4 Star Rating is Legit!

FIRST OBSERVATIONS: Caribbean resorts that we have stayed at (many) have big beautiful resorts all lined up one after the other. Juan Dolio is an older Our first impression of Juan Doilo and Emotions was negative. Most unimpressive area and somewhat desolate. When we checked in the resort seemed pretty small and meh. That impression was soon to change! STAYING AT EMOTIONS: Once we settled in and got adjusted to the resort we fell in love with it! WHY? - the workers are great, they want to please you and they're not looking for tips like most places (we did tip). - the food and drinks are very good and the specialty restaurants are fantastic! (especially Italian) - the resort grounds are beautiful and well maintained. - We got an upgrade to Building #4 (Adult Only). It was great! Updated rooms, comfortable beds, huge 2 person shower (note: the shower floor is fine, the issue is there is only 1 small drain for 2 shower heads. So the drain may at times have trouble draining quickly). Also, building #4 is close to all the action but is still quiet to sleep in. - the beach is great and safe to walk in both directions. BIGGEST PLUS: The resort has an awesome "common area" at the main pools where there are a bunch of cafe table and chairs in front of shops(coffee shop, wine and cheese shop, brewery/sports bar, gift shop). This is where everyone comes together and hangs out and the ambiance is excellent.

questionable

The first room we were assigned wasn't fit for occupancy. We were given a hard time at the front desk and finally after letting them know we were repeat customers who enjoyed our last stay were given a much better room. The staff isn't on the same page when asked questions. Several times we were given wrong information about dining reservations and what times seating was and also what times the restaurants opened. Food was good overall and some nice dishes in the Italian and Dominican restaurants Much different than last year! We won't return there......

My 10 days

I stayed hear from Feb.7th-17th 2017. What a great time I had ! I guess I should give you my pros and cons. Pros, From the second I stepped onto the beautiful property to when I left, every employee was just fantastic and they treated me so well. My adult superior room was beautiful and kept clean ( although sometimes housekeeping didnt come till early evening. I didnt mind that) The resort is newer and kept clean as are the pools and beach. I cant say enough about the kindness of the employees ! The shows at nite are entertaining especially the Michael Jackson show ! The beach party was also alot of fun. Breakfast was the best buffet meal as lunch and dinner were just ok. The only restaurant I tried was the Dominican Fusion and that was pretty good. There are some really great places to eat close to the resort that I took advantage of. A short cab ride away ! I would have to say that the only con I can think of was... After a couple days I left a tip for the housekeeper under a empty Dasanti water bottle. She kept them coming till around day 8. Then I noticed there was another brand water in the fridge with the seal broken on every bottle. Like a fool, I drank them and got sooo sick for the next bunch of days. Stay away from unsealed water bottles ! All in all I would recommend this place and would gladly go back there

Nice relaxing resort

i was looking for a more intimate resort for some much needed R&R and Emotions fit the bill. I didn't want a mega resort with tons of people waiting to make reservations, lines at Buffet or having to take a tram to the beach. If you're looking for 5 star resort with people tripping over themselves to serve you, this isn't the place but neither are you paying the premium bucks. The resort is recently remodeled and new. The rooms were large and bright. We were in building 5 at the back which was great in that it was nice and quite. I don't think i would have liked to be in the adult (building 4) or other buildings near the pool and stage since it would have been much louder. Our room was on the 3rd floor which meant we had very high cathedral ceilings which was nice. There was a remote controlled air conditioning unit that worked well. They could use more storage (3 small drawers and missing hangers). The shower door did leak (floor is not graded correctly) but the door swings both ways so rolling up a towel and then placing the bath mat on the other side of it worked well. The maids must know this and this is how they set it up after the first day and they left plenty of towels. There is a good size fridge with 3 bottles of water, and a can of regular and light coke and sprite. We left a tip with a request for cerveza and two cans were left for us. The food was good and variable. They need more servers and better training of the servers at the buffet. We eat mostly at the buffet at the beach. The other buffet may have had more choices (they looked like they had sushi one night and a made to order caesar salad the one night we eat there.) but we just liked being able to eat outside and watch the surf. We didn't make breakfast but 1-2 times since we liked to sleep in (They should consider possibly staggering the hours of the two buffets so if one closes the other is still open) but the coffee shop was great. We would get our double espresso or cappuccino on our way to the beach and a bloody mary once we got there. They also have pastries, cookies and bottled water at the coffee shop all included and the frozen mochas were great in the afternoon. We eat at all three specialty restaurants. The service was the best at the Dominican but we enjoyed them all. The worse service was at the Italian but we had the late seating and there was a large rowdy group that might have stayed from the first sitting. They were also short staffed with only 1 regular server and they had pulled people in from elsewhere to help who were obviously trying. you need to make the reservations the day before and can only make 1 night at a time. The first two times I arrived around 9 and 9:30 and there was minimal wait. The last time i think there was a large air transit group that arrived the day before and there was a long line at 9 but i was still able to get a reservation. We did go to Oaks one night before dinner. We love wine (and the house wine is rough) They have a nice wine list that was reasonably priced (good spanish and south american reds) when you purchase a bottle they make up a platter of cheese and freshly sliced smoked ham carved right there off the bone. They charge $15 if you don't buy wine but it's complimentary if you do. (Makes that $29 Rioja that much more affordable) We really enjoyed it. You can also buy wine and they will deliver it to the restaurants for you. We felt the bartenders were good and they never failed to make whatever we asked for. I do wish they had a menu to know some of the options. There is no waiter service on the beach but that might be a good thing. The road is a nonissue. It's more like a lane with very few cars passing by. The beach was great and we could always find lounges by the water where there was always a nice breeze. There are vendors but they only allow 4 on the beach for a 20 min period. They have to have a licence/pass that security checks. They were all nice and would leave you alone once you politely shack your head or say your not interested. A couple of dogs and cats but they're all rather shy and wont come to you unless you call them. They're actually trained to do there buisness outside of the resort property. We did walk into Juan Dolio a few times. There's a market that has anything you might have forgotten from sunscreen, cigars, souvenirs, liquor and wine, munchies.... There's a bank and an ATM that will let you take out 5000 pesos (the ATM at the hotel only lets you take out 2000 pesos -about $40) (If you need to get money off a visa, remember to bring your passport) several bars and some pretty highly rated restaurants. We also took the local bus into Santo Domingo and to Three Eyes National Park which was fun (catch it across the street at the back of the resort. cost 200 pesos each way) All in all we really enjoyed Emotions. Cant beat it for the $.
