When it comes to Caribbean vacations, everyone seems to want the same things: beautiful blue water, a white sandy beach, and a great island vibe. But some would rather do without a bunch of kids running around. That's where Gran Bahia Principe Ambar in Punta Cana excels. This adults-only hotel offers tantalizing, all inclusive deals on tropical getaways for the 18 and older crowd.

Our Caribbean Vacation
This was our first Caribbean vacation and we loved it. We definitely picked the right location. Everything was great. The service was awesome, everybody was friendly and helpful. The food and drinks were great also, I'm glad I went all inclusive because I think I probably tried every drink on the menu. Lol. We went on 3 excursion which I paid for in advance. Everything was on point and we had absolutely no problems. We had a lovely time with all the strangers we met and we'll definitely be back! The help provided by Cheap Caribbean was the best, the information we received was very helpful. Good job CheapCaribbean.com!!
We just got back from PC on March 2, 2012. Our overall trip was great. We arrived at the airport and had a private transfer with Olympic Tours - they were great.
Hotel: The hotel was great overall as well. We went for my husband's 40th birthday. They had balloons, a bottle of rum and a fruit plate waiting for us. We were on the third floo of building 69, but no view of the ocean. Great building location, but I think I would stay on the first floor in the future. With that, our friends were in a first floor room, but it was a bit musty. They changed rooms day 2 to another first floor room and it was great!
Food: We made one reservation before we left and the other when we arrived. I recommend making them in advance. By far, the Don Pablo restaurant was the best. Not a fan of Olivio. Makio (sp?) the Japanese place was good and the steakhouse at the Esmeralds was good. The BBQ was just ok. I wish we could have gone to the Italian place, but no reservations were available. Thursday night is the seafood buffet at the Ambar - my husband was in heaven...especially after 4 lobster tails! Overall, I was ready to get home to have different food! Toward the end of the week, i felt I was eating the same things...but they were all great!
Entertainment: We went to the casino one night - it was fun. Spent time outside at the karoke bar, which was fun too. The flean market comes into the hotel on Monday's and Friday's...definitely barter. Go into the shops to get prices, them barter down with flea market guys. WE did not watch entertainment on stage any days.
Pool: The Ambar pool is great. LOVE the swim up bar. I suggest bringing cups with you - we brough the insulated ones with the screw on top and straw - saves you from going back to the bar 100 times during the day. They have some top shelf at the pool. If you are looking for something specific, ask the bar tender if he will be there all week, then slip him a $20 and he will have it pool side. Only negative thing...people put towels out by 8am...so if you want a chair, I suggest doing so as well.
Bar: Hotel lobby bar in Ambar has all top shelf. If you go to the other loby's you will have to pay for top shelf - so get your drink before you leave if exploring!!!
Excursions: We went with Olympic Tours, since they transferred us from the airport. I felt we were lied to by the rep. We go on several vacations a year with several excursions. By far this was the worst experience. I recommend booking before you go (Mike's Adventures) or look to book with Apple or another tour group.
Overall, great trip and we would definitely go back!

Not a good value
Compared to another all inclusive vacation I took, the Gran Bahia Principe Ambar did not come close. NO beer choices, the ONLY choice you have is Presidente. It wasn't too bad, but I thought this was going to be an exclusive resort. The rooms were okay...my first room had a very musty/mlldew smell, and the people that I was traveling with agreed, so I know it wasn't just me being picky. My first room also did not have a working toilet, but they fixed that immediately; although I must say that I would expect the maintenance crew to TAKE the towel they used to soak up all the water while they were making repairs. This towel was SOAKED and they just left it on the floor. No top shelf liquors unless you call Absolut and Stolinchaya top shelf. Finally, the pool did not have enough chairs, though that seems inherent amongst many resorts. Why can't these places just buy more chairs????
The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean, although a couple we met there found bed bugs in their bed and she had bites on her leg as well.
Again, comparing to my other all-inclusive vacation, the food was sub-par. In fact, we could only eat at the theme restaurants 4 of the 7 nights we were staying, the other 3 were buffet. I couldn't believe that when I heard it...it is my belief we should have been able to eat at a restaurant each day for the money we paid. The food also lacked variety; same stuff, every day.
I think for a little bit more, we could have stayed at a nicer place, and I will research much better before my next booking.

Relaxing Vacation
Weather was nice except for 2 mornings were it rained for about 15 - 30 minutes. Hotel was very good, however, the personnel at the front desk and customer service should learn to be a little more polite and helpful. Front desk did not tell me that a reservation was required at least one day before I would like to dine at the al-a-carte restaurant. When I went to guest services, they told me that the restaurant I requested was not on their list to make reservations. They did not offer a number or name of a person who I could contact in order to make reservations. Being that I went to guest services at 4 in the afternoon and requested reservations for 8 that evening, the lady made no attempt to accomodate me and I left without further ado. All of the buffet restaurants had the same nightly theme as their conterparts so you did not have a variety unless you went to the al-acarte restaurants. Italian restaurant and the Garden Grill served excellent food, albeit the the deserts in all the restaurants had much to be desired. I called Express Services two times for bottled water, but it was never delivered to the room. The second time, I was told that only the maid restocked the refrigerator on a daily basis. Additionally, the bars did not have bottled water. I had to wait until the next morning when the maid arrived to get any water.
With the exception of the dinner reservations and the room service, all other service was excellent and the property appeared to be well maintained.

do they have wait staff by the pool4 answers

bill
Hi Bill,
This resort does have wait service by the pool.
ccsusan1
I forgot to add that to my review. I think they do have wait staff, but I NEVER saw them. I had to retrieve every drink for myself. I was not happy about this as I have had wait staff at another resort in Cancun, and it was nice if you needed it. I was prepared to tip, but was never approached.
I would plan on getting your own drinks.
dp5422
Yes, you can go up the the bar yourself or there are servers that come around to get drink orders.
misswinegirl
Not sure but they do on the beach so I would guess yes.

Hi Leon,
Topless sunbathing is not permitted by the pool, however there is a designated area on the beach where topless sunbathing is allowed.
ccsusan1
yes, I saw topless sunbathing at the pool and the beach
dp5422
I did see some by the pool, but it is posted no topless. You can sunbathe topless on the beach and in the Ambar section of the beach as well.
misswinegirl
Only on the beach, not at the pool.

where in the complex the Ambar Don pablo is located?2 answers
We have been there a few times in the past, the area is large, where is this area locted in refference to the beach, the Pueblo area, etc

The Gran Bahia Principe complex is very large. The Ambar Don Pablo is located in the area closest to the beach and is able to use the amenities of the other resorts within the complex.
ccsusan1
On the back side of the buffet. Facing the buffet go right out toward the rooms turn left and go about 100 feet go left and there you are.
