Third Time is a Charm

Our third trip to Tucan/Quetzal last week (Sept 9-16) was as good as we remembered. Nice place; great value; wonderful staff; good food; lots of activities; lush landscape; wildlife (flamingo flocks, monkeys, peacocks with chicks; etc). The rooms are very nice and our clean up lady, Anallely, always cleaned to perfection, left us with plenty of bottled water and made the cutest towel animals. The AC worked very well. One thing we noticed was that if there was no motion in the room for a certain amount of time, the electricity turned off; such as when we left to go anywhere. When we came back we immediately saw lights and fan come back on and electronics make the sound that they were charging again. HINT: Be sure to charge electronics at night because while you're out, they will not charge. The Star Friends staff and regular staff were absolutely the best!! They are so kind, friendly, and helpful at all times! Kudos to Diana, Giovanni, Karlos for always smiling and encouraging all to participate!!! As another guest who was there for their 20th time!!! said, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?!" We agree and will plan another trip to Tucan!

Great family vacation w/ teenagers (8/12 - 8/19)

This is our 2nd time staying at the Iberostar Tucan. We are never disappointed. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. All areas are clean and the food is very good. The vacation club presentation was a bit much. It took 3 hours to finally get out and enjoy the rest of the day. It's overpriced and the reviews we found online were all discouraging. Vacation ownership at the Iberostar is not for us. Needless to say we will visit an Iberostar resort again. The beach by far is the nicest in the area. The proximity of the pool and the beach are perfect. Bring a float that easily fits in your suitcase. Or cheap one that you can leave behind. The towel station has a convienent air pump to use. We had such a wonderful time in 2015 that we vacationed with additional friends and family (17 total) this August 2016. The Star Friends keep the party going throughout the day with scheduled activities. Our teenagers had a blast playing beach volleyball, water activities in the pool, mechanical bull riding on the beach, jet skiing, and 2 scuba dives right from the resort. No time wasted traveling elsewhere. We had 4 dinner reservations during our stay. Our favorite in order was the Hibachi Grill, The Steak House, Italian (pretty surprising for a NY Italian), and Mexican. The buffets were very good too! They have high standards in preparing and displaying their dishes. There's something for all tastebuds. The water is filtered, we used ice cubes in our drinks without concern. A few of us had stomach issues but a Pepto tablet each morning was a lifesaver. I found the fresh fruit juices in the morning buffets to be delish but caused some stomach issues. Don't miss the nightly shows. Unexpected and truly enjoyable. After the show stick around for the Star Friend Dancers to come out and mingle with the guests. They teach you how to dance and it's a good time for all ages! It was a memorable vacation for all of us. Our biggest issue is deciding to come back to the Tucan again for a 3rd time or try a different Iberostar. Personally the resort size was perfect for us. We felt safe enough for our kids to walk to the lobby, archery, and teen center without being chaperoned by one of the adults. Wifi is free and the resort grounds have decent coverage. We stayed in bldg 11 / bldg 13 last year. Both close to pool/beach. If you want to experience the monkey's up close and personal request a monkey room which I believe is bldg 14.

Good value

The hotel provides a good value. The beach is fantastic and the pool is great. So are the lobby and the "jungle" area. We only attended one of the shows, and it was pretty good. The specialty restaurants are very good - Japanese and Mediterranean were both excellent. You only get a specific number of reservations in these specialty restaurants, even though some of them always seem to be empty, which is a shame. Food at the breakfast buffet the other regular buffets is adequate, but far from stellar. The quality of the drinks is good, although for some of the spirits none of the "good" brands are offered, such as with whisky. The room was very nice, but the air conditioning was noisy and the shower needed urgent maintenance. As much as we tried, we could never get a working hair dryer. One would think that this would be fairly easy, but it wasn't. Trying to reach the front desk (there is no number for housekeeping) was practically impossible - which shows that the service could greatly improve. Overall, I think one forgets about the service mishaps and sometimes mediocre food when getting to the beach. It is simply spectacular!

Hotel Description

Iberostar Tucan Hotel: It's a Jungle Out There

Imagine opening your front door and, instead of city sights and sounds, there are toucans and monkeys hopping and chattering amongst the trees. Sounds pretty wild right? Well, that's how close the wildlife is at Iberostar Tucan Hotel in Playa del Carmen.

The 28-acres of lush jungle surrounding the resort is literally just outside the front door, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to see monkeys, coatis, flamingos, iguanas, agoutis and peacocks! The ecosystem is part of the appeal of this Mayan Riviera family getaway. Kids get a kick out of exploring the stone walkways winding through the forest, checking out tropical fish in the lagoons and posing with Mayan-inspired statues.

If you're needing a break from exploring, relax under a palapa while the sounds of the jungle mingle with the tumble of the surf on the resort's stunning sandy beach. The enormous, lake-style pool seems like a rainforest river, conveniently equipped with a swim-up bar that provides easy access to a number of refreshing cocktails. The wildlife is drawn by the smell of food, as you undoubtedly will be, at the resort's nine restaurants in raised platforms overlooking the lagoons. From the unagi at El Bonsai to ravioli at La Gondola, you'll have plenty of options. When night falls and jungle sounds fill the air, check out La Plaza Theatre Bar for culture-rich variety shows, or shake and shimmy at La Mascara Disco.

Whether you like to coast or let it rip full-throttle, Iberostar Tucan Hotel lets guests vacation at their own speed thanks to the all-inclusive perks: kids can get crafty with balloon animals and crayons at Lucy's Club, while adults take catamarans and kayaks out on the water. Rack up the balls for a game of billiards or practice your jump shot. When you've given those muscles a workout, stop by the on-site spa for the cucumber-mint body treatment; it works miracles on tired legs.

After a day of sun and fun, there's nothing like flopping down on a comfy bed for a great night's sleep, and the standard guestrooms make it possible. Whether you're traveling with friends, someone special, or the entire family, the room is big enough for everyone to catch their Zzz's.
