Not great

Our room had a terrible smell whenever the air conditioning turned on. There were not enough bars, need more servers. The food was good. The grounds were beautiful and I did like the beach.

Family of 5 with 3 teen boys from AL would go back

We spent 6 days and returned on Mar 15, 2017. We consider ourselves semi-experienced given this was our 10th-yr visiting Mexico at various resorts. This was our first time at this resort. Pros: We enjoyed the nightly entertainment, pool activities, and the new friends that we met from Canada. Lounge chairs were plentiful. My wife and I are pool-lovers while the boys are beach-lovers. Everyone seemed pleased with the accommodations. The boys used the resort shuttles to get around. If you prefer the beach over the pools, I would strongly suggest Tulum Lobby over the Coba Lobby. Bottomline, you cannot go wrong with either location. ...and you have full access to both facilities. Akumal is considered the most luxurious of the lobbies. Frankly it was not worth the extra money given Coba & Tulum are in pristine condition. Go to the Premier-Coba Lobby and try the tequila samples. I also recommend eating breakfast/lunch at the Premier-Coba lobby. Premier lobby is much smaller however, we found the quality of the buffet to be better. Neutral: This resort is huge. They have an efficient shuttle service to take you to the various lobbies, pools and other activities. I rate this neutral because the shuttle service was very confusing. By the fourth day we realized certain lanes at each lobby was for certain routes (sometimes). The drivers were always helpful. I recommend they put signs up to give guest some idea about the shuttle service. Con: The resort is a solid hour one-way trip from the airport. We took a private shuttle and enjoyed the scenery along the way. The beds are very hard but the rooms were clean. I took my favorite pillow with me and that helped. We had an ant problem on the 3rd day but that was quickly resolved when I sprayed our Lysol on them. There are not enough electrical outlets in the room. I took an electrical power strip and an extension cord. It was heavily used the entire 6 days. My toilet leaked the entire time I was there. It did not bother us as I simply shut the bathroom door at bedtime. I was very disappointed to learn that I had to rent a lock for the room's safety box. It will cost $5 per day. We decided not to be penny wise and pound foolish and risk theft of our valuables. That said, the resort needs to upgrade their security boxes given the money they are making. Then again, they are making money off of those boxes so, I see no incentive for them to change it. Food: I have mixed feelings about the food. The buffets were above average however, it is often very difficult to please every possible pallet. With that in mind, I found things I enjoyed - like the sushi and fruit. We dined at 2 ala carte restaurants and did not leave unfulfilled. The ala carte restaurants are difficult to book so, I highly suggest you book upon arrival. We did Japanese and Le Gourmet. It was a little disappointing to see empty tables knowing full well there were guest that could not get a seating. Since I don't have a full appreciate for their calculus to determine the "haves" and "have nots", I will leave that to your discretion. Activities off the resort: We did not participate in any excursions. We avoided talking to lobby personnel and we did not see our return transportation representative until 2 days before our flight. They will ask you to come by their desk to confirm your return reservations within 24 hours. Face it, they already have your return information. If you don't want the sales pitch, wait a few days before visiting your travel coordinator. We used AMSTAR and they were very kind and gracious. Go to Playa de Carmen on 5th Ave: The taxi will cost you approximately $20 per person one way. DON'T DO IT! ...unless you have money falling all over the place. Catch the shuttle from your lobby to the Hacienda. Hacienda is located on the resort at the very from and near the main highway. Ask the guard where to catch the Shuttle Bus, if you don't know. The Shuttle Bus (it is really a 12 passenger van) makes stops every 20 minutes or so. The last stop for all Shuttle Buses is 2 blocks from 5th Ave. It will cost you $3 per person one-way. We were a little apprehensive at first but we had a fabulous time downtown. The Shuttle Buses are available well past mid-night however, I suggest you ask the driver to make sure. Tipping: We tipped a lot. We left $5 per day for the maid service; tip the pool bar tender several times; tip the drivers occasionally and our waiters. I did have a bad experience with any of the employees. Unfortunately that is not always the case as I read other reviews. Drinks: They were ok. ...mostly watered down drinks however, the amount of wasted drinks that I saw, I cannot blame the resort. Not to mention, drunks can be unruly and disruptive. If you drink enough shots, you will feel it. Overall: We had an awesome time. We plan to return.

Very clean and very friendly staff. The negatives are everything closes too early... the pool, bars, entertainment. No fans in the bathroom so after a shower it is hot and steamy. Food at the buffet and snack bar was cold almost every meal.
