploring along stone walkways winding through the forest, pointing out tropical fish in the lagoons and posing with Mayan-inspired statues.

great location, beautiiful beach
The Tucan is a very nice resort. Extremely well maintained with a friendly courteous staff. The pools are nice, lots of lounge chairs and a lot of shade if you need to get out of the sun. The beach is phenomenal and the water is crystal clear. Our room was great, cool, spacious and clean with a nice balcony. The beds were VERY firm. We knew that ahead of time and brought some mattress pads with us. My real issues were the pool closed too eary (7pm) and that for the most part, the food is mediocre at best. The reservation specialty restaurants were a cut above the buffets, but still nothing to get too excited about. Also, the drinks were mediocre, but since we are not big drinkers, it didn't matter that much. If your prime goal is a beautiful beach, this definitely fills the bill. If excellent dining is mandatory, keep looking.

I want to thank Cheap Caribbean for their amazing job in making this family vacation an awesome experience. I called not knowing who this organization was and explained to the travel counselor what I was trying to accomplish as a final gift to my wife and kids from their grandfather & "Dad" who passed away last May. He spent much time on the phone with me asking questions and researching option and said he would make it happen with in the price that I gave him and came up with the Iberostar Tucan. It was more than we expected and may family has some wonderful memories from the trip. It was a great set up for a 27,26 and 23 year old to have fun without any worries on mom & my part. Thanks Iberosatr and a special thanks to Cheap Caribbean & Liam!!!!!
We just arrived back to the states from Iberostar Tucan. We had a great time.
Positives: We were welcomed with a COLD drink, a Congo. Check in was flawless.
I could not have asked for more from the housekeepers. Our room was always very clean . She went above and beyond to make sure we had a good stock of refreshments...sprite, coke, beer, and lots of water. There were always little characters made out of towels.
Hospitality was the best. We never wanted for anything. no matter where we were at on the resort. We were always asked if we needed anything and service was quick.
The jungle and wildlife was beyond our expectations. The peacocks sure were proud. Walking the path to the beach was a new experience each and every time. I just wished we had stayed in building 13 or 14 to get a better monkey experience.
The Star team was incredible. Very good shows, and very friendly team. One dancer in particular, Heather was extremely nice and friendly not to mention an awesome dancer. They work so hard day and night to please the guests.
The pool bar is a little secluded but wasn't really an issue. We met a lot of nice people I will keep in touch with forever.
Only 2 negatives: The food on the buffet was repetitious, partly our fault...we only made reservations for one night at the Tropicale, which was really tasty. The only other negative is I thought there would have been more ocean view rooms. There is only one one ocean view building.
I would definitely return to this resort, it was just an awesome experience.
Overall, we were happy with the resort but will most likely try something different next time. We are both animal people and were drawn to the fact that the resort is set in a jungle atmosphere. We were not disappointed with that..every walk to the pool/beach was tons of fun. Monkeys, peacocks, iguanas, etc. As a young couple, we got a little bored at night. I am not sure if it was the time of the season or it is just a better resort for a calmer vacation or for families. Some things I wish were different....I wish there was a hottub somewhre on the resort. The swim up bar is seperated from the pool and in a shaded cove so my hopes of spending my day in the pool at the swim up bar didnt work out. Food is decent; steakhouse was the best. Last complaint, mattresses are hard as a rock!

How is the beach at the Iberostar Quentzel resort6 answers
Is the beach smooth sand with no rocks? What is the resort like?

The beach at Iberostar Quetzal is somewhat small and has been subject to errosion over the past few years. The resort is doing what they can to correct this however by rebuilding and sand-bagging the beach to keep it in tip-top shape! We have a few reviews on our website under the "ratings and reviews" section (found here http://agents.cheapcaribbean.com/core/resortAvailability/cc.3197.html) that can give you some first hand information about the property itself!

The beach was great! We never wore watershoes. The flipflops came off the minute our feet hit the sand. It isn't necessarily smooth sand right down to the waters edge because of the coral and shells that wash up, but it wasn't painful on your feet, it was just more texture. Not a single rock to be found. The waves are perfect if you have kids who are steady on their feet. Take swim rings for the kids or yourself and ride the waves in to shore. You can touch for quite a ways out. The resort was just awesome! It felt very safe at all times. The food was plentiful and varied. Americans are definitely the minority here. If your room is up by the entrance, which ours was, you walk through a fabulous rainforest to get to the beach--just a 10 min. stroll. There were peacocks strutting across our path and monkeys flying through the trees overhead. We saw a couple of the shows in the evenings and 2-3 times a week, there are vendors who are allowed to set up tables near the restaurants---JEW the heck out of them. They have some very fine solid Sterling jewelry (unlike the silver plated that the higglers on the beach are hocking!) It was just great---you should go!

We stayed on the Tucan side. The beach is not rocky at all. There was a slight dropoff (just one big step) when entering the water, then nice and smooth. I just entered a review you can read. We did speak to people staying at other resorts, and this seemed like the best beach of them all.
LittleMargarita
No rocks...just white sand. I went on my honeymoon back in June and we are going to try to go back every year. We loved this place. The resort is VERY CLEAN they have excellent customer service food is great, I reccomend it to everyone I speak to..
Joey1984
Beach is beautiful. Resort is like a mini jungle.
KTLynn
The beach is absolutely beautiful. The sand is so white and the water is so blue. Swimming is great.
penney
The beach is phenomenal. 40-60 yards of sand from resort grounds to water's edge, lots of chairs, virtually NO rocks, even well out into the ocean. We were very impressed with the cleanliness and beauty. Highly recommend doing the parasailing. It was great.

I am worried about dress codes in many restaurants at Tucan...CLose toe shoes?2 answers

Ada
Most resorts have a required dress code for their restaurants. Not all resorts have the same dress attire, however, the requirements are ultimately at the resort's descretion.
MariaCC
We just got back. Don't know that I saw any eveidence closed toe shoes were enforced or even required. Long pants for men, but it seemed that wans't strictly enforced either.

the best room location for family with children at Tucan2 answers
Hi, we are traveling with two small children and I am wondering what is the best room location (So we are not too far from pool, beach, restaurants, etc.....ideally in the middle of it all, but quiet.

Ada
Rooms are assigned upon arrival at the resort so room placement at the resort is unable to be guaranteed. Availability is based on the resort's occupancy level upon check in.
MariaCC
Bldg 1000 is on the beach, bldgs 1100, 1200 & 1300 are by the pools. The buildings are three floors with no elevators. You might want to request a ground floor or 2nd at most with kids to manage.

Hotel Description
Iberostar Tucan Hotel: It's a Jungle Out There
Imagine opening your front door and, instead of city sights and sounds, there are toucans flashing by and monkeys chattering in the trees.
Relax under a palapa while the sounds of the jungle mingle with the tumble of the surf on the resort's stunning sandy beach. The enormous, lake-style pool seems like a rainforest river, conveniently equipped with a swim-up bar for sipping mai tais. The wildlife is drawn by the smell of food, as you undoubtedly will be, at the resort's nine restaurants in raised platforms overlooking the lagoons. From the unagi at El Bonsai to ravioli at La Gondola, you'll have plenty of options. When night falls and jungle sounds fill the air, check out La Plaza Theatre Bar for culture-rich variety shows, or shake and shimmy at La Mascara Disco.
Whether you like to coast or let it rip full-throttle, Iberostar Tucan Hotel lets guests vacation at their own speed thanks to the all inclusive perks: kids can get crafty with balloon animals and crayons at Lucy's Club, while adults take catamarans and kayaks out on the water. Rack up the balls for a game of billiards or practice your jump shot. When you've given those muscles a workout, stop by the on-site spa for the cucumber-mint body treatment; it works miracles on tired legs.
After a day of sun and fun, there's nothing like flopping down on a comfy bed for a great night's sleep, and the standard guestrooms make it possible. Whether you're traveling with friends, someone special, or the entire family, the room's big enough for everyone to catch their Zzzs.
