Nice relaxing resort

i was looking for a more intimate resort for some much needed R&R and Emotions fit the bill. I didn't want a mega resort with tons of people waiting to make reservations, lines at Buffet or having to take a tram to the beach. If you're looking for 5 star resort with people tripping over themselves to serve you, this isn't the place but neither are you paying the premium bucks. The resort is recently remodeled and new. The rooms were large and bright. We were in building 5 at the back which was great in that it was nice and quite. I don't think i would have liked to be in the adult (building 4) or other buildings near the pool and stage since it would have been much louder. Our room was on the 3rd floor which meant we had very high cathedral ceilings which was nice. There was a remote controlled air conditioning unit that worked well. They could use more storage (3 small drawers and missing hangers). The shower door did leak (floor is not graded correctly) but the door swings both ways so rolling up a towel and then placing the bath mat on the other side of it worked well. The maids must know this and this is how they set it up after the first day and they left plenty of towels. There is a good size fridge with 3 bottles of water, and a can of regular and light coke and sprite. We left a tip with a request for cerveza and two cans were left for us. The food was good and variable. They need more servers and better training of the servers at the buffet. We eat mostly at the buffet at the beach. The other buffet may have had more choices (they looked like they had sushi one night and a made to order caesar salad the one night we eat there.) but we just liked being able to eat outside and watch the surf. We didn't make breakfast but 1-2 times since we liked to sleep in (They should consider possibly staggering the hours of the two buffets so if one closes the other is still open) but the coffee shop was great. We would get our double espresso or cappuccino on our way to the beach and a bloody mary once we got there. They also have pastries, cookies and bottled water at the coffee shop all included and the frozen mochas were great in the afternoon. We eat at all three specialty restaurants. The service was the best at the Dominican but we enjoyed them all. The worse service was at the Italian but we had the late seating and there was a large rowdy group that might have stayed from the first sitting. They were also short staffed with only 1 regular server and they had pulled people in from elsewhere to help who were obviously trying. you need to make the reservations the day before and can only make 1 night at a time. The first two times I arrived around 9 and 9:30 and there was minimal wait. The last time i think there was a large air transit group that arrived the day before and there was a long line at 9 but i was still able to get a reservation. We did go to Oaks one night before dinner. We love wine (and the house wine is rough) They have a nice wine list that was reasonably priced (good spanish and south american reds) when you purchase a bottle they make up a platter of cheese and freshly sliced smoked ham carved right there off the bone. They charge $15 if you don't buy wine but it's complimentary if you do. (Makes that $29 Rioja that much more affordable) We really enjoyed it. You can also buy wine and they will deliver it to the restaurants for you. We felt the bartenders were good and they never failed to make whatever we asked for. I do wish they had a menu to know some of the options. There is no waiter service on the beach but that might be a good thing. The road is a nonissue. It's more like a lane with very few cars passing by. The beach was great and we could always find lounges by the water where there was always a nice breeze. There are vendors but they only allow 4 on the beach for a 20 min period. They have to have a licence/pass that security checks. They were all nice and would leave you alone once you politely shack your head or say your not interested. A couple of dogs and cats but they're all rather shy and wont come to you unless you call them. They're actually trained to do there buisness outside of the resort property. We did walk into Juan Dolio a few times. There's a market that has anything you might have forgotten from sunscreen, cigars, souvenirs, liquor and wine, munchies.... There's a bank and an ATM that will let you take out 5000 pesos (the ATM at the hotel only lets you take out 2000 pesos -about $40) (If you need to get money off a visa, remember to bring your passport) several bars and some pretty highly rated restaurants. We also took the local bus into Santo Domingo and to Three Eyes National Park which was fun (catch it across the street at the back of the resort. cost 200 pesos each way) All in all we really enjoyed Emotions. Cant beat it for the $.

It was ok.

For the price we paid, we really can't complain. Pros include beautiful beach and good restaurants. I really loved the Italian restaurant! Cons include the beds (mattress was way too firm for my taste), limited seating by the pool, and limited variety at the buffets, which are your only option if you don't get a reservation at one of the restaurants. Service was ok; it seemed like a 50-50 shot to find someone who could speak English well enough to help with any issues/questions we had. For example, I had a difficult time finding someone to help me figure out what time the shuttle would be picking us up for our return flight. But once I found the right person, it was a piece of cake. I can't fault anyone for that since we were the foreigners, and it seems as though most visitors are from Canada and speak French. Overall, if you're on a budget and need a simple relaxing vacation, this would be a good place to check out. Based on what I saw, it does seem like it would be worth upgrading, which we did not do.

Good Value, Will stay there again

Good value. Clean, newly renovated look resort. Service excellent. Friendly staff. Small compared to most resorts. We enjoyed that it was smaller. It had all we needed without getting lost. Stayed in adults only section (Superior) with separate pool/Jacuzzi. Rooms nice. Has a disco. Beach small/cozy. Sand was whitish. Water was calm, almost like a natural swimming pool due to reefs offshore. Easy to get a beach chair. Two buffets, same food, good food, fresh. Three restaurants in addition to the buffets. One of the three would have to pay extra: lobster and steak on the beach. Most guests were European. A mix of ages. The beach bar served good, fresh food at later hours. Pablo at the beach bar was super funny and exceedingly friendly. Wilson in the buffets was an attentive waiter. Santo, security at the beach, was professional and helpful. Ezequiel, the bellman, was friendly and helpful. Only negative was a common one at resorts: it's awkward to make a reservation at a restaurant. We checked in about 2:30PM for a two-night stay. The desk clerk told us we could make a restaurant reservation at the services desk between 9:00AM to noon the next morning. The next morning when we attempted to reserve the lady told us it would be for the next night but we were checking out the next day. Resorts should provide a way to make a restaurant reservation/hold a reservation with a credit card in advance. Pay a cancel fee if necessary. I would stay at Emotions again.

You get what you pay for....

Overall this place is ok....we had a good time because we were there with friends, but I would not come back. Pool was nice but only one pool to choose from unless you upgrade, which was the only real benefit to upgrading. I missed having a swim up bar for sure. If you come here bring a cooler cup because the cups are so tiny. There is no real mixed drinks, just the frozen stuff that they poor booze into. Barcelo was the best rum they had. Rooms were acceptable for the price, bed is comfy, hot water take a long time so start it 10 minutes before you want to get in. Towels are a real issue, you have to play around with a towel card and exchange a towel to get a new one for the beach. Most of the time they didn't have new towels to give you. The beach was very pretty and definitely the water is nice to swim in, however they only maintain the grounds they own, so past the resort grounds it's a mess, trash everywhere, they could keep it up 100 yards further and it would be nicer. Food was average, nothing stood out as great. Of six people we went with, all but me got sick before we left. I wasn't expecting much based on what we paid but the fact that 5 of 6 people were sick was disappointing. We went to saona island which was the most beautiful beach I have seen, go there! I'd suggest researching to stay somewhere closer to this area, the resorts we stopped at on our way here seemed much nicer. Overall the mananagement here is a hot mess and they need some organization, it felt chaotic and not as relaxing as we would have liked.
