Not what I was expecting

Let me start of by saying not all the staff in the Grand Oasis Tulum was bad just some of them but let me tell you the good things about the Hotel and then I go with the bad, Like I said the Resort is not bad just some workers made it bad. The hotel is well-kept, and the location is beautiful. We reserved a oceanfront room and we were not disappointed, The view was absolutely gorgeous. The water is crystal clear, and nice and warm! The hotel was not too packed which was nice and relaxing. The absolute best part of this hotel is the location. Negative parts: We stayed an entire week in the hotel and we did not get one hot shower... The water was always cold! ( we tested this a different times of the day )... However the worst part of the hotel has to be the food ! The buffet serves the exact same thing every day, not a great selection , and the quality of the food is terrible, The hotel makes you think that there are many dining options, however they are by reservations only. The problem here is that you have to come every morning at 9 AM in the lobby to make a reservation for the same day, if not you're forced to go to that yucky buffet! What really upset me about this is that most of the day tours start between 7 AM to 9 AM, so if you have a tour scheduled that day you can forget about making a reservation you wont make it. The staff were difficult and unaccommodating every time I went to the bar by the beach they were always out of ice they would tell me if you want me to make you a drink go get ice from the bar next to the lobby maybe they have some I complain several times to the Hotel manager which at that time made them get ice and do the drink but after of couple of hours they had no ice again. So I was forced to drink beer or can sodas because they had those in the fridge. The check out in the lobby is the worst there is they don't thank you for staying at the resort they just say you owe this amount and how are you going to pay. It was the most disappointing vacation I've ever had we have stayed in different resorts in Cancun and in the Riviera Maya and none of them disappointed me this place did so last time we stay at the Grand Oasis Tulum but we will return to the area due to the amazing history and natural beauty of Tulum/Cancun.

Beware

On Monday upon our arrival and check-in, we were told our room was ready. When our porter escorted us to our room via walking trail from the main lobby, it was in the middle of being cleaned. We were told by housekeeping staff it would be another 30 minutes before it would be ready for guest. We decided to kill time for the 30 minute wait by wondering around the property. We discovered it was a maze and finding everything the property had to "offer" was not easy by any feat. THE ROOM: The room itself was the worst we've ever experienced on a vacation. There was previous water damage on the ceiling that was still visible, the bathtub and surround had corrosion, some of the walls had "patch" work that was eroding and falling off the wall, we discovered a dirty diaper under the bed from previous guest, visible stains on the bedding, no hot water in our shower after our first night of arrival, our air conditioning stopped working day two, we had a storm and our room floor began to gather moisture and water that we had to wipe up with towels, there was no lock on the bathroom door, and the room refrigerator had rust on the inside of it. THE SERVICE: We called the front desk about the air conditioning in the morning (and several times throughout the day), no one arrived to fix it until that night and it was not repaired during their 5 minute room visit. When we missed our dinner reservation b/c of a late arrival from an arranged tour, we were turned away by staff at a restaurant on the property, even though we were told by the front desk staff we could dine there. Repeated request to the front desk went unanswered/unfulfilled throughout the entire week. While the front desk/concierge staff were bilingual, other hotel staff (gift shop, room service operator, etc) were not causing a breakdown in communication. The only positive thing we have to say about this "resort" is about one of restaurants on the property called 'Bites'. It had amazing food and a good ambiance. Also, you could order several dishes from room service from a limited menu for what amounted to $10.00 U.S. Outside of that, we were left completely underwhelmed by our stay. I would not recommend this hotel to ANYONE.

Great but has the potential to be much bettter!

Positive: The hotel is well-kept, and the location is beautiful. We reserved a oceanfront room and we were not disappointed, The view was absolutely gorgeous. The room is well-equipped, with almost everything you need. The staff is friendly, The hotel was not too packed which was nice and relaxing. The absolute best part of this hotel is the location, The water is crystal clear, and nice and warm! Definitely take advantage of the free kayak and paddle boards and snorkeling equipment. Snorkeling is a must ! Just at the shore we were able to see a turtle, a stingray a couple times (don't worry not dangerous) and countless colorful fish that swim right next to you! Negative: The hotel key card gets disactivated when it is near a cell phone! This means that every time we would arrive at our door, we could not get in and had to walk across the hotel to get it reactivated and then walk all the way back. This was extremely inconvenient, they need to change their key card system ! We stayed an entire week in the hotel and we did not get one hot shower... The water was always cold! ( we tested this a different times of the day )... However the worst part of the hotel has to be the food ! The buffet serves the exact same thing every day, not a great selection , and the quality of the food is terrible ! ( it's basically high school cafeteria food...maybe even worst...) The hotel makes you think that there are many dining options, however they are by reservations only. The problem here is that you have to come every morning at 9 AM in the lobby to make a reservation for the same day, if not you're forced to go to that yucky buffet! What really upset me about this is that most of the day tours start between 7 AM to 9 AM, so if you have a tour scheduled that day you can forget about making a reservation for the night! We went one night to one of the restaurants that needed a reservation, we were very poorly received, and the food was exactly the same as in the buffet but it was presented nicely. Finally some minor detail that could be improved ... The staff should be better informed about the hotel and its policies. When we arrived the room was not very clean there was sunscreen smeared over the TV stand. There were never any beachtowels ... Even though all these things are a pain... our beautiful view definitely helped us forget !

Great but has the potential to be much bettter! Great but has the potential to be much bettter!

We had a good time, but needs improvement

This is not a bad resort at all....good value for your money, good food, good amenities, great beach, really nice people who work there. My biggest complaints are relating to the dinner reservations. If you want to eat dinner in the better restaurants (instead of the buffet), you'd might as well kiss your morning goodbye. The resort will not take reservations for more than one day, and you have to make the reservation between 9am and 11am on the day you want to use it. I'm used to other resorts allowing me to make my dinner reservations for the duration of my stay, and at any time I want to do so. The staff blames this, and the fact that they will not take reservations outside of the 9-11am window on "the system" they use. So forget your morning workout, sleeping in, or even getting to the breakfast buffet before the crowd unless you're a really early riser. Here's the trick to spending less time in line and getting a good reservation. Arrive to the concierge desk at 8am. Bring your coffee and a book. Pull a chair over to the location where the line starts and read your book. You will likely be first in line, and will be done at 9:02am and will have your pick of times and restaurants. If you arrive at 8:20, you'll be there until 9:50 and will have to take what they have. Arrive at 9am, and you'll be 100th in line and might as well forget it. We also had a problem with our AC, and requested for someone to take a look at it. They were supposed to have done so, but I am not sure they ever came. The AC was not any better. I'd suggest asking to go to the room to make sure the AC is working before you accept the room. Lastly, there is really only one pool to go to if you have kids and aren't a "condo owner" or in the Sian Kaan club. It's in the middle of the complex and is mostly geared toward little kids. We have teens, so avoided it and hung out on the beach. There are more pools with limited access than there are for the rest of us. Overall, we weren't upset we booked the Grand Oasis Tulum. It all worked out. Great staff and good food. Just a few things they could fix, like the reservation policy.
