The service was great but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The outside of the rooms were ok but there was ants in rooms and for as much as you pay the rooms are so outdated. The stores take US dollars but will give Pesos in change not cool. The cab drivers at the resort tried to get over but we made the best of the trip!!! We will not stay here again.

Good trip with a few unfortunate negatives

Overall, our experience at the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel was pretty good. The grounds are very nice with lots of tropical plants and wildlife. We stayed in the platinum suite area and our room and the service was nice. The platinum bar and private pool area, along with the close proximity to the beach, really make it worth the upgrade. Sadly, our trip was dampened by a few things: 1. With the platinum upgrade comes a roped off area on the beach with nicer cushioned loungers and shaded tiki huts- really great, right?. This area is part of the added cost. The platinum area beach concierge decided that he wasn't getting paid enough at the resort (this he told to anyone who would listen), so early in the morning he would lay towels and things on most of the prime area loungers and hold them for ransom, telling platinum patrons that other people came and reserved those and they couldn't have them. I thought he was just reserving hem for people who had tipped him extra to keep them open for them (not cool but more understandable), but most of them stayed empty all day. He seemed to want people to feel desperate and offer to pay him to find a spot for them (a spot they had already paid for with their platinum upgrade). I thought this was really uncool and it ruined many people's beach day because they couldn't find a place to relax when actually there were lots of places open. When I would tell people that those loungers were actually open (because I was there from the early morning and saw this whole thing go down) he would come over and try to kick them out! Fortunately people stood up to him, but this practice makes me not want to return and deal with fighting these issues when I just want to be relaxing on the beach. 2. After 5 previous trips to this region of Mexico and no food illness problems, my 8 year old son got sick after eating sushi at the Miso restaurant and spent the entire night vomiting. He was fine the next day after getting it out of his system but was still tired and couldn't eat much else. This was our last night there so it definitely ended our trip on a bummer note. When I called to let them know, I got a lot of attitude and defensive language. All they needed to say, was we're so sorry. Is there anything we can do to help him? But no, they just denied that it had anything to do with them and said they could send medical services for an extra charge, which we didn't end up needing. 3. The sofa in the room was so stained we wouldn't go near it. Also, I had to ask for new sheets and a new comforter after we arrived because they were all stained. I'm not sure why they would make the bed with nasty stained bedding, but it was pretty gross. The attention to detail is not great here, but that is typically expected. 4. The main concierge at the platinum lounge was not super helpful or very friendly- kind of their main job requirements. Upsides: 1. The beach was beautiful, other than 1 day when tons of seaweed came in but that's not anyone's fault. It is quite shallow a far way out, which lets kids get out really far and still be able to touch. 2. Our server at the platinum pool, Eric, was wonderful, and the tiki lounger beds at that pool were very comfortable and a great place to hang out and read a book. 3. The location of our room was really great- right next to the beach, close to the pool and restaurants- thank you Thalia. 4. My kids had lots of fun at the pools and building sand castles on the beach. 5. The fire show was awesome and we participated in the dance lessons on stage one night, which was really fun. 6. The drinks at the platinum bar were very good (this is the only acceptable place to order a decent drink though). 7. The animals that run around the grounds were super cute. 8. The room was very quiet at night so we all got good rest, when we weren't up dealing with a vomiting child. 9. The shuttles made moving around the expansive property pretty easy. 10. The bathroom and balcony jacuzzi tubs were a hit with the whole family. 11. The Playa del Carmen shopping district is a short cab ride away and is quite fun and safe. 12. Most of the food was really good- breakfast (omelet bar) and dinner are the best- lunch is just ok. I recommend eating a big brunch and just having a snack in the afternoon instead of eating lunch in the buffet...more beach time. :)

Best Vacation Ever!

First of all, I scoured reviews before and after choosing Grand Riviera Princess, and many of the concerns others had, I experienced as well, but these did not deter me from having a great time on a second honeymoon with my wife! We stayed 6 days, and 5 nights, and had a great time! Before we left for our trip, I was concerned we'd have Travel issues like not having our transfers booked, or having an issue with our reservation and not being booked in Platinum; I couldn't have been more wrong- CheapCaribbean had EVERYTHING booked that we paid for! Key concerns others have mentioned: - Missing pool tiles: yes, they are missing many in the pool by the Snack Sunset Buffet, so we made friends with some people and made a fun dominoes game out of it. In reality, a resort of this size can't drain a pool during peak season and replace these. Be careful, but remember you're there to have fun. - Dining options: you will not find exquisite Italian or French cuisine compared to their countries of origin, but it is a valiant attempt to please their customers, and, if you order a meat, it will still be pretty good. Will your steak match a 5-Star Restaurant in the States? Probably not, but it's still a good meal. I've been to other all inclusives, and it's comparable to others, so pursue the a-la-carte options with an open mind. If you can't find something you like, there's the 24 Hr Sports Bar, Room Service, or a Buffet. - Room Comfort and smell: we stayed in Platinum on the Riviera side of the resort, and did not have issues with the humidity in our room. In the interests of honesty, we had issues with our A/C at the beginning, but our concierge, Carlos, in partnership with hotel maintenance, made sure we were comfortable before the end of the day (not that we spent much time in the room during the day). - Nightlife: Hard as I tried, the latest we stayed up was midnight, and that was mostly hanging out and making friends at the Platinum lounge, so I can't speak to the shows or club. - The Beach: Are there rocks? Yes. Are they bad? No. Rocks are just really really big pieces of sand- they're what gets broken down to make sand, so it makes sense that there'd be some. There's also some coral from local reefs (Cozumel, a great spot for diving, is just across the channel, so its natural you might run into some small pieces of it, as it breaks off from the reefs). Regardless, there's a limit to the rocks, then the rocks become sugar soft sand that goes out for 100 yards in waist high crystal clear water. The same goes for the seaweed- it's a part of life at the beach, and the hotel works hard to ensure you have a great experience. What you MUST do: PLATINUM, PLATINUM, PLATINUM!!! - The Platinum lounges are staffed by incredible people!! Carlos, our concierge, was phenomenal in getting our trip off to a great start by explaining Platinum and booking our a-la-carte options for all 5 nights. He also was phenomenal in solving any issues that came up- not that we had that many. In addition, the evening bar staff could not be any better! Yara, Neflaly, and Ciro provided unmatched service, made great drinks, and were so friendly with my wife and I. They provided a truly memorable experience. - Service: Platinum provides you an additional level of service and concern with meeting any needs you have, and people seem to bend over backwards to make sure everything goes smooth for you. You receive a different color bracelet (silver), and it does get noticed. - Pool/Beach Towels: no worries about losing towels or finding a place at the beach- not to mention the private beach area with bar service. We didn't use the private pool, though I'm sure it's amazing if you want a more reclusive, quieter experience. Excursions! - We did not do anything other than going to Playa, but there is so much to do around the resort, and, from what I gathered talking to fellow vacationers, you must visit Chichen Itza and Tulum, if you can. There are also Jeep Excursions and Cenote exploration tours. The resort alone is entertaining, but you'll still find yourself wanting to do more than what they have. -Playa del Carmen: 5th Avenue was great! The hotel has a shuttle service that costs $8.00USD per person round trip for transportation into Playa from the hotel. The shopkeepers want your business, but stick to the middle of the street, and don't be afraid to say No, Gracias in a stern tone. We were called rude Americans (we were simply limited in how much we could spend in the shops) more than one time- I didn't feel like spending $5.00USD on a pen, and shopkeepers can be pushy to try and get you in their stores. We went in the evening, so dinner options were plentiful- choose wisely: you can overpay or get a great value, depending on where you eat. Exchange rates are posted nearly everywhere, so you have that as a bargaining chip! Overall, this is the best vacation my wife and I have ever been on. We'd love to return when we can with our two pre-teens!

Fun Stay

The resort is beautiful and has many great aspects. However, my group and I did not enjoy the food. We were lucky to read many other reviews and knew we had to make reservations for the restaurants. As soon as we arrived we made reservations three days in advance for restartants what ever they had available. The first night there was nothing available so we went to the chill out which is not included in the price but we get platinum beach access for the rest of our stay once we eat there one time. The second night we went to la vaqueria which was not bad but not enough options on the menu. The third night we ate at mama mia which we loved and had many options. The pizza was delish! the buffet was horrible not enough options, they had more sea food than anything else and it was not very tasteful. Most of the workers had bad attitudes and it seemed like every time we asked a question they didnt want to answer them. Other workers were great like Alejando and his bar team at the princess lobby during the 4 shift. We would always tip and be polite so i know its not because we were rude or didnt tip, in fact we were very generous. The beach was really rocky and was not swimable, we had to pay a cab to playa del carmen aka la quinta avenida to enjoy the beach. There are many pools to swim in and we never had a problem finding chairs. The food carts around the pools were amazingg! The best tacos and burgers you will find around the pool, taste way better than the buffet, but the trucks are only around from 12-4:30. The drinks always taste like diet, or "LIGHT" which was not good at all, also the wine and juices were always watered down so they had no taste. The rooms were always clean in fact the whole resort was spotless we never had to complain about our room not being cleaned or serviced. I dont think this was the best resort to stay in compaired to other resorts ive been to its like a 3 star. I wish they had more food options and better beach. Everytime we went into a restaurant they were always empty so i dont understand how they would be all "BOOKED" every reservation we made was at 9:00 PM we would arrive by 8:30 and most of the tables were empty. So we dont understand why we couldent have gotten early reservations. Plus the shows would start at around 8:30 so we could never make it to a show because we had reservations to eat.
